[en] USING LINEAR AND NON-LINEAR APPROACHES TO MODEL THE BRAZILIAN ELECTRICITY SPOT PRICE SERIES / [pt] MODELOS LINEARES E NÃO LINEARES NA MODELAGEM DO PREÇO SPOT DE ENERGIA ELÉTRICA DO BRASIL

LUIZ FELIPE MOREIRA DO AMARAL 17 July 2003 (has links)
[en] In this dissertation, modeling strategies are presented involving linear and non-linear time series models to model the spot price of Brazil s electrical energy market. It has been used, among the linear models, the modeling approach of Box, Jenkins and Reinsel (1994) i.e., ARIMA(p,d,q) models, and dynamic regression. Among the non-linear ones, the chosen model was the STAR developed, initially, by Chan and Tong (1986) and, later, by Teräsvirta (1994). For this model, the Lagrange Multipliers test, to measure the degree of non linearity of the series , as well as to evaluate the estimated model was used. Moreover, it was also used a proposal for the initial values of the optimization algorithm, developed by Franses and Dijk (2000). The smoothed Kalman filter estimates were used in order to provide values for the spot price series during the energy shortage period.

Também são importantes para a compreensão dos mecanismos de produção de estranheza em diferentes energias / Abstract: Relativistic heavy-ion collisions allow us to study the behavior of nuclear matter at extreme conditions of temperature and energy density. In these conditions, we expect a phase transition of matter where a free state of quarks and gluons would be formed, and that is known as Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). With the aim to study this new state of matter and its features, the STAR experiment was built at BNL (Brookhaven National Laboratory), New York. The STAR experiment measures many observables of heavy-ion collisions and in particular, the strangeness enhancement in QGP is of special interest. The aim of this work was the study of multi-strange baryon production, X and W , at collisions of Cu+Cu in the center of mass energy of 62.4 GeV=A measured at the STAR experiment. Transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields for X and W at mid-rapidity are presented in this work. We also compared Cu+Cu and Au+Au systems in order to study the dependence of strange particle production with the system size. The results showed that strangeness production enhances with the system size, and strange baryons yields in Cu+Cu are slightly larger than Au+Au for the same energy. The new results obtained here complement a systematic study of strangeness production in heavy ion collisions and are important to understand the strangeness particle production mechanism in different energies / Mestrado / Física Nuclear / Mestre em Física

Star-exponential of normal j-groups and adapted Fourier transform

Spinnler, Florian 23 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis provides the explicit expression of the star-exponential for the action of normal j-groups on their coadjoint orbits, and of the so-called modified star-exponential defined by Gayral et al. Using this modified star-exponential as the kernel of a functional transform between the group and its coadjoint orbits yields an adapted Fourier transform which is also detailed here. The normal j-groups arise in the work of Pytatetskii-Shapiro, who established the one-to-one correspondence with homogeneous bounded domains of the complex space; these groups are also the central element of the deformation formula recently developed by Bieliavsky & Gayral (a non abelian analog of the strict deformation quantization theory of Rieffel). Since these groups are exponential, the results given in this text illustrate the general work of Arnal & Cortet on the star-representations of exponential groups.
As this work is meant to be as self-contained as possible, the first chapter reproduces many definitions introduced by Bieliavsky & Gayral, in order to obtain the expression of the symplectic symmetric space structure on normal j-groups, and of their unitary irreducible representations. The Weyl-type quantizer associated to this symmetric structure is then computed, thus yielding the Weyl quantization map for which the composition of symbols is precisely the deformed product defined by Bieliavsky-Gayral on normal j-groups. A detailed proof of the structure theorem of normal j-groups is also provided.
The second chapter focuses on the expression and properties of the star-exponential itself, and exhibits a useful tool for the computation, namely the resolution of the identity associated to square integrable unitary irreducible representations of the groups. The result thus obtained satisfies the usual integro-differential equation defining the star-exponential. A criterion for the existence of a tempered pair underlying a given tempered structure on Lie groups is proven; the star-exponential functions are also shown to belong to the multiplier algebra of the Schwartz space associated to the tempered structure. Before that, it is shown that all Schwartz spaces that appear in this work are isomorphic as topological vector spaces.
The modified version of this star-exponential is computed in chapter three, first for elementary normal j-groups and then for normal j-groups. It is then used to define an adapted Fourier transform between the group and the dual of its Lie algebra. This transform generalizes (to all normal j-groups) a Fourier transform that was already studied in the “ax+b” case by Gayral et al. (2008), as well as by Ali et al. (2003) in the context of wavelet transforms. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

We present an overview of the current and future adaptive optics systems at the LBTO along with the current and planned science instruments they feed. All the AO systems make use of the two 672 actuator adaptive secondary mirrors. They are (1) FLAO (NGS/SCAO) feeding the LUCI NIR imagers/spectrographs; (2) LBTI/AO (NGS/SCAO) feeding the NIR/MIR imagers and LBTI beam combiner; (3) the ARGOS LGS GLAO system feeding LUCIs; and (4) LINO-NIRVANA - an NGS/MCAO imager and interferometer system. AO performance of the current systems is presented along with proposed performances for the newer systems taking into account the future instrumentation.

Changes in Organization Design Produced by Covid-19 from a Path-Dependence Perspective : A Case Study of a Medical Manufacturing Company / Förändringar av organisationsdesign efter Covid-19 ur ett stigberoende perspektiv : En fallstudie av ett medicintekniskt tillverkningsföretag

Artavia Muñoz, Carolina January 2023 (has links)
Covid-19 brought various challenges that the world that was not fully prepared to face since 2019. The pandemic came with both health and economic repercussions, and various organizations had to adapt their Organization Design to confront these new challenges posed by this Black Swan event. Since the pandemic is still recent, most of the research related to Organization Design and Covid-19 has focused on the changes during the pandemic. What has been missing in the research is a perspective on the evolution of Organization Design over time. Two research questions were addressed. The first question explored how individuals from different positions perceived changes in Organization Design during the pandemic using Jay Galbraith's Star Model. The findings revealed variations in perceptions across positions, particularly regarding hiring growth, structure, communication, rewards, and the hiring process. The second research question uses a combination of Path Dependence Theory and Jay Galbraith's Star Model to compare the short-term and long-term effects of contingencies on Organization Design within a Medical Manufacturing Company. Some changes, like temporary Covid-19 protocols and rewards, were phased out, while others, including remote work, digital transformation, hybrid work models, and certain structural changes, became permanent. The thesis contributes to the understanding of how Black Swan events impact Organization Design in the Medical Manufacturing Industry, providing practical recommendations for decision-making during crises and emphasizing the significance of organizational resilience and change management. The study's theoretical contributions include exploring path dependence in crisis-induced transformations, highlighting the dynamic nature of organizational responses, and suggesting future research avenues. Overall, this research enhances knowledge of Organization Design dynamics and offers guidance for organizations in crisis response and resilience-building.

Analysis of flow through cylindrical packed beds with small cylinder diameter to particle diameter ratios / Wian Johannes Stephanus van der Merwe

Van der Merwe, Wian Johannes Stephanus January 2014 (has links)
The wall effect is known to present difficulties when attempting to predict the pressure drop over randomly packed beds. The Nuclear Safety Standard Commission, “Kerntechnischer Auss-chuss" (KTA), made considerable efforts to develop an equation which predicts the pressure drop over cylindrical randomly packed beds consisting of mono-sized spheres. The KTA was able to estimate a limiting line, which defines the region for which the wall effect is negligible, however the theoretical basis for this line is unclear. The goal of this investigation was to determine the validity of the KTA limiting line, using an explicit approach. Packed beds were generated using Discrete Element Modelling (DEM), and the flow through the beds simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). STAR-CCM+R was used for both DEM and CFD operations, and the methods developed for this explicit approach were validated with empirical data. The KTA correlation predictions for friction factors were com- pared with the CFD results, as well as the predictions from a few other correlations. The KTA correlation predictions for friction factors did not correspond well with the CFD results at low aspect ratios and low modified Reynolds numbers, due to the influence of the wall effect. The KTA limiting line was found to be valid, but not exact. A new limiting line for the KTA correlation was suggested, however the new limiting line improved little on the existing line and was the result of some major assumptions. In order to improve the determination of the position of the KTA limiting line further, criteria need to be established which determine how small the error in predicted friction factor must be before the KTA correlation can be accepted as accurate. / MIng (Nuclear Engineering), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
