Como anexo, o trabalho inclui, igualmente, a edição das quatro obras apresentadas / Abstract: This dissertation aims at looking at the paths taken by conductor José Pedro de Sant?Anna Gomes (1834 - 1908); his activity as musician and conductor in the city of Campinas during the late nineteenth century, and at presenting the relevance of his work for the activity of music groups that were formed in the city during the same period. The investigation shows the inter-relationship established between the conductor?s work and the activities of the groups, highlighted by the wide scope of the former?s work, and the latter?s complex social environment. Several sources have been used: chronicles by travelling reporters, Sant?Anna Gomes?s repertoire for the formation of bands, besides data referring to the music activity in Campinas during the nineteenth century. In terms of organization, the paper first presents a brief biography of Sant?Anna Gomes underlining important aspects of his works. Secondly, this work focuses topics pertaining to band activities in the city, extensively analyzing several aspects. Here, we have included social and urban aspects that have been interpreted as relevant to the changes that the city underwent, as well as the several social sectors that had music bands. By following this line of thought, we suggest the importance of a common taste, directing the music band?s repertoire and contributing to greater "permeability? despite such different sectors. Lastly, this dissertation presents the four original pieces for band instrumentation by Sant?Anna Gomes: Valsa Club Campineiro, Quadrilha Club Semanal, Polka Sem Fim e Polka Filuta, and establishes their importance within the cultural-historical period in which they are set. As part of the appendix, the paper also includes the four pieces here studied / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

A Comparison of Morris' News from Nowhere and Life in the Twin Oaks CommunityGarner, Royce Clifton 12 1900 (has links)
It is the purpose of this paper to explore how Morris' novel relates to life in Twin Oaks, primarily as depicted in two books: Living the Dream (1983) by Ingrid Komar, a long-term visitor to the commune and Kinkade's Is It Utopia Yet? (1996). This comparison will demonstrate that the experiences of contemporary intentional communities such as Twin Oaks provide a meaningful context for reading News from Nowhere because of the similarities in goals and philosophy. It will further demonstrate that though Twin Oaks was originally inspired by a utopian novel much more in the tradition of Bellamy's work than Morris', the community's subsequent evolution has brought it much closer in philosophy to News from Nowhere than Looking Backward.

Physiological and microbiological studies of nectar xylose metabolism in the Namaqua rock mouse, Aethomys namaquensis (A. Smith, 1834)Johnson, Shelley Anne 24 August 2006 (has links)
Xylose is an unusual nectar sugar found in the nectar of Protea and Faurea (Proteaceae). Since nectar composition is an important floral characteristic in plant strategies for ensuring reproductive success, the unexplained presence of xylose in Protea nectar prompted this study of the interaction between pollinators and Protea species. Among pollinators that visit Proteaflowers in the south-western Cape Floral Kingdom, South Africa, insects and birds show an aversion to, and are poor assimilators of, xylose, whereas rodents such as Namaqua rock mice Aethomys namaquensis are the only pollinators so far shown to consume xylose willingly, and are able to obtain metabolic energy from this sugar. Mammalian tissues are not capable of catabolizing xylose efficiently, but certain gastrointestinal microflora are, through a process of fermentation which produces short-chain fatty acids used by host animals in oxidative metabolism. I explored mechanisms enabling Aethomys namaquensis to utilize xylose, in particular, the role of resident intestinal microflora in this process. Chapter One discusses pollination syndromes and the definitions thereof, mammal pollination, with particular reference to Australia and South Africa, and explains the rationale behind the questions addressed in this thesis. To assess xylose utilization in wild-caught mice with and without their natural gastrointestinal microflora, an antibiotic treatment was developed (Chapter Two). The veterinary antimicrobial agent, Baytril 10% oral solution, was found to be effective in significantly reducing gut microflora in animals on a four-day treatment protocol. The protocol developed here reduced the gut microflora sufficiently for subsequent experiments comparing xylose utilization in mice with and without intact microflora. Xylose utilization was assessed using 14C-labelled xylose (Chapter Three). Rock mice were caught during Protea humifloraflowering and non-flowering seasons, and fed 14C-labelled xylose. Exhaled CO 2 and excreted urine and faeces were collected, and label recovery determined. These experiments showed that xylose-utilizing bacteria in the rock mouse gut are very important for xylose utilization. More efficient xylose utilization during the flowering season suggests that this component of the gut microflora is inducible. Culturable gut microflora were then isolated from rock mouse faecal and caecal samples, assessed for xylose utilization to identify positive xylose-fermenters and classified by 16S rRNA based taxonomy (Chapter Four). Faecal isolates were Lactobacillus murinus and Enterococcus faecium, and caecal isolates were three Bacillus species, Shigella boydii, one Arthrobacter species and two fungal isolates from Aspergillus and Penicillium genera. The types and concentrations of short-chain fatty acids arising from xylose fermentation by caecal microflora were measured using gas chromatography. The fatty acid profile produced by rock mouse gut microflora is similar to that for other animals that rely on gut microbial fermentation to produce fatty acids then used in oxidative metabolism. Chapter Five concludes with a discussion of possible explanations for the presence of xylose as a nectar sugar, its ecological significance, and the relevance of the fermentative capacity of pollinator digestive systems for xylose utilization in animals. / Thesis (PhD (Zoology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Zoology and Entomology / unrestricted

Tesis

Les restaurations du décor sculpté du château de Blois au XIXe siècle à travers l'étude de son fonds lapidaire / The restorations of the decorative patterns of the Château de Blois in the 19 th [nineteenth] century through the analysis of its lapidary collectionChaumier-Bouron, Morgane 22 March 2016 (has links)
Le château de Blois est ainsi un chantier-modèle, tant par l’exemplarité des restaurations dont il est l’objet que par l’intégration, assumée, du XIXe siècle à son histoire / Classified on the first list of “Historic Monuments” and the first civil building to have its restoration requested and funded by the French State, the Chateau of Blois was the object of two renovation programmes starting in 1843 and respectively supervised by Félix Duban (1797-1870) and Anatole de Baudot (1834-1915). An outstanding synthesis of the history of French architecture, the chateau was also the experimenting field for various techniques, methods and approaches of restoration appearing in the 19th century and stimulating the national debate, in which Viollet-le-Duc played a major role. These unique inventory and analysis of the lapidary collection of the Chateau of Blois, to which are added the studies, the mock models, and the plaster casts of the decorative patterns before their restoration, allow to renew the knowledge about the carved décor of the Louis XII’s and the Francis I’s wings. This study puts into perspective the plaster casts, the stones taken off the facades, the present facades, the manuscript and iconographic sources, and it hereby brings to light the specificities of each restoration campaign, their differences and their complementarity. It highlights two different perceptions of the Renaissance and the way they were expressed in the stone by the 19th-century architects. Thus, thanks to its exemplary restoration and the way it integrated the 19th century into its own history, the Chateau of Blois acts as a true model for restoration campaigns
