ESTUDO DAS HABILIDADES AUDITIVAS DE CRIANÇAS COM RESPIRAÇÃO ORAL / STUDY OF THE HEARING ABILITIES OF CHILDREN WITH MOUTH BREATHINGCorrea, Bruna Machado 03 March 2010 (has links)
This study aimed at comparing verifying the auditory nervous system maturation and analysis of the auditory abilities of temporal resolution (recognition of frequency patterns, temporal order and naming), binaural separation and integration, divided attention, auditory memory and auditory closure. Analyses of the tests, comparing their results have also been carried out, in school age children, with and without mouth breathing from behavioral tests of the Auditory Processing as well as to develop a possible correlation between the groups. The sample was composed by 102 school children, aged between 8 and 12 years old. Group I was composed of 52 children with phonoaudiological diagnosis of mouth breathing and group II was composed of 50 children with nasal breathing. The evaluation of the abilities from the auditory processing was carried out using Filtered Speech tests (FS), Pitch Pattern Sequence (PPS) and alternating Staggered Spondaic Word (SSW). Results from the auditory processing tests were analyzed according to gender (female and male) and age range. In the article I the groups were divide into under 10 years old (groups I-a and II-a) and above 10 years old (groups I-b and II-b). In the article II the auditory processing tests results were analyzed according to the type of altered ability and its occurrence in children with mouth breathing. An analysis on the possible correlation between the FF test, TPF and SSW as well as the occurrence of the most frequent changes between them was performed. The performance on the tests of auditory processing was associated to the type of breathing and may have delayed auditory abilities maturation. The occurrence of auditory processing alterations is higher among the male individuals. This study contributes to highlight the importance of taking maturation into account in obtaining an accurate audiological diagnose in children with mouth breathing.

RECONHECIMENTO DE SENTENÇAS COM DIFERENTES VELOCIDADES DE FALA EM IDOSOS / SENTENCES RECOGNITION WITH DIFFERENT SPEECH SPEEDS IN OLDER PEOPLELessa, Alexandre Hundertmarck 01 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / PURPOSE: to propose a version of the Portuguese Sentences Lists test with slowed speech
speed; to verify the naturalness, clarity and applicability of the new material; to evaluate the
change in the recognition performance in adults and elderly with the variation of the speech s
speed; to verify hearing loss and speed of the verbal stimulus presentation variables on the
speech recognition in the elderly. METHODS: was realized elongation of 25% compared to
the original duration of the Portuguese Sentences Lists test. Adults and elderly normalhearing
did a perceptual analysis of the produced material. After this, the adults had obtained
their Slowed Sentences Recognition Thresholds in Quiet, Slowed Sentences Recognition
Indices in Quiet and Sentences Recognition Indices in Quiet. The data were subjected to
statistical analysis. Both normal-hearing elderly, than elderly people with hearing loss were
subjected to these same evaluations, and have also been submitted to obtain their
Sentences Recognition Indices in Noise, Slowed Sentences Recognition Indices in Noise.
The data were statistically analyzed and compared. RESULTS: the modified material was
recorded on Compact Disc. After its presentation to adults and elderly normal-hearing, which
performed the perceptual analysis of the test, it was considered clear and natural. The
evaluations, through the Portuguese Sentences Lists and Portuguese Slowed Sentences
Lists tests, showed that an improvement was observed with the presentation of the slowed
stimuli in relation to the presentation at typical speed in the group of adults to the
measurements obtained in silence, but without statistical significance. As for as the groups of
elderly normal-hearing and older people with hearing loss, was also observed an
improvement in slowed sentences recognition, but with a statistically significant difference.
Regarding the noise assessments carried out with the elderly, was obtained statistically
significant improvement in the presentation of the sentences at a slowed speed in the group
with hearing loss, but not in the elderly normal-hearing one. CONCLUSION: the modified
material, named Portuguese Slowed Sentences Lists test, proved applicability and sensibility
to investigate the temporal aspects influence in speech recognition in the older people. The
elderly demonstrated more ease to understand the spoken message, when it was presented
with slowed speed. The findings of this research shows that the elderly, independent of the
peripheral hearing, have best benefit on the speech recognition, when the heard message is
slower in the silence. Considering the speech in noise, have been shown evidence that older
adults with hearing loss had more benefit when the speech is slowed than those with normal
hearing.
Adultos e idosos normo-ouvintes
fizeram uma análise perceptivo-auditiva do material produzido. Após, o grupo de adultos teve seus
Limiares de Reconhecimento de Sentenças Lentificadas no Silêncio, Índices Percentuais de
Reconhecimento de Sentenças Lentificadas no Silêncio e Índices Percentuais de Reconhecimento de
Sentenças no Silêncio obtidos.
Sentenças no Ruído.

MATURAÇÃO DA VIA AUDITIVA E AQUISIÇÃO DA LINGUAGEM EM CRIANÇAS NASCIDAS PRÉ-TERMO TARDIO E A TERMO COM E SEM RISCO PSÍQUICO / AUDITORY PATHWAY MATURITION AND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN CHILDREN BORN LATE PRETERM AND TERM WITH AND WITHOUT PSYCHIC RISKRechia, Inaê Costa 05 August 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis aimed to evaluate the possible relationship between maturation of the auditory
pathway, language acquisition and the presence of psychological risk in preterm infants and
term. It was also analyzed the possible relationship between maturation of the auditory
pathway and language acquisition in late preterm infants and term to describe auditory
pathway maturation patterns of these babies, analyze the possible relationship between
maturation of the auditory pathway and psychological risk. This is a cohort study, longitudinal,
in which linked variables were compared to hearing and language of 0-12 babies. The
research population was composed of late preterm infants and term without neurological
injury or obvious organic syndrome. The sample consisted of 54 babies, being 17 babies
from the late preterm group and 37 babies from the group born at term from the study 2, and
31 babies composed the no risk group and 23 babies with psychic risk from study 3. The
families went through initial and continuing interviews to collect data on pregnancy, birth,
food, among others. Hearing maturation was assessed by analysis of Cortical Auditory
Evoked Potentials in the first, sixth and twelfth month. The gathering sessions were filmed at
3, 6, 9 and 12 months for analysis and checking of some of the protocols used. To verify the
psychological risk, evaluations were conducted using IRDIS and PRÈAUT questiionnaries.
To verify the language acquisition, evaluations used Language Acquisition Enunciation Sign,
DENVER II and Vocabulary Checklist. All aspects were evaluated on the day of collection
and subsequently confirmed by the filming. Analyzing the evaluations, it was found that in all
groups there was a statistically significant hearing maturation. Preterm babies showed
greater maturity than those born at term, due to its higher latency at birth and at 6 months. In
the evaluation of 12 months, it was observed equivalent results. As for the language, it was
observed that late preterm infants had lower performance in DENVER II in Phase 4.
Regarding the Language Acquisition Enunciation Sign, which evaluates the mother-infant
interaction, in Phase 1 there wasn't statistically significant difference between the groups in
favor of the group born at term as expected. As for the test Vocabulary Checklist, it was
observed that the term infants showed better understanding of vocabulary at 12 months.
Analyzing the auditory maturation and psychological risk, infants with greater psychological
risk also had higher latencies. In this sample, there was a higher concentration of risk with
babies in Phase I of IRDlS (42.59%, n = 23) and lower concentrations in Phase IV (14.81%,
n = 8). In assessing the PRÈAUT at 4 months, 42.59% (n = 23) of the babies were at risk and
9 months only 20.37% (n = 11). Finally, there is the importance for clinical practice, the
auditory maturation of monitoring and the development of listening skills of children who
show biohazardous and / or environmental risk, such as prematurity, especially extreme
cases, as well as the psychic risk.
prematuros e a termo.
Auditivos Corticais no primeiro, sexto e décimo segundo mês.
Analisando as

Previous issue date: 2011-02-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Our objective was to evaluate in young adult women and men the
consequences of moderate ethanol intake on the perception of the musical notes D, F,
and A. Blood alcohol concentrations were measured with a breathalyzer apparatus. The
study included 20 men and 20 women 18-30 years old. These were not musicians, not
drug users, or consumers of other toxic substances, they were healthy, moderate
drinkers of alcohol and had no personal or family history of drug abuse. The same
volunteers were tested under two conditions: experimental, with ethanol ingestion, and
control, with a placebo drink ingestion. In both conditions, drinks were diluted with
passion fruit juice at a ratio of 1:3. The amount of ingested alcohol for each participant
was calculated based on previous studies, taking into account age, weight, percent H2O
body weight and height. The musical notes were randomly presented to each participant
in three blocks of 20 pairs of stimuli, one block for each note used as test stimulus. The
task of each participant was to discriminate the test stimulus from one (of two possible)
distracters. Prior to each experimental session the test stimulus was presented five
consecutive times. Correct responses were grouped by gender and a 2x2 X2 test for
independent samples was used for the two conditions: alcohol ingestion (ingestion and
no ingestion) and gender of participants (women and men), for each of the three musical
notes. Adherence X2 tests were also used to assess to these variables individually. It
found significant differences on the musical note F for comparisons between men and
women without ethanol ingestion and between experimental and control conditions for
men. It found too significant differences between men and women after drinking
alcohol and in women before and after ingestion, on the musical note D. Without
distinction of sex of the participants were found significant differences in all the musical
notes used. Thus, the results found suggest that ingestion of ethanol alters the perception
of musical notes and differently between women and men.

This study aimed to investigate how Southern Brazilian EFL learners perceive, in terms of distinctions in place of articulation, the English unreleased voiceless stops in word-final position. Seventeen undergraduate students of English from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul participated in this research study. The participants took the Oxford Placement Test (Allan, 2004), which grouped them in two levels of proficiency (basic and intermediate). In order to determine the perceptual accuracy regarding the place of articulation of the three consonants, two perception tasks were applied: (a) a perceptual identification task, containing 81 questions, and (b) a categorical discrimination task, following the ABX pattern (Liberman et al., 1957), with 135 questions. The words which served as auditory stimuli in both tasks were selected to meet the CVC syllabic structure and were equidistributed according to the vowels [], [], and [], as in ―beat”, “bit”, “bat”. The stimuli were recorded by three male native speakers of American English. In order to check whether explicit instruction regarding wordfinal consonant unrelease would play a role in the perception of the consonants‘ places of articulation, the participants were divided into two groups: (a) an experimental group, which has been instructed on the phenomenon, composed by 10 students; and (b) a control group, which refers to 7 students who were not instructed on the phonetic aspect researched. The tasks were conducted in the Language Laboratory of the university and took the participants around 25 minutes to be done. The results are the following: (a) the labial and velar places of articulation had higher levels of accuracy; (b) the nuclear vowels [] and [] are the ones that optimize the perception of the consonants‘ place of articulation; (c) the experimental group showed higher levels of accuracy, when compared to the control group; and (d) intermediate students show higher levels of accuracy in the perception tasks, when compared to the basic students.

Avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo em crianças aos cinco anos de idade / BEHAVIORAL AUDITORY PROCESSING ASSESSMENT IN FIVE-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN.Santos, Fabíola Andréa Andrade dos 26 July 2012 (has links)
It is increasing number of children who presents deaf behaviors even though their hearing level is into the normal range. These behaviors characterize symptom of the Auditory Processing Disorder which may affect speech and learning development. So it is important the early identification of changes in the auditory processing, especially at preschool age, in order to eliminate and minimize future impairments. Purpose: to describe the auditory processing characteristics of a cohort of five-year-old children. Materials and Methods: a cross-sectional clinic quantitative and exploratory survey carried out with 305 children at the age of five, who are part of a 2005 birth cohort. Behavior and socioeconomic aspects and background history of diseases were searched as well as previous pregnancies and health conditions developed during pregnancy, completion of prenatal, data collection regarding delivery and birth. The evaluation was made in private and public schools through special tests: Sound Localization (SL), Non Verbal Sequential Memory (NVSM), Verbal Sequential Memory (VSM) and Cochlear Palpebral Reflex (CPR). The Chi-square test and Pearson s correlation coefficient were selected for results and risk factors analysis and correlation. Results: While 97% of the children passed in the SL test and 60.4% in the VSM test, 85.5% failed in the NVSM test. Concerning CPR, presence was observed in 99.7% of the sample and no significant difference was verified. Furthermore, no crucial difference was perceived in the results of the tests applied in the sexes and in the schools part of the study. In the quantitative analysis of correct answers, only 11.8% had right answers in all the four tests, however, there was no significant difference. Statistically significant correlation was found between the SL test and the 1st minute Apgar risk factors (p=0.09) and Cephalic Perimeter (p=0.018). Correlation was also observed with the following tests: NVSM and the variable government assistance (p=0.046), and poverty index (p=0.003) and VSM for the variable government assistance (p=0.00) and poverty income (p=0.003). In addition, statistically significant correlation between mother s education and the NVSM (p=0.019) and VSM (p=0.000) tests were found. Conclusion: It was verify a large prevalence of the alteration on auditory behavior on this sample; the adequate Cochlear Palpebral Reflex (CPR) and sound localization were present and Non Verbal Sequential Memory and Verbal Sequential Memory were changed in a significant number of children; the inappropriate conditions of pregnancy and childbirth contributed in improvement of alteration in sound localization. Lower socioeconomic conditions and low maternal education cause negatively influence on development on non-verbal sequential memory and verbal sequential memory skills.

Variação no desempenho auditivo em crianças com transtorno fonológico e do processamento auditivo após programa de estimulação / Variation in auditory performance in children with phonological and auditory processing disorders after stimulation programNadia Vilela 19 August 2011 (has links)
The auditory training has been being an important tool to stimulate individuals with (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder ((C)APD). Moreover, the presence of (C)APD in children with phonological disorders is not uncommon. PURPOSE: The development of an auditory stimulation program, and the comparison of the performance in behavioral tests of (central) auditory processing ((C)AP) in children with phonological disorders who have undergone formal and informal auditory training. METHODS: A program of auditory stimulation was developed in order to obtain controlled material for informal auditory training. Fifteen subjects with phonological disorder ( 20 dB HL tone thresholds at frequencies from 0.50 to 4 kHz and age between 7:0 and 10:11 years) were evaluated through the Figure Identification test with ipsilateral competitive noise, Dichotic Digits test, Pitch Pattern Sequence and Duration Pattern Sequence test, forming three groups: The Control Group (C group) consisting of five subjects (average 9.1 years) with alteration in only one behavioral test of the (C)AP; the Formal Auditory Training Group (FT group) with five subjects (average 8.3 years) with alteration in at least two (C)AP tests; and the Informal Auditory Training Group (IT group), with five subjects (average 8.1 years) with alteration in at least two tests. All participants were assessed for degree of severity of phonological disorders and conducted two evaluations of the (C)PA at intervals of six to eight weeks without receiving any therapy. After the second evaluation of the (C)AP, the children of the FT group underwent eight formal auditory training sessions and the children of the IT group received eight sessions of informal auditory training. After the FT and IT, the children have been re-evaluated on the (C)AP. RESULTS: The severity of phonological disorder was different between the control group and the FT and IT groups (p=0,007). After eight sessions of IT there was an improvement in all tests, except for the Dichotic Digits test in the right ear. Between the first and the third evaluation of (C)AP, a statistical difference was observed in the IT group for the figure identification test in the right and left ears (p=0,02). Improvement occurred in auditory performance before and after training in the FT and IT groups, although no statistical difference was observed. CONCLUSION: The severity of the disorder seems to be related to the presence of (C)APD. The application of eight sessions of IT was also able to induce improvement in the performance of children with (C)AP and phonological disorders

Processamento auditivo (central) em crianças com dislexia: avaliação comportamental e eletrofisiológica / Auditory Processing in children with dyslexia: behavioral and electrophysiological assessmentJuliana Casseb Oliveira 15 February 2012 (has links)
There are several controversies about dyslexia. One of them is knowing whether the difficulty is in the general auditory processing or specifically in the perception of temporal differences of speech sounds, and whether the difficulty is specifically for rapid temporal changes or involves a broader range of auditory processing. Aims: The aims of this study were to compare the performance of children with dyslexia (Study Group) and of children with typical development (Control Group) in behavioral tests of (Central) Auditory Processing, and to compare the performance of Study Group and Control Group in Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials. Methods: 22 individuals with dyslexia and 16 individuals with no reading and writing complaints or disorders took part in the study. All individuals underwent behavioral and electrophysiological assessment of (Central) Auditory Processing. Results: Concerning the behavioral tests results in both groups, there was a significant statistical difference for the Frequency Pattern Test and for the Left ear in the Dichotic Digit test, with a worse performance observed in the Study Group. Considering the Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials, there was a difference for the N2 latency values between the Study Group and the Control Group, with greater latency values in the Study Group. This finding was statistically significant only for the Right ear. Conclusions: We may suggest that individuals with dyslexia present temporal auditory processing disorder, however we cannot affirm absence of disorders in other skills
