Wissen und Streiten in der Aufklärungsepoche: Ein neues Akademieprojekt in Leipzig

Schneider, Ulrich Johannes, Schock, Flemming 23 March 2012 (has links)

We also intend to highlight the use of images for the purpose of registration and circulation of knowledge. However, to develop this study in the field of History of Science, we chose as a case study the work A New Herball, published in 1568 by the british scholar William Turner (c.1510-1568). From this work, we present some discussions about the use of images and their relevance for the knowledge about nature at that time. We complement this work with a didactic sequence acting in the interface between the History of Science and Teaching, emphasizing science as human construction and the relevance of images in the process of communication of knowledge / Neste estudo, analisamos a relevância das imagens em herbários do século XVI, salientando principalmente alguns aspectos da relação imagem e texto presentes nos livros desse período. Irländska kvinnor vid the Old Bailey : Synen på irländska kvinnliga förbrytare i London 1674-1900 / Irish women at the Old Bailey : Society’s view of Irish female perpetrators at the Old Bailey 1674-1900

Blückert, Johan January 2010 (has links)
<p>The Irish immigrants have been an important part of London throughout the centuries. Their presence can be found from the 17th century and onwards. Initially occupied as seasonal workers in agrarian fields the Irish later found alternative ways of supporting themselves as the Industrial Revolution transformed the whole of England. Despite their vital importance to the construction of what was to be known as "the modern Babylon" the Irish have been victims of both social prejudice and maltreatment. Some historians have imposed a comparison between the Irish in England and the African slaves in the United States. They have viewed the Irish with the spectacles of modern racism and in their presumptions created an unfair image of the relationship of the British and the Irish as the European equivalent of that of the African slaves and the American slave owners. Not content with superimposing the image of "the racist Englishman" solely on the 19th century, scholars such as L. P Curtis and R. N. Lebow have sought to explain any questionable act committed by the British as a sign of xenophobia towards their Celtic neighbours, whether it be Cromwell’s Irish Campaign in 1649 or the lack of British aid during the Great Famine in Ireland in the 1840s.</p><p>This essay sets out to examine how Irish <em>women</em> were perceived at the Old Bailey Session House in London. Women have always received verdicts of a more lenient character than their male counterparts. It is therefore plausible to suppose that, if Cutis and Lebow are correct in their assumptions, Irish women should receive harsher verdicts and a higher frequency of those committed than those acquitted of crimes in comparison with their British counterparts, which simply is not the case.</p>

A critical annotated translation of Zubdat al-ḥaqā'iq of 'Ayn al-Quḍāh al-Hamadāni

Jah, Omar January 1965 (has links)
It is believed that the traditional hostility between Sufism and the Orthodox Schools in Islam came to an end, only after the conversion of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d.505/1111) to Sufism. He was able to reconcile Sufism with Islamic Orthodoxy. However, Sufism received another moral boost, later from the work of 'Ayn al-Qudah, Zubdat al-Haqa'iq. This thesis is basically concerned with presenting the work in a critically annotated translation. This translation is accompanied by an introduction, which attempts to put the work in a proper historical perspective within the political and intellectual milieu of the time. It also analyses his contribution to the intellectual of Sufism and indicates the major points of discussion in his work.
