Every organization has a corporate image (beyond its control) which is mainly formed by its
corporate identity (which it can control). This means that organizations have to manage their
images. A positive image is particularly important for non-profit organizations, since these
organizations depend on the goodwill of their publics for their existence.
NG Welsyn is a well known welfare organization, famous for its bond with the Dutch
Reformed church. Its two main sources of income, namely the state and members of the
church have different opinions about the spending of funds. The state expects NG Welsyn to
play a role in transformation, while members of the church want their needs to be catered for
first. This, along with the decrease in funds from church members forced NG Welsyn to
research its image among Dutch Reformed church members.
In order to determine the image of NG Welsyn, an external public relations audit was formed
through the use of questionnaires, focus groups and semi-structured interviews.
Theoretical knowledge with regard to corporate image and identity as well as attitude
formation was used as theoretical framework within the context of strategic communication
management by non-profit organizations. The attitudes of church members on the elements
of corporate identity were researched to determine the organization's image.
The results show that the church members don't have a positive or negative image of NG
Welsyn, since they don't have enough information about the organization. There is currently
no relationship between the two parties. The main conclusion is that NG Welsyn can
improve its image by the strategic management of communication with important publics. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Visser, Carla Martina January 2012 (has links)
The Student RAG Community Service (SRCS), a unique non-governmental organisation (NGO) of the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University, aims to support and to enable other NGOs to function independently. For this reason, the communication between the SRCS and these NGOs is viewed from the sub discipline of development communication, with the participative approach currently being perceived as the normative approach to communication for development.
Communication between the SRCS and representatives of the NGOs should therefore conform to the principles of the participative approach to development communication to contribute to empowerment and development. The principles of the participative approach that was identified as relevant to this study are participation, dialogue, cultural sensitivity, to enable the community to be self-reliant and community development.
This study is qualitative in nature and the research methods used to gather information about the nature of communication between the SRCS and the representatives of the projects are qualitative content analysis, partially structured interviews and observer–participant reporting.
Although this study has focused only on early child development projects, the nature of these projects and their communication varied to a large extent. The overall conclusion of this study is that there are gaps in the participative communication between the SRCS and the representatives of all the researched projects. The type of communication between the SRCS and early childhood development projects did not conform to the principles of cultural sensitivity, community development and the enablement of the community to be self-reliant. These gaps are attributed in part to the present documentation of the SRCS (2010 annual report, portfolio descriptions, transfer reports and minutes of 2010’s and 2011’s meetings) as well as the fact that this NGO’s training guidelines do not emphasise the importance of participatory principles, and do not offer sufficient training in the implementation of these principles to its various members.
Although the results indicate that the communication between the SRCS and the representatives of the projects presently does not conform to the principles of participative communication, the organisation is committed to addressing these gaps in future. / Thesis (MA (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Prescribing patterns of antidepressants with known off-label indications among adults / Jan Daniël le RouxLe Roux, Jan Daniël January 2014 (has links)
“Off-label use” is defined as the use of medicine for indications other than recommended or registered for, e.g. the prescribing of a particular active substance for a patient younger than the substance is recommended or indicated for, or different formulations or dosages of a substance (Ekins-Daukes et al., 2004:349; Stedman’s medical dictionary, 2006). Off-label prescribing is common, and fluctuates by physician, patient and drug (Eguale et al., 2012:781). Drug classes most commonly prescribed off-label include anti-asthmatic, cardiovascular drugs and antidepressants. Lee et al. (2012:140) found that 9 out of 10 antidepressants prescribed were associated with unapproved usage of antidepressants. An antidepressant can be defined as a substance that prevents or relieves depression or depressive episodes (Mosby, 2009:115).
There is paucity of information on the off-label prescribing practices of antidepressants in the South African private health sector. According to Eguale et al. (2012:781), the paucity of information on off-label prescribing practices may be, in part, ascribed to the difficulty in the establishment of reasons for treatment.
The objective of this study was to determine the prescribing patterns of antidepressants as well as to identify off-label prescribing of antidepressants among adults in a section of the private health sector of South Africa by using a medicine claims database. A quantitative and observational, descriptive cross-sectional design was followed in this study. Data for a period of a year, from January to December 2010 were obtained for analysis. The data set consisted of medicine claims for a total number of 1 220 289 patients, containing a total of 8 515 428 prescriptions and 20 527 777 medicine items.
The study population (patients receiving antidepressants 18 years and older) accounted for 14.8% (n = 1 220 289) of the total data set. The average age of patients receiving antidepressants was 56.1 ± 16.6 (median = 56.2) (Inter quartile range = 43.3–68.1). Results of the study showed that antidepressant prescriptions accounted for 8.3% (n = 8 515 428) of all prescriptions claimed during 2010.
A total 3.5 % (n = 20 527 777) of antidepressants were claimed during the study period. Using the DU90% method it was established that the majority of antidepressant medicine items were prescribed by general practitioners (i.e. 75.7%, n = 702 285) and psychiatrists (14.9%, n = 702 285). Almost 72% (n = 702 885) of antidepressant medicine items claimed for the study population were for women.
The most prescribed antidepressants (based on the DU90%) were amitriptyline (20.6%, n = 702 885), citalopram (19.2%), escitalopram (14.6%), fluoxetine (11.7%), venlafaxine (5.7%), paroxetine (5.2%), duloxetine (4.4%), sertraline (3.8%), bupropion (3.1%) and mirtazapine (2.6%).
Amitriptyline accounted for 82.4% of off-label prescriptions (n = 2 635), whereas escitalopram and fluoxetine accounted for 4.2% and 3.8%, respectively. The tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) were mostly prescribed off-label for migraine, headache and sleep disorders. The off-label prescribing of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) included menopause, schizophrenia and headache. The off-label indicated prescriptions of the serotonin and noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitors (SNRIs) were mostly for schizophrenia and other anxiety disorders. Mirtazapine, a serotonin modulator/tetracyclic antidepressant, was mostly prescribed off-label for anxiety disorders. Off-label prescriptions for bupropion, a noradrenaline and dopamine re-uptake inhibitor mainly included other anxiety disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Furthermore, the prescribed daily dose (PDD) of each active antidepressant for all off-label indications was determined.
In conclusion: This study investigated the off-label prescribing patterns of antidepressants among adults a section of the private health sector of a South Africa, using a large medicine claims database. Recommendations for future research were made. / MPham (Pharmacy Practice), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Building a culture of safety : the nature of communication between the Maquassi hills fire services and the community / Fourie, KFourie, Kristel January 2011 (has links)
Citizens in many provinces in South Africa have increasingly become more vocal about their unhappiness concerning service delivery in many departments of Government; their needs are not being met. Their violence and anger are usually aimed at emergency planners and government institutions, such as the police services, emergency medical services and fire services, therefore adding to various other challenges and difficulties these institution experience in carrying out their responsibilities (News Today, 2008). These institutions are also directly involved in the Disaster Risk Reduction process and play a key role in building a culture of safety and prevention within their communities by distributing knowledge and teaching skills (Twigg, 2004). Twigg (2004) argues that providing communities with information is the only way in which the scale, frequency, and complexity of disasters can be addressed. This should be
done by following a multi–disciplinary approach that includes participatory development communication as a tool. The term participatory development communication refers to communication between parties where information transfer is de–emphasised and the process of dialogue between participants is favoured (Jacobson & Kolluri, 1999). This allows for solutions to problems to be identified in a collective fashion (Twigg, 2004; Jacobson & Kolluri, 1999). In
light of the above the Maquassi Hills Fire Service’s relationship with the community has a major
impact on the contribution the fire services make to building a culture of safety and also to what
extent the community works towards building a culture of safety –– and thereby reducing
disaster risk within the community. This study, consequently, aims to investigate the current
relationship between the Maquassi Hills Fire Services and the community they serve, as well as
the role of participatory development communication in this relationship. In order to do so this
study explore various guidelines and principles set out by the literature in terms of participatory
development communication and culture of safety to establish to what extent the Maquassi
Hills Fire Services adhere to these principles and guidelines in their day–to–day functioning. This
has been done by using a qualitative research design. Data collection methods appropriate to
the qualitative research design were used to collect the necessary data. These methods
included focus group discussions with members of the communities in the Maquassi Hills area
and semi–structured interviews with the staff and management of the Maquassi Hills Fire
Services. Guidelines and principles established in theory were used to describe and evaluate the
current situation between the Maquassi Hills Fire Services and the surrounding communities to
5
whom they provide the service of fire fighting. The two main areas of theory addressed were
that of Participatory Development Communication and that of a culture of safety as it presents
in the Disaster Risk Reduction field. These were also the two main areas investigated in the
empirical phase of the study. From the research it was found that in terms of Participatory
Development Communication very little is being done by the fire services to establish dialogical
communication. Thus creating opportunities for communities to communicate with the fire
services by developing relevant communication channels is not being facilitated. However
communities are eager to establish such an interactive relationship with the fire services. The
data indicated that when the principles and guidelines for building a culture of safety are
considered there exist various positive aspects. If these aspects are utilised and facilitated in the
correct manner it may facilitate the process of building a culture of safety. It is therefore
recommended that the fire services should start interacting with the communities in the
Maquassi Hills area. Most of the issues experienced in the relationship between the fire services
and the communities can to some extent be ascribed to the fact that the fire services do not
reach out to the communities they serve. Interactions with the community should be based on
the principles of participatory development communication which will ensure that dialogue is
established and information is exchanged. Also very important in the Maquassi Hills area is
supplying the communities with relevant, regular, correct and coherent fire safety information
and skills. People in these communities need the necessary fire safety information to ensure
their safety in terms of fire. By allowing people in these communities to participate in planning
and implementing initiatives aimed at informing people, awareness campaigns and information
sessions will be suited to the specific areas. This will mean that communities receive
information relevant to their situation and circumstances and ultimately initiatives will be more
effective, allowing the opportunity for a good culture of safety with regard to fire to be built. / Thesis (M. Development and Management)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Previous issue date: 2016-06-13 / The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the institutional, organizational, technological, business, competitive and environment factors, which are influencing the agro-industrial system of biogas in western Paraná state (Brazil), due to the recycling activity of waste produced by the activities of pig farming. To reach the goal the following methodological procedures were used: hypothetical-deductive method and empirical and analytical research as working technique. Regarding the type of research, the study was descriptive, while the procedures used consisted in a field research (survey), the problem approach was qualitative. Finally the methodology used was the Discourse of the Collective Subject (DCS) method. A questionnaire with 25 open questions was applied to 14 leaders of the organizations involved in pig farming. The organizations surveyed are located in 10 municipalities most effective in pig farming in Western of Paraná. The theoretical framework is based on the New Institutional Economics - NIE, reporting to the model proposed by Farina, 1999. The description of the western Paraná state was realized by exposing its data on pig production. It was also presented biogas system, its origin, and characteristics, how it appears in the Brazilian and world energy matrix, highlighting as it shows the environment, the institutional environments, competitive, business, organizational and technological of its system. After, the view of related organizations with pig production and the consequent production of biogas in western Paraná was exposed. The agro-industrial system of biogas in the Western of Paraná state is in its early stage, and it has a good way still to go. At the institutional scope can be highlighted the Resolução Normativa ANP nº 8/2015 (a Brazilian Normative Resolution presented by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels ANP), as the resource that will support the system. Organizations linked to biogas in Western Paraná state have few contributions with regard to biogas; they have not acted together, leaving to join forces to progress. In the technological environment it was found that there needs to develop advances for use in small farms, which are prevalent in the study environment, missing prove that this technology is sufficient and that can give some return for the activity. Regarding the competitive environment was found that biogas is still not a product it has market. The transactions do not exist, bringing many uncertainties and mistrust of information provided. With the environment there is a constant concern, even so the producer makes a logical connection, stating that there is a need for return on investment.

Die identifisering van veerkragtigheid en nie-veerkragtigheid by die middel-adolessent in ‘n voormalige Model C-skool (Afrikaans)Parsons, Joreta 05 September 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop a way of identifying resilient and non-resilient middle-adolescent learners, by means of an instrument or otherwise, in a former Model C-school. The research paradigm is pragmatism and a methodology of mixed methods was used. A questionnaire was developed and qualitative interviews were conducted to verify the results of the questionnaire. The theoretical framework of resilience as well as the developmental phase of middle-adolescence were studied. After conducting a pilot study, the necessary changes were made and an experimental version of the questionnaire was compiled on the basis of Kumpfer’s Transactional Model. This framework includes both processes and outcomes and six main constructs were specified, viz. stressors or challenges, the environmental context, person-environment-transactional process, internal resilience factors, resilience processes and outcomes or means of reintegration. Focus was placed on internal resilience factors. The “Veerkragtigheidsvraelys vir Middel-adolessente (toets)” (VVM-A(t)) (Resilience Questionnaire for Middleadolescents (test)), was compiled consisting of forty two self-evaluation questions using a continuum scale. This self-evaluation scale gives the respondent the opportunity to respond on a continuum line between not like me at all and exactly like me. The place of research, a secondary school in an area reflecting the diversity of the South-African population, was selected by means of convenience sampling and all the grade 8 and 9 learners (294 participants) completed the VVM-A(t). Two factors were identified by means of factor analysis viz. internal locus of control and external locus of control. The VVM-A, consisting of 22 items, was finalised from these results and the participants’ scores were recalculated for the selected items. Interviews for the purpose of verification or rejection of the VVM-A were conducted with twelve participants, four from the group with high scores, four from the group with low scores and four learners that grouped near the median. The in-depth interviews confirmed the results on the VVM-A. This instrument can therefore be regarded as valid and reliable to identify the resilient and non-resilient middle-adolescent learner. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Non-binary LDPC coded STF-MIMO-OFDM with an iterative joint receiver structureLouw, Daniel Johannes 20 September 2010 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation was to design a realistic, low-complexity non-binary (NB) low density parity check (LDPC) coded space-time-frequency (STF) coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with an iterative joint decoder and detector structure at the receiver. The goal of the first part of the dissertation was to compare the performance of different design procedures for NB-LDPC codes on an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, taking into account the constraint on the code length. The effect of quantisation on the performance of the code was also analysed. Different methods for choosing the NB elements in the parity check matrix were compared. For the STF coding, a class of universal STF codes was used. These codes use linear pre-coding and a layering approach based on Diophantine numbers to achieve full diversity and a transmission rate (in symbols per channel use per frequency) equal to the number of transmitter antennas. The study of the system considers a comparative performance analysis of di erent ST, SF and STF codes. The simulations of the system were performed on a triply selective block fading channel. Thus, there was selectivity in the fading over time, space and frequency. The effect of quantisation at the receiver on the achievable diversity of linearly pre-coded systems (such as the STF codes used) was mathematically derived and verified with simulations. A sphere decoder (SD) was used as a MIMO detector. The standard method used to create a soft-input soft output (SISO) SD uses a hard-to-soft process and the max-log-map approximation. A new approach was developed which combines a Hopfield network with the SD. This SD-Hopfield detector was connected with the fast Fourier transform belief propagation (FFT-BP) algorithm in an iterative structure. This iterative system was able to achieve the same bit error rate (BER) performance as the original SISO-SD at a reduced complexity. The use of the iterative Hopfield-SD and FFT-BP decoder system also allows performance to be traded off for complexity by varying the number of decoding iterations. The complete system employs a NB-LDPC code concatenated with an STF code at the transmitter with a SISO-SD and FFT-BP decoder connected in an iterative structure at the receiver. The system was analysed in varying channel conditions taking into account the effect of correlation and quantisation. The performance of different SF and STF codes were compared and analysed in the system. An analysis comparing different numbers of FFT-BP and outer iterations was also done. ’n Sfeerdekodeerder (SD) is gebruik as ’n MIMO-detektor.
