中国基督徒的身份问题一直是中国基督宗教研究领域的热点问题。做一个基督徒与做一个中国人,两种身份如何统一?怎样协调中国文化与基督教之间的张力?这是每一个中国基督徒都会面对的难题。 / 中国现代著名作家林语堂(1895-1976)以跨文化双语写作蜚声海内外,他以英文写就的《吾国吾民》、《生活的艺术》等著作畅销全世界,使其成为20 世纪享有最高国际知名度的中国现代作家。鲜为人知的是,林语堂是一个有着特殊信仰经历的基督徒。他生于闽南一个基督教家庭,父亲是长老会牧师。他从小接受基督教教育,曾就读于著名教会学校上海圣约翰大学,青年时期却宣布离基督教,自称为“异教徒,到晚年又宣布重回基督教怀抱。这既是一条追寻上帝的信仰之旅,也见证了林语堂作为一个中国基督徒对自我身份的努力寻索。 / 本文将林语堂的一生划分为六个时期,通过分析他在不同时期与基督教的关系来研究他如何面对与解决中国基督徒的身份认同问题。方法论上本文借鉴了心理学家埃里克森的身份认同理论以及当代文化研究关于文化身份的学说。研究资料除了林语堂大量的中英文作品,还包括他的信件、手稿、相关档案等第一手资料。 / 本研究发现,林语堂之离基督教是出于身份危机,在做中国人与做基督徒之间产生矛盾的情况下他选择做中国人。尽管长达三十多年以“异教徒自居,并不意味着他放弃信仰。对他笔下的“异教徒一词需审慎辨析。尽管对基督教有公开批判,林语堂并不是反基督教作家。自童年时期形成的基督教价值观一直影响着他,他从来没有停止过信仰上帝,只是出于各种原因与基督教保持距离,直到他找到适合自己的信仰方式,融合基督教与中国文化,形成具有中国人文主义色彩的基督教思想,建立起既是中国人又是基督徒的身份认同。 / The identity problem of Chinese Christians has always been a hot issue in the studies of Chinese Christianity. Chinese Christians are generally caught at the horn of a dilemma as how to unify their Chinese identity and Christian identity, and how to handle the tensions between Chinese culture and Christianity. / Lin Yutang (1895-1976), one of the most influential modern Chinese writers, was renowned for his extensive writings in both Chinese and English. His best-sellers in English, including My Country and My People and The Importance of Living, earned him highest international fame among modern Chinese writers. A less-known but momentous facet of him is his special encounter with Christianity. Lin Yutang was born into a Christian family in a poor mountain village in Southern China, his father being a Presbyterian minister in a local church. He received secondary education at Talmage College, and tertiary education at St.John’s University, both of which were missionary schools. However, Lin renounced Christianity in his twenties and claimed to be a pagan for over thirty years until declaring his return to Christianity in his sixties. Lin’s journey of faith witnessed his lifelong search for the identity as a Chinese Christian, which was constantly undergoing transformation and construction. / In addition to the general introduction and conclusion, this thesis consists of six main chapters, each of which elaborates Lin’s relationship to Christianity during the different stages of his life, focusing on the ways in which he encountered and solved the identity problem of being a Chinese Christian. This thesis adopts E.H. Erikson’s theory on identity as an overall framework, while also referring to theories on cultural identity proposed by some scholars of cultural studies like Stuart Hall. This research makes extensive use of primary materials including Lin’s letters, manuscripts, and other relevant archives apart from his published works. / According to the findings of this research, Lin renounced Christianity in the midst of his identity crisis when he was compelled to choose between being a Chinese and being a Christian. He had described himself a “pagan for more than thirty years, but it doesn’t mean that he forsook his Christian faith. Lin’s particular use of “pagan necessitates careful interpretation and scrutiny. Lin should not be regarded as an anti-Christian writer in spite of his open criticisms of Christianity. It can be seen that Christianity had always been a major contributing factor in shaping Lin’s values and morality since his childhood. In fact, Lin Yutang had never ceased in his faith in God, even though he deliberately kept some distance from Christianity until he found his own way of worshipping God. Vocal parlor songs of the Civil War by George Frederick Root

The United States Civil War continues to be an intriguing aspect of history to both scholar and layperson. In light of this broad interest, the relatively small amount of scholarly study of music created by American composers during these years is conspicuous. One of the war's significant composers, both in relationship to the composition and publication of songs in America, was George Frederick Root. Not only were Root's compositions numerous, several pieces assumed major positions in the ongoing sociopolitical musings of a nation seeking to process these turbulent years. This document explores Root's development and productivity as a Civil War era composer and publisher. It also considers his music as representative of the scores of popular compositions that reflected the spirit, artistry, politics, religion, and social processing by the people of the United States of America during one of the most defining periods of its relatively short existence.Chapter one serves as an introduction. It identifies the context, scope, methodology, and delimitation of the study.Chapter two provides a brief overview of the social and cultural climate of the country at the time of the Civil War. It identifies how various forms of artistic expression carried the war directly into private parlors and public squares. More specifically, it discusses the role of parlor songs not only as an important cultural expression for the nation, but also as a valuable commodity for composers and publishers of music such as George Frederick Root.Chapter three describes the developmental years of Root as a composer and businessman. From Willow Farm to the first Normal Music Institute, Root built a foundation of experience and skill that set the scene for a significant impact upon American culture. Influenced by musicians such as Lowell Mason, Louis Gottschalk, and Stephen Foster, his musical landscape was diverse and deeply rooted in the language of popular culture. George Root partnered with his brother Ebenezer Root and business associate Cauncey Cady at the Chicago-based publishing firm of Root and Cady to provide a production and delivery system for music that infiltrated all areas of the country.Chapter four is a collection of Root's thirty-six vocal Civil War parlor songs published by the Root and Cady Publishing Company. The songs are reproduced from the original sheet music. Each song is summarized and the entire collection is analyzed based upon musical and textual considerations.Chapter five provides a summary of this project as well as questions for further study. / School of Music

As raízes da crise ambiental : uma leitura a partir da dialética do esclarecimento

A crise ambiental é um dos fenômenos de maior impacto social da contemporaneidade, e diante de sua dimensão emergiram diversas instituições políticas e sociais com o objetivo de contornar e superar as dificuldades impostas pela problemática ambiental. Em virtude desse quadro a presente dissertação busca investigar as origens da crise ambiental a partir da matriz teórica da primeira geração da Escola de Frankfurt – especificamente a partir da obra Dialética do esclarecimento de Theodor W. Adorno e Max Horkheimer. A escolha da perspectiva da Teoria Crítica leva em consideração uma posição holista e interdisciplinar que busca, em última instância, transcender a estreita visão dos institutos do Direito Ambiental como sendo os únicos instrumentos – para além do mercado verde – de mediação da relação entre homem e natureza. Destarte, o desenvolvimento de uma perspectiva filosófica a respeito das origens da crise ambiental contribui para se tomar consciência dos reais agentes causadores da crise e, por consequência, desenvolver instrumentos mais efetivos no seu controle. Para tanto, a metodologia adotada elegeu a pesquisa qualitativa, e como procedimento a revisão bibliográfica da obra Dialética do esclarecimento; além de uma ampla gama de comentadores e pesquisadores da área ambiental e jurídica. A pesquisa confirmou a hipótese de que a origem da crise ambiental repousa em uma crise epistemológica – originária do próprio medo do homem por toda alteridade e pelo princípio da identidade, que se cristaliza como razão instrumental. Adorno and Max Horkheimer. The choice of the perspective of Critical Theory takes into account a holistic and interdisciplinary position that seeks, ultimately, to transcend the narrow views of the institutes of Environmental Law as the only instruments - in addition to the green market - to mediate the relationship between man and nature. Thus, the development of a philosophical perspective on the origins of the environmental crisis contributes to becoming aware of the real agents causing the crisis and, consequently, to develop more effective instruments in its control. For that, the adopted methodology chose the qualitative research, and as a procedure the bibliographical review of the work Dialectic of enlightenment; as well as a wide range of environmental and legal commentators and researchers. The research confirmed the hypothesis that the origin of the environmental crisis rests on an epistemological crisis - originated from man’s own fear for all otherness and the principle of identity, which crystallizes as an instrumental reason. It is in view of this that Environmental Law is re-dimensioned as an instrument that, while vital to environmental regulation, is not in itself enough to control or even eliminate the crisis; which would require a review of the very foundations of enlightened thinking.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a constituição de um discurso em torno do ideário da democracia racial brasileira no pensamento de dois autores modernistas: Menotti Del Picchia e Cassiano Ricardo. A constatação da presença de tal concepção no pensamento de autores cujas obras tiveram repercussões anteriores aos escritos de Gilberto Freyre permite aprofundar a discussão sobre o assim chamado \"mito da democracia racial\" no Brasil. Esta tese procura estudar esse ideário, evidenciando, a um só tempo, a sua difusão entre vários autores, a polissemia decorrente do uso plural da expressão democracia racial e a impossibilidade de atribuir sua origem a uma autoria específica. Por meio do cruzamento de várias formas de manifestação do pensamento dos dois autores modernistas - ou seja, da poesia e da literatura de ficção, das obras e dos discursos políticos e das artes figurativas - busca-se ampliar o estudo sobre o ideário da democracia racial no Brasil, descentrando o foco da análise da obra de Gilberto Freyre, autor mais comumente associado a essa noção de democracia racial. A investigação dos ensaios políticos em que Cassiano Ricardo e Menotti Del Picchia expressam as suas concepções sobre a formação racial brasileira visa interpretar não só o significado desse ideário na obra dos próprios autores como também o modo de inserção e de divulgação desse discurso no contexto do movimento modernista. Procura-se, assim, recuperar, até 1945, uma parcela da história da criação de uma linguagem política operante entre pensadores brasileiros. Mapeando um campo de discurso e estudando a ação e a transformação que vão se efetuando nesse conceito, busca-se associar o seu desenvolvimento às trajetórias sociobiográficas dos autores que o assumiram e divulgaram-no como uma particularidade da nacionalidade brasileira. / The present thesis analyzes the constitution of a discourse around the conception of the Brazilian racial democracy in the thought of two modernist authors: Menotti Del Picchia and Cassiano Ricardo. Such conception, found in the thought of authors whose works preceded Gilberto Freire´s studies, opened the way to a careful examination over the discussion about the so called \"myth of racial democracy\" in Brazil. This thesis embraces the study around this conception and, along with it, reveals its diffusion among several authors, the polysemy as a result of the plural use of the expression \"racial democracy\" and the impossibility to attribute its origin to any specific authorship. Through the intersection of the several ways the thoughts of these two authors became manifest - that is, by means of poetry, novels, works, political discourses and figurative arts - this thesis intends to question and enrich the study about the conception of racial democracy in Brazil. It does so by displacing the focus of the analysis on Gilberto Freire´s work, most currently author associated to the racial democracy theme. The study of the political essays in which Cassiano Ricardo e Menotti Del Picchia expressed their conceptions about the Brazilian racial constitution intends to interpret not only the meaning of this conception in the work of these two authors but also the ways the insertion and transmission of this discourse occurred within the context of modernist movement. The present thesis, thus, intends to recover part of the history concerning the creation of a current political discourse among brazilian intellectuals. Examining the components of the discourse and studying the action and transformation that have impact on the referred concept, this thesis relates the development of this concept to the sociobiographic trajectories of the authors who assumed and conveyed it as a peculiarity of Brazilian nationality.

La présente étude se fonde sur le postulat que le style de Platon dans le Phèdre entretient un lien nécessaire avec le contenu, que le style crée le contenu. Elle s’efforce de montrer que la description de ce lien suppose de prendre en compte les aspects énonciatifs de l’œuvre, c’est-à-dire à la fois la situation d’énonciation dans laquelle s’inscrit chaque réplique et la façon dont l’auteur s’adresse au lecteur. En effet, se fondant sur la notion bakhtinienne de dialogisme, elle définit la fonction du style par le fait d’orchestrer une pluralité linguistique : Platon représente différentes langues à l’intérieur du dialogue, la langue poétique, la langue technique des orateurs, ou encore la langue des philosophes qui l’ont précédé, et les met en dialogue, les confronte, créant ainsi une nouvelle conception de l’objet du dialogue, le discours d’abord, l’âme amoureuse ensuite. La situation d’énonciation révèle le travail sur le matériau linguistique et permet la mise en dialogue des différentes langues, tantôt en les distribuant entre différents personnages, qui deviennent chacun une source de sens pour les termes employés, tantôt en ajoutant au contexte immédiat dans lequel s’insère le mot un contexte large, qui demande, pour le même mot, un sens différent de celui qui est cohérent avec le contexte immédiat. En outre, certaines particularités de la situation d’énonciation remettent en cause les présupposés sur lesquels se fonde la compréhension d’un énoncé, notamment le principe de non-contradiction : ces particularités ne doivent pas être effacées, elles correspondent selon nous à l’intention de Platon et constituent des énigmes interprétatives qu’il pose au lecteur. / This study is based on the thesis that Plato’s style in the Phaedrus creates the content. The study attempts to show that in order to describe this interaction one has to take into consider the enunciative aspects of the text, that is the enunciative situation into which every phrase subscribes and the way the author addresses to the reader. In fact, based on Bakhtin’s notion of the dialogism, our work defines the function of the style by the means of orchestrating a linguistic plurality: Plato presents different languages inside the dialogue, such as the poetic language, the orators’ technic language or also the language of the philosophers who had preceded him; he makes them interact and confront between them, creating by this a new concept of the dialogue’s object, i.e. the speech and the enamoured soul. The enunciative situation reveals the work done on the linguistic material and permits to implement the dialogue between different languages either by attributing these languages to different characters, who become themselves a source of the sense for the terms employed, or by adding to the word’s immediate context a much larger context who demands, for the same word, a new sense different from the one who is coherent with the immediate context. In addition, some particularities of the enunciative situation question the assumptions on which is based the understanding of any statement, in particular, the principle of non-contradiction : according to our theory, these particularities shouldn’t be erased, they correspond to Plato’s intention and form the interpretative riddles that Plato addresses to the reader.
