A Shadow of the Self: The Archetype of the Shadow in Aaron Douglas's Illustrations for James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones / Archetype of the Shadow in Aaron Douglas's Illustrations for James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones

Harris, Anne G., 1980- 03 1900 (has links)
vi, 63 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / In 1927, James Weldon Johnson published God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, a book of poems based on sermons heard in the African American Church. There are eight accompanying illustrations by Aaron Douglas. These images visually interpret the subject matter of the poems in a style that blends Cubism, Orphism, and Art Deco. Douglas depicted all the figures in these images, human and supernatural, in the form of shadow silhouettes, a stylistic practice he continued throughout his artistic career. The shadow is an ancient archetype in human mythology and psychology. This thesis looks at the depiction of shadows in a Jungian context. I explore the possibility that the use of the shadow allows deeper communication between the audience and the image by accessing the collective unconscious. I also examine the shadow as a metaphor for the socio-political oppression of African Americans rampant in the period between the wars. / The present research aims to report in detail the interpretive process of the conductor, from the perspective of the author of this work, using the work Appalachian Spring (1944) by the American composer Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990). The motivating question of this research is about how the interpretative process of conductor takes place, since it does not have the apparatus of the orchestra at the moment of preparation of the work. The first chapter, the introduction, presents a general study of the musical interpretation, the objectives, the justification and the methodology. In the second chapter, development of the research, there are three points of study: one on the construction of orchestral sonority on the part of the conductor, as it happens, the steps, difficulties and importance of this process for the musical accomplishment; a study on the musical silences and the importance of their observation for the work interpretation; and finally the analysis of the gestural repertoire used by the conductor in the work in question. Still in the development, the work brings the report of experience of the author on how he gave his rehearsals and his perspective until the concert. In the third chapter there is the conclusion of the research. In the annexes will be present the score with the markings of study of the author of the work

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present work introduces, in its first chapter, Wittgenstein’s skeptical paradox, which is, according to Kripke, the fundamental problem of Philosophical Investigations, and establishes that no course of action could be determined by a rule, because we cannot assure that the learning of a rule in the past can determine any behavior according to the same rule in the future. Later, this work presents what Kripke believes is the solution to the paradox, which lies in the argument against the private language, and represents a change in Wittgenstein’s philosophy, from his work in the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investigations. In Philosophical Investigations, Wittgenstein rejected the realistic view present in the Tractatus, which advocated a truth-conditional conception of meaning, and substituted for a view that gives more emphasis to the normative role of language. In this context, Kripke introduces the concept of justification conditions, substituting the concept of truth conditions in the role of declaring the truth or falsity of a sentence. Thus, the solution to the skeptical paradox is to see what circumstances actually license assertions and what role this license actually plays. The justification for following a rule is only possible within the context which the rule and the person who will follow it belong, or, according to Wittgenstein, a rule only has substantive content if considered inside its language game, therefore, it is not possible to follow a rule “privately”. In the second chapter of this work, we present positions pro and against Kripke’s interpretation of Wittgensten’s philosophy, aiming a confrontation of arguments, which reach to the conclusion, in the third chapter. Thereby, the conclusion of this work is that Kripke is correct in his interpretation of Wittgensten’s philosophy, particularly regarding the change in Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language from the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investigations, as a change from truth conditions to assertability or justification conditions.

Emotionell rytm i filmmanus : En studie av Aaron Sorkins The Social Network

Björk, Karoline January 2021 (has links)

Andersson, Annika January 2005 (has links)

An Uneasy Alliance: the Relationship Between Jefferson and Burr: 1791-1807

Helms, Dorcas K. 08 1900 (has links)
Papers, memoirs, diaries, letters and autobiographies from 1791-1807 are studied to determine the relationship between Jefferson and Burr. A limited examination of congressional records for the same period was made. Monographs and biographies of Jefferson, Burr and their contemporaries were studied. This study shows that the relationship between Jefferson and Burr was one of political expediency and that Jefferson's antipathy toward Burr began in 1791 and not as a result of the House presidential election of 1801. The thesis concludes that Jefferson used Burr's political influence in New England to achieve Democratic -Republican control of the federal government and then used the alleged conspiracy between Burr and the Federalists during the House election of 1801 as an excuse to begin Burr's political destruction.
