An Implementation of BFT Consensus for Ethereum

Shiu, Yi-Jiun Unknown Date (has links)
Blockchain is a kind of distributed ledger technology, which is based on P2P network protocol and a distributed consensus mechanism. It has developed rapidly in recent years. There are many kinds of blockchains, such as the most noted ones, Bitcoin and Ethereum, the latter of which contains a Turing complete language for developing programs running on top of it. A core technical component of a blockchain is its consensus mechanism, which implements the method of reaching consensus about what transactions have been done among all peer nodes in the network. The consensus mechanism of Bitcoin and Etheruem are Proof of Work (PoW), which is often referred to as mining. Although Proof of Work is suitable for public blockchains, it may become a burden for private or consortium blockchains. The objective of this thesis is to extend the consensus module of Ethereum with Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) consensus algorithm, which can speed up the consensus process significantly when the number of network peers is not large. This can be a key step for making Ethereum suitable for suporting consortium blockchains.

Blockchain and Currency Exchange Platform

Liu, Yu Hung Unknown Date (has links)
In current society, "travelling" is already an integral part of their life. For travelling abroad, we will purchase the currency of the tourist destination first and then sell the remaining currency after the tour: The objects of trading are all banks. That means the bank plays an intermediary role and can earn the exchange difference from this trading. However, if it is supposed that there is a platform which people could directly find a person who needs the currency, both of the buyer and seller can get an applicable exchange rate according to some reasonable mechanism, and then they can directly exchange at that exchange rate. In this case, not only the currency can be bought at a better exchange rate, but also they could save the original fee which they pay to the bank. However, it becomes a very important issue to establish the "trust" relationship during the trade. The blockchain is a kind of technologies that relies on independent nodes to store, verify, delivery and exchange network data without relying on a third party. There are the properties of decentralization, transparency, openness, independence, security, anonymity….and so on. We can use the nature of the blockchain to strengthen the trust between buyers and sellers, in order to increase the security of this platform. This study will explore the feasibility of this platform.

Blockchain and Sharing Economy

Unknown Date (has links)
The number of outbound travel had increased a lot because of new living style. The sharing economy has also been emerged from the new internet age. The concept of sharing economy is to utilize idle resources, through the Internet platform to share, rent them at a reasonable price and other people in need. That is, people have new option to "lease" instead of "buy". In the case of sharing economy of housing such as Aribnb in the P2P housing website, people can only refer to the housing photos and information provided by the landlord before booking the premises on the platform, but people is not able to confirm the authenticity of the information. And both parties can only rely on the lease on the evaluation of the site to judge each other's conduct. But all this information might be false, so how do we trust the other side on the platform, is a very important issue. As a result, we can strengthen the trust of both parties through the blockchain technology and improve some of the problems and pain points facing the P2P housing website. Blockchain is a technology that doesn't rely on third parties to store, validate, transmit and communicate network data through its own distributed nodes. The technology has the characteristics of decentralized, transparency, openness and security and so on. These characteristics can strengthen the trust between the two parties and to ensure that all the information stored in the blockchain. Therefore, this thesis uses Airbnb as a case to discuss the current Airbnb operating model and the impact on business model with the addition of blockchain.

應用區塊鏈之金融KYC平台 / The banking KYC platform based on blockchain technology

Yang, King-Hsiang Unknown Date (has links)
KYC(Know Your Customer)是銀行非常重要的一項程序,除了法規上的遵循外,也同時要滿足控制客戶投資風險和防制洗錢的目的,但各銀行重複花費大量的金錢和時間成本在相同客戶KYC資料的收集和驗證上。 / KYC (Know Your Customer) is a very important procedure for banks not only for regulatory compliance, but also to meet the controls of customer investment risk and the purpose of money laundering control. It takes a lot of money and time in the process of verifying the same customer’s information for each bank. Blockchain is a decentralized ledger platform that uses cryptography and consensus algorithm to ensure that transactional data can not be tampered with, and is known as a “Trust Machine”. Without changing current KYC procedures, this study build a "Banking KYC Platform" based on blockchain technology. And let the KYC validation be only conducted once for each customer between banks. This platform does not use centralized database. The original KYC data is stored in bank's local database. Banks verifiy customer KYC data’s correctness and completeness through blockchain and synchronize them based on the information recorded in blockchain. This study shows the result of verifying seven KYC use cases with this Banking KYC Platform. It is a complete demonstration for reaching the goal of solving security, efficiency and cost reduction problems.

DaoFund.com

Ho, Leo Unknown Date (has links)
Transparency has been one of the most important factors/concerns affecting donations. Donors are not sure where their money goes and the difficulty of finding such information makes them hesitate on making donations. On the other hand, NPOs are haunted by lack of donation, governments scratch their heads on regulating the governance of NPOs, and academia find it difficult to collect donation-related data for research purpose. Blockchain, the upstart technology that backs up bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, is born to solve the trust issue among different parties by providing ultimate transparency. However, adopting a new technology is never easy. Some traction needs to be in-place to engage people on technology adoption. Fortunately, the same technology that pulls people together is also the technology that will be able to build up the community and making a bigger social impact. DaoFund.com is funded with making social impact in mind by bringing aforementioned technologies to the society.

The development and challenge of insurance industry in the era of financial technology

Unknown Date (has links)

A study of e-invoice system based on Blockchaintechnology

Scott Miau Unknown Date (has links)
Different e-invoice systems are designed to meet different needs and application scenarios. Although these systems areuseful and readily available, researchers and businesses hope to be able to expand the coverage of e-invoice systems using Blockchain technologies. This study proposes an e-invoice system based on Blockchain technologies which shows anotherapplication scenario of Blockchain technology and e-invoice system. First, a review of about 980 publicationson e-invoicing and Blockchain was carried outwithinformetrics used for further analysis so as to better understandthe development of e-invoice and Blockchain technologies. Second, the concepts and mechanisms of Bitcoin and Blockchain technologies were reviewed. Finally, an e-invoice system based on Ethereumwas proposed. The proposed system meets the six needs of an e-invoice system: integrity, authenticity, availability, auditability, non-repudiation and traceability. It is not only suitable for issuing general invoices but also can play a role in further invoicing applications such as invoice financing as well as agri-food supply chain traceability. In the future, Openchain or hybrid Blockchain infrastructure that combines public and private nodes can be consideredfor use in this proposed e-invoice system.

Streamlining Medical Insurance Claims Processing With Smart Contracts

Lin, Chan Min Unknown Date (has links)
Current medical insurance claims application process is complex. It requires the insured to apply for medical diagnosis, and to fill out an application form to the insurance company. The insurance company then reviews the case. If they are unable to approve the claims, they must first obtain the consent form from the insured in order to access to his or her medical records to facilitate subsequent claims review. Throughout the process, the insurance company needs to pay a lot of labor costs; while the insured will have many concerns of information transparency. Blockchain operates in an open and transparent manner and maintains its data in a tamper-free way. Smart contracts are programs executed on a blockchain platform to enforce an agreement such that the program will not be tampered with, and all records of execution will be kept from modification. These characteristics of a smart contract make it very good as a tool for streamlining the medical insurance claims process, as it will greatly reduce the human efforts involved on the insurance company side while increase the information transparency from the perspective of the insured. This thesis presents a smart contract based solution for streamlining the medical insurance claims process. We design and implement the con-tract on the Ethereum platform. In addition to improving the existing problems, our solution builds an open and transparent claims system that takes into account the patient privacy and the practical requirement of re-using the existing claims processing system of the insurance company, thus achieving a proper balance between the ideal and reality.

Applying Empowerment Strategy to Facilitate Collective Commitment toward Shared Goal of Stakeholders within a Blockchain-based Digital Ecosystem Design

Unknown Date (has links)
Blockchain, a de-centralized infrastructure which can breed many kinds of disruptive applications, is a promising platform for next generation digital ecosystems. All applications built upon blockchain benefits multiple advantages, including transactions manageability, scalability, security, visibility, affordability, high availability, etc. However, stakeholder management in blockchain-based businesses will become a very challenging issue for entrepreneurs to deal with their de-centralize characteristics. Without the management and enforcement of a central party, creating collective efficacy and achieving collective commitment among all stakeholders will be crucial for these entrepreneurs. This research adopts the empowerment perspective to propose a method to solve this issue and facilitate the design of a blockchain ecosystem toward collective efficacy. The method can be divided into three parts. The first is to analyze and collect necessary data from the source of business logic in the context of blockchain smart contract. The second is to utilize these data and liquefy the resources available in the current ecosystem so that the stakeholders can empower each other without the support of central party. The third is to measure the degree of collective efficacy and collective commitment in the ecosystem design in order to identify the effectiveness of our empowerment method.
