ManifestaÃÃes avaliativas de engajamento no gÃnero relatÃrio de pesquisa produzido por alunos do ensino mÃdio / Evaluative and engagement markers in research report genre produced by high school students

Gerlylson Rubens dos Santos Silva 18 March 2016 (has links)
Inserted into a context of interventions that aims to restructure the high school curriculum, Cearà public schools pride themselves with the arrival of an approach that brings new practices of literacy. This new approach, named Core Labor, Research and Social Policies (NÃcleo de Trabalho, Pesquisa e PrÃticas Sociais â NTPPS), intends to develop socio-emotional skills of students in order to use scientific research as an educational principle in high school learning process. Within this context, this research seeks to verify the state of scientific literacy (MILLER, 1983; OSBONER, 2002; SANTOS 2007) of NTPPS students through the evaluative expressions of Engagement (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005) mobilized in Theoretical Framework section of their research reports. The study explains the association we conjecture that exists between certain dialogic choices assumed by the producer of the report and the state of scientific literacy evidenced by these linguistic marks. The corpus of this work, collected in July 2015, consists of thirty-six Theoretical Frameworks of scientific research reports produced by first-year students of high school. We analyze the data identifying the dialogic choices adopted by the producers and the inter-subjective level of engagement assumed in the construction of argumentative positions. The material revealed the presence of 810 evaluative expressions of Engagement, 222 classified as monoglossics and 588 classified as heteroglossics that pass by all the subcategories found in this subsystem classification network. More than a half of evaluations (60,5%) concerns of Dialogic Contractions while 39,5% enter in the expansive scope of dialogue. We observed that 61,5% of the Theoretical Frameworks present a range of linguistic marks of evaluation that reveal a minimum criteria of suitability in levels of engagement with the text, presenting appropriate evidences of authorial role. The analysis of the material allowed us to infer that the NTTPS intervention has shown positive results in the development of scientific literacy skills of high school students. The discursive practices ruled by scientific methodology, that had sporadically been worked in schools are, nowadays, parts of the school community as a belonging exercise of a large portion of students. We observe the consequences of this in their research reports, which we can view as representative products of the process of scientific literacy acquisition.

Costa, Vitor Hugo Chaves 05 March 2010 (has links)
This research investigates how homoerotic males represent themselves in personal ads from internet. Thus, the theoretical background was Appraisal Theory, Martin & White (2005), discoursive studies from Bakhtin s Circle, Cultural Gender Studies and Social Representation Theory, Moscovici (1981). Appraisal Theory explains the evaluative aspect of language, three semantic fields (affect, appreciation and judgement). According to Bakhtin s Circle Studies, language is a social phenomena. Cultural Gender Studies there is Male Domination and Heterosexism in our social cultural context. Social representations are entities of mental, social, cultural and historical order, constructed collectively, making possible to social groups to perceive, to understand and to act on the world (MOSCOVICI, 2003). It was analyzed 308 personal ads from the following sites: Almas Gêmeas (10), Super Encontros (25), Manhunt (122), GLS Planet (81) e Viva Street (70). The analysis was based on three dimensional model to discourse from Fairclough (2001), which comprises of social practice, discursive practice and text. In text analysis, it was explored the semantic fields of Appraisal Theory (affect, judgement and appreciation), which was used to define how the advertisers represented themselves. The main categories had been: affect (romantic, promiscuous, antieffeminate, interracials, intraracials, friends, cautious and adventurers), appreciation (bears, shaved, novices, experts, olds, fits, unfits, whites and afros) and judgment (effeminates, discretes, actives, passives, versatiles and serious).

Twelve Certain Men: The Impact of Emotional Appraisals on Juror Decision-Making

Joy, Stephen W. 03 July 2013 (has links)
Our jury system is predicated upon the expectation that jurors engage in systematic processing when considering evidence and making decisions. They are instructed to interpret facts and apply the appropriate law in a fair, dispassionate manner, free of all bias, including that of emotion. However, emotions containing an element of certainty (e.g., anger and happiness, which require little cognitive effort in determining their source) can often lead people to engage in superficial, heuristic-based processing. Compare this to uncertain emotions (e.g., hope and fear, which require people to seek out explanations for their emotional arousal), which instead has the potential to lead them to engage in deeper, more systematic processing. The purpose of the current research is in part to confirm past research (Tiedens & Linton, 2001; Semmler & Brewer, 2002) that uncertain emotions (like fear) can influence decision-making towards a more systematic style of processing, whereas more certain emotional states (like anger) will lead to a more heuristic style of processing. Studies One, Two, and Three build upon this prior research with the goal of improving methodological rigor through the use of film clips to reliably induce emotions, with awareness of testimonial details serving as measures of processing style. The ultimate objective of the current research was to explore this effect in Study Four by inducing either fear, anger, or neutral emotion in mock jurors, half of whom then followed along with a trial transcript featuring eight testimonial inconsistencies, while the other participants followed along with an error-free version of the same transcript. Overall rates of detection for these inconsistencies was expected to be higher for the uncertain/fearful participants due to their more effortful processing compared to certain/angry participants. These expectations were not fulfilled, with significant main effects only for the transcript version (with or without inconsistencies) on overall inconsistency detection rates. There are a number of plausible explanations for these results, so further investigation is needed.

Drivers of Negative Customer Engagement : A quantitative study testing a model of negative customer engagement and its proposed antecedents

Ludwig, Månsson, Ossian, Hempel January 2022 (has links)
Abstract Purpose - The purpose of this study is to extend the current understanding of NCE and its antecedents. Design/methodology/approach - A deductive approach was used to confirm the proposed model of NCE using structural equation modeling. Data was collected online using self-selection questionnaires, resulting in 252 responses used in the quantitative analysis. Seven hypotheses were tested in the analysis.  Findings - The primary findings of the study is that perceived injustice acts as an antecedent of cognitive and affective NCE, which in turn drive behavioral NCE. Accordingly, the proposed tri-dimensional framework of NCE, consisting of a cognitive, affective, and behavioral component, was supported. Negative service quality disconfirmation was not supported as an antecedent of NCE.  Originality/value - The originality of the paper lies in the testing of NCE and the proposed drivers as a unique construct, which has not previously been tested in quantitative research.

WHAT'S THE LINE? THE INFLUENCE OF NUMERICAL LITERACY ON THE PERCEPTIONS AND EVALUATIONS OF SPORT ODDS

Lopez, Colin, 0000-0001-5975-3523 January 2022 (has links)
In 2018, the United States Supreme Court overturned PASPA, a law which had previously deemed sports betting illegal. Following this ruling, states have already or have begun passing legislation which legalizes sport betting. As legalization continues to sweep the nation, an untapped domain of research has emerged. From a sport management perspective, there is a new, highly lucrative sport industry with which there is minimal research. The main purpose of this research project is to examine how bet presentation influences consumer behavior related to sports gambling. Specifically, the role that bet format presentation has on consumers’ willingness to bet and the amount they are willing to bet. Additionally, the potentially mediating effects of numeracy and team identification were examined. Participants (N=703) were recruited from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, as these locations natively use different forms of bet presentation (American, fractional, and decimal). This study utilized a Latin square experimental design that examined whether participants were willing to bet more money when shown American odds first compared to fractional odds first. Further, evidence was provided demonstrating the positive mediating influence of team identification, and the influence of subjective numeracy. Practically, the results from this study can inform sports betting organizations, sports betting consumers, as well as government and industry regulators. Theoretically, knowledge is contributed to the domains of sport management, behavioral pricing, and appraisal theory literature. / Tourism and Sport

“600+ F-bombs Per Season” : An appraisal analysis of various fucks in The Wire and their translations

Kide, Markus January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines how clauses containing variants of fuck are translated to Swedish subtitles in HBO’s The Wire. The aim is to explore what words are used in the translations, as well as to discern whether or not any discrepancies occur between the source language and target language clauses. The main tool to discern the differences between the original and translated clauses is Appraisal Theory, with a focus on the subsystems Attitude and Graduation. Appraisal Theory aids in this case to discern in what way the discrepancies between the source language clause, and the target language clause, manifest themselves. To deepen the examination of the discrepancies, offensiveness is also considered in the analysissince fuck is a swear word. The analysis shows that most discrepancies occur when fuck is used figuratively either as a verb or an adjective. The clearest discrepancy of the two is shownin clauses containing the adjective fucking, due to the number of cases when the target language clause did not feature an adjective, and thus, did not feature a corresponding swear word. Aspects of either attitude, graduation or offensiveness are at times sacrificed to maintain semantics, as well as to stay within the logistical limitations of audiovisual translation.

Literatura boa é que eu gosto; ruim a que eu não gosto: fóruns de discussão literária da rede social ORKUT e a Teoria da Valoração uma análise crítica / Representations about literary quality expressed by Internet users that interact in discussion foruns on Orkut and appraisal therory

Gisele Oliveira de Abreu 18 April 2011 (has links)
This dissertation, in the area of Linguistics, is developed within the theoretical frameworks of Critical Discourses Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH: 1989; 2003) AND Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1970;1973) and investigates representations about literally quality expressed by internet users that interact in discussion forums on Orkut. Adopting analytical categories within the subsystem of Attitude, from Appraisal Theory (MARTIN ; WHITE, 2005), we examine how readers express their ideas on, or representations about, the concept of literary quality and investigate the ideology behind such representations. The concept of ideology in this research is from Thompson (2009), who argues that it must be understood in association with the notions of hegemony and power, ie, ideology necessarily establishes and maintains relationships of domination, by reproducing a social order that favors individuals and dominant groups. The corpus of this research is made up of three samples collected between 07.15.2009 and 01.05.2010 corresponding to a discussion started in a community organized around discussions of literature. . SAMPLE 1 introduces the topic Leitura difícil é sinal de qualidade? from the community Literature; SAMPLE 2 takes, as a starting point, the topic Qualidade do texto literário, from the community Discutindo... literatura, and, finally, SAMPLE 3 introduces the topic O que é um 'bom' texto literário para você, from the community Literatura. Each sample has consistencies and differences in the representations expressed by the participants and these were analyzed. Our focus is on how ideologies permeate participants discourses, according to the values they assign to aspects of the literary text. Online discussion forums on Orkut were chosen because the interactions in social networks represent a new element of social practices and therefore are considered relevant sites of investigation. Probing into how literature, the object of academic study, is discussed in cyber space is justified on the grounds that there are hardly any studies of how literature is represented outside institutional spaces. Results obtained in this study suggest that internet users articulate hegemonic academic discourse in their discussions of literature, but they also express specific attitudes towards particular texts and writers (codified as feelings of pleasure or displeasure in discussions of reading practices). These results suggest that in online discussions of literature readers feel free to express their personal reactions to text, given the characteristics of this discussion forum

Writing with an Attitude : Appraisal and student texts in the school subject of Swedish

Folkeryd, Jenny W. January 2006 (has links)
Learning in school is in many respects done through language. However, it has been shown that the language of school assignments is seldom explicitly discussed in school. Writing tasks are furthermore assigned without clear guidelines for how certain lexical choices make one text more powerful than another. The present study is a contribution to a linguistic and pedagogical discussion of student writing. More specifically the focus is on the use of evaluative language in texts written by students in the school subject of Swedish in grades 5, 8 and 11. The major investigations of the study have been accommodated within the theoretical framework of Appraisal. An overview is given of the language resources in the student texts for constructing emotion, judging behavior in ethical terms and valuing objects aesthetically. Another question addressed is that of how attitudinal meaning is intensified, thus creating greater or lesser degrees of positivity or negativity associated with the feelings. The results show that manifestations of attitude are found in practically all texts in the study. However, variations are noted in relation to different genres, age, proficiency level, language background and gender. A contribution of the study in relation to the theoretical framework upon which it draws is an extension of the system of Attitude as well as an identification of different patterns in the use of attitudinal resources. These patterns are furthermore discussed in relation to how students talk about their own written production in terms of text movability. Results indicate that students with a high degree of text movability also use attitudinal resources to a large extent. It is argued that applying the linguistic tool of Appraisal can facilitate a discussion of how to make one aspect of the hidden curriculum more visible, namely, how to write with an Attitude.

Trädgårdsboken som text 1643–2005 / The Garden Book as Text 1643–2005

Nord, Andreas January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the handbook as a multimodal resource from a reader perspective, with the material consisting of 32 Swedish handbooks on gardening from 1643 to 2005. The study draws theoretically on social semiotics and multimodal discourse analysis, as well as dialogism. There is an emphasis on the addressivity of the text, which is taken as a starting point for tracing signs of the intended text use in the design of the texts. The analysis is meaning-based, with the focus placed on functional features in the design of the texts. The first part of the study considers the reading goals afforded by the thematizations conveyed in titles, headings and text type patterns. The core function of these texts turns out to be action orientation, although the more recent books often include sections oriented towards other goals, like shaping individual aesthetic taste. The second part illustrates how the multimodal cohesive patterns in the books afford non-linear reading paths and make the texts searchable, which is enhanced by the presence of devices such as indices and tables of contents. Concentrating on six of the books, the third part of the study maps out the role of the reader that is naturalized by the design of the text, drawing on appraisal theory, and shows the strong, authoritative role taken by the authorial voice. The evaluative patterns naturalize a fact-seeking reading. However, the most recent book, from 1996, emphasizes emotions to a greater extent, naturalizing a parallel reading that invokes sensory experience. The conclusion drawn is that the core characteristics of the handbooks are action orientation, searchability and factuality. As different parallel functions in recent books are discerned, a tendency towards diversity and multifunctionality is described. The range of semiotic resources has also expanded, it is noted, and there is growing support for the view of a tendency towards the visualisation of written texts.
