Art Criticism and the Gendering of Lee Bontecou's Art, ca. 1959 - 1964

Estrada-Berg, Victoria 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis identifies and analyzes gendering in the art writing devoted to Lee Bontecou's metal and canvas sculptures made from the 1959 - 1964. Through a careful reading of reviews and articles written about Bontecou's constructions, this thesis reconstructs the context of the art world in the United States at mid-century and investigates how cultural expectations regarding gender directed the reception of Bontecou's art, beginning in 1959 and continuing through mid-1960s. Incorporating a description of the contemporaneous cultural context with description of the constructions and an analysis of examples of primary writing, the thesis chronologically follows the evolution of a tendency in art writing to associate gender-specific motivation and interpretation to one recurring feature of Bontecou's works.

With the aim of providing research material able to help future translators of vocal works, this paper is an interdisciplinary study that brings together theoretical linguistics and music, in order to define and develop, through a case analysis, tools to assist the translation process of vocal works. Starting from principle that text and music are inseparable sound phenomena, in this work we resort to the theory of melopoetics as the connecting line for this creative process. With this line of work that deals specifically with the issues that permeates music and text the tools we have chosen have close relation with these aspects. Metric, rhythmic accentuation, prosody, internal and external rhymes, and processes of union and separation of words in music, are the elements that have been discussed here, in a research that, in its core, promotes the intercommunication between music and language. The thesis has an introductory chapter, with a discussion of bibliography of current and classic authors in the area of translation, specifically poetic translation. Also included in the introduction is the line of thought in which we will develop our analysis: melopoetics. The tools that will be defended and used as a parameters in the analysis of the case study are stated in the first chapter, while the second chapter analyses Arnold Schoenberg's work Pierrot Lunaire, translated by Brazilian author Augusto de Campos, with the participation of the conductor and singer Edmar Ferreti, key figure in this translation process / Doutorado / Praticas Interpretativas / Doutora em Música

Abstract: This work has for objective to analyze the paper of the govrnors in the Brazilian federalism at two caracteristicamente distinct moments of history Brazilian politics: the first one marked for a weakness of the Federal Govermnent that did not obtain to implement a given agenda of performance the low degree of parliamentary cohesion in favor of the Govermnent. Commotio: Carl Nielsen's Symphony for Organ: A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of F. Couperin, J.S. Bach, P. Hindemith, M. Duruflé, S. Raisin, D. Buxtehude, M. Reger, F. Martin, M. Weckmann, F. Tunder, V. Lübeck, C.P.E. Bach, and L. Vierne

Morrison, Linda Sue 08 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given on March 25, 1984. Commotio by Carl Nielsen was performed following a lecture on that particular organ composition. The lecture included a discussion of Carl Nielsen, characteristics of his six symphonies, a detailed analysis of Commotio, and the symphonic characteristics found in Commotio. Some examples from the symphonies as well as other works were performed during the lecture to illustrate the similarities between Commotio and his orchestral works. In addition to the lecture recital, three other public recitals were performed, all of which consisted of solo compositions for the organ. The first solo recital, including works of Couperin, Bach, Hindemith, and Duruflé, was performed on October 30, 1980. On May 6, 1981, the second solo recital was performed. Compositions by Raison, Buxtehude, Bach, Reger, and Martin were included in the program. The third solo recital which included works by Weckmann, Tunder, Lübeck, C. P. E. Bach, and Vierne, was performed on April 25, 1983. The four programs were recorded on magnetic tape and are filed with the written version of the lecture material as a part of the dissertation.

Doctorow's Ragtime journalism

Graham, Robert Haise 01 January 1978 (has links)
Doctorow has a curiously complex problem in Ragtime. He wants to say something meaningful, to arrive at some truth about the ragtime era of America; he wants to reveal the essence of the people of that eram who and what affected them, whom and what they affected. But the facts alone cannot solve Doctorow's program. They will provide only locatable, accountable, recorded deeds. Art, by itself, cannot solve the problem either, since the problem is too bound up in history. The problem of Ragtime, then, is to conjoin somehow the accountable facts and the unrecorded effects those facts might have had. Ragtime needs to show how the historical figures of the early twentieth century and their philosophies affected unnamed families and caused much social unrest and change. Doctorow's solutions is what might be called ragtime journalism. The new journalism attempted to create realistic novels that convinced us of their factual veracity by using real people and scenes to present an authentic recreation of reality. But Doctorow uses real people and scenes to create an unauthentic reality, to create a very obvious fiction.3.

The collective voice: the novels of Tchicaya u Tam'si.

O'Grady, Betty January 1992 (has links)
A Dissertation Presented to the Department of African Literature University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg In Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy / This two part study of Tchicaya U Tam'Si's novels reflects the twin objectives of the research project. By showing in the first part the need for critical criteria founded in the socio-historical and linguistic realities of Africa, the hegemony of the Western aesthetic canon with respect to African writing is challenged. In the second part, by applying a contextualised, syncretic critical approach to U Tam'Si's prose works, important features not only of his narrative but also of his poetic discourse are illuminated. This movement from broad questions of theory to focus on a specific body of writing makes it possible to identify elements that may be considered characteristic of African writing in general while at the same time contributing to a better understanding of a particular writer's creative expression.
