Circling The Waters: The Keichō Embassy and Japanese-Spanish Relations in the Early Seventeenth Century

Batts, Joshua Paul January 2017 (has links)
This project examines the fraught diplomatic and commercial relations between Tokugawa Japan (1600–1868) and the Habsburg Spanish empire in the early seventeenth century. Vessels from Japan called at the port of Acapulco in New Spain three times within a decade, the first attempt in world history at a bilateral commercial relationship across the Pacific. In doing so, the ships also challenged the Spanish monopoly over the waterways between Latin America and Asia. Japanese commercial and diplomatic outreach peaked with the Keichō Embassy to Southern Europe (1613–1620), an effort that dispatched Japanese representatives to the court of Philip III in Madrid, but failed in its mission to secure regular contact between New Spain and northeastern Japan. In analyzing these events, I contrast Japan’s pursuit of commercial and diplomatic expansion with Spanish ambivalence and insularity, inverting essentializing narratives defined by Japanese isolation and European engagement. The project also compares the diplomatic models employed by each polity. I argue that Spain’s established imperial vision and the shogunate’s emerging hierarchical model of foreign relations placed each polity at the pinnacle of their respective diplomatic frameworks, handicapping efforts to communicate, build trust, and integrate each into the worldview of the other. Ultimately, a Spanish policy of containment closed off the Americas to Japan; soon after, the Tokugawa divested from its relationship with the Spanish Philippines in the face of alternative commercial partners and ongoing religious tension. The project thus integrates Japanese history into world history and the history of the Pacific, while questioning the notion of a straightforward commitment to expansion among Europe’s early-modern empires.

The Joseon Fine Art Exhibition under Japanese colonial rule

Lee, Yoon Yung January 2013 (has links)
At the turn of the twentieth century, as Japan expanded its territory by colonizing other Asian nations, the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed in 1910 and Korea lost its sovereignty. In political turmoil, the formation of national and cultural identity was constantly challenged, and the struggle was not argued in words alone. It was also embedded in various types of visual cultures, with narratives changing under the shifting political climate. This thesis focuses on paintings exhibited in the Joseon Mijeon (조선미술전람회 The Joseon Fine Art Exhibition) (1922-1944), which was supervised by the Japanese colonial government and dominated, in the beginning, by Japanese artists and jurors. By closely examining paintings of ‘local color (향토색)’ and ‘provincial color (지방색),’ which emphasized the essence of a “Korean” culture that accentuated its Otherness based on cultural stereotypes, the thesis explores how representations of Korea both differentiated it from Japan and characterized its relationship with the West. In order to legitimize its colonial rule, politically driven ideologies of pan-Asianism (the pursuit of a unified Asia) and Japanese Orientalism (the imperialistic perception of the rest of Asia) were evident in the state-approved arts. The thesis explores how the tension of modern Japan as both promoting an egalitarian Asia and asserting its superiority within Asia was shown in the popular images that circulated in the form of postcards, manga, magazine illustrations, and more importantly in paintings. Moreover, this project examines both the artists who actively submitted works to the Joseon Mijeon and the group of artists who opposed the Joseon Mijeon and worked outside of the state-approved system to consider the complexity of responses by artists who sought to be both modern and Korean under Japanese colonial rule. / published_or_final_version / Fine Arts / Master / Master of Philosophy

Lemos, Rodrigo de Oliveira January 2015 (has links)

A Feminist Philosophical Critique of Domestic Mediation (ADR) Practices in the United States: Realizing Mary Parker Follett's Theory of Empowerment

Sukovaty, Beckey D. 09 1900 (has links)
xi, 97 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis identifies four major problems facing the Altemative Dispute Resolution profession-especially domestic mediation-and proposes constructive solutions using ADR pioneer and feminist-pragmatist philosopher Mary Parker Follett's work. I argue these problems are grounded in a conception of persons as independent and radically autonomous, rather than interdependent and embedded in social communities. Mediators often justify professional expansion by claiming mediation is more empowering than other ADR methods. However, absent a well-developed theory of interdependence, mediation perpetuates the power of negative socioeconomic forces over clients, furthering oppression not empowerment. Central to Follett's theory is a conception of power consistent with the idea that persons are interdependent. Effective domestic mediation reform could be achieved using Follett's theory, which demonstrates how ostensibly individual matters leading to "private" conflicts are inseparable from social circumstances and public concerns. I conclude with several solutions based on this alternative conception that help rectify current ADR problems. / Adviser: Scott Pratt

The overall aim of the thesis is to realize the racial speech modes of expression in the above work and establish the network of symbolic and social relations that dialogue directly and indirectly with his stance in his first novel which deals with immigration. More specifically, we seek to: a) analyze the way Aranha presented and discussed by means of their characters topics race, progress and civilization, key terms for the Brazilian racial speech; b) Peering social place Aranha and racial theories that influenced the "theses" presented in Canaan; c) Explore the way by which the racial ideology guided the debate on the bill of Brazil and the Brazilian identity; d) To investigate the senses of European immigration process (for Aranha, German) for Brazil and the relationship between blacks and whites in the early twentieth century and the beginning of the sword republic. Methodologically, there was a documentary research that had as data collection instrument to analyze the qualitative speech, following the basic guidelines of Orladi (1988, 1992, 1993) and Foucault (2009). In conclusion, it was realized that the literary work Canaan presented a kaleidoscope of related ideas to the common discourse at the time, since the nietzscheniano superman Lentz, passing to racial references Reef School to discuss, ultimately, the national identity and how this would be affected by foreign immigration phenomenon.
