Gone with the rain: negative effects of rainfall on male reproductive success in a nest-building arachnid / E a chuva levou: efeitos negativos da precipitação sobre o sucesso reprodutivo dos machos em um aracnídeo construtor de ninhosAndres Rojas Valle 26 June 2018 (has links)
In nest-building species, offspring survival and reproductive success of parental individuals are strongly influenced by nest location and quality. Thus, quantifying the influence of abiotic conditions on nest integrity is important to predict the effects that weather variability may have on offspring survival and parental reproductive success. Here we investigated how rainfall affects nest integrity and how nest integrity influences male attractiveness and nest tenure. Our study species was the harvestman Quindina limbata, in which males build cup-like mud nests on fallen logs and protect the eggs against predators and fungi infestation. Our dataset is based on 12 months of regular inspections of over 150 nests in a tropical rainforest from Costa Rica. We found that 43% of the nests were destroyed by rainfall. The drag force promoted by rainfall running on the log surface negatively affected nest integrity by decreasing the wall perimeter and the floor area. The intensity of fungi cover was not explained by nest position or by precipitation. No matter the body size of the owner males, nests with high integrity received more eggs than nests with low integrity. Curiously, nests with high values of fungi cover received more eggs. Finally, nest integrity and fungi cover did not affect nest tenure, but the probability of males abandoning their nests increased with time they did not receive eggs. Considering that intense rainfall occurs all year long in tropical forests, the best males can do to decrease the chances of nest destruction is to select protected places to build their nests.

Previous issue date: 2010-12-21 / Transposition systems for fishes at the dam hydroelectric power plants are designed to mitigate impacts, however, it is necessary for these systems to be evaluated and monitored. This study, conducted at the fish ladder of the Engenheiro Sergio Motta Hydroelectric Power Plant - CESP, during the period from November 2009 to April 2010, aimed to analyze the effectiveness of this system, considering two aspects needed for analysis: the rate of attractiveness, and subsequently, the efficiency of the fish ladder. The rate of attractiveness considered the percentage of individuals who found the entry, while the efficiency was calculated from the percentage ascending along the fish ladder through the Ascend Function.
The Risk Function was used to identify sites that might hinder the ascent of the species studied. The RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system was utilized in the study, with the installation of eight antennae along the fish ladder and transponders (PIT tags) of 32mm were implanted in four long-distance migratory fish species. We considered two sites for the release after the tagging: in the first, designated as the ramp, situated approximately 1,100m downstream the entrance to the fish ladder, 757 individuals were tagged, of which 151 were Brycon orbignyanus, 204 Piaractus mesopotamicus, 196 Prochilodus lineatus and 206 Rhinelepis aspera. At the second site, the pool 11 of the ladder, 317 individuals were tagged distributed in 100 P. mesopotamicus, 109 P. lineatus and 108 R. aspera. The results of the attractiveness for individuals released in the ramp were 15.89% for B. orbignyanus, 55.39% for P. mesopotamicus, 7.4% for P. lineatus and 24.73% for R. aspera. The results of the estimates of efficiency whith the use of the Ascend Function were differentiated for part of the species studied. For B. orbignyanus released in the ramp efficiency was 79%. P. mesopotamicus obtained 94% when released in the ramp, and 78% for the fishes released in the pool 11. The results for P. lineatus was 100% for the fishes released in the ramp and 69% for the pool 11. For the R. aspera percentages of 43 and 31% were observed in the ramp and in pool 11, respectively. Significant differences were verified between species regarding the time of arrival at the fish ladder: R. aspera (lowest time) differed from all the species and B. orbignyanus differed from P. mesopotamicus. The times spent traveling along the fish ladder were different for P. mesopotamicus and P. lineatus, with greater time accumulated by R. aspera. In the risk estimates, the highest values occurred in the initial portion, i.e., up the third antenna, suggesting that some hydrological variable may exist in this segment imposing greater restrictions upon the species studied. The assessments and monitoring of the effectiveness of the fish ladder in the Engenheiro Sergio Motta Hydroelectric Power Plant, for the species studied, as well as other target species, should be continued over the long term, in order to verify if this passage permits the fishes, within the reproductive period (piracema) to find and overcome the passage in good time to undertake their reproduction in the tributaries situated upstream of the dam.

In humans and animals, odors guide behavior and motivate action. The hedonic value (that is the pleasantness) is the main olfactory dimension and is generally used to decide to approach the odor source or move away. While this attractiveness is shaped by experience, some unfamiliar odors are spontaneously attractive or repulsive. The pleasantness of an odor would be, at least in part, innate, and suggest a specific neural signature of the hedonic value of odors. The global aim of this thesis is to decipher neuronal mechanisms underlying the hedonic value of odors. After having selected odorants with various level of attraction (pleasant and unpleasant), we have deciphered the neural bases that underlie these behaviors. We first mapped (expression of Zif268) and then manipulated (optogenetic) the neuronal activity of the olfactory bulb in response to these odors, and have revealed a bulbar neural signature of the hedonic value of odors along the antero-posterior axis. Then, in order to analyze how the hedonic information was interpreted by the higher olfactory and associative areas, we developed a method allowing the registration of brain activity in a reference atlas, that ensure a fast, accurate and reliable mapping of this activity. Finally, by combining this method with behavioral, electrophysiological and pharmacological approaches, we have shown a role of the reward system in the coding of odor hedonics and that an odor can act as a reward, thus motivating behavior, approach and withdrawal

Structure sociale et stratégies de reproduction chez la fourmi hautement polygyne Crematogaster pygmaea / Social structure and reproductive strategies in the highly polygynous ant Crematogaster pygmaea.Hamidi, Rachid 16 July 2010 (has links)
In monogynous ants, independent foundation lead to high levels of relatedness between workers, ensuring their indiret fitness. Territoriality helps to maintain the social cohesion of the colony. In polygynous ants, nestmate recognition is generally less efficient, queens have lost the capability of solitary foundation and several maternal lineages lead to lower degrees of relatedness. Although highly polygynous, Crematogaster Pygmaea seems to share several biological traits with monogynous ants. These characteristics make this species a particularly interesting model to test several of the assumptions proposed to explain the origin and maintenance of polygyny in ants.<p><p>In the field, our results reveal that workers of this species are clearly aggressive towards non-nestmates. Populations of C. pygmaea are therefore multicolonial. Traditional Petri dish confrontations were insufficient to determine colonies’ degree of openness. Despite a simple cuticular hydrocarbon profile, alkenes and branched alkanes could be sufficient to support the colonial odor. Colonies of C. pygmaea consist of thousands of workers exchanged between different calies. Genetic and chemical data show that these exchanges contribute to the homogeneity and integrity of the colonies within populations.<p><p>Queen-worker dimorphism is pronounced in C. pygmaea and, in the laboratory, young mated queens are able to initiate a new colony by claustral foundation (in haplometrosis and pleometrosis). In the field, nuptial flights were noted at the beginning of the rain season and several young mated queens were observed digging the wet soil actively, confirming that solitary foundation is likely in this species. Swarming may occur over short distances, as suggested by the positive correlation between genetic and geographic distances among colonies.<p>Queens are able to follow chemical trails. Therefore, they could enter in established colonies. Nevertheless, since (i) workers are able to discriminate and kill foreign queens and (ii) relatedness is strong within colonies, adoption of foreign queens is probably rare. Genetic analysis rather suggest that colonies form family units in which the queens are recruited within a single generation and produce the workers of this generation. <p>Our results also show that workers are able to produce fertile males in the absence of queens. Despite this ability to reproduce, reproductive altruism in workers is probably maintain by high degree of relatedness between colony members and worker policing behaviours.<p><p>Our data show that cuticular lipid of non-fertile individuals (workers and winged virgin queens) differ from those of fertile ones by the presence of four alkenes. Mating does not alter the cuticular profile. Surprisingly, the cuticular lipid profile of mature queens is more similar to those of infertile individuals than to those of young egg-laying queens, although mature laying queens are twice as attractive as young laying queens. However, the relative proportion of one alkene (pentacosene) is clearly higher in mature queens than in their non-laying nestmates. It is therefore suggested that alkenes, and more particularly pentacosene, could be involved in fertility signalling but that queen attractiveness to workers could be released by other, non-cuticular compounds. <p><p>The biological traits of C. pygmaea have been interpreted in terms of adaptation to its environment characterized by sharply contrasting seasons. It is suggested that high number of related queens and polydomy ensure a rapid expansion of the colonies during the rainy season, allowing this species to exploit available resources with efficiency.<p> / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

The role of government policies on the attraction of Foreign Direct Investment to SADC CountriesObazee, Queeneth Ivie 01 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the role of government policies in attracting the foreign direct investment (FDI) to SADC countries. To achieve this, the study uses econometric, statistical, and thematic methods within a panel data context and explores means through which SADC countries can attract the FDI. The study covered a panel of 15 SADC countries over the period 1980–2018. FDI is associated with several benefits, particularly in the less developed countries for their investment purposes. However, these less developed countries – including SADC member countries – encounter challenges of attracting FDI despite having abundant natural resources and proposing various regulatory reforms to liberalise their economies.
The empirical approach suggested several ways through which a country can attract FDI. The study found that FDI in SADC is not entirely driven by the presence of natural resources but by other determining factors such as the infrastructure development and economic growth, which proved to be paramount in attracting FDI. Therefore, the study recommends that SADC should not only adopt structural policy reforms that potentially improve trade openness, but also adopt strategic infrastructure development. / Business Management / M. Souvislost mezi reaktivitou imunitního systému a atraktivitou obličeje / Relationship between reactivity of immune system and facial attractivenessSlámová, Žaneta January 2018 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that physical attractiveness is one of important aspects in mate choice. Facial traits perceived as attractive may be linked to potential mate quality, or more precisely to their reproductive potential, health and ability to invest in his mate and offspring. Mating with individuals with more reactive immune system could lead to higher reproductive success and thus it is possible that visual cues facilitating detection of such traits may have evolved. The main aim of the present thesis was to test a possible association between the reactivity of the immune system response to foreign antigens (stimulated by vaccination) and facial attractiveness perceived by opposite sex individuals. Further, we investigated visual changes occurring during immune system activation. We did not find any association between measures of reactivity of immune system and perceived facial attractiveness. However, participants with activated immune system were rated as significantly less attractive and were significantly paler. Overall, our results suggest that people are sensitive to visual cues to current health status but not to overall quality of the individual. Key Words Facial attractiveness, mate choice, sexual selection; heterozygosity; symmetry; immune system, antigen; disease-avoidance,...

Remote work post covid-19- a way to increase organizational attractiveness : A qualitative case study of employee’s experiences of remote work during covid-19Tunholm, Hanna, Lindor, Johanna January 2021 (has links)
In a constantly changing society, there is a demand for organizations to be seen as attractive as they may develop competitiveness on the market. Due to covid-19 newly formed demands are being established for the employer to follow such as working remotely. The purpose of the study is to describe the employee's experiences of remote work during covid-19 and how organizations will be perceived as attractive by the employees when offering remote work post covid-19. Two research questions have been conducted: What are the employee's experiences with remote work? In what way do remote work post covid-19 influence the attractiveness of the organization? Interpretivism is conducted as the paradigm of the study to further carve the purpose and approach. The study is developed through a single case study in a global organization with an inductive approach that permeates the investigation of the purpose. The study is qualitative where semi-structured interviews are used as a collection of empirics. Furthermore, a thematic analysis is used. In the first research question the following themes are developed: Work-life balance, Information, Communication and Interaction and The Effect of Remote work. The themes developed through the second research question follow: Flexibility after covid-19 and the Indications of Flexibility. The previous research creates a greater understanding of empirics. The conclusion reveals that the perception of remote work during covid-19 in the specific case varies and is individualistic. Flexibility in remote work post covid-19 emerges as increasing the attractiveness of the organization. This serves as an indication of other attractive elements however some conditions are required.
