Innovative Collaboration in Agri-Food Systems

Piñeiro, Verónica Ana 02 September 2022 (has links)
El primer artículo se titula "Collaboration for social innovation in the agri-food system in Latin America and the Caribbean". El segundo artículo tiene como título "Collaboration through EIP-AGRI Opera-tional Groups and their role as innovation intermediaries". El primer artícle es titula "Collaboration for social innovation in the agri-food system in Latin America and the Caribbean". El segon article té com a títol "Collaboration through EIP-AGRI Operational Groups and their role as innovation intermediaries". / [EN] The overall aim of this thesis is to identify the determinants of or characteristics that can lead to successful collaboration between actors in the agri-food system. To this end, an analysis is conducted of the cooperation activities developed by farms, agribusiness companies, institutions, and agri-food organisations, which undertake innovative actions in Spain and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The research addresses different domains where innovative collaborations occur; namely, the scientific domain, the multi-actor platform domain, and the domain of farmers and their institutions. The resulting thesis is structured in three chapters, corresponding to three scientific articles published in international journals. Each of them deals with a specific aspect, which together fulfil the aforementioned research objective. The first article is entitled "Collaboration for social innovation in the agri-food system in Latin America and the Caribbean." Using bibliometric techniques, this study aims to review the state of the knowledge on innovative collaboration in LAC's food and rural systems. Specifically, it analyses the cooperation by farms and agribusiness firms to undertake innovative activities. The second article is entitled "Collaboration through EIP-AGRI Operational Groups and their role as innovation intermediaries." A survey to operational groups (OG) and a factor analysis are carried out to identify these groups' perspective on their roles as innovation intermediaries. This type of analysis makes it possible to address the collaboration between actors from different fields and sectors aimed at cooperating and providing innovative solutions to agricultural problems. The third article, "Drivers of joint cropland management strategies in agri-food cooperatives," studies collaboration through an innovative strategy coordinated by cooperatives. The main objective is to advance the knowledge of the characteristics of the cooperatives that head up this type of initiative. The study is mainly based on data from a survey of cooperative managers about their views on the main advantages and drivers of joint land management strategies, and the methodology applied is Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). Findings confirm that progress has been made in the study of innovative collaboration in the LAC agri-food sector. The main drivers of collaboration include social innovation, knowledge, sustainable management, and social capital. In the scientific domain, growing academic interest in collaborative systems in LAC can be seen. Studies have been produced by researchers from different countries, which has generated and enhanced collaboration among international researchers. Results from the second article focus on the collaborative actions developed by multi-actor platforms. These actions can be framed as functions of innovation intermediaries. Three of the most common functions identified are innovation process management, demand articulation, and institutional support and innovation brokering. Finally, in the domain of farmers and their institutions, the research focuses on the drivers of successful collaboration. Social and economic innovation, size, and propensity for cooperation characterise the cooperatives that successfully take on a joint cropland initiative. From the results, we can conclude that collaboration for social innovation in the rural sector can be a way to address structural problems in different domains. Knowledge of the main determinants of collaboration in the rural and agri-food environment in Spain and LAC will help public and private organisations to make better decisions aimed at promoting innovative cooperation actions in rural territories. Future research can build on these results and focus on other characteristics that determine successful innovative collaboration in the agri-food sector. / Gracias al Proyecto “Strengthening innovation policy in the agri-food sector” (RTI2018-093791-B-C22) financed by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and “ERDF A way to build Europe” / Piñeiro, VA.

Kotzé, Derica Alba 11 1900 (has links)
Millions of people in the world experience food insecurity and one out ofevery 50 hungry people lives in South Africa. There is enough food on our planet to assure every person of an adequate supply of food; however, this does not guarantee food security for all. This is the food paradox: despite a global surplus production of food, millions of people experience malnutrition and hunger all over the world, but especially in the developing countries. South Africa is no exception and despite self-sufficiency in food, the food equation is not balanced. An extreme gap exists between the production and consumption of food. Consequently, the problem researched in this study is the lack of food security in a world context with surplus food and how this is reflected in South Africa. Against this background a study was undertaken of the causes of food insecurity and the theories and explanations of famine. The focus of this research study is threefold. Firstly it focuses on a conceptual enquiry intohunger, poverty, food security and famine in Africa. Secondly there is an enquiry into the causes of the lack of food security in Africa. Thirdly it focuses on South Africa and an enquiry is done into the incidence of hunger, malnutrition and poverty, and into the national context of food security with the aim of identifying relevant problems in food security. It was found that food security is determined by the availability of food (supply) and the capability of people to obtain it (demand). It appears that the development process, government policy, ecological environment and technology, science and research directly affect the food security of people, and that South Africa does not differ from other African countries in this regard. Although South Africa has achieved food self-sufficiency, millions of people experience hunger because of poverty and the lack of entitlements. The study shows that the South African government has various policy measures for the promotion of food security in place, but that food security does not materialise in practice. / Development Studies / D.Litt. et Phil. Impact of Prosopis (mesquite) invasion and clearing on ecosystem structure, function and agricultural productivity in semi-arid Nama Karoo rangeland, South Africa

Ndhlovu, Thabisisani 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScConEcol (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: I evaluated the impact of Prosopis invasion and clearing on ecological structure, function and agricultural productivity in heavily grazed Nama Karoo rangeland on two sheep farms near the town of Beaufort West in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. My aims were to (1) determine the effects of invasion and clearing on rangeland vegetation composition, diversity (alien and indigenous species richness) and structure (alien and indigenous species cover), soil vegetation cover (plant canopy and basal cover) and agricultural productivity (grazing capacity), (2) describe the vegetation processes that underlay the invasion and clearing impacts and (3) evaluate the success of clearing in facilitating unaided restoration of ecological structure, function and agricultural productivity in formerly invaded rangeland. I hypothesised that invasion would significantly change rangeland vegetation composition and structure, leading to greater alien species richness and cover and lower indigenous species richness and cover while clearing would lead to lower alien species diversity and cover and greater indigenous species richness and cover. In addition I hypothesized that invasion would reduce rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity while clearing would substantially increase them. Finally I predicted that vegetation composition, alien and indigenous species cover and richness, plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity would revert to pre-invasion status and levels within four to six years of clearing. My results suggest that in heavily grazed Nama Karoo rangeland Prosopis invasion (~15 percent canopy cover) and clearing can significantly change rangeland vegetation composition, with invasion leading to greater alien species cover and lower indigenous species richness, while clearing leads to lower alien species richness and cover and greater indigenous species richness and cover. However invasion seems to have no effect on alien species richness and overall indigenous species cover. Clearing appears to facilitate the spontaneous restoration of alien species cover and indigenous species richness within four to six years but not species composition, alien species richness and indigenous species cover. In addition my results also indicate that Prosopis invasion can lower rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity while clearing, even under heavy grazing, can substantially raise them. Clearing however does not seem to facilitate the restoration of rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity to pre-invasion levels within four to six years after clearing.

Psychological barriers that limit climate-friendly food choices in a South African context

Theron, Elzarie 01 1900 (has links)
By following a climate-friendly diet, consumers have the potential to reduce climate change. However, despite the growing awareness of the climate-friendly food options that are available, consumers still choose foods with a high carbon footprint. Following a survey design, this study aimed to determine the extent to which four psychological processes (denial, conflicting goals and aspirations, tokenism, and interpersonal influence) limit consumers’ climate-friendly food choices in South Africa. Data were collected from 151 participants using the Climate-friendly Food Choices Scale and the Psychological Barriers Scale. Regression analysis indicated that conflicting goals and aspirations and denial were the two main psychological barriers to climate-friendly food choices. Overall the barriers were negatively associated with climate-friendly food choices. Gender did not produce a significant effect in the study. Different age groups varied with regards to the extent to which they experienced the psychological barriers, but they did not differ significantly with regards to how often they made climate-friendly food choices. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Das Problem der Welternährung: Simulationen zu Einflussfaktoren, die Bedeutung von Agrartechnologien und gesellschaftliche Einschätzungen in Deutschland / The Problem of World Food Security: Simulations on Influencing Factors, the Impact of Agricultural Technologies, and Public Opinion in Germany

Klümper, Wilhelm 13 November 2014 (has links)

An economic analysis of the factors that affect the success of new freehold growers in the South African sugar industry.

Floyd, Warren N. January 2009 (has links)
The South African (SA) Sugar Industry is committed to transformation in land ownership and supports the SA government's target to transfer 30% of freehold sugarcane land to previously disadvantaged individuals (PDls) by 2014 via the land market under the willing buyer/willing seller principle. The medium-scale farmer scheme for emerging commercial sugarcane farmers, which was introduced in 1996 to help redistribute commercial sugarcane farmland to PDIs is an important component of the SA Sugar Industry's land reform strategy. The average financial performance of emerging commercial farmers (now called New Freehold Growers or NFGs) in the SA Sugar Industry was below that of large-scale commercial farmers during 1997-2007 (real average annual net return per hectare of R390 versus R3 075 in 2007 Rand). Given that this trend raises concerns about the long-term viability of NFGs, the first aim of this study is to identify factors that distinguish between successful, less successful and unsuccessful NFGs using a stratified random sample of 96 NFGs in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) surveyed during July-November 2008. These NFGs were classified according to whether their mortgage loans were current (successful), in arrears (less successful) or in the process of legal action (unsuccessful). Student t-tests indicate that successful NFGs, on average, had statistically significantly more experience in farming sugarcane, larger farm sizes (proxied by average annual gross farm income), greater solvency and liquidity, and larger areas annually replanted to sugarcane than the less successful and unsuccessful NFGs. The successful NFGs also placed relatively more emphasis on computerized record keeping systems that can save time in conducting production and financial analyses to improve farm profitability. They also on average tended to make more use of their own financial record keeping system in addition to the services of bookkeepers, and used more risk management strategies than unsuccessful NFGs, in particular having off-farm investments and keeping cash and credit reserves. A multinomial logit model of factors affecting the sample NFGs' mortgage loan repayment status estimated that extension contact, production and financial risk management capacity, farm financial and production management ability, own record keeping and cash management, and having more sugarcane farm experience to operate larger farm sizes were key determinants of successful loan repayment. The results suggest that policy makers can promote the viability of NFGs by (1) encouraging them to manage solvency and liquidity levels and implement replanting schedules in line with industry norms (e.g. debt:asset ratio of 0.5 or lower, and the replanting of 10% of the area under cane (AUC) per annum); and (2) facilitate the transfer of adequate size farms (expected annual gross farm income can meet annual loan repayments) in commercial transactions or transactions funded via government grants to farmers who have the relevant farming experience. New Freehold Growers are also encouraged to build business relationships with industry support staff, implement good record keeping practices, and develop strategies to manage risk (e.g. off-farm investment and holding cash and credit reserves). The second aim of this study was to document the NFGs' perceptions of the scheme and industry role players in order to identify what aspects could be improved for both current and future farmers. The results suggest that most sample respondents (84%) can identify with, or have experienced the relatively low current returns (cash flow problems) usually associated with the early years after land purchase, while about 60% of the sample NFGs would have preferred to first lease their land before buying. Future NFGs, or the beneficiaries of other land reform initiatives, must be informed that an investment in land has low current returns relative to capital growth and that the annual profit from farming is low relative to the land value. The possibility of leasing could also be considered for future land transfers to NFGs or other land reform beneficiaries to help manage the liquidity constraints associated with land purchase. Ninety-nine percent of the sample NFGs felt that it was important for new farmers to have a mentor. Post-settlement support thus needs attention from industry role players, and a sustainable mentorship programme could, in part, meet this need. / Thesis (M.Sc.Agric.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2009.

Rural households livelihoods' strategies and opportunities with regard to farming: a case of Intsika Yethu Local Municipality

Gidi, Lungile Sivuyile January 2013 (has links)
South Africa and other developing countries are grappling with high levels of poverty as a result of slow to negligible rural development. Irrigation development is one essential component that can be used to address the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in rural areas. In the President‟s “State of the Nation Address” in 2011, the President of South Africa outlined measures to reduce hunger and poverty in communal areas through enhanced government‟s expenditures in rural infrastructure developments, especially for such amenities as irrigation and roads, with a view to promoting food security. The broad objective of this study is to assess livelihood strategies and opportunities with regard to farming in Qamata area of Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. The stratified random sampling method was applied in order to choose a sample of 70 household that were interviewed by means of semi-structured questionnaires. Out of these, 53 belonged to the irrigation project and 17 farmers were non-irrigation farmers. The results show that women play an active role in agriculture. The Multiple Regression model was used to assess the relative importance of different livelihood strategies adopted by both irrigation and non-irrigation farmers in improving household food security and welfare in Qamata. More specifically, the study assessed the impact of different livelihood strategies on production of butternut, goats, maize and poultry (Chicken) in Qamata. The results show increased agricultural production, crop diversification and higher incomes from irrigation farming as compared to dry land farming. Irrigation farming has enabled many households to diversify their sources of income and therefore include activities and enterprises that contribute to enhanced household welfare. The study showed that household size is crucial in crop production, followed by gender of the household head. The government and research institutes need to come up with programmes to train people on ways to produce crop and livestock products more efficiently.

Gomes, Carlos Marcelo Maciel 10 September 2014 (has links)
This Masters Thesis, titled |A Política dos Arranjos Produtivos Locais na Busca Sisifiana pelo Desenvolvimento|, aims to analyze the structural changes expressed by adjusting socio productive in the municipalities of Porto da Folha (SE) and Gararu (SE) with the institutionalization the National Policy on Support to Local Productive Arrangements (LPAs), considered as catalysts of development included in the territorial approach. The analysis was based on the assumptions of dialectical materialism, observing the main determinations in contradictory relation between capital/work on different scales. Speaking of Territorial Development submits the Hinterland of Sergipe to a Development Plan that involves the internalization and devolution of productive activities in Sergipe, linking the field to the market through the National Policy to Support LPAs. We have analyzed the limits of planning the state, while the second order mediation, from the regulator thought and the tripartite relationship Capital-Market-State, and we have investigated the contradictions of Local Development opposite the Structural Crisis of Capital, as well as its bases on studies about productive agglomerations and their ideological substrate. In this context, unveil the LPA on the scales of capital and its forms of local control forth the market, while totalizing process, mischaracterizing planning under the uncontrollable character of capital. The expansion of the logic of capital carries the intensification of exploitation of labor. Without autonomy, the peasant suffers from capitalist control of production, labor and land. Finally, we have analyzed the main contradictions of institutionalization of APL through the involvement of familiar production units characterized as small productive centers; the adequacy and enhancement of the productive process for the market; search for sustainable activities; incorporation of productive innovations; the territorial pact and encouraging the named social capital. We have concluded that LPA is part of the Development Project which seeks to alleviate the crisis of capitalism by market regulation. Thus, the state acts as mediator of the capital, the guarantee of private property as a function of capitalist system. Beyond duality between the Keynesian view and the liberal, the analysis of LPA has showed that the State and the market are inseparable in the capital system. In this sense, the quest for production control, land and labor reveals the quest for expansion and domination of territory to the capital, emerged in the insolubility of its structural crisis.
