The aim of this paper is to gain an increased understanding of the relation betweencontemporary art and public spaces through a case study in the city of Borås. The studyfocuses on public space as a social process that is produced and reproduced in the meetingbetween people's actions and a physical place. The purpose of the case study is partly toinvestigate the importance of public art for Borås as a city and to analyze the city'sintentions behind its efforts. In addition to looking at the role and importance of art froma urban perspective the study examines people's private perceptions about what the art"does" and what it has potential to "do" with different public places in Borås. Theempirical material of the study consists largely of qualitative interviews. In addition tointerviews, observations have also been made to obtain an understanding and perceptionof public art in Borås on an individual level. The study has been able to demonstrate the versatile and complex importance of public art by linking the city's intentions of its efforts of public art with people's private experiences of art in the city. The city of Borås work with public art has grown and developed through a diverse interest in art in public spaces, where private and municipal actors have actively cooperated. A positive development where Borås work on public art has grown and developed has proven to be a new way for the city to profile itself and create a new identity. There are different opinions and thoughts about what public art means for Borås as a city and whether it can be considered as part of the city's new identity or not. People's differences means that they perceive and experience public art in many differentways. For someone, the art creates conflicts when it is considered provocative, while forsomeone else it can symbolize a memory, create peace or new perspectives. I wish that thestudy can lead to an increased reflection and understanding of the importance andpotential of public art as a part of the planning of the public and built environment. Withcontemporary public art as a tool, planning can increase the livability in the public spacesof the city.

This thesis examines how search engine optimization of webpages affects accessibility for human users. Methods for search engine optimization are well documented, as is the important principles of accessibility. However, the relationship between these factors is seldom described.First, the theory behind the approach to search engine optimization, and information about what affects the websites accessibility are described. Then a descriptive case study is presented where the effect of search engine optimization is assessed according to the established guidelines, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0.The results of the study demonstrate that certain aspects of search engine optimization benefit the accessibility, but that there are some aspects of search engine optimization that harm the accessibility, for example, the headline structure. However, the end result is that accessibility benefits more from search engine optimization than it is harmed by it.

The Frequency of Blood Donation in Canada: An Exploration of Individual and Contextual DeterminantsCimaroli, Kristina 10 1900 (has links)

Blood products are used for transfusion in many routine procedures as well as emergency medical care. The balance between the supply and demand of blood products in Canada is being threatened by an increasing aging population, a growing immigrant population, and advances in medical technology which places additional strain on the blood supply. The objective of this research is to investigate the effects of demographic determinants and clinic accessibility on the frequency of blood donation in Canada excluding the province of Québec, providing a national assessment of blood donor correlates at the individual level. Exploration of these demographic factors in addition to clinic accessibility may help to explain why a limited number of repeat donors are currently contributing, with many donors giving blood only once a year. Repeat donors are vital to maintain a safe and secure blood supply, therefore it is important to retain existing donors in addition to recruiting new volunteers. In this study, individual donor and clinic information is obtained from the Canadian Blood Services 2008 national dataset, with contextual data from the 2006 Canadian Census. Discrete choice models are used to assess the effects of these variables on the frequency of blood donation across the country, highlighting the importance of clinic accessibility. The analysis is prepared for major Census Metropolitan Areas in Canada. Results may contribute to service optimization and targeted advertising, ultimately aiming to encourage the eligible population to donate.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Testing Underlying Mechanisms of Forgiveness: Need for Closure and AccessibilityLaw, Mary Kate 30 May 2012 (has links)
The abundance of forgiveness research has advanced scientific knowledge of the construct. Its multifaceted nature, however, has created specialization and domain-dependent research (e.g., close-relationship vs. non-relationship forgiveness). The current paper argues that a comprehensive framework that could be applied across domains is needed. The general principles perspective (Higgins, 1990, 1999), which identifies mechanisms that explain both chronic and situational variance, was used as a framework for forgiveness, specifically the mechanisms of accessibility and need for closure. Two studies tested the principles, a two-part study (N = 244 and 78, respectively) and an online survey (N = 214). The two-part study tested chronic accessibility for forgiveness (Accessibility Study One) within the context of the religiosity-forgiveness relationship (an area that has previously produced complex and contradictory results) and both the chronic and situational influence of need for closure (Need for Closure Study). The online survey was designed to test both situational and chronic accessibility (Accessibility Study Two) by priming half of the participants with religious words. Students from a large, Mid-Atlantic university participated.
For accessibility, it was proposed that religious individuals would have higher chronic accessibility for forgiveness, because of the emphasis religions place on it; similarly, it was proposed that increasing accessibility for religiosity would increase situational accessibility for forgiveness. Results supported a weak, positive relationship between religiosity and chronic accessibility for forgiveness; however, increased accessibility did not relate to likelihood to forgive future transgressions. For situational accessibility, the religious prime did not successfully influence accessibility for religiosity; thus, situational accessibility could not be tested.
For need for closure, it was proposed that forgiveness requires some comfort with uncertainty in order to engage in the process. Therefore, chronic need for closure was expected to negatively relate to likelihood to forgive future transgressions. Results replicated this previously found relationship. For situational need for closure, manipulated through perceived time limitations, it was proposed that it would interact with chronic forgiveness to predict likelihood to forgive, because as need for closure increases so too does automaticity. Forgiveness is arguably an automatic response for someone high in chronic forgiveness. Results did not support the interaction effect.
In general, the project supported the chronic influence of the principles but did not support the situational. The limitations of the current project necessitate further inquiry for clarification, though some conclusions are suggested. Results suggest that motivations may be more influential than cognitions in forgiveness, that forgiveness research may require more highly contextualized models, and thus that the potential advantages of a comprehensive framework will require more sophisticated theoretical and empirical work. / Ph.
