Mýty české hudební alternativy osmdesátých let / Myths of the czech music alternative in the 1980s

Jonssonová, Pavla January 2013 (has links)
Dissertation "Myths of the Czech Music Alternative in the 1980s" presents an anthropological view of the phenomenon of a parallel culture in a limiting situation. On the basis of biographical narratives, additional interviews and data gained from other types of sources, "myths" are constructed for seven major figures of the Czech alternative scene. This is an insider's ethnomusicological interpretation, based on Mircea Eliade's and Bronislaw Malinowski's concepts of myth as recurrent and exemplary models of behavior. The described personalities, Jazz Section (Prometheus), Miroslav Wanek ("hero's journey") Karel Babuljak ("search for paradise lost"), Pavel Zajíček (Odysseus), Mikoláš Chadima ("Rebel"), Oldřich Janota (Hermes), and Marka Míková (Psyche), represent some of the main trends in creative processes of the Czech music alternative scene with myth being used as a metaphor. The metaphor is understood here in the terms of Timothy Rice, i.e. as an organization principle of our thinking, as well as an illuminating image.

Vizuální poezie v síti mezinárodní komunikace. Pojmy, kategorie, typologie / Visual Poetry in the Network of the International Communication. Terms, Categories, Typology

Krátká, Eva January 2013 (has links)
The doctoral thesis is concerned diachronically with the term "visual poetry". The focus is on its progress during the period after the Second World War in the context of the extensively advanced movement, as substantially defined in international expert discussion. The use of the term, which is supported by the arguments of many theoreticians and artists of the period, is studied in the thesis from the viewpoint of the inspirational sources and specific contacts between art and literature. The focus is on the specific positions and strategies of visual perception. Visual poetry is studied - considering the different contexts of the European avant-garde movements and through the analysis of contemporaneous theories which defined three main lines of thought - as an incoherent art stream manifesting itself in the eclectic use of artistic media. In conclusion, the thesis looks at the project of Czech author poetics typology which grew from purely Czech examples based on formal language of the visual poetry works. The thesis seeks to point out the original aspects of the internal discussion of visual poetry, and to place it in the international context.

Skrytá avantgarda. Próza české poválečné avantgardy mezi individualismem a kolektivismem / The Hidden Avant-Garde. Czech Avant-Garde Fiction between Individualism and Collectivism

Malá, Zuzana January 2013 (has links)
in English This work focuses on the Czech afterwar avant-garde and its fiction in the wider European context. The main goal of our writing was diversifying literary historical field by integrating genre of short story and its authors into the interpretive frame of the prepoetistic avant-garde. We could intrude a canonic picture of the Czech avant-garde by enriching the interpretive frame of the new genre (short story) and new, often hardly known or forgotten, writers. Last but not least by doing so we were able to questioned and problematized basic oppositions such as expressionism × avant-garde, and mainly individualism × collectivism. We introduce the principal opposition individualism × collectivism, which in our opinion, organizes afterwar literary discourse, as a main connecting line between Czech avant-garde art and European art (collective and one of its manifestation - crowd, as one of the main themes of modernism and avant-garde). We interpretate beyond this scope the fictions of French unanimism as the main inspiration of the Czech afterwar avan-garde and its (collective) fiction as well.

Elena Jordi y el Mito de Thais

Mele Ballesteros, Irene 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis studies the impact of the work of Elena Jordi during the first Spanish avant-garde period (1890-1920) and the relationship between the myth of Thaïs and her homonymous film released in 1918. Here I track the trajectory of her career from its beginnings to culmination, when she directed Thaïs while leading an innovative vaudeville theatre company. The first chapter discusses the activity of Jordi as a Catalan actress, and woman entrepreneur in vaudeville. It analyzes the effect of the introduction of foreign vaudevilles on the reception of her work by critics through the theorization of Herni Gidel´s on vaudeville as genre. The second chapter reviews the cinematographic work of Jordi and situates it within the context of Catalan cinema´s early development as Spain´s first woman film director. After reflecting about the possible cultural influences that informed Jordi’s Thaïs, I explore the literary origins of the Legend of the Saint, an hagiography of Greek origins, and review relevant literary, operatic, and cinematic productions that incorporated this myth during the early Spanish avant-garde period. My conclusion highlights the original and similar features of Elena Jordi and Thaïs in their respective fields and different manifestations, simultaneously placing Jordi’s Thaïs in dialogue with the myth´s resurrection and its impact on the avant-garde feminist milieu. This demonstrates the formative influence of both Jordi as a pioneering artist and the enduring cultural influence of the myth of Thais on twentieth-century cultural production.

Frenette, Marie-Luce 09 February 2019 (has links)

Lee, Chao Yang 18 April 2023 (has links)
[EN] Boredom is an unpleasant feeling that is experienced by human beings in everyday life, in work, entertainment, education, and culture. In this research, we intend to explore the poetics of boredom in contemporary art through the investigation of formalism and conceptualism, tracing how boredom affects artistic production, turns into an art strategy, and affects the viewer. To carry out this work, we began with the study of philosophical, sociological, and literary resources related to boredom in order to configure its features and value. Later, through this understanding of boredom, we traced its manifestation in art. We discovered that, indeed, traditionally the established impression of art has been a simulation of illusion, creating an amazing world between the illusionistic representation of reality and imagination. However, since the avant-gardes, art has broken this language of illusionist representation and has proposed another language based on conceptualism and pure abstract visual experience. Such ruptures and conflicts with conventional art also bring with them the possibility of boredom in art, where art at first sight is no longer visually understandable and also does not completely depend on visual representation. In addition, we find this significant link between boredom and art specifically in the "Dada Manifesto," which declares the aim of defeating boredom in conventional art. However, paradoxically, Dadaism introduced strategies of boredom into art, which subsequently became influential in contemporary art. Thus, with the analysis of various artists and aesthetic strategies involved with boredom, we have revealed the poetics of boredom in contemporary art. / Lee, CY. (2023). The cinema of Jia Zhang-ke, an in-between / 贾樟柯电影,跨界

Xu, Ran 01 June 2013 (has links)
Jia Zhang-ke is a Chinese film director. He is generally regarded as a leading figure of the Sixth Generation mouvement of Chinese cinema. From his first short Xiao Shan Going Home (1995) to the last film I Wish I Knew (2010), from his early films trilogy Xiao Wu (1997), Platform (2000), Unknown Pleasures (2002), which are considered underground film, to the film Still Life in front of the blockbuster film Curse of the Golden Flower by Zhang Yi-mou, Jia Zhang-ke remains faithful to his attitude film d'auteur. He never changes. He is a true paradigm of Chinese society. He is as a writer who records the transformation of Chinese society in the 1980s and 1990s until today. He seeks the truth with sincerity, careful, not to simplify the reality, within the respect of man and the complexity of everyday life. What I think I have identified in my work, is the fertility oppositions symmetrical: avant garde and rear garde, old and new, traditional and modernity, cultural elite and mass culture. Because Jia Zhang-ke is always an in-between: Oriental and Occidental, process documentary and fiction process.

Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear

Arns, Inke 22 November 2004 (has links)
The dissertation researches a paradigmatic shift in the way artists reflect the historical avant-garde in visual and media art projects of the 1980s and 1990s in (ex-)Yugoslavia and Russia. The reasons for this paradigm shift can be found in the changing relationship to the notion of utopia, both in its political and its artistic connotation. In the 1980s, the reception both in so-called Soviet postutopianism (Il’ja Kabakov, Ėrik Bulatov, Oleg Vasil’ev, Komar & Melamid, Kollektive Aktionen) and in the Yugoslav retro-avant-garde (NSK, Mladen Stilinović, Malevič from Belgrads etc.) is characterized by a ‘discourse archeological’ interest in the potentially totalitarian elements of the avant-garde. Yet this point of view changes fundamentally during the 1990s in a younger generation of artists (neoutopianism and retroutopianism). Retroutopianism (Marko Peljhan, Vadim Fishkin) no longer primarily equates the utopianism of the avant-garde with totalitarian tendencies, but is reexamined with regard to its media-technological projections and designs, which were not only developed by individual avant-garde artists and theoreticians (Velimir Khlebnikov, Bertolt Brecht) but also by scientists and engineers during the early 20th century (Nikola Tesla, Herman Potočnik Noordung). Artistic projects of the time reveal an increasing ‘media-archeological’ fascination for the avant-garde's early utopian fantasies of technology. This fascination, in turn, is symptomatic for a significant change in the relationship to utopia and utopian thinking on the whole: utopian thinking per se separates from its unambiguously negative, political-totalitarian aftertaste (understood as 'utopianism') and takes on a new positive political connotation. It is now understood as an emancipatory or visionary-spectral potentiality ('utopicity').
