Paradigmas de analise conceitual em Wittgenstein / Paradigms of conceptual analysis in Wittgenstein

Azize, Rafael Lopes 12 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Arley Ramos Moreno / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-12T10:40:44Z (GMT). / Abstract: This work investigates the philosophical activity of conceptual analysis as conceived by the latter Wittgenstein, from the point of view of the way in which it contributes to exhibit the casuistic limits of sense after the Tractatus. Conceptual analysis is thus considered particularly from the point of view of its scope, of its terminus. Three moments are pinpointed, corresponding to the three chapters: 1. the moment when rules are introduced as objects of analysis, in the context of the corresponding systems of rules; 2. the moment of pluralization of the systems of rules, i.e., when the field of a rule's clarification extrapolates to chained systems, and the concept of language game is introduced to account for the mode of such continuity; and finally, 3. the moment in which conceptual analysis finds its outer boundaries in the very broad and vague context (die Umgebung) of the form of life. Parallel to this, more specific aspects are outlined, relative to the differences between the three paradigms of analysis: 1. the different procedures of analysis, or clarification, required by each paradigm; 2. what counts as a concept in each paradigm; and finally, 3. a wider movement, which is revealed in a retrospective consideration of the three paradigms, of broadening of the analytical scope, toward the pragmatic environment / Doutorado / Doutor em Filosofia

[en] LIFE IN THE CLASSROOM: WHERE EXPLORATORY PRACTICE AND PSYCHOANALYSIS MEET / [pt] A VIDA NA SALA DE AULA: PONTO DE ENCONTRO DA PRÁTICA EXPLORATÓRIA COM A PSICANÁLISE

MARIA DE LOURDES DUARTE SETTE 27 April 2006 (has links)
[en] The objective of this thesis was to enhance my understanding about the pedagogical relationship constructed between myself, as teacher, and a group of students taking a course in English as a foreign language (EFL) in the corporation where they work. In order to achieve this aim, I kept a diary during the eight months of the course. In addition to this diary, I also analyzed the exploratory potential generated by the pedagogical activities of the students in the classroom and the written messages sent by them to me. The perceived interweaving of the socio-historical and individual aspects, at a conscious and unconscious level, which are present in the utterances of the course participants and registered in the above-mentioned documents, led me to bring together three discourses - Exploratory Practice, Psychoanalysis and the Philosophy of Language of Mikhail Bakhtin - in order to understand more deeply the nature of the pedagogical relationship and of the quality of life in the classroom. The data analysis also enabled me to perceive the importance of paying attention to the individualaffective aspects present in the pedagogical environment. I address the central contribution of these aspects to the construction of the loving nature of the pedagogical relationship, which I identify as monological and/or dialogical, based on the relationships perceived by me in my pedagogic practice. The intended contribution of my thesis lies in approximating the knowledge and reflective posture of teachers oriented by Exploratory Practice to the knowledge of Freud- Lacan´s psychoanalysis about the human subject and to some key concepts of the Philosophy of Language. Thus, this thesis seeks to fill a gap perceived in the field of teaching English as a foreign language, on account of the scarcity of theories that derive from teacher-researchers´ professional practice.

[en] REASON AND PSYCHOANALYSIS: THE CASE OF SCHREBER (FREUD,1911), REVISITED FROM THE MARCIA CAVELL´S AND LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN S CONTRIBUTIONS / [pt] RAZÃO E PSICANÁLISE: CASO SCHREBER (FREUD, 1911), REVISITADO A PARTIR DAS CONTRIBUIÇÕES DE MARCIA CAVELL E LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN

Discutimos sumariamente a relação: terapia filosófica e psicanálise. / [en] This thesis represents the second part of the research: Reason and Psychoanalysis. The research aims to investigate, within the contemporary Anglo- Saxon debate, the epistemological foundations of psychoanalytical theory and whether it presents itself as an adequate tool for investigating madness and its manifestations. The first part of the thesis corresponds to a current summary of philosophical appraisals of psychoanalysis, in the traditional field of research development. It presents the following appraisals: Karl Popper s, Adolf Grünbaum s, Gregorio Klimovsky´s and Larry Laudan s criticism and alternative regarding Anglo-Saxon epistemology. The next appraisal is Marcia Cavell s one, already in the scope of the modern philosophy of language, initiating the second part of research. The next topic is: Wittgenstein and Psychoanalysis - his complex relation to the Freudian proposal, his enthusiasm and criticism. We show our own appraisal of Wittgenstein s contribution, linking it to a development of psychoanalysis: the object-relation theory. From the latter we took the Kleinian vision as referential and particularly W. R. Bion s contributions. The Case of Schreber (Freud,1911) is presented and investigated as a case study, with the aim of evaluating the validity of the philosophical and psychoanalytic notions previously exposed; particularly the notions of internal irrationalism (Cavell) and ways of living and certainty (Wittgenstein). The thesis suggests that delusion (taken as a paradigm of madness) may be seen as: a bizarre way of living, also suggesting some candidates as invariants for madness and its manifestations in varied contexts. We briefly discuss the relation between philosophical therapy and psychoanalysis. The background to the thesis is identified as what is known as the crisis of psychoanalysis, which we have placed within another, more comprehensive and durable one, the crisis of modernity. The thesis favours the clinical dimension of psychoanalytic project, suggesting new perspectives for it, through its dimension as a critique of culture. It calls attention to the two facets - clinical and cultural - of Freud´s work and the importance of establishing their differences and relations.

Full-bloodedness, modesty and minimalist truth

Billinge, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
This thesis discusses the central ideas that surround Michael Dummett's claim that there is an incompatibility between a truth-conditional conception of meaning and a minimalist conception of truth. These ideas are brought into relation to the work of John McDowell and Donald Davidson, as all three philosophers can be better understood by locating them within Dummett's dialectic regarding the incompatibility. Dummett's argument crucially depends upon the assumption that a meaning-theory should be full-blooded in nature, against McDowell's insistence that a meaning-theory can only ever be modest. The main contention of this thesis is that neither Dummett nor McDowell is successful in establishing their strong contentions regarding the form that a meaning-theory should take. McDowell only wants to provide trivial answers to questions about the constitutive nature of the meanings and competency of particular items in a language. Dummett, on the other hand, wants to provide a reductive account of the central concepts that concern the philosophy of language. What this thesis will argue is that once both of these claims have been rejected, the position Dummett and McDowell jointly dictate is in fact the position that we should read Davidson as occupying, who lies in a conceptual space between the extremes of maximal full-bloodedness and modesty. This is an understanding of Davidson that is contrary to how McDowell reads him, who has been an influential commentator of Davidson. How Davidson should actually be interpreted is achieved by understanding how he has the resources to avoid Dummett's claim of an incompatibility between a truth-conditional conception of meaning and a minimalist conception of truth.

Sdělování "nevyslovitelného". Poselství skrytá v tvorbě a životě Mišimy Jukia / Speaking of the "Unspeakable". Messages hidden in the Work and in the Life of Mishima Yukio

Nymburská, Dita January 2013 (has links)
1 Summary My dissertation focuses on Mishima Yukio and the way the author, who strongly occupied himself with reflections on the imperfection of human language during the last decade of his life, conveyed the things that he was not able to or did not want to express explicitly. The dissertation is based on the metaphor of four rivers flowing into the Sea of Fertility, one of the arid lunar maria, that the writer used for his 'inconsistent' life shortly before his death. The four rivers that merged in Mishima's final work, the grandiose tetralogy The Sea of Fertility, represented four areas of the author's life. Each of them allowed him to express his ideas and feelings in a slightly different way. The River of Writing represented his fiction, the River of Theater showed his plays and his acting, the River of Body emphasized the role of bodybuilding and other sports in his life and finally, the River of Action revealed how the effeminate writer had transformed himself into a 'man of action'. The first section of my dissertation deals with Mishima's view on verbal communication. Although Mishima was a renowned writer and playwright who for the most part led a hardworking life and poured most of his energy into his writing, his attitude towards words was rather ambivalent. On the one hand, Mishima loved...

Hlas rozumu. Studie ke Kantově kritické filosofii / The Voice of Reason. A study of Kant's Critical Philosophy

Pech, Robin January 2021 (has links)
Philosophy is traditionally defined against rhetoric. The traditional difference between philosophy and rhetoric is based on a distinction between truthful and persuasive speech. The history of philosophy offers a number of examples how to approach the relationship between truth and persuasiveness. However, this relationship was traditionally taken in such a way so that philosophy could be defined against rhetoric. This approach can also be found in the texts of Immanuel Kant. From this point of view, Kant's project of critical philosophy can be interpreted as an attempt to purify philosophy and separate it from rhetoric. But when Kant defines the philosophy against rhetoric, he falls into obvious contradiction. As the critical philosophy helps to realize the ideas of the Enlightenment, thus, it also helps to spread the light of reason. However, the spread of general enlightenment requires an effective link between philosophy and rhetoric, i.e. between truth and persuasiveness. Since the critical philosophy is the instrument of enlightenment, it acquires its rhetorical dimension. A closer examination of the rhetorical dimension of Kant's critical philosophy, which still represents a certain desideratum of Kant Studies, thus opens up completely new research and interpretation possibilities.

Towards a Neopragmatist Understanding of Translation: A Cross-Disciplinary and Cross-Medial Survey

Scheer, Steffani 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Maria Tymoczko (2005) highlights four research trajectories that are likely to be at the forefront of translation studies in coming decades: the attempt to define translation, the internationalization of translation, the impact of technology and globalization on translation theory, and the contextualization of translation studies relative to other areas of academic inquiry. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the first research trajectory. I hope to enrich current developments in translation studies by offering a new way of conceptualizing translation based upon pragmatist philosophy and its particular approach to language and epistemology. Specifically I build upon certain passages from the works of the contemporary neopragmatist philosopher Richard Rorty (1979; 1989; 1998; 1999) in order to develop a neopragmatist understanding of translation. I demonstrate the cross-disciplinary applicability of a neopragmatist understanding of translation, focusing in particular on visual art, popular science, and political history. I also demonstrate how the neopragmatist framework can be of use in constructing a theory of intersemiotic translation, by means of three case studies of translation between different media. The approach I develop offers a robust philosophical grounding for expanding our conceptualization of translation. Such an approach is motivated by recent research in translation studies highlighting the need for an expanded definition of translation in light of the following issues: traditional definitions of translation tend to be based upon Western views, thus neglecting the diverse international conceptions of translation and contributing to the cultural hegemony of the West; the term “translation” is used in more contexts than traditional definitions would predict; translation is not simply an operation between texts, but can also occur across semiotic systems; translation is not a method of relaying messages across languages through the mediation of a neutral translator, but is instead a complex interface in which a network of cultural, political, socio-historical, communicative, creative, and interpretative factors are intertwined. A neopragmatist framework is useful for building an understanding of translation that responds to the above issues, helping scholars to refine an adequately descriptive and generalized theory of translation.

Vagueness and Its Boundaries: A Peircean Theory of Vagueness

Agler, David Wells 26 February 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Many theories of vagueness employ question-begging assumptions about the semantic boundaries between truth and falsity. This thesis defends a theory of vagueness put forward by Charles S. Peirce and argues for a novel solution to the sorites paradox based upon his work. Contrary to widespread opinion, I argue that Peirce distinguished borderline vagueness from other related forms of indeterminacy, e.g. indefiniteness, generality, unspecificity, uninformativity, etc. By clarifying Peirce’s conception of borderline vagueness, I argue for a solution to the sorites paradox based upon his logical semantics. In addition, I argue for this theory against the epistemic theory of vagueness, which makes controversial claims concerning the sharp semantic boundary between truth and falsity, and against the supervaluationist theory of vagueness, which is committed to the in principle impossibility of sharp semantics boundaries for propositions with vague terms.

DE LA MÉTAPHORE À LA MÉTAFICTION: LA CODIFICATION DU POSSIBLE DANS LE CYCLE DU PONT D'ÉLISABETH VONARBURG

Benson, Gillian L. 10 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts (MA)
