Adaptive algorithms for poromechanics and poroplasticity / Algorithmes adaptatifs pour la poro-mécanique et la poro-plasticité

Riedlbeck, Rita 27 November 2017 (has links)
In this Ph.D. thesis we develop equilibrated flux a posteriori error estimates for poro-mechanical and poro-plasticity problems.Based on these estimations we propose adaptive algorithms for the numerical solution of problems in soil mechanics. The first chapter deals with linear poro-elasticity problems.Using equilibrated $H({rm div})$-conforming flux reconstructions of the Darcy velocity and the mechanical stress tensor, we obtain a guaranteed upper bound on the error. We apply this estimate in an adaptive algorithm balancing the space and time discretisation error components in simulations in two space dimensions. The main contribution of this chapter is the symmetric reconstruction of the stress tensor. In the second chapter we propose another reconstruction technique for the stress tensor, while considering nonlinear elasticity problems.By imposing the symmetry of the tensor only weakly, we reduce computation time and simplify the implementation. We prove that the estimate obtained using this stress reconstuction is locally and globally efficient for a wide range of hyperelasticity problems. We add a linearization error estimator, enabling us to introduce adaptive stopping criteria for the linearization solver. The third chapter adresses the industrial application of the obtained results. We apply an adaptive algorithm to three-dimensional poro-mechanical problems involving elasto-plastic mechanical behavior laws.

Period instruments, material objects, and the making of the 20th–century early music revival

Perez, Maia Williams 22 June 2016 (has links)
When period instruments first appeared, audiences were highly skeptical of their musical value. It was not until the early-1900s—and performers like Arnold Dolmetsch—that they began to become not only accepted, but increasingly mandated for early music performances. However, while criticisms regarding their use persisted into the 1940s, it has never received the type of intense debate other details of performance practice have. Perhaps because of this lack, scholarship has also neglected to consider what ideological roles period instruments have played in historical performance. Why does the role of period instruments matter?  Partly because most writing about early music includes assumptions about them and their importance; for instance, mid-20th century performance practice guides implicitly assign them considerable authority over the ever-contested designation of “authenticity.” However, this is not the only role period instruments play. I argue that early advocates for period instruments like Arnold Dolmetsch used them to create a type of “intimacy” crucial to many aspects of performance practice. Created through both the instruments' materially and their timbres, this intimacy closes temporal and spatial historical gaps, allowing performers and their audiences to connect with distant musics in a modern way—and allowing “old” music to develop a living musical value.

Sir Herbert Butterfield, Arnold J. Toynbee and Martin Wight and the crisis of international politics : a study in international thought

Hall, Christopher I. January 2003 (has links)
This thesis examines the international thought of Sir Herbert Butterfield, Arnold J. Toynbee and Martin Wight, commonly portrayed in International Relations as 'realist', 'revolutionist' and 'rationalist' thinkers respectively. Their thought is reconsidered in terms of what they each perceived to be a crisis in the international realm. This perception, it is argued, shaped their distinctive understandings of the contemporary and future state of international relations. In contrast to many of their peers, Butterfield, Toynbee and Wight turned to religion and to history to aid their comprehension of the challenges that international crisis posed, and to help them form and articulate their desired practical responses. This thesis explores in detail both the religious beliefs of each man and their understandings of the nature of the past and historical knowledge, seeking to offer a view of the foundations of their international thought. In the second half, their diagnoses of international crisis are explored, and the responses they put forward to ameliorate it. It is argued that Butterfield, Toynbee and Wight are best not understood as 'realist', 'revolutionist' and 'rationalist', and it is asserted that such categories, far from aiding our understanding of the history of international thought, serve to obscure the nature of each man's work in the field.

Saint Exupéry et Villiers de l'Isle-Adam : Les épicentres de la construction de l'Univers, du parcours et de la figure du héros dans le Théâtre de Luigi Dallapiccola : une esthétique du sacré et de l'initiatique / Saint Exupery et Villiers de L'Isle-Adam : the epicentres of the construction of the Universe, the journey and of the figure of the hero in the theatre of Luigi Dallapiccola : an aesthetic of the holy and of the initiatory

Samson, Sylvain 03 March 2011 (has links)
Opera is the core of Luigi Dallapiccola’s thought (1904-1975). His first two operas, Volo di notte and Il Prigioniero are influenced by Antoine de Saint Exupéry (1900-1944) and Auguste de Villiers de l’Isle-Adam (1838-1889). These two authors, essential to the composer’s whole musical and dramatic corpus, are in fact at the root of the World, of the Journey and of the Figure of the Hero: they foretell an aesthetic of the Holy and of the Initiatory. When writing his libretti himself, Dallapiccola works on his sources, questioning them and associating them to a rich literature. The hero follows a tortuous path, amid light and shadow, dream and nightmare, freedom and jail. Serene Elation and dread mingle, myth and religion are treated: they create a sacred place for the hero. The readings, literary, musical but also philosophical and anthropological, reveal a treacherous course, an initiatory journey imbued with loneliness, fear and suffering. The hero evolves in a tripartite structure, sacred, initiatory and expressionist. Luigi Dallapiccola builds up a multi-disciplinary conception of opera, humanist, visionary, which questions Man’s mood.
