Previous issue date: 2009-02-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work has as its objective to investigate the musical conceptions and practices of students from the 8th grade of the elementary education and the policies concerning the art and music education at school in Ponta Grossa – Paraná, having as analysis vectors the media and the school musical practices. The proposed specific objectives are: to investigate the musical taste and practices of students from the 8th grade of the elementary education; to analyze the educational policies for the art and music education and the musical practices of the school, in order to verify in what level they meet the musical taste demand and the musical experience of the students; to investigate the students conceptions concerning the art and music education at school. The proposal of the research undertaking set off from the disquiet about the relation of the students with music, their practices and musical consumption, keeping in sight the Law Project 330/06, approved as an ordinary Law n.11769/2008, which makes obligatory the music education at school. The method applied is based in the dialectical and historic materialism, considering that the subjects and the research spaces are inserted into a wider economical, political and social reality. The prioritized instrument of research was the questionnaire, applied in 297 students from the 8th grade from 13 state public schools and 6 private schools from Ponta Grossa - Paraná. The obtained results indicate that the investigated adolescents have musical knowledge, showing themselves as active music consumers, and their taste derivates from the mediatical emissions, mostly based on the internet. However, the school does not incorporate this knowledge, reducing not only the music, but also the art to a secondary situation in the school environment. The educational policies are configured as an important way of democratization to the artistic languages access, but they need to be readjusted and rethought according to the contexts in which they are inserted. The verification that the school does not work the musical and artistic knowledge properly, and does not consider important adolescents practices knowledge, leads to reflect about the imposed challenges by the new law which institutes the obligation of music in the basic education.

The growth, development and impact of the Grahamstown Festival of the Arts with special reference to musicSilva, Jane Susan January 1998 (has links)
The Grahamstown Festival has become a huge and complex annual celebration of the arts, transforming the small Eastern Cape city for ten days every year. However this event had very modest beginnings, as did music and festivals in the city of Grahamstown. From its early days Grahamstown showed strong signs of becoming an important cultural centre, presenting numerous musical concerts from 1812, the festival tradition in the city beginning in 1887. The modern arts festival, initiated in 1971, had a chequered history during the early and mid 1970's, weathering economic recession, petrol restrictions and a repressive and restrictive political atmosphere. However by 1979 the event had become established and popular enough to ensure continued success during the 1980's. The period 1980-89 was one of great growth and development for the festival regarding attendance, and the number and nature of productions presented. Music had always been an integral part of the festival, and for the first time its role in this artistic celebration is being examined. The impact of such an event is varied and far-reaching, and thus difficult to assess, but the thesis ends with an attempt to gauge the Festival's impact.

Previous issue date: 2013-03-22 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The thesis has its largest array in the reorganization of science that is built from the middle of the last century and its horizon reconnection between scientific culture and humanistic culture, and the dialogue between science, art and literature. This epistemological regeneration view of the scientific paradigm incorporates the poetic language and sociological analysis, and brings out a complex, open and transdisciplinary narrative. To undertake this exercise as interlocutors we have thinkers like Nietzsche, L?vi-Strauss, Edgar Morin and Bruno Latour, to name a few, and as a reference for analyzing the entire artistic production of one of the icons of Brazilian music, Clara Nunes. It is problematized up in this work, through the singer s discography, lyrics and fragments of her biography, the construction of a social character that politicized culture, increased the mestizo consciousness of popular imagery, and exceeded the excessively prosaic narratives of the academic and scientific culture.

: En studie om föräldrars delaktighet i sitt barns musicerande på tvärflöjt / "Isn't it time to be practicing the flute a little bit?" : A study about parents involvement in their kids flute playingSandberg, Julia January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to make visible how parents experience their involvement in their kid’s flute playing. The study is a qualitative study with pragmatism as its theoretical framework. In this study four half structured interviews with parents whose kids play the flute was used as basis for the analysis. This study also used a quantitative method in the form of a survey that was used to examine the field and for inspiration for the interview questions. The survey was directed to parents whose kids play the flute and was answered by 64 parents. The result of this study shows that parents experience their involvement in their kid’s flute playing by being involved in different ways for example by showing interest and to solve their kid’s problems that arise when the kid is playing the flute. The result also shows that parents experience challenges in their involvement with their kids playing the flute mostly because of their limited musical knowledge but also because of lack of time and energy. The conclusion of this study is that parents experience their involvement in their kid’s flute playing as variated but that the parent’s attitude and perception of music and the fact that their kids are playing the flute is throughout positive.

Imagining Kandinsky’s theories as a synesthetic iPhone appUnknown Date (has links)
Wassily Kandinsky wrote Über das Geistige in der Kunst, in 1912, and was
translated from German into English by Michael Sadler. Naming it at first, “The Art of
Spiritual Harmony” in 1914 it is known as, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. He wrote
color and music theories based on angles, synesthetic experiences, subjective instincts,
chromotherapy, and shapes. Kandinsky’s theories are worth continuing to research and
bring forth into the new generation of technology where we can see music as numerical
expressions. The goal of this iPhone Application is to teach users the relationship
between color and music based on Kandinsky’s theories. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Výtvarný a hudební minimalismus / Minimal art and minimal musicŠedinová, Pavla January 2011 (has links)
Pavla Šedinová: Minimal art and minimal music Abstract: This thesis focuses on the theoretical description of minimalism in the fine arts and music. It follows the progression of minimisation in art in the first half of the twentieth century, which culminates in minimal art and minimal music, and compares its principles with multiplication in the work of Andy Warhol and Velvet Underground. At the same time the paper discusses the difference between American minimalism and its European and Czech parallels. The aim of this thesis is describing main concepts of minimalism that could be relevant for teaching purposes. The pedagogical part of the thesis focuses on the manner in which the obtained information about the fine arts and music could be utilised in teaching, particularly in Elementary Art Schools. The practical part demonstrates my own approach to minimalist principles.

Teachers' Perspectives about Infusing Music into Language Arts InstructionThomas, Demetria Lucille 01 January 2014 (has links)
Reading and writing curricula in more than 50% of America's schools have not been successful in assisting students to meet mandated academic performances for a number of reasons, including lack of student motivation and self-esteem. Research studies indicated that music can influence student motivation and academic performance in subjects such as language arts and that a music-infused curriculum could generate the positive difference between academic failure and academic success. For this qualitative case study with a constructivist paradigm, the purpose was to observe, document, and analyze music-infused lessons used by 4 teachers from prekindergarten to 5th grade with the goal to enhance students' language arts skills. The study examined teachers' perspectives and the instructional tools they used to stimulate and motivate students to strive toward academic success. It included interviews, a focus group, and observations with the participants. Data were coded, transcribed, analyzed, and evaluated for the final documented results, which revealed the benefits teachers experienced and the positive changes they noticed in their students from using music infusion in language arts. Findings revealed that students were more motivated, exhibited better attitudes, and had sustained attention and better retention of lessons taught with a music-infused structure. A recommendation is that administrators allow teachers more opportunities and flexibility to collaborate and assist with developing music-infused lessons to align with their language arts curriculum. Overall, the implications for social change were significant for educators, administrators, and students by providing an alternative method to teaching language arts that can increase motivational levels and academic success of struggling students.

Physical interaction with electronic instruments in devised performanceSpowage, Neal January 2016 (has links)
This thesis describes how I took part in a series of collaborations with dancers Danai Pappa and Katie Hall, musician George Williams and video artist Julie Kuzminska. To realise our collaborations, I built electronic sculptural instruments from junk using bricolage, the act of subversion, skip diving and appropriation. From an auto-ethnographic viewpoint, I explored how collaborations began, how relationships developed and how various levels of expertise across different disciplines were negotiated. I examined how the documentation of the performances related to, and could be realised as, video art in their own right. I investigated the themes of work, labour and effort that are used in the process of producing and documenting these works in order to better understand how to ‘create’. I analysed the gender dynamics that existed between my collaborators and myself, which led to the exploration of issues around interaction and intimacy, democratic roles and live art. The resulting works challenged gender stereotypes, the notion of what a musical instrument can be and how sound is produced through action/interaction. I found that reflective time was imperative; serendipity, constant awareness of one’s environment, community and intimate relationships greatly enhanced the success of the collaborations. Instruments became conduits and instigators with shifting implied genders based on their context or creative use. As well as sound being a product of movement, effort and interaction, I realised it was also an artefact of the instruments.
