Calculating the risk of infection of mycobacterium tuberculosis in endemic settingsJohnstone-Robertson, Simon Peter 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The annual risk of infection (ARI), a measure of recent transmission, has been described as the most
important parameter in tuberculosis (TB) epidemics. Nevertheless, mounting evidence suggests all
factors contributing to TB transmission are not yet completely understood. This research was
performed to investigate the role various parameters, e.g. overcrowding, period of infectivity,
ventilation, and infectivity of source cases, play in TB transmission. An established airborne
transmission risk model, the Wells-Riley equation (WRE), was modified to account for scenarios
where unknown numbers of infectious individuals may be present. Subsequently, the ARI for three
indoor locations conducive to TB transmission were calculated. Two locations (households and
minibus taxis) were identified in a social mixing survey conducted within a South African
community where TB is endemic as a part of this research. The third location (prison) was
identified in an earlier independent study in the same community. The impact various interventions
could have in reducing the ARI associated with each location was explored. Poor ventilation, severe
overcrowding, extended exposure periods, and high incidence rates contributed to high TB
transmission risks in each location. The household-associated ARI was related to the number of
resident adults. Current TB control programs will only reduce the ARI if household ventilation
levels are improved simultaneously. Similar reductions in the ARI could be achieved by trebling
current ventilation levels or by separating child and adult sleeping areas. Neighbouring households
can also contribute substantially to the ARI. The minibus taxi-associated ARI for drivers and
commuters was considerable but readily reduced by opening windows or keeping the fresh-air fan
on. Reducing TB case prevalence through active or passive case-finding would reduce the ARI
substantially. The prison-associated ARI was proportional to levels of overcrowding. No single
intervention, such as improved ventilation, decreased lock-up time, or improved case-finding,
would decrease the ARI substantially, but concurrent implementation of all of them to meet national
or international standards would. This research shows TB is not only transmitted in epidemics by
highly infectious TB cases, but that any TB case, no matter how infectious, has the potential to
infect susceptible people under the right conditions.
belangrikste parameter in tuberkulose- (TB-)epidemies bestempel. Nietemin dui toenemende
brongevalle – in TB-verspreiding.
aansteeklike individue moontlik aanwesig is.
navorsing uitgewys in sosialevermengingsopname in Suid-Afrikaanse gemeenskap waar TB
endemies is. Die derde ruimte (gevangenisse) is uitgewys in vroeëre onafhanklike studie in
dieselfde gemeenskap.

The Effect of Pre-Cure Bracket Movement on the Shear Bond Strength of Metal BracketsRoberts, Thomas Luther, IV 01 January 2007 (has links)
The effect on shear bond strength of bracket movement after seating the brackets and before light curing has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of linear and rotational pre-cure bracket movement on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. 100 extracted human maxillary premolars were divided into 5 groups of 20 teeth each. The control group was bonded with no pre-cure bracket movement, and test groups were bonded with pre-cure bracket movement of 2 mm, 4 mm, 45¢ª or 180¢ª. Debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine. Results were analyzed by ANOVA. Weibull survival analysis was used to determine the force required to produce a 5% bracket failure rate. Differences in the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) were analyzed by chi-square. No significant differences between groups were found for the mean shear bond strength or Weibull estimates. ARI scores differed significantly.

Al-Juwaynī & Al-Ghazālī as theologians : with special reference to (Al-irshād) & (Al-iqtisād)Bisar, M. A. R. January 1953 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to expound and compare the theological aspect of the thought of al-Juwaynī and al-G̲h̲azālī; we shall seek to discover similarities and differences between them in their methods and in their opinions on identical problems. There are indeed several aspects from which the thought of these two men may be studied - the philosophical, the juristic, and the theological aspects. And their contribution to theology is an extremely important page in the history of the As̲h̲ʻarīyah school.

Scholastic traditional minimalism : a critical analysis of Intra-Sunni sectarian polemicsIslam, Tajul January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is an analytical exploration of the influence of medieval theology on contemporary scholastic traditionalist polemics within Sunni Islam. Intra-Sunni sectarian polemics as an emerging area of study is relatively untouched as opposed to sectarian violence. A detailed mapping of the theological terrain from the genesis of Sunni ‘orthodoxy’ and the perennial tensions within the classical theological tradition and how they have manifested parochially into the contemporary scholastic traditionalist trends of the Barelwi, Deobandi, Ahl-i-Ḥadīth and Wahhābī within the backdrop of the Sufi-Salafi contestation of Sunni authenticity is timely. Concern regarding growing extremism prompted Muslim Ulama, academics and political leaders to create unity initiatives such as the Amman Message and the Sunni Pledge in dealing with this problem and also delineating ‘orthodoxy’. The theological basis for these neo-credos can be explained as doctrinal ‘minimalism’. Minimalism is a growing social construction of scholastic traditionalists through which the warring factions are attempting to salvage the historical continuity with ‘orthodoxy’ and placate Sunni infighting. The thesis aims to examine the theological veracity of the minimalism project and explore its doctrinal, methodological and ethical facets. Polemicism and excommunication is the current state of affairs within Sunni theological discourse. Minimalism is deemed as the antidote to this problem.

Exploring the Differences Between Pre-Service Teachers' Analyses of Various Informal Reading Inventory Results in the Elementary GradesMiller, Tara A. 01 December 2015 (has links)
Reading is a fundamental skill in our modern society; being able to read with comprehension and fluency is an important skill in all core academic subjects. Reading teachers are charged with the task to analyze student data in order to drive their instructional decisions. Informal Reading Inventories (IRIs) are one type of an informal reading assessment that teachers can use in the classroom to learn about student reading behaviors and drive instruction. Informal Reading Inventories assess fluency and comprehension. Research suggests that fluency and comprehension have a reciprocal relationship; meaning, if you improve one skill, you improve the other skill simultaneously (DeVries, 2011). This study explored how pre-service teachers, college students in an education program, and in-service teachers, veteran teachers, analyzed data from various IRIs. This study also explored how three separate IRIs, the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI), the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI), and the Analytical Reading Inventory (ARI), compared to one another. There were four participants in this study: two undergraduate students in an elementary education program reading class and two veteran classroom teachers. This study found that the grade level readability of the passages are inconsistent with the reading level they claim to be. An inconsistency like this is something to note as many teachers only use these resources on which they were trained during their college education. This study also found that the length of the IRI passages had an effect on the student’s words correct per minute (WCPM); the longer the passage, the lower the WCPM. This is probably due to the fact that students need more time to process a passage for the sake of comprehension.

Objective: to describe and analyze the perception of predisposing factors to Acute Respiratory Infections in mothers of preschoolers in a community of Pomalca. Method: Qualitative, descriptive research, in a sample of 12 mothers of preschoolers from the Combo community, determined by data saturation and redundancy, sampling was non-probabilistic for convenience. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview, which was validated by expert judgment and by a pilot test on 2 mothers who met the inclusion criteria. The data
were processed by the thematic content analysis method. Results: 4 categories were obtained: identification of individual factors, recognition of factors in the home, also, identification of family factors and recognition of environmental factors as a predisposing factor. Conclusion: For the most part, mothers have an adequate perception and recognize the various factors that predispose children under 5 years of age to having an ARI. They correctly recognize within
family factors, the presence of a family member who smokes due to the toxic substances that preschoolers can inhale; But there is an incorrect perception about the association of passive smoking (inhaling cigarette smoke) with developing TB.

Framgångsrik hållbarhetskommunikation - vad är det? : En tematisk analys av Naturkompaniet, Systembolaget och MAX Burgers hållbarhetskommunikation på InstagramOskarsson, Jessica, Markén, Matilda January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to investigate how companies perceived as sustainable by consumers engage in sustainability communication on social media. An abundance of information is common in today's digitized society - how do you as a company push through the noise - especially, with a serious message that does not belong on social media? The basis for determining which companies succeed in their sustainability communication is based on the Sustainable Brand Index Report from 2022. The selection and criteria resulted in three companies from three different industries for our analysis: Naturkompaniet, Systembolaget and MAX Burgers. We have reviewed all companies' Instagram and after the selection, 5 Instagram posts from each company are analyzed. The analysis is based on theories about sustainable communication, emotions and cognitive load on the part of the recipient. Models that are explained and intended to be the basis for results and analysis are the Affect–reason–involvement model (ARI model) and the Communication via Syncretic and Analytic Cognition Scale (CASC scale) as well as the Limited Capacity Model of Motivated Mediated Message Processing (LC4MP). To answer the research question "How do Systembolaget, Naturkompaniet and MAX Burgers present their sustainability communication on Instagram?" and the sub-question "How do Systembolaget, Naturkompaniet and MAX Burgers use emotional aspects and how do they take into account the recipients' cognitive load in their sustainability communication on Instagram?" in relation to the theories, we use a thematic content analysis. The analysis resulted in four overarching themes found: Behavior Change, Memorable, Encouraging and Serious Undertone. The conclusion is that companies that carry out successful sustainability communication present their messages in a simple way which is easy to understand, often with humorous elements and relatable factors.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of Coca-Cola® and Schweppes®-Limón on bond strength, adhesive remnant and microleakage beneath brackets. To examine by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) the effect of these drinks on intact and sealed enamel.
Methods: 120 brackets were bonded to bovine incisors and divided into: 1)Control-group; 2)Coca-Cola®; 3)Schweppes®-Limón. The teeth were submerged in the drinks 3 times/day (15 minutes) during fifteen days. Shear bond strength was measured with a universal test machine, and adhesive remnant using image analysis equipment. Microleakage at the enamel-adhesive and adhesive-bracket interfaces was detected using methylene blue. 108 teeth were used to examine by SEM the effect of the drinks on intact and sealed enamel.
Results: No significant differences were found in bond strength and adhesive remnant between groups. Microleakage at the enamel-adhesive interface for Coca-Cola® and Schweppes®-Limón was significantly greater than for the control. At the adhesive-bracket interface microleakage was significantly greater with Coca-Cola® than with the control whilst microleakage with Schweppes®-Limón did not differ significantly from either Coca-Cola® or the control. The drinks produced enamel erosion and loss of adhesive.
