Summaries in English and Afrikaans / Any loss in an adolescent's life may lead to shattered dreams. Therapists, who work with adolescents who have experienced a loss must support and guide them to develop an awareness of their needs, impulses and dreams. Therapists must furthermore be aware of the factors that contributed to a turning point for the adolescents who managed to recreate their dreams.
Adolescents' dreams are influenced by the current circumstances in South Africa, as well as their parents' perceptions and parenting styles. The loss of what could have been, after a loss, must also be addressed. The gestalt therapist establishes the process of awareness in the here-and-now. Furthermore, the adolescent must be guided to accept responsibility for his own choices and to purposeful create a new life dream.

'n Spelterapeutiese program vir die emosioneel beseerde pre-adolessent: `n gestaltbenaderingBekker, Greta 30 November 2003 (has links)
Emotional abuse is present in all forms of abuse and neglect, which implies that emotional abuse has a devastating impact on all the developmental factors of the pre-adolescent in the phase where he is striving towards independence and where his relations towards his environment are crucial. The Gestalt approach forms the basis for this recommended program, and makes provision for a holistic approach, which brings the child in contact with himself, his environment and his perception there of. The study focuses on a descriptive research methodology and according to the first five phases of the intervention research design, developed a play therapeutically program for the emotionally hurt pre-adolescent within the Gestalt approach.
A literature study was undertaken to establish a theoretic perspective on the following aspects:
 The impact of emotional abuse on the pre-adolescent within the boundaries of the family system.
 The influence of abuse on the development of the pre-adolescent and how a child can be assisted through play therapy.
 A theoretic foundation of the Gestalt approach and the application of this approach within the theoretic play therapeutic process with the pre-adolescent.
The above mentioned theoretic perspective answered the first research question.
An empirical survey was done to supplement the literature study. A qualitative study was done and the play therapeutic program was implemented. The program was implemented through eight sessions and by utilizing eight activity forms. Through this process direct, systematic and participant observation could be recorded directly on the activity form, which took the format of a case study.
The above mentioned empirical research and measuring scales answered the second research question.
As a result of the study the conclusion was reached that a play therapeutic program for the emotionally hurt pre-adolescent within the Gestalt approach can be successfully implemented and that the pre-adolescent can be empowered by the use of this program. Two measuring scales confirmed the results of this program. Recommendations with regard to the content of the program as well as further research as a result of the conclusions were formulated. / Religious Studies and Arabic / D.Diac (Play Therapy)

Bemagtiging van adolessente slagoffers van gesinsgeweld = Empowerment of adolescent victims of family violenceOlivier, Annelie 30 November 2005 (has links)
The research deals with the empowerment of adolescent victims of family violence. The purpose of the study was to give an account of the therapeutic intervention process of two case studies, by means of a descriptive, qualitative type of research. This research was executed via semi-structured interviews by the researcher.
The population in the study was limited to adolescent victims between the age of twelve to eighteen years, who are victims of family violence. The sample in this study was two respondents. The children are students at a high school in Roodepoort.
After completion of the empiric study it was concluded that the adolescent who is exposed to family violence, is empowered if a therapeutic process - like the one suggested by Oaklander (1994:289) which applies gestalt play therapeutic techniques - is followed. As clearly shown in the literature, the researcher came to the conclusion that family violence has a destructive effect on the adolescent and that he can be empowered by gestalt play therapy.
OPSOMMING
Social work / MDIAC (PLAY THERAPY)

adolessent traumaties is.
Uit 'n literatuurstudie is bepaal watter probleme/behoeftes
adolessente in hersaamgestelde gesinne ervaar.
oor tien byeenkomste aangebied.
se doelstelling bereik / Divorces and remarriages are increasing. The literature study and
practical experience of the researcher, has shown that the
adaption to remarriage is the most traumatic for adolescents.
A literature study was done to determine the problems/needs of
adolescents in remarried families. The nominal group technique
was then used to refine the problems/needs. The results showed
clearly that problems in remarried families are a result of
communication problems. The group work programme with
stepadolescents was therefore composed.
Psychodrama is the most ideal method in working with adolescents.
Two measuring instruments were used, namely the communication
questionnaire and the Hudson-index which was modified from parentchild
relationships to step-parental relationships. A pilot study group with five step-adolescents over five meetings
and an experimental group was then held with ten step-adolescents
over a period of ten meetings were held. Measurement was done
before and after the group meetings. Both measuring instruments
recorded growth in skills and the researcher's objective was
reached / Social Work / M.A. (Sosiale Wetenskappe)

The career planning needs of senior public secondary school learners in Gaborone, Botswana / Nnananyana K.E. MekgweMekgwe, Nnananyana Khutsafalo Erminah January 2010 (has links)
Career choice is one of the most daunting decisions one has to make, since it has implications that affect a variety of aspects in one’s life. For adolescents, career decision–making is even more challenging because it is done at a time when adolescents are going through a period of identity formation, and when their core personalities have not yet been fully formed. It is therefore essential to provide systematic career guidance programmes that will assist adolescents in their career development in order to empower them to make realistic career choices.
The school, as a place where adolescents spend most of their time, can be used as a vehicle to promote meaningful career development amongst adolescent learners. However, the contribution by adolescents themselves in determining the appropriate content and career guidance services/activities that will best address their needs is vital.
Senior secondary school learners, in particular, are in a position to articulate their career planning needs and to identify the deficits in existing career guidance programmes.
The situation in Botswana where career guidance forms only a quarter of the public secondary school guidance and counselling programme, which, with all its four components, is allocated only one 40 minute–period per week deserves special attention. Hence, this study set out to determine:
* the career planning needs of Senior Public Secondary School Learners in Gaborone, Botswana as articulated by the learners themselves;
* the extent to which the current career guidance programme in Senior Public Secondary Schools meets the needs of the learners.
A mixed methods design, consisting of the use of a questionnaire to collect the quantitative data and a qualitative method in the form of focus–group interviews, was used to collect the data for the study.
The findings of the study highlight several challenges which hamper the provision of a systematic career guidance programme to the learners, which include limited time, lack of trained personnel and less than optimal career service delivery practices. The lack of key career exploration activities in schools, such as the use of internet resource materials and career video/audio tapes, job–shadowing, career field–trips/excursions and, in some cases, career talks, results in learners experiencing unmet career needs. This situation affects the extent to which the curriculum in place addresses the career planning needs of the learners. No significant differences were noted in the needs of the learners according to gender.
The study reveals that the Career Guidance Programme provides the relevant theoretical frame–work for providing the necessary assistance to learners to make informed career decisions. However, the actual implementation of the programme in the different schools leaves a lot to be desired, with several learning outcomes for the career guidance programme in both Form 4 and Form 5 not being achieved. The effectiveness of the annual career fair as a major method of disseminating career information to learners also came into question since most learners expressed having gained minimal benefit from it. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.
