Pedagogical feedback in the motor skill domain for computer-based sport training

Iskandar, Yulita Hanum P. January 2010 (has links)
With the rapid development of Computer-based Sport Training (CBST), feedback plays an important role in both coaching and learning. A good CBST system includes not only good training strategies but also effective feedback design. Feedback in the motor skill domain via CBST may be synthetically designed to allow athletes to practice in a more effective way, and enhance their skill acquisition. Little research has been undertaken on the integration of pedagogic theory and instructional design with the design of feedback in CBST. To bridge this gap, this thesis‟s purpose was to explore the design of pedagogically-informed feedback in the motor skill domain via CBST, in order to support athletes‟ achievement of their intended training outcomes. This thesis presents a framework of pedagogical feedback in the motor skill domain. It draws a picture of how principles from learning transactions, competency, cybernetics, and behaviourism, can work together to build sound pedagogical feedback for the implementation of a CBST system. The key principle of the framework is to generate feedback based on the athletes‟ achievement of their intended training outcome. The training outcome is conceptualised as comprising two components: a statement of capability, and a statement of the subject matter to which the capability applies. The pedagogical feedback system measures athletes‟ performance and compares it against the intended training outcomes. The system then identifies any performance gap and generates feedback to reinforce better performance. Four counterbalanced experiments asked student rowers to explore the differences between the pedagogical feedback system and their current feedback system (Sean-Analysis). Pedagogical feedback was at least as good as Sean-Analysis with respect to the level of satisfaction of the athlete. In addition, pedagogical feedback seemed able to generate feedback that was consistent with the athlete‟s intended training outcome, support the athlete‟s positioning within their level of achieved performance, and support the athlete‟s self-assessment. Overall, it can be concluded that the pedagogical feedback based on the proposed framework appears to be a good model for generating feedback in CBST.

Walking and well-being : landscape, affect, rhythm

Doughty, Karolina Sofia Erika Ronander January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnographic exploration of group walking practices in the Hampshire countryside, investigating the embodied, affective and social practice of the shared walk and its relation to the individual pursuit of wellness. Responding to the growing literature in qualitative health geography using ‘therapeutic landscape’ as a conceptual framework, group walking practices are approached in this thesis from a perspective of more-than-representational theories of social practice that aims to address group dynamics and the role of social relations for the establishment of therapeutic spaces. While also drawing attention to the embodied and affective nature of experience, this thesis opens a discussion between health geography and cultural geographies on the issues of the body, mobility and collective experience. Further, the thesis aims to place the study findings within the wider cultural phenomena of ‘walking for health’ through an exploration of practices of assemblage. Deleuzian assemblage theory, both as a pragmatic analytical tool and an ontological position, offers a new approach to thinking health and place relationally, arguing for a distribution of agencies and providing a framework for tracing their emergent effects across complex networks. The thesis finds its empirical focus in ethnographic fieldwork with five walking groups as well as individual mobile interviews. The findings discussed in the thesis firstly pertain to the significance of social relations for well-being, exploring the kinds of socialities that are produced while walking together, and arguing that the shared walk has the potential to establish a place-specific social aesthetic that can be experienced as restorative. Secondly, the rural walkscape as a therapeutic landscape is analysed as a specific outcome of place-based rhythms, implicated in the performativity and mobility of the body in the creation of a restorative place/practice. It is found that the shared walk is characterised by specific rhythmic qualities and that walking as a health practice is subject to a range of norms, regulations and performative styles. The findings and conceptual development in this thesis contribute to an interrogation of the complex processes through which therapeutic landscapes are established, practiced and experienced. The thesis also contributes to more-than representational geographies of embodiment, affect and landscape, which are intimately tied up in the production and performance of both wellness and place.

Women's sporting lives : a biographical study of elite amateur tennis players at Wimbledon

van Someren, Janine January 2010 (has links)
The history of amateur tennis pre and post the Second World War is dominated by the sporting biographies of male players with women’s stories largely ignored. This research addressed the issue of women tennis players’ marginalisation through a biographical analysis of the women’s amateur circuit with particular emphasis on the previously untold story of four British tennis players: Mrs. Phyllis King (née Mudford, who competed at the Wimbledon Championships 1928-1953), Mrs. Joan Hughesman (née Curry, Wimbledon 1939-1960), Mrs. Joy Michelle (née Hibbert, Wimbledon 1947- 1957), Mrs. Christine Janes (née Truman, Wimbledon 1957-1974). The lives of the women were investigated utilising biographical methods of life story interviews and analysis of life documents including published biographies and archival and media sources. Gender and social class emerged as key themes which were explored through the microcosm of women’s tennis shedding new light on a wide range of issues from the influence of family, gender role expectations and life on the amateur tennis circuit. The findings reveal the significance of fashion in British tennis whereby it is argued that choice of clothing was a form of gender compliance. Further to this the contributions of fashion designer Teddy Tinling is recognised as a key factor in changing the shape of women’s tennis post the Second World War. The research reveals the key role sport played in shaping the women’s identity from the onset of their playing careers through to their retirement from sport

Reckziegel, Ana Cecilia de Carvalho January 2004 (has links)
This work aims to understand the meaning attributed, by young residents of the periphery of Porto Alegre, to the practice of street dance as a component element of the Hip-Hop. Aiming to understand the practice of dance in a specific cultural universe, and giving preference to its micro-social aspects, the study has as methodological approach the ethnographical investigation, and as main instruments of data gathering, the participative observation and the semi-structured interview. The final consideration is made from two main perspectives: street dance as learning and street dance as leisure. The practice of dance, along with the ideological principles of the Hip-Hop culture, symbolized by the attitude, makes possible to the youth the construction of a project that has as objective the building of a worthy life for oneself, and the redeeming of those who live marginally.

This research aims at investigating leisure experiences of young high school students who live in Farrapos neighborhood in Porto Alegre. The study has focused on the conceptions of leisure of youth, assuming that the leisure experience does not occur founded only on objective bases (time and activity), therefore, subjective aspects (attitude, tastes and preferences) must be taken into consideration. Listening to what young people understand as leisure and how they believe they experience it has become the main undertaking in this research. Interviews have been used as the main tool to collect data. Twelve 16-20 year-olds have participated in this study. Six girls and six boys with different routines have been gathered: those who work, those who have extra-class activities, and those who only attend school. The analysis has been developed from the phenomenological approach, which involves a comprehensive analysis of leisure by highlighting the meanings of this phenomenon to youth. The theoretical discussion has been carried out from an interlocution with authors who have investigated both leisure and youth.Leisure of young people from Farrapos neighborhood reflects both the economical situation of their families and the material conditions of the place where they live. What they have pointed out as leisure occurs mainly in their neighborhood, near their homes, it does not imply expenditures, and consists of the activities they perform daily. The way those girls and boys experience leisure has shown subtle differences that indicated gender peculiarities. What they have pointed out as leisure often involved the same kind of activity and even occurred in the same place. Companions and the use of certain spaces on particular days or hours distinguish leisure between girls and boys. As to their conceptions of leisure, young people have referred to it as a moment, a time or period, thus indicating a temporal factor. They have also defined it as something that one does, i.e. an activity. Leisure has been related to choices, absence of duties and amusement.

Zabaleta, Ariane Silveira Dias January 2012 (has links)
In this study I set out to understand what old age means and how it is experienced within the Centro de Esporte, Lazer e Recreação do Idoso (CELARI), located in the Physical de Education School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre. During the period between April and December of 2011 I developed an ethnographic incursion (participative observation, interviews and document analysis) in which I shared several moments of socializing such as physical activity workshops, social activities, meetings, tours and other everyday situations. After this long period of data production I proceeded to the examination of the obtained material, developed analytical categories and came to some interpretations. Those interpretations were presented in different topics/aspects/themes and helped me to provide answers to this study's questions. Such questions relate to the sense of belonging, the perspectives concerning body and health in that given context and the sociability logics supporting the social dynamics of that universe. On the sense of belonging I understood that experiencing old age at CELARI means to share a predominantly feminine environment where everyday relations are permeated by the sense of belonging. I noticed that the conception of elderly health goes beyond the biologic condition and relates to happiness, fun and feeling good in that context. I could realize that aspects like the preoccupation with the body and being in shape pervade the ageing process. Although this preoccupation focus predominantly on the body's utility dimension (health; autonomy) it also relates to the search of a beautiful body, which is also part of the participants objectives. CELARI is then a space that allows various forms of sociability and interaction among its participants, where the affective exchanges pervade the daily relationships and sometimes sustain participation in the project.

Through this ethnography I proposed to investigate what is the shopping mall for low-income black teenagers in Salvador and how they establish relations in a place devoted to consumption. To data collection ends I did field observations, formal interviews with mall-goers, focus groups with students from public schools, document analysis of materials available on the Internet and newspaper reports. Among the young interviewed, the mall is considered one of the favorite leisure places, competing only with the beach. Racial and socioeconomic dimensions directly affected the sociality of these young people in the mall, for it generates constraints to hang around the many internal areas of such location. At the same time, I observed that it is curiously the mall, place where consumption and physical appearance are appreciated, that young black of poor neighborhoods spend their leisure time and feel welcomed. It is in this “small town” that these young people identify themselves and like to “enjoy life”. / Salvador
