Imagery as a technique in the treatment of depressed adolescents under psychiatric supervision

Ackermann, Tanya Elma 01 November 2001 (has links)
The majority of adolescents diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Gauteng complained of being tired of 1'talk therapy" . This study used imagery as a technique in the treatment of two adolescents suffering from MDD. The initial identification was based on the results of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). After a number of sessions of implementing imagery techniques, the BDI was readministered. To determine the long-term effectiveness of imagery, the BDI was again administered a month-and-a-half after completion of the sessions. The results before and after indicate a reduction in the severity of depression. The results at the month-and-a-half follow-up session indicated a further reduction in the level of depression in both cases. This indicates the long-tenn effectiveness of imagery in treating depression. Further research is required, but there are significant indications that imagery may be an effective technique in the treatment of depressed adolescents under psychiatric supervision. / Educational studies / M.Ed (Guidance and Counseling)

Comparing prevalence rates of depressive symptoms in postpartum and nonpostpartum samples in a low-income community

Westwood, Bridget Anne 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Within the medical models, postpartum depression is constructed as a mental illness, that women are predisposed to during the postpartum period because of the biological and physiological changes that occur before, during and after childbirth. The present study aimed to determine whether childbirth increases the risk of developing depressive symptomatology in the first six months after delivery. The objective of the study was to examine the concept of postpartum depression by analyzing the difference in depressive symptom rates between 41 postpartum women and 254 male and female (who had not given birth in the previous six months) community members residing in a semi-rural area of South Africa. This objective was reached by using a cross-sectional survey research design. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to elicit the quantitative data. Several independent t-tests were conducted to determine the following (i) whether low-income women three months postpartum had higher BDI scores in comparison to a combined gendered community sample, and (ii) whether low-income women six months postpartum had higher BDI scores in comparison to a combined gendered community sample. The results indicated that the postpartum women did not experience elevated rates of depressive symptoms at three months or at six months in comparison to the community sample. Men in the 2003 community sample displayed significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms than the sixmonth postpartum women. These findings do not support the assumption that childbirth predisposes women to psychological vulnerability during the postpartum period.

Suicidal Ideation in Patients Hospitalized for Emergency Medical Treatment Related to Physical Trauma: Effects of Posttraumatic Stress and Depression

Carney, Erin E 01 April 2016 (has links)
Survivors of physical trauma may be at increased risk for developing suicidal ideation and behavior both during and after their inpatient hospitalization for medical treatment of wounds. It remains to be understood why a population hospitalized for nonpsychiatric reasons may ultimately develop a desire to take their own life. The current study sought to answer this question by hypothesizing that symptoms of posttraumatic stress (PTS) and depression during the recovery period individually mediated the relationship between physical pain and suicidal ideation. Researchers assessed these relationships in 246 patients who were receiving emergency medical treatment for wounds associated with a physically traumatic event. Patients were interviewed using a battery of assessments, including the PTSD Checklist-Civilian, Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, Medical Outcomes Study Short Form, and the Patient Health Questionnaire. Regression analyses provided support for the role of PTS and depression as mediators of the relationship between physical pain and suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that it may be important for behavioral health professionals to monitor symptoms of PTS and depression during a trauma survivor’s painful recovery period, as this may provide a crucial window of intervention during which the escalation of suicidal feelings can be prevented.

Use of the Beck Depression Inventory in Northern Brazil

Albert, Christopher 05 1900 (has links)
The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is a popular screening and research instrument for measuring severity of depression. The instrument was translated to Portuguese for use in Brazil in 1979; however, it was not until recently that its psychometric properties have been tested empirically for the Brazilian population. The purpose of the present study was to explore the BDI's psychometric properties in a northern region of Brazil and to test for possible relationships between certain demographic variables and BDI outcomes. Samples used in this study were from an urban area in Roraima, the northernmost state of Brazil. The BDI showed adequate levels of internal consistency in nonclinical and clinical samples. Female respondents had significantly higher scores than male respondents. Those who had lower levels of education, income, or occupational status had significantly higher scores than those with higher levels of these variables. Adolescents had significantly higher scores than adults from all age groups except those from age 19 to 22. No significant difference was found between those who identified themselves as “indigenous” and those who identified themselves as “non-indigenous.” Regression analysis results showed that the combination of gender, education, and age best accounted for the variance in BDI scores. An ANCOVA revealed that clinically depressed adults had significantly higher BDI scores than nonclinically depressed adults. Factor analysis results showed that there were two main factors in the item structure for both female respondents and male and female respondents combined: one factor of mainly cognitive-affective items and the other factor of mainly somatic items. The results were discussed in terms of the future use of the BDI in Brazil.

Factors of Depression in the Elderly: Assessment and Implications for Diagnosis

Kunsak, Nancy Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of assessment and diagnosis of depression in the elderly begins with the definition of depression being indefinite. In this study, the theory of learned helplessness was chosen because of its value in organizing research within a learning theory framework. The Beck Depression Inventory, measures of fluid and crystallized intellectual ability, locus of control, and attribution of success and failure were chosen as variables for an exploratory factor analysis. The purpose of selecting these variables was to assess the cognitive, motivational, and affective components of learned helplessness as they affected the responses of elderly subjects to depression items. Self report measures of income, education, and health, were included to assess the relationship of these variables to depression. A somatic factor was predicted to correlate with an affective factor of depression.

Salazar Sánchez, Claudia January 2015 (has links)

Lärkmo, Alexander January 2019 (has links)
During a long period of time, mankind as we know it, has progressed in remarkable ways. We leap from one era to another, whilst becoming smarter and more capable. Although one could argue for the superiority of man, we have now reached a time where our skilfulness is beginning to backfire. As the desire for production and consumption is growing, the environmental impacts increase. Climate change has in many ways become the product of modernity. However, these relatively new circumstances are met with more and more awareness. One example is how Swedish grocery stores, in this case COOP, have expanded their range of vegetarian foods. They claim to take responsibility for the planet and for a greener future. In the last two years, they have released two rather noteworthy commercials, with the aim of reducing meat-eating. By applying a narrative and semiotic analysis, and by using Becks theories on reflexive modernization as framework, this essay has studied these commercials in order to understand how they communicate their plant based alternatives in relation to a changing society. The results showed that both commercials portray a growing concern for the planet and the prevailing change of its climate. To prevent these conditions from accelerating, they suggest less meat on the plate. Likewise, semiotic tools, like falling trees or flooding cities, are used to enhance the significance of the narrative. In conclusion, both commercials show to be in line with Becks observations of the modernized world – an acknowledgement of its detrimental character. Additively, they function as a means of addressing the issues of modernity and meat-eating in particular.

The beliefs associated with alcohol and their link with traumatic experiences and several psychological disorders in Saudi Arabia : an exploratory research

Tammar, Raghdah 21 December 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Mostly, the researches about this subject are done in legal alcohol consumption environment. Therefore the case of Saudi Arabia should give different results. Regarding cognitive theory, chemical dependence consists of a strong interaction between cognitions (thoughts, convictions, schemas), values, opinions, expectations and suppositions attitudes; emotions; familial and social connections; social impacts; and natural and physiological procedures. We are interested in exploring these beliefs in a society that forbids alcohol and presenting a complete evaluation protocol adapting to Saudi culture. Method: We studied 144 subjects, separated into 3 groups depending on addiction and gender. Results: Higher positive believes related to alcohol in alcoholics while there is no difference between men and women. A positive correlation between craving and relapse. The traumatic experiences are higher in alcoholics and positively correlated with relapse. Conclusion: The beliefs related to alcohol consumption beside all other variables that are mentioned above have a vital role in the comprehension and the treatment of this issue.

The main objective of the research was to adjust the cutoff scales for screening for depression, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), for pregnant teenagers. It is a cross-sectional, population-based study carried out with pregnant adolescents (10-19 years old), which consulted the service prenatal Unified Health System (SUS) of Pelotas. Was carried out from October 2009 to March 2011. The sample was composed based on the SIS-Prenatal program records along the municipal health department and the Basic Health Units, and specialized clinics in the urban area of Pelotas / RS. The women answered a questionnaire with socio demographic and obstetric data, besides the two scales for screening for depression during pregnancy. Also participated in a structured clinical interview Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0 (MINI) for the clinical diagnosis of depression. Demographic, obstetric and psychiatric social variables were assessed according to the WHO questionnaire. The accuracy of the scales was calculated by their Area under the curve (AUC) of ROC, as well as their respective sensitivity, specificity and predictive values. The best cutoff (PC) found for this sample was ≥10 EPDS scale, with sensitivity 81.1% and specificity 82.7% and AUC of 0.899. BDI for the best cutoff point was ≥11, sensitivity 81.1%, sensitivity 76.8% and an AUC of 0.869. Since the difference between the two AUC were statistically significant (p = 0, 0215). Based on the results, it is concluded that the EPDS scale has become more predictive and sensitive in screening for depression in pregnant adolescents, with respect to BDI.
