En gång missbrukare alltid missbrukare? : Anonyma Alkoholisters strategier för nykterhet.

Lucas Moberg, Camilla January 2016 (has links)
Purpose of this study was to investigate the Alcoholics Anonymous strengths and weaknesses, their policy of total abstinence after treatment and strategies for sobriety. The study was conducted by two focus group interviews with women and men living in a twelve-step treatment. Also a single interview was made with a woman from the staff at the women's homes. The results were analyzed with the theories of social mobilization and how group processes affect individuals. The result shows that the key strategies is to work in the twelve steps, going to meetings, and accept the concept of disease to achieve sobriety. Replacing unhealthy social circles is important. Community given in Alcoholics Anonymous give the individual strengths to break out of addiction. The analysis of a group perspective showed that the community has impact on the individual's choice. It thus leads also to change to new sober socializing, given within the movement, which can change behavior.

A Comparison of the Effects of Deep Muscle Relaxation and the Tranquilizing Agent Chlordiazepoxide on Hospitalized Alcoholics

Miller, Jimmie Wayne 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to compare the treatment effects of relaxation therapy and the tranquilizing agent Chlordiazepoxide (Librium). The subjects were 37 hospitalized alcoholics who had been identified as anxious. Elevations of scales two and seven of the MMPI was used as a criterion of anxiety. Thirteen subjects were given Librium, 12 were given a placebo, 12 were given nine sessions of relaxation therapy. Although the results did not indicate significant differences among the three groups, the relaxation group showed the least amount of anxiety at post-testing. It was concluded that relaxation therapy was equal to drug therapy in effectiveness and thus more desirable due to the lack of undesirable side effects. Suggestions for further research were given.

Myelin Gene Expression: Implications for Alcohol Abuse and Dependence

Farris, Sean 31 March 2012 (has links)
Acute behavioral responses to ethanol have predictive value for determining an individual's risk of long-term drinking behavior. Although the neurobiology of alcohol abuse is complex, prior studies from our laboratory demonstrated differential myelin-associated gene expression (MAGE) in medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) as one potential mechanism influencing acute ethanol behaviors between C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice. Our laboratory and others have also shown MAGE is reduced in PFC of alcoholics. Herein, I have extended these findings through expression profiling of PFC into chronic models of ethanol self-administration from non-human primates and mice. Together, these results suggest that regulation of MAGE may be relevant to behavioral phenotypes witnessed in alcoholism. The pathogenesis of alcoholism progresses through multiple stages of drug exposure and withdrawal, however, genetic predisposition is also a major contributing factor for this disease. Therefore, I tested the hypothesis that not only does ethanol have direct effects on MAGE, but also variation in basal MAGE within the PFC is a molecular endophenotype underlying ethanol behavioral sensitivity. Bioinformatics of basal MAGE across the BXD recombinant inbred panel (n=29), derived from B6 and D2 mice, revealed a densely correlated myelin gene network associated with several ethanol behavioral phenotypes. Literature association tools identified Fyn kinase as potential regulator of MAGE. Fyn knockout mice are known to be more sensitive to the sedative-hypnotic properties of ethanol in the loss of righting reflex (LORR) paradigm. Microarray analysis of Fyn knockout mice revealed a significant decrease in MAGE, suggesting MAGE may be an underlying factor for LORR. In support of this premise, microarray analysis of genetic variance in LORR across Inbred Long Sleep and Inbred Short Sleep mice, as well as congenics for the Lore5 quantitative trait locus, also demonstrated an inverse relationship between MAGE and duration of LORR. The hypothesis was further investigated using cuprizone to model demyelination in B6 mice and test them in a battery of acute ethanol behaviors. Cuprizone-treated mice had a significantly greater duration in LORR (p < 0.01), demonstrating that myelin is an important contributor to the genetic variance in LORR. Thus, through genetic, genomic, and pharmacological tools I have ‘molecularly triangulated’ a myelin gene network as a contributing factor influencing acute ethanol behavioral sensitivity. The ability of myelin to alter acute ethanol sensitivity may warrant a prospective study of myelin in humans as a predictive molecular phenotype for an individual’s risk of developing alcohol dependence. Additionally, further genomic dissection of MAGE architecture and associated networks may aid in developing novel pharmacotherapies for an alcohol use disorder. Expressão de AIF, PARP e dos MicroRNAS MIR-145, MIR-210 e MIR-486 associados à apoptose nos corpos cavernosos de ratos submetidos ou não a modelo de alcoolismo crônico / PARP and the microRNAs miR-145, miR-210 e miR-486 Associated to Apoptosis in the Cavernous bodies oh rats submitted or not to chronic alcoholism model

Sarraipo, Vagner Schiavoni 26 November 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Penile erection is a complex neurovascular process initiated through sexual stimulation, which can be physical or psychological factors with action of substances in the vascular endothelium resulting in the satisfactory sexual act. Several factors can negatively interfere in the physiological mechanism of penile erection, consequently leading to erectile dysfunction, such factors as systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and alcoholism. Ethanol is one of the most consumed substances in different societies, becoming, therefore, the target of numerous studies that aim to know about its toxicity. Despite the large association between alcohol consumption and the increased incidence of erectile dysfunction, the molecular mechanisms involved are still poorly understood. Due to abundance, microRNAs have been described involved in various physiological functions of cellular processes, and in addition are involved in many pathophysiological processes, such as erectile dysfunction. Among the cellular processes microRNAs have anti-apoptotic or pro functions. Although the connection of the microRNAs to apoptosis is well established, their function in response to ethanol-induced apoptosis remains largely unknown. Objectives: To evaluate the mechanism of apoptosis, by the expression of AIF and PARP, as well as of its regulatory microRNAs: miR-145, miR-210 and miR-486, in the cavernous bodies of rats submitted to a model of \"semi-voluntary alcoholism\". Material and methods: 12 Wistar rats were divided into two groups: Control (C) and treated with ethanol (A) diluted 20% for seven weeks. Samples of the corpus cavernosum were prepared for morphometric study by Masson\'s trichrome stain, study for protein expression of CASPASE 3 (pro-apoptotic) by immunohistochemistry and study for gene expression of miRNA-21 (anti-apoptotic) in serum and the cavernous tissue. Results: The immunohistochemical analysis showed little positive nuclear marking for the PARP and AIF protein in the corpus cavernosum of the control and ethanol treated groups. After analysis of miR-145, -210 and -486 microRNA expression in the 12 animals studied, no statistically significant differences were found between the control and alcoholized groups. Conclusions: The gene expression of miRNA-145 and miRNA-486 was higher in the animals of the ethanol treated group when compared to the animals in the control group; Gene expression of miRNA - 210 was higher in the control group than in the animals treated with ethanol; A correlation was observed between the protein expression of PARP and AIF and of the -210 miRNA, both with greater positive marking in the control group.

Alcoolismo como processo: da identidade construída à (des) construção da pessoa / Alcoholism as a process: from the built identity to the (des) construction of it

Araujo, Ivanira de Souza 27 February 2008 (has links)
This research presents an investigation on the impact of alcoholism in social relations, mainly in family and work ones. There are 500 million alcohol addicts in the world and 10 to 15% of the population is likely to be dependent one day. The consumption of alcohol and other drugs in work environments has impact on 10 to 14% of workers, which increases hospital assistance and decreases work productivity. The analysis in this investigation starts from AA meetings\' attendance in downtown and surrounding areas in São Paulo city. The theoretical analysis is underpinned by the concepts of identity and socialization. According to Habermas (1983), identity is created by socialization; i.e, by the acquisition of symbolic universals. However, later on, it is sustained and developed by the process of individualization; i.e., by getting independent in relation to social systems. At the beginning, alcohol has the function of social \"modeler\" and it favors social relationship. However, as the process of addiction advances, it dominates and destroys everyday life. As a conclusion, medical discourse influences AA and its participants. There are important differences among AA members, such as, development period of alcohol dependence, kind of occupation, educational and income levels.

Estudo citogenético e molecular de uma população de alcoolistas / Citogenético and molecular study of a population of alcoolistas

Vogel, Carla Ivane Ganz 27 April 2007 (has links)
Alcoholism is a disease consisted of an interaction of genetic and environmental factors, being responsible for serious damage to human health. This way, studies that investigate damage caused by heavy consumption of alcohol as well those that investigate individual susceptibility originated by alcoholism are very important to our society. Chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and polymorphisms to xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes are important tools to these studies. In this work we investigated the possible clastogenic effect of alcohol and the possible association between the occurrence of null genotypes for GSTM1 and GSTT1 enzymes and polymorphisms CYP1A1-MspI, CYP2D6-BstN1 and CYP2E1-PstI with the development of cirrhosis and pancreatitis. Furthermore, we investigate the possible association of TaqA1 polymorphism for DRD2 neurotransmitter in alcoholic. Our sample consisted of alcoholic classified as heavy consumers (>60g alcohol/day). For CA assay we have analysed 26 alcoholic and 22 healthy individuals as control group. For the polymorphism study, 124 alcoholic and 124 healthy individuals were genotyped using PCR and RFLP techniques. Non-smokers alcoholics showed higher mitotic index than nonsmokers controls (p=0,03). Acs frequencies in alcoholics were similar to controls. No risk associations were found between null genotypes for GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes and mutant genotypes for CYP2D6 and CYP2E1 genes and the occurrence of cirrhosis or pancreatic disease. Homozygous mutant for CYP1A1 gene (m2/m2) presented significant risk to development of cirrhosis or pancreatic disease in alcoholic. No significant frequencies were found in the occurrence of A1 allele in alcoholic.

Representações sociais dos enfermeiros de hospital geral frente ao paciente alcoolista e a etiologia para o alcoolismo / The social representations of general hospital nurses front of the alcoholic patient and the etiology in order to alcoholism

Oliveira, Cely de 27 October 2011 (has links)
Identify and analyzed the social representation of General Hospital nurses front of the alcoholic patient and the etiology in order to alcoholism. The subjects of the study were 20 nurses from three General Hospital in a country town of São Paulo (Brazil). The data were collected through interviews self recorded that were transcribed and analyzed by The content Analysis Method, having as category for analysis the theoretical reference of social representation. From analysis of empirical data emerged two categories: 1 - Social representation of nurses front of alcoholic patient. 2- Representation of the etiology in order to alcoholism. The results pointed out that the nurses conceive the alcoholic patient as a sick person, therefore, the alcoholism as a disease. In relation to working with this type of patient, claimed that it is unwieldy, in order that professionals are not prepared to work with this type of patient and that its assistance is permeated by the stigma and prejudice. In the representation of these nurses, the etiology of alcoholism is related to social, psychological, emotional and biological issues. It was concluded that the representation of subjects of the study front of the alcoholic patient and the etiology in order to alcoholism are more tied to common sense than to scientific-technical knowledge, wich ultimately refers to the needs for better preparation and professional training of nurses on the thematic alcoholism, in that the few knowledge about the theme can contribute to a fragmented assistance and guided in matters of moral order that pervade common sense.

"Maturidade emocional e avaliação comportamental de crianças filhas de alcoolistas" / Emotional maturity and assessment behavioral of alcoholics of children

Souza, Joseane de 23 August 2004 (has links)
Parental alcoholism has been pointed by researches as of one risk factor to infant development. Children of alcoholics (COAs) have been found to be more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral problems. The aim of this study was assess children of alcoholics (COAs) in the comparison with children nonalcoholics (Non-COAs) in the aspects: cognitive and emotional, assessed although Human Figure Drawing Test and behavioral assessment by the Behavioral Scale of Rutter A2. Forty children participated of this study with age between: 9 until 12 years old, studied of elementary school, twenty children were children of alcoholics (COAs) and twenty were children of nonalcoholics (Non-COAs). Each of group was compost with 10 boys and 10 girls. The chips of inpatients in the period of 2000 and 2002, in the Geral Hospital (ward psychiatric), were consulted to compose group of alcoholics that had children of 9 until 12 years old. The patients should answer of diagnostic criterion defined by CID 10- Disease International Classification for mental and behavioral disorders due to use of alcohol (F.10.0) without the presence another mental disorder associated. The inclusion criterions to group were: the parents of the children should have conjugal bonding (official or not) and the parents separated should have lived for less five years old with the children and the mother could not have alcoholic problems; children could not have sensorial and neurological disorders and history of the hurt in the head and were not in the psychological and psychiatric treatment. The children of control group (Non-COAs) were identified in the same school in the children of alcoholics were studying. The results showed that children of alcoholics and children nonalcoholics not differentiated in the cognitive aspects, assessed although Human Figure Drawing Test. However, children of alcoholics showed more emotional difficulty, it were assessed in same test. In the behavioral assessment (question filled out by their mother) children of alcoholics showed more behavioral problems than children of nonalcoholics. Children of alcoholics showed difference statistically significant in emotional and behavioral aspects. They showed some psychological characteristics such as: shyness, insecurity, low selfesteem and relationship difficult. Through the opinion of their mother they are: impatient, irritable, agitated, disobedience and dependent. In the gender comparison, the girls of alcoholics showed more emotional and behavioral problems than the girls of nonalcoholics. In this study the girls with alcoholics fathers showed to be more vulnerable than the boys in emotional and behavioral domains.
