The role of emotional intelligence in the adaptation of adolescent boys in a private schoolErasmus, Cathariena Petronella 31 March 2007 (has links)
The lack of emotional intelligence can be linked to problem behaviour in adolescent boys between 14 and 18 years of age. The concepts of emotions, emotional intelligence, adolescents and adaptation formed the focal point of this research. Profiles were compiled from data obtained from the Q-metrics emotional intelligence questionnaire, the Sacks Sentence Completion Test, an unstructured interview and the projection media (Draw a person). Detailed information with regards to risk and protective factors for each adolescent boy were provided. The above techniques and measuring instruments provided a holistic picture of the adolescent's level of emotional functioning as well as hypotheses for future therapy. The importance of the father-son relationship in the adolescent years was stressed. Early identification of adolescent boys in a private school (with low levels of emotional development) enables the school to implement programmes aimed at developing emotional intelligence. / Educational Studies / M. The relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in GautengNdlovu, Velly 04 1900 (has links)
The research focused on the relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in Gauteng. A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of (N = 198) of African (92.9%), female (57.6%), single (96.0%), aged 21 years and younger (93.9%) students enrolled at Gauteng TVET colleges for N1 – N6 Engineering Studies (32.8%). A correlational analysis indicated differences between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability and the study reveals that overall hardiness was significantly related to overall career adaptability. A stepwise regression analysis indicated that gender and the hardiness attributes (commitment, control and challenge) predicted career adaptability. The test for significant mean differences indicated that age, gender and field of study differ significantly between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability. Limitations for the study are outlined. Furthermore, recommendations are suggested for use by human resource regarding career development practices for TVET college students. The study concludes with an evaluation of its contribution. / Human Resource Management / M. Com. (Human Resource Management)

migração e as dificuldades enfrentadas ao chegar; as circunstancias em que conheceram seus maridos;
This dissertation aims to analyze and identify the process of migration of Brazilian women to Switzerland who came to marry with Swiss men and the repercussions of this marriage in their lives. In this perspective were considered the aspects related to the motivations for the migration and the
difficulties at the arrival; the circumstances at meeting their husbands; the adaptation to the country, to
the family in law and to the marriage itself; and finally the feelings experienced and the needs felt. The
research is divided into three articles, one theoretical and two empirical. The first one presents a brief
historical uprising about marriage and the transformation this institution has been suffering a long time. The second article searches to investigate the motivations of the migration and how the participants came to marry. The third article studies the intercultural marriage between Brazilian
women and Swiss men, and the repercussions of this marriage in their lives. The methodology was based in a qualitative approach. Twelve Brazilian women who are married with Swiss men and live in Switzerland in the German part were interviewed. The appreciation of the data was realized with
Minayos Content Analysis. The results indicate that the motivations for the migration of the participants are related to the search of better life opportunities or for falling in love with a Swiss. Some married for staying in the country, other married because of love. Nevertheless, in general, the difficulties found in marriage were similar: difficulties with the language, swiss way of thinking, children education, religion and relatives

do hospital. Isso poderia proporcionar um espaço de fala, escuta e troca de experiências, onde os mesmos poderiam ressaltar, inclusive, as fantasias referentes ao cenário da UTI, bem como as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas neste período de internação do familiar / This dissertation aimed to investigate the experience and coping strategies of sons and daughters whose mother or father are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit. The study is divided in two parts: A theoretical paper, based on a bibliographic review of SCIELO, BIREME and PSYCHINFO databases. In such review, studies focusing on specific relatives were not found, except when it comes to parents whose babies are in Neonatal Intensive Care; there is a lack of investigations on coping strategies used by relatives in this situation and studies using both qualitative and quantitative methods were not found. Considering this, an empirical research was carried on focusing on such aspects, with a qualitative-quantitative
approach. Participants were 30 sons or daughters of patients in ICUs. Chosen instruments were: a socio-demographic form; the Coping Strategies Inventory by Folkman and Lazarus (1985), adapted by Savóia and cols (1996); and a semi-structured interview. The Inventory
allowed the identification of the following predominant coping strategies: Positive Reappraisal (97%); Social Support (93%) and Problem Solving (77%). Spearman correlation coefficients were estimated for the 66 questions on the Inventory and some variables: Religion presented negative correlation with item 51; Age above 50 presented positive and negative correlations with items 14 and 31, respectively; Education (university level)
presented positive correlation with items 2 and 61 and negative correlation with items 25 and 32. There was an association between parenthood (sons with mothers in UCI) and questions 2, 3, 12, 25, 27, 34, 35 e 39. Despite that, it is not possible to stand that there is a significant
positive or negative correlation among these variables and specific coping strategies. The following negative feelings where verified on the interviews: suffering, preoccupation, fear of death and shock; the fact that the patient spends most of the time alone is the biggest source of concern; the relatives routine is impaired due to the parents hospitalization. Personal, spiritual and professional growth came out as positive reappraisal and participants were satisfied with the hospital staff attention regarding themselves and their parents. These results reinforce the need of a Life Quality Program for Relatives with parents in ICU, which could promote an opportunity to talk, listen and exchange experiences, including their fantasies
regarding the ICU scenario, as well as coping strategies used during the period their parents are hospitalized

Preparation for immigration : a psychological educational perspectiveVan Coller, Elizabeth 30 November 2002 (has links)
The phenomenon of migration has given rise to prolific research emphasising the psychological adaptation of persons post-immigration. This study focuses on psychological preparation pre-immigration.
Literature study and empirical research establish that an immigrant's adaptation is influenced by migration motivation and expectations. Several phases of adaptation occur, during which time individual stress is influenced by one's perception of the balance between the stresses of the new environment and one's personal and external resources. Various migration stressors could be identified in the sample group of South Africans living in Australia.
Personal and external resources include effective coping strategies, a positive, committed outlook, strong self-esteem as well as a cohesive family and an acquired support system.
Finally, guidelines were produced reflecting that the preparation for immigration is a complex and highly individualised task comprised of providing information, encouraging self-assessment and supplying training to improve the coping startegies of the individual.
The birth of a sibling often results in a toddler displaying changes in behaviour, emotions
and relationships. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the mother's
perception, experiences, as well as coping strategies of the toddler's adaptation problems,
following the birth of a sibling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine
mothers. The study revealed that the mother's lack of knowledge and understanding of
the developmental phase of the toddler, as well as the adaptation problems, manifested in
misconceptions. These misconceptions affected her experiences of the adaptation
problems, as well as how she managed it. The researcher concluded that mothers should
be referred for parental guidance when adaptation problems are reported. Various
recommendations to be used within parental guidance have been made. / Social Work / M.Diac. (Spelterapie-Rigting)
