Model-Centered Instruction: A Design Research Study to Investigate an Alternative Approach to Patient Education

Parlin, Mary Ann 01 May 2006 (has links)
While medical technology, intervention, and treatment continue to advance, patients often find themselves involved in an increasingly complex healthcare system . Because of this, many patients lack access to the knowledge to facilitate successful navigation or participation in healthcare systems to their best advantage. Patient Ill education that provides experiential information has been shown to reduce anxiety levels and increase patient health outcomes and compliance with medical instructions or recommendations. Given the demonstrated effectiveness of experiential instruction in patient education, Model-Centered Instruction (MCI) has the potential to be an effective instructional design for patient education because it affords the learner experience with systems or models in the presence of instructional augmentation. While MCI design theory is well-documented, it has not been widely implemented and tested at the instructional product level.

Andersson Lakén, Samuel January 2017 (has links)
State and the lobbyists- a study on how non-governmental bills and reports believes that the state should relate to lobbying. This study aims to examine members of parliament’s relation to lobbyists and interest groups, using a qualitative study of non-governmental bills and reports from the constitutional committee. Another focal point of this study is to see if the content of these bills and reports takes democratic values into account. The choice of topic is motivated by the fact that Sweden don’t have any legislation of non-institutionalized lobbying efforts. The nature of the material required a qualitative method focused on ideas, carried out by using dimensions used as analysis tool. The theoretical framework that constituted the analysis dimensions was built on the theory of alternative approach between the state and lobbyists and the democratic values accountability and representation. The empirical material in this study were non-governmental bills and the following reports from the period 2005 to 2015. One of the study’s most important findings was that the content of the bills suggest that the state should receive lobbyist efforts but affect and balance their opportunities of influence. Another finding was that the analysis of the reports claimed that the approach that the state argue for is to receive lobbying efforts, because the state doesn’t prove the opposite. The authors of the bills argued that lobbyism is a good thing for the parliamentary if it’s done in the right form. The political reform to introduce a public record over lobbyists was clearly mentioned in many of the bills. Furthermore, the democratic value accountability was given priority to in all motions, but representation was only found in five of the nine bills that was analyzed in this study.

Ghanem-Larson, Abir 31 January 2011 (has links)
The semantic evolution of the notion of terrorism and the doctrinal birth of the notion of « terrorist act » until its national and international juridical resurgence show that terrorist infringement is based on the presence of a special double intention, sometimes according to an alternative approach, sometimes according to a cumulative approach. This special double intention reveals itself by the objective to terrorize people in order to result to its final aim, that one being a political change. In spite of the depoliticization adopted by international law to take terrorist crime out of the political sphere, this depolicization remains ficticious. The international approach takes into account those two specific intentions of the perpetrator according to an alternative teleological approach, wich means that one of them is enough to call the criminal act a terrorist one. That is right but incomplete. The suitable approach is the cumulative teleological approach. In other words, the terrorist offence is identifiable according to a special double intention of the perpetrator. So, the combination of those two special intentions is needed so that an act can be qualified of "terrorist act".

Fiore Lacelle, Éloïse 09 1900 (has links)
This master thesis is a qualitative study on the advantage of including zootherapy in the social work practice. First, the history of the relationship between humans and animals is exposed, as well as the benefits of the animal on multiple levels in the lives of individuals. Following, the role and the use of the animal in a social work perspective is highlighted. The researcher did qualitative interviews with social workers who integrated or had integrated animals in their social work practice. It can be concluded that zootherapy may be useful on multiple levels to the social work practice results. The animal can assist the client in achieving various goals sought after by the social worker. Furthermore, the animal is helpful in creating and establishing the therapeutic link between the social worker and the client, a critical aspect of counseling. Lastly, a working animal can contribute to community and government programs, helping to improve multiple areas of the individual and societal levels.

An ecosystemic approach to addressing attentional difficulties and heightened motor activity

Van der Westhuizen, Beulah 31 March 2007 (has links)
The study proposes an ecosystemic approach as an intervention for attentional difficulties and heightened motor activity, traditionally known as AD/HD. A literature study of AD/HD is presented first as a psycho-educational frame of reference. The focus then shifts to the symtoms of AD/DH to move closer to the possible underlying causes of these symptoms. In doing so, the focus changes from AD/HD as a diagnosis to attentional difficulties and heightened motor activity as presenting symptoms. Attention and motor activity as constructs are investigated in terms of their neuro-anatomical, neuro-chemical and neuro-physiological aspects. Furthermore, neurodevelopment, physiological stress, neurodevelopmental delay, information processing systems, sensory-motor subsystems and integration as constructs are investigated to understand their role in attention and modulation of motor activity. The study of attention and motor activity and their associated neurological factors motivates an alternative, ecosystemic method of intervention. The proposed approach includes an investigation into internal and external biochemical ecosystems such as environmental pollutants, deficiencies of essential nutrients and genetic deficiencies of the immune system. Other aspects such as time, maturation and neurodevelopment are also considered as well as the gentle interplay between these aspects. The therapeutic intervention includes sound therapy, neurodevelopmental movement activities, EEG neurofeedback and nutrition. Experimental research with a sample population of 12 diagnosed grade 4 and 5 AD/HD learners over a 11 week period was conducted. Statistically significant improvements in aspects of attention were noted using 2 standardised instruments and verification through parent interviews in the first and second experimental groups. Statistically significant improvements were noted in aspects of motor activity (a decline in hyperactive behaviour) in the second experimental group with verification from teacher interviews. Additionally, children in the first experimental group improved significantly more than children in the control group with regards to mathematic skills. The second experimental group showed significant improvement with large effect sizes on reading, mathematic skills and spelling. In conclusion, the statistically significant results obtained with the proposed approach motivates implementation, with improvements in attention, motor activity control and academic performance as a prospect. / Psychology of Education / D. A case study on Maths Dance : The impact of integrating dance and movement in maths teaching and learning in preschool and primary school settings

Evangelopoulou, Polyxeni January 2014 (has links)
The use of kinaesthetic experiences associated with dance to support learning of curricular mathematics has been little represented in the available literature. Maths Dance is an approach to teaching and learning mathematics through dance and movement. The objectives of the study are related to assessing the impact of Maths Dance on students’ cognitive, affective and physical developmental areas in preschool and primary school settings. The investigation of the case study on Maths Dance took place in London, UK, with the participation of four teaching staff members, who were interviewed in detail, and thirty students of Reception, Year 2 and Year 3 classes, out of which eleven students were interviewed. All thirty students were observed once during three Maths Dance sessions, one session per each age group.      Based on a qualitative research approach, the data are analysed and discussed below around seven themes in relation to the theories of constructivism, Dienes’s theory of learning mathematics, Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences and educational neuroscience. According to the main findings, students and teaching staff members express positive attitudes regarding most aspects of the research questions. Specifically, Maths Dance is believed to improve students’ maths skills, critical thinking and creativity, as well as enhance student motivation, socio-emotional and motor skills. The pleasant nature of the activities is also highlighted, an element that is believed to make this method adequate for students of low achievement in maths.  However, the small sample size, in addition to the fact that Maths Dance has recently started being implemented in schools, does not permit generalization of the results.
