Jack London: Landscape, Love, and Place

Ladd, Kristin Yoshiko 01 August 2013 (has links)
In Jack London: Landscape, Love, and Place, American Studies theories and methods formed the prime basis for analysis of London's biography, historical context, and literary significance. Particularly, the ideas of agrarianism, the Turner Thesis moment, Western literature, American masculinity, Victorian ideals, and sustainable farm practices in America were used to understand London's motivations for writing and creating his farm, his influence on American literature, and his texts' abilities to open avenues between literature and place-based education. Key concepts that influenced how London's works could be incorporated into and applied to didactic theory included David Sobel's seminal works in place-based education. The principle idea behind this thesis was to analyze one author and two of his works in a wider theoretical context, and then, to use that analysis to apply the theories to practical methods of educating future students in sustainable practices, place-based learning, and future work in understanding their impact on the ecosystems of their local communities and landscapes.

From Agriculture to Ecotourism: Socio-economic Change, Community Development and Environmental Sustainability in a Costa Rican Village

Howitt, Josephine B. 30 August 2012 (has links)
This research is an ethnographic case study of the emerging ecotourism economies in the agricultural village of San Gerardo de Rivas, Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. Due to the village’s location as the main entry point to climb the country’s tallest mountain within Chirripó National Park, the majority of households in San Gerardo now derive some income from tourism. I conducted twenty household surveys, followed by twenty-one semi-structured interviews with male and female heads of households and representatives of local organizations and tourism businesses. Drawing on local perspectives, I found that ecotourism was a complementary income source to agriculture and that men and women were engaging differently in ecotourism employment. Local organizations were involved in the participatory management of ecotourism activities within Chirripó National Park. Ecotourism has affected environmental practices and local people are strategically negotiating the direction of tourism development, including through using environmental discourses, to optimize the benefits to their community.

An Inverted Market: Niche Market Dynamics Of The Local Organic Food Movement

Schrank, Zachary January 2013 (has links)
The market for local organic foods in the United States has grown tremendously in recent years. Compared to a meager existence just a decade ago, local organic options now flourish through the form of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), thousands of farmers markets, community cooperative grocery stores, and upscale restaurants. Interestingly, the greatest percentage of growth in farmers markets in the US has occurred in the last 2-3 years during the Great Recession despite economic downturn. This changing nature of agriculture and new developments of alternative niche markets have captured the attention of scholars. Most studies tend to focus on economic, organizational, or even nutritional elements reflected in the food industry. Less emphasis, however, has been devoted to the roles of cultural consumption, values, and desires that have propagated the swift and substantial growth of this movement. Direct sales in local organic niche markets and the CSA model provide an atmosphere for repetitive interpersonal interaction between farmer and buyer around a product infused with shared meaning. I utilize ethnographic data from an extended case of a local organic farm in Southern Arizona and interviews with over 50 of their CSA members. This dissertation addresses how and why both producers and consumers co-produce alternative visions and meanings that sustain a viable local niche food economy. I argue that the members involved in this niche market sector hold unified reactions against the global expansionary aims of food corporations. Inverse to market forces, the cultural and economic ethos driving this movement originates from appreciation for craft production as an expression of commodity de-fetishization, personal investment and embeddedness in local economies, and desires for authenticity in community and consumption.

Šventumo topika Marcelijaus Martinaičio ir Jono Juškaičio poezijoje / The topic of sanctity in the poetry of Marcelijus Martinaitis and Jonas Juskaitis

Zonienė, Kristina 16 August 2007 (has links)
The horizon of sanctity topics helps to perceive semantic and ideological implication of the poets Martinaitis and Juškaitis of the generation of thirties. The dispersion of sanctity meanings in their poetry is appealing individually and at the same time helps to conceive the poetical paradigm of sanctity. The motives, which actualize the manifestations of sanctity, images and life models, represent religious and philosophical tradition of the old peasantry culture and its hermeutic situation in the context of modern poetical discourse. The features of sacred conception, landscape and divine essence become a handy semantic and ideological orientation, which allows revealing valuable senses of Martinaitis and Juškaitis in the tradition of their life and creation. The object of the present work is creation of 2 generation poets of thirties of XX century (J.Juškaitis and M.Martinaitis) in the context of sanctity topics. The topics of the mentioned poets’ sanctity reveals itself as the sense, which implies the individual creational script and the value, which at the same time highlights the general conception of sanctity in the historical context. The research problem of the present work is how in the poetry, born during sanctity depreciation and social cataclysms, the sense of sanctity is created, what similar and different archetypes are revealed by recreating the senses of Christian and indo-European sanctity paradigm.
