Embler, Ylva January 2019 (has links)
The word that disappeared - A scientific essay on the child-rearing responsibilities and practical professional knowledge of preschool educators This scientific essay examines how child-rearing tasks of the preschool educator relates to their practical knowledge from a hermeneutical perspective considered in the light of Hannah Arendt's concept of responsibility. The study consists of six subject narratives and an ethno-logical field study carried out at two preschools. Participatory observations and interviews were used as a method. Explored here is how professional responsibility, regulated in the preschool's governing documents, balances out against interpersonal responsibility in an activity where children spend most of their wakening hours and where attention is given to various factors such as the need for freedom, organisation and security. Examined too is how rules, companion education, self-regulation, leadership, adult authority and the application of governing documents weigh up against the concepts of children's' participation, influence and power. The concept of rearing in preschool is a controversial one: This may be due perhaps to connotations of rigid rules and nagging adults, but also that activities of the last decade have developed towards more school-based learning. Preschool teaching contains so much more however. In the daily workings of the enterprise security is established, while children are also learning to deal with materials and environments, learning to take on their own responsibility—exercising independence on a gradual basis. Alongside free play and creative activities, rearing therefore forms a vital element of children's non-cognitive learning that even affects interaction and communication. A concept that has been a part of the preschool world for over a century rearing has now been removed from the preschool curriculum.  Results demonstrate that the task of child-rearing is an element presupposed in a teachers’ practical knowledge. Based on a complex number of variables, children’s best interests are constantly considered. An unspoken gap sometimes arises between the professional’s responsibility and the interpersonal responsibility that they require to bridge the gap. This becomes particularly evident when children require the response of adults with whom they feel secure. In this manner child-rearing activities, previously seen as solely the parents concern, now also fall upon the educator, even if this remains unsaid. It is therefore assumed that the work of child-rearing will remain in preschools even if the word itself disappears. Responsibility, content and praxis, in the question of child-rearing therefore needs to be discussed and highlighted together with parenting to maintain a socially sustainable future.

Social science theatchers thoughts on societals concept in social studies. : A study in the focus group interview method of nine professional social sciense teatchers in two different upper secondary schools.

Andersson, Jemima January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how social science teachers perceive and express the concept of society in social studies. The study consists of focus group interviews with nine social science teachers at two upper secondary schools and its results are analyzed against the theoretical backdrop of Odenstad's orientation topics, analytical subjects and discussion topics and Sandahl’s first-order and second-order concepts. In short, the two different conceptual devices can be described as the skills and abilities that are most important for the students to master in order to develop advanced thinking skills in social science. Particular emphasis is put on critical thinking, that is, the ability to seek, structure and evaluate information from different sources and to draw conclusions from this process. The emerging results show a certain consensus on the concept of society among social science teachers as the potential subject of study and analysis that would simplify and clarify the analyses of the different levels in society which, in turn, would contribute to adding significance and bringing cohesion to the subject as a whole. As for the skills and abilities that stem from Odenstad's orientation topics and Sandahl’s first-order concepts, the interviewed teachers all emphasize conceptual ability as well as good external knowledge to have knowledge of how society is made up. With reference to Odenstad's analytical subject and discussion topics and Sandahl's second-order concepts, it would seem that it is not only important but a prerequisite that students develop an analytical ability and critical thinking as well as the ability to sift through and process large amounts of information and assume different perspectives on the topic or issue at hand.

Count on the brain

Fluid intelligence (FI) is a strong predictor of mathematical performance. However, the impact of FI on cognitive processes and neural mechanisms underlying differences in mathematical abilities across different subdivisions is not well understood. The present work specifies FI-related differences in these processes and mechanisms for students solving geometric, arithmetic, and algebraic problems. We chose a multi-methodological approach to shed light on the interplay between FI, performance, and factors such as task complexity, learning, and strategy selection that influence cognitive processes and task demands in problem-solving. We measured response times and error rates to evaluate performance, eye movements to identify solution strategies, and the event-related (de-)synchronization (ERD/ERS) in the broad alpha band as indicator of general cortical activity. Further, we considered the ERD/ERS in the theta band and the alpha sub-bands to distinguish between associated cognitive processes. For unfamiliar geometric analogy tasks, students with high FI built relational representations based on a more intense processing of spatial information. Strategy analyses revealed a more adaptive strategy choice in response to increasing task demands compared to students with average FI. Further, we conducted the first study identifying strategies and related cortical activity trial-wise and thereby identified FI-related differences in the neural efficiency of strategy execution. For solving familiar arithmetic and algebraic problems, high compared to average FI was associated with lower demands on the updating of numbers leading to a better performance in complex tasks. Further analyses suggest that students with high FI had an advantage to identify the relational structure of the problems and to retrieve routines that match this structure. Thus, the ability to build relational representations might be one key aspect explaining FI-related difference in mathematical abilities.

The specific disorder of arithmetical skills

Hein, Jakob 30 October 2000 (has links)
The Specific disorder of arithmetical skills is defined as an individual's unability to acquire arithmetical skills in spite of normal intelligence and adequate mathematical education. There is a considerable lack of data on the condition. The present study attempts to collect epidemiological as well as clinical and neuropsychological data. In a first step, randomly chosen 182 third-graders of a city population were screened for a suspected Specific disorder of arithmetical skills, defined by a significantly worse mathematics compared to spelling achievement. We found the prevalence of the condition to be 6.59 % (n=12). In the second step we attempted to validate the suspected Specific disorder of arithmetical skills with a thorough clinico-neurological and neuropsychological test battery. Only five of the parents of the twelve probands agreed to further testing. Of those five, four showed below-average performances in at least one area of mathematical abilities. However, only one proband met the diagnostic criteria for the condition of the ICD-10. The study compares our data with those of another study by our group of a rural population sample. Due to temporal differences and different screening instruments, the screening test results are quite dissimilar, yet the prevalence rate for the condition is equal in both studies. Considering a review of the literature on the field as well as our own data the diagnosis of the Specific disorder of arithmetical skills is discussed. It is concluded that it has validity as a medical condition, but that is currently ill-defined. Diagnostic criteria employing qualitative aspects of the condition rather than quantitative discrepancies in standardized tests are proposed. An universal terminology of the condition is suggested and the need for further research emphasized.

Currently, the theory recognized as the most extensive to explain the mental functioning is the C-H-C (Cattell-Horn-Carroll). Among the tests internationally availables, the only one that meets this proposal is the theoretical battery Woodcock Johnson III (WJ - IIII). Accordingly, the objective of this study was to verify the convergence validity battery of Cognitives Abilities Woodcock-Johnson III, comparing it with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - WISC-III, already validated for our reality. The sample was composed of 30 students from public school of Primary and Secondary Education, being 15 men and 15 women aged between 13 and 15 years. It was applied to the participants, with parents permission, the two sets of Cognitive Abilities WJ-III and WISC-III. The results were analyzed according to the Pearson correlation and it was performed the Analysis of Variance between gender and age for each instrument. The results pointed to a significant correlation between the total score of Woodcock and the total score in the WISC of 0,865, between Woodcock and the scale implementation 0,766 and the scale verbal 0,843. As for the Analysis of Variance, in the instrument WISC-III there was no significant difference in age and in subtestes Complete Figures and Cubes Sex x Age to the subtest vocabulary. In addition, for the instrument WJ-III there were differences of Sex X Age only for subtest Verbal Understanding. The Battery Woodcock Johnson III is considered the most complete in order to allow the evaluation of different differents cognitive abilities of the model C-HC, and therefore, according to the presents results, the battery WJ-III can be used in Brazil to replace the WISC - III.

This study aimed at analyzing the school trajectory of a hearing student, who: is bilingual with high abilities/giftedness (HA/G); has a deaf mother; lives in a familiar context, in which five languages are involved: Ukrainian, Polish, German, English, and Libras. The research question that guided this study was: what are the implications that this multilingual context, as well as the HA/G may have on the participant's schooling? The participant's school trajectory analyzed encompassed the period from 1st to 9th year of the elementary school, at which the participant’s age varied from six to fourteen years old. The study was conducted in two schools located in countryside of Paraná, where the participant resided with his parents and maternal grandparents. The data were collected through interviews with teachers, psychologists, principals, pedagogical staff, family members and the participant himself. Extra data from other studies (STREIECHEN, 2014) were also used in order to discuss the participant’s linguistic and school issues. This is a qualitative study, ethnographic in nature, supported by a case study. The Discursive Textual Analysis (MORAES; GALIAZZI, 2016) was the methodological framework adopted to analyze data in this study, considering that such framework allows the researcher to interpret the data further, with the commitment to generate new theories and/or assumptions. Psychoanalysis was the theory adopted to support data analysis, since this approach points out concepts of interest for comprehending the relationship between teacher and student, to cite: the importance of student's speech and desire to acquire knowledge, as well as of teacher's most attentive listening to become acquainted with a student in his/her amplitude. Results indicated, among other aspects, that: the participant's learning challenges, in the initial school years, were not related to the HA/G, since teachers did not identify such abilities; the participant's peculiar written style was not associated with his multilingual context and/or with the HA/G, but considered as erroneous, once the teachers were not acquainted with the languages experienced by the participant; the teachers' priority relied on the participant's difficulties rather than his abilities. The aspects aforementioned suggested that the participant' struggles intensified more and more, leading him to develop an antipathy for the school and a total indifference for studying. The conclusions pointed to the difficulty that some teachers encounter when they have to work with students with peculiar learning conditions. Such teachers, due to their traditionalist and secular strategies, are unable to listen and become acquainted with their students, disregarding their lives beyond the school walls. Therefore, the thesis of this study is that, because they do not carry the stereotype of disability, both students with HA/G and children of deaf parents become invisible in the eyes of many educators, being isolated and doomed to failure. This study highlights that these students should receive special attention in the scholar environment, so that they are not excluded from an effective teaching and learning process.
