Machine-Learning Based Assessment of Cystic Fibrosis

Juan Antonio Kim Hoo Chong Chie (18010987) 28 February 2024 (has links)

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects over 162,428 people worldwide. Currently, assessing cystic fibrosis from medical images requires a trained expert to manually annotate regions in the patient's lungs to determine the stage and severity of the disease. This process takes a substantial amount of time and effort to achieve an accurate assessment.

Recent advancements in machine learning and deep learning have been effective in solving classification, decision-making, identification, and segmentation problems in various disciplines. In medical research, these techniques have been used to perform image analyses that aid in organ identification, tissue classification, and lesion segmentation, which reduces the time required for physicians to analyze medical images. However, these techniques have yet to be widely applied in the assessment of cystic fibrosis.

This thesis describes an automated framework employed to assess the severity and extent of cystic fibrosis. The framework comprises three analysis stages: airways analysis, texture analysis, and lung lesions detection, that are utilized to extract cystic fibrosis features from CT scans, and which are used to assess the severity and extent of cystic fibrosis. The framework achieved an accuracy of 86.96\% in the staging process. The main contribution of this work is the development of a data-driven methodology used to design a quantitative cystic fibrosis staging and grading model.

Factors influencing managers' attitudes towards performance appraisal

Du Plessis, Elizabeth Susan Catherina 02 1900 (has links)
An increasing number of reports indicate that managers are opposed to performance appraisal. It is important to understand why managers have favourable or unfavourable attitudes towards performance appraisal and it is necessary to investigate the causing factors of these attitudes. The aim of this research was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that influence managers’ attitudes towards performance appraisal. This study was conducted within the interpretive research paradigm and situated in a medium-sized organisation within the financial services industry. The sample was purposefully selected and the data were collected through in-depth interviews and naïve sketches. The data were analysed applying Tesch’s descriptive analysis method. The main findings indicated that managers who needed to conduct performance appraisals perceived and experienced performance appraisal as an uncomfortable and emotional process that might cause them to become defensive. Moreover, it was revealed that the managers experienced uncertainties about aspects of performance appraisal, such as the purpose of performance appraisal, what must be measured and frequency of performance appraisal. As a result of such uncertainties, managers might not always have the ability or readiness to conduct performance appraisals, especially when the performance appraisal contains negative performance feedback. Furthermore, the organisational context might put managers in an undesirable situation to distort performance ratings of employees in order to achieve organisational goals or the manager’s personal goals, which in turn influence the attitude of the manager. The findings of the study can assist organisations in influencing managers’ attitudes more positively and in enhancing the overall performance appraisal process. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Indicadores ambientais na discussão da sustentabilidade: uma proposta de análise estratégica no contexto do etanol de cana-de-açúcar no Estado de São Paulo / Environmental indicators in the discussion of sustainability: a proposal for strategic analysis in the context of ethanol from sugar cane in São Paulo

Gomes, Priscila Rodrigues 21 February 2011 (has links)
Currently there is a significant demand of society and managers with information and tools to put into practicing the concept of sustainable development and effectively internalize the policies, plans, programs and interdependence recognition between the various dimensions such as environmental, economic, social and institutional. Increasingly the sustainability issue has brought new variables to discussion and decision making to consider the many variables within the same plane. One of the main motivations for considering the interdependence of these dimensions is the fragility of the development model based on the use of non-renewable energy sources, as well as its impacts on socio-environmental and consequences in the economic area. In this scenario, ethanol from sugar cane as a renewable source of energy emerges as a potential substitute to the use of petroleum-based fuels (in particular gasoline), especially in Brazil, where it is a reality. There is an optimism and encouragement concerning public policies in energy with respect to this source, particularly with policies to encourage its growth. However, there is also society questioning about the real sustainability of this energy source, given the impacts from its cultivation, production and use on a large scale. These questions gain strength when held in São Paulo State, given the representation of activity against Brazil and the world. In this context, it is evident the importance of building tools that will assess the sustainability into an integrated way about ethanol from sugar cane, and inform decision makers, basing public policies for sustainable development. These tools, as well as policies based on them, are in the state of Sao Paulo, necessarily by the Environment Secretary of São Paulo - SMA / SP. The indicators to capture the complexity of development without reducing the significance of each system component appear as such those tools. With the purpose of evaluating the environmental indicators produced by SMA / SP against the principles and good practice criteria in the construction and use of indicators, this study seeks to advance the discussions, particularly in terms of evaluation methods on indicators toward environmental sustainability, within the study context ethanol sugar cane in the state. This study presented a method conducted through interviews and a workshop of experts that pointed out as a result, a set of benchmarks for analysis of these indicators. Even as a research product the built method was applied to one of the main indicators used by the SMA, which is the WQI - Water Quality Index, revealing, through a SWOT analysis, strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats in this indicator to discuss the sustainability of ethanol. Future studies aimed at improving the applications are desirable for improved performance and composition of a proper system to design and evaluate indicators for this activity.

Avaliação química e termoanalítica de cálculos biliares e bile vesicular humana de pacientes do sexo masculino / Chemical evaluation and termoanalítica of human gallstones and gallbladder bile of male patients

Tortorelli, Cláudia Mônica 23 February 2006 (has links)
This work had as goal main to enlarge the study previously related for Mercuri in 2000, now with the chemical and thermoanalytical characterization of gallstones and the human vesicular bile, specifically, of patient of the masculine sex. For both the kinds of characterization were used several techniques, as: (a) Elementary analysis (AE), for contents determination of C, H and N. (b) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), with objective of verifying the absorption bands in the IV and thus identify some substances that do part of these materials. (c) X-rays diffraction (DRX), to identify present crystalline species formations in the gallstones sample. (d) Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS), for some metals content determination such as: Cd, Pb and Cu. (e) Nuclear Magnetic resonance (RMN), to ratify the cholesterol presence and to remove the hypothesis of have ergosterol in the sample and (f) TG/DTG and DSC applied to the gallstones and bile samples thermal behavior study. This work allowed to conclude that: some universe gallstones kinds of patient of the masculine sex that were studied could be inserted in the proposed classification previously, however, five of these samples did not case in none of these groups, suggesting, with that, the addition of new groups. It verified, also, that the gallstones percentage formatted for cholesterol is smaller for this class of patient. In two gallstones samples were found CaCO3 crystallized as aragonite, other indicated the calcium phosphate presence and in two of these samples were found a Pb high content. In the biles case, six samples indicated presence of NaCl (halita) and their one indicated, also, the cholesterol presence.

Análise pluridimensional da sustentabilidade do ciclo de vida de um sistema estrutural de cobertura em madeira de Pinus: caso assentamento rural Pirituba II / Multidimensional sustainability analysis of a structural roof system life cycle made of Pinus wood: case Pirituba II rural settlement

Egas, Leonardo 25 June 2008 (has links)
This paper is enclosed in the discussion of a more sustainable building systems, seeking to study how the civil construction is acting out in the present time and offering alternatives to reduce its impacts. In the last decades this theme has been partially approached, with new technology propositions, however, without coming along with studies that assess the existing complex relations in the reality to solve these problems. The social, economical, political and cultural experiences usually not approached in most studies, mostly are the ones responsible for the current levels of consumerism and production of leftovers and emission, thus necessarily becoming the target of studies that connect them to the technical and environmental matters, regarding to the gains and losses of sustainability, to propose new building systems and procedures ables to bring up a more sustainable scenario in some contexts and dimension. The aim of this paper is to bring about and analyze the points of higher and lower sustainability in the structural roof system life cycle in nail-laminated wood beams made of 3rd class quality Pinus, in the environmental, social, economical, political and cultural dimensions, assessing its relations of gains and losses along the process. The work was divided in two big steps, having the first one step a bibliography revision, collecting data about the current sustainable methods and identifying their limits and potentialities, where it revealed that no studies has covered the different dimensions in a satisfactory way, focusing only on the environment. Following, to become closer to an acceptable multidimensional analysis, the life cycle assessment (LCA) was chosen as the most indicated method, connected to the Ethos indicators, the other raised variables from the literature and the new tool created to organize and viewing the data, resulting in the proposed method, the Multidimensional Life Cycle Assessment (MLCA). In the second step, it was used the method developed in the singular case study, the life cycle of the structural system of naillaminated beams, developed in the Pirituba II rural settlement, where the impact generated across the chain was raised. The achieved results showed that the use of wood in a cooperative process, with prefabricated parts in the cooperative carpentry workshop can bring positive impacts, since it is a renewable resource and also capable to capture \'CO IND.2\' from the atmosphere, to generate energy from its leftovers, creating works and revenues hence bringing quality of life for workers and the community. The work progresses to the analysis of relations in the sustainability gains and losses, suggesting the points of major or minor fragility in the process and dimensions, thus allowing changes of posture facing these matters and helping out in the choices of more sustainable building systems.

p-Toluenossulfatos de terras raras hidratados: síntese, caracterização e estudo termoanalítico em diferentes atmosferas / Hydrated rare earth p-toluenesulfonates: synthesis, characterization and thermoanalytical study in different atmospheres

Santos, Arnaud Victor dos 18 September 1998 (has links)
This work consists in the thermoanalytical investigation of hydrated rare earth p-toluenesulfonates, considering the relative aspects of the dehydration step, thermal decomposition of the anhydrous salts and altemative methods for preparation of the oxysulfides. The compounds were prepared in aqueous solution, by reaction of p-toluenesulfonic acid and basic carbonates. The products of the reactions presented general formula TR(C7H7SO3)3.xH2O, TR3+ = La - Lu and Y, and x = 2 - 7. This stoichiometry was established through elemental analysis and TG data. The p-toluenesulfonates were characterized and investigated thermoanalytically. The study of the thermal behaviour of these compounds was accomplished using TG/DTG in air, N2, CO2, air + CO2 and H2 + Ar dynamic atmospheres with heating rate of 10 °C min-1. The dehydration step is independent of the atmosphere employed. The thermal decomposition processes of the anhydrous salts in air, CO2, air + CO2 lead to fonnation of oxysulfates with different stoichiometries. The results indicated that thermal stability of anhydrous salts and oxysulfates decreases with ionic TR3+ radii. The same was not evidenced in the N2 atmosphere plateaus indicative of thermally stables intermediate compounds were not observed. TG data in H2 + Ar atmosphere indicated the formation of dioxysulfide (TR2O2S). This product was heated in air atmosphere, showing gain of mass characteristic of oxidation to oxysulfate. The thermal events were evidenced in DSC curves by endothermic and exothermic peaks, and they are in agreement with the weight changes indicated in TG/DTG curves. For some compounds kinectic parameters were determined for the dehydration step, using TG/DTG and DSC dynamic methods. TG curves showed some overlaped events, evidencing complexes thermal decomposition processes with simultaneously evoluation of several volatile products. In these case, TG/DTG-GC/MS experiments were made for the detection of these volatile ones.

Painful Ideals : Young Swedish women´s ideal sexual situations and experiences of pain during vaginal intercourse / Smärtsamma Ideal : Unga svenska kvinnors ideala sexuella situationer och erfarenheter av smärta vid samlag

Elmerstig, Eva January 2009 (has links)
Many young women today are concerned about their sexual health; an increasing number of them consult gynaecologists, youth centres (YCs) and general practitioners with vulvar problems such as painful sensations associated with vaginal intercourse (VIC). It is known that some women continue to have VIC despite pain. Theoretically, repeated painful VIC might elicit vaginistic reactions, which may increase the pain and induce vicious circles. Since many clinicians and researchers nowadays notice that pain during VIC often starts at young age, it is important to investigate how pain during VIC starts and is maintained in younger populations. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate young women’s experiences of ideal sexual situations and pain during VIC. Women aged 13-22 years participated in our studies, which used both quantitative (study I and IV) and qualitative (study II and III) methods. For paper I, a questionnaire was developed and used in a YC sample (n=300); informants for paper II were selected from that sample to participate in qualitative interviews (n=16). Another qualitative interview study for paper III with a complimentary research question was conducted in a different YC sample (n=14). For paper IV, a questionnaire was developed based on the results from study I, II and III to test the hypotheses derived from study II in a sample of female high school students (n=1566). The findings revealed that 65% of the women reported pain related to first VIC. Among those who reported VIC during the previous month, 49% had experienced pain and/or discomfort during VIC during that same period (paper I). In paper IV, 47% of the women reported experience of pain and/or discomfort during VIC, and among those, 47% continued to have VIC, 22% feigned enjoyment, and 33% omitted telling the partner about their pain. In paper II, the women’s reasons for continuing to have VIC despite pain were: striving to reach their ideal image of a woman, characterized as always willing to have VIC; being perceptive of their partner’s sexual needs; and being able to satisfy their partner. In paper IV the hypotheses derived from study II were confirmed and showed, for example that a significantly higher proportion of women who continue to have VIC despite pain than women who did not had difficulty refusing sex when the partner wants it, felt inferior to the partner during sex, regarded the partner’s satisfaction as more important than their own, felt dissatisfaction with their sex life, and feigned enjoyment despite pain. In a multivariate model, continuing to have VIC despite pain was associated with feelings of being inferior to the partner during sex (adjusted OR 1.82; CI 1.10-3.02), dissatisfaction with their own sex lives (adjusted OR 1.76; CI 1.14-2.72) and feigning enjoyment while having pain (adjusted OR 7.45; CI 4.37-12.69). The major reason for continuing to have VIC was that the partner’s enjoyment was prioritized higher than their own (paper IV). In paper III, we found that women without pain during VIC also felt pressure from social norms and demands and had experienced partners “driving their own race”. However, they managed to some extent to resist these unequal gender norms because of their urge to experience pleasure. In conclusion, pain during VIC is a common complaint among young Swedish women, and a high proportion of them continue having VIC despite pain. The women’s notion of prioritizing the partners´ enjoyment before their own illustrates that unequal gender regimes affect young women’s (hetero)sexuality negatively.

Potential For Popular Dissemination: An Analysis Of The &amp / #8216 / ideal Home&amp / #8217 / Discourse In The Weekly Yedigun Magazine

Usalp, Melike 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
POTENTIAL FOR POPULAR DISSEMINATION: AN ANALYSIS OF THE &amp / #8216 / IDEAL HOME&amp / #8217 / DISCOURSE IN THE WEEKLY YEDiG&Uuml / N MAGAZINE TUNCER, Melike Usalp M.Arch. in Architecture, Department of Architecture Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Cengizkan April 2006, 179 pages The social transformations beginning by the end of the nineteenth century and the political and economic changes of the Early Republican Era (1923-1938) and the Transition Era (1938-1950) had important effects on Turkish architecture. The effects of the &amp / #8216 / new&amp / #8217 / and &amp / #8216 / ideal&amp / #8217 / life accelerated by the establishment of the new democratic nation state brought rapid changes and transformations to all aspects of life including housing. This study deals with the housing discourse in Yedig&uuml / n magazine which was published weekly during the single party era of the Republic. It was published weekly from 1933 to 1950 and was followed by a wide portion of the society, as an important popular magazine of the era. Its effort to present articles, pictures and news on housing and decoration for 17 years, with only short interruptions, makes it necessary to investigate these popular architectural products. In this study, it is claimed that the visual and the written material of Yedig&uuml / n magazine, related to house, is part of the theme of what is called &amp / #8216 / ideal home&amp / #8217 / . The investigation and analysis of the &amp / #8216 / ideal home&amp / #8217 / 2 discourse in Yedig&uuml / n magazine as a whole is useful in improving one&amp / #8217 / s understanding of the modernization practices of the newly established Republic of Turkey. Two methods are used in order to understand the visual and written materials in the magazine: the first one is the Visual Analysis Method described in the book &amp / #8216 / Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Analysis&amp / #8217 / by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leuween. The aim by using this method is to decipher the relationship of the representative medium with the reader, treat the material as a whole. The second method is the analysis of the whole material in the context in relation with the architectural, political, social and economical events of the period, to investigate the construction processes of the discourse. Therefore, this study aims at understanding the action-reaction potential of the tools of the &amp / #8216 / ideal home&amp / #8217 / discourse of the Yedig&uuml / n magazine, by deciphering the visual and written material. Some results of the thesis show us that / both Arkitekt and Yedig&uuml / n magazines follow the agenda of the foreign publications in a similar way / the foundation for a sort of &amp / #8216 / collective union&amp / #8217 / namely &amp / #8216 / housing cooperatives&amp / #8217 / was set, by keeping individual home acquisition constantly on the agenda / problems of the new and modern life were tried to be addressed by Yedig&uuml / n as well as in the current architectural publications / these home presentations may be judged as &amp / #8216 / a catalogue of idealized ideas&amp / #8217 / or &amp / #8216 / two dimensional advice manual&amp / #8217 / , for early Republican Era home icons.
