Cognitive and Attributional Correlates of Depression: An Analysis of the Redundancy Between Beck•s Cognitive Triad and Seligman's Attributional Styles

Anderson, Kent W. 01 May 1990 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree vi of redundancy between two prominent cognitive theories of depression: Beck's cognitive triad and Seligrnan's attributional triad. Three hundred and eighteen subjects were recruited from nine different psychology courses at Utah State University and affiliated locations across the state. Subjects completed the Cognitive Triad Inventory (CTI), the Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results indicate that the three CTI subscales (self, world, and future) and the three ASQ subscales (internal, global, and stable) did not correlate sufficiently to merit integration across measures. However, factor analyses reduced the three CTI constructs to two factors: a security/insecurity factor and the presence/absence of stressors. The ASQ also was reducible to two factors: a global/stable factor and an internal factor. The new CTI and ASQ factors could predict depression scores on the BDI equally as well as the CTI subscales and ASQ subscales, respectively.

Utilisation de modèles réduits par modes de branche pour l'identification de sources thermiques : application au freinage / Using branch eingenmode reduced models to solve thermic inverse problems : application to brake system

Carmona, Sylvain 08 November 2017 (has links)
Thermal sources identification for real-life configurations is challenged by the large size of the numeric systems involved to do so, thus inverse methods are not suited for solving these kind of problems (as they involve matrix inversion, iterative processes, …). The use of reduced models makes it possible to calculate the whole field of temperatures of the domain with a small number of unknowns. The aim of this work is to develop a new identification method in which the coupling between the adjoint inverse method and the reduced modal writing of the thermal problem posed by the use of Branch databases can be done.We can apply this method for braking problems. There are two main issues in these problems : on one hand, the diffusive problem on the break pad, and on the other hand, the conduction problem on the rotating disk. For these two types of configurations, the implemented technique is tested, analyzed and compared with the Function Specification Method. The results obtained show a better efficiency of the method developed in this study. For the problem of the temporal identification of the sources in the rotating disk, an almost on-line identification procedure by the adjoint method is proposed. For the brake pad, an extension of the method for a spatio-temporal identification is set up, in which the reduction technique is applied for both the three-dimensional temperature fields and for the parameterization of the flux density received by the surface of the wafer in contact with the rotating disk.

23 February 2022 (has links)
This study compares non-suicidal gamblers (n= 34) and suicidal gamblers (n = 60) in order to find which factors are associated with suicidal ideation among pathological gamblers seeking treatment. Ninety-four (94) pathological gamblers participated in this study. The factors studied include : marital status, employment, financial problems, prior history of help-seeking, substance abuse, and depressive symptoms. Results show that pathological gamblers in the suicidal group scored significantly higher at the BDI (M = 26.18, SD = 12.63) than non-suicidal gamblers ( M = 20.06, SD = 10.93). Depressive symptoms seem to be related to suicidal ideation among gamblers ( t (86) - -2.291, g < .05). It appears important to consider this information in the assessment of pathological gamblers.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the satisfaction of fibromyalgia patients through PASS and determine the correlation of scores obtained with FIQR in relation to PASS. Other objectives were:to determine the value of best accuracy of FIQR in relation to PASS; to compare the FIQR scores between satisfied and dissatisfied patients and FIQR scores between patients with disability claims or on work disability, in relation to the rest of the sample; to compare the mean scores from HAQ, Beck and PSD questionnaires between satisfied and not satisfied patients and evaluate the correlation between the questionnaires. In the studied sample, 82 fibromyalgia patients were assessed, from public and private healthcare services, according to the modified ACR 2010 criteria. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected and the impact of fibromyalgia was assessed by FIQR, the satisfaction by PASS and Likert scale, functional capacity by HAQ, depression by the Beck Depression Inventory and the polysymptomatic distress by PSD. In this sample depression (87%) and rheumatological diseases (64%) were the main comorbidities. Most patientes made use of antidepressants (96%) and analgesics (81%), but only 21% of patients performed at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. The results from the questionnaires showed severe impact of fibromyalgia, severe polysymptomatic distress, moderate to severe functional disability and moderate to severe depression symptoms. Patients with disability claims, or on work disability showed statistical difference in FIQR and Beck mean scores when compared to the rest of the sample. Patient satisfaction was considerably low in PASS (15% satisfied), as well as in Likert scale: 2.3 ± 2.8. There was no statistical difference between sociodemographic and clinical variables in relation to PASS satisfaction, except in older patients (p = 0.03) and patients with longer time since disease diagnosis (p = 0.003), who showed higher satisfaction. Correlation between FIQR and PASS was weak and negative (r = -0.26), showing that alterations in FIQR are little related to patient satisfaction. There was statistical difference (p = 0.001) in FIQR scores between the satisfied and the not satisfied group, and also in scores from other questionnaires comparing both groups, showing that dissatisfied patients have lower quality of life. Strong correlation was demonstrated between FIQR and HAQ questionnaires (r = 0.68) and FIQR and Beck (r = 0.61). The value of best accuracy of FIQR in relation to PASS was 65 (ROC curve), but with low sensitivity and specificity. The best specificity values, which reflect values where 100% of patients are satisfied, were very low for each questionnaire. This sample showed low satisfaction, severe physical and psychological symptoms in fibromyalgia patients, suggesting reinforcement of non pharmacological strategies for the treatment of the disease. And that in studies addressing therapeutic measures for fibromyalgia, satisfaction measures should be used.

This work intends to show the contemporary influence of Georg Simmel’s thought in the theoretical perspective of Ulrich Beck. As thematic structuring axis on the study casts and a structuring axis in Simmel’s and Beck’s works, we opted for the concept of individualism and it’s deriving individualization processes. This definition – as the theory of both authors is vast and covers a diverse domain of objects – it’s both a way to structure, within the study argument, a common point in the theory of both authors, as well as a form to contextualize two distinct moments of modernity, characterized by conflicts which migrates to another historic arena – in this specific case, the first to the second modernity, which determines the form of confrontational social grammar. The methodology adopted concerns to the theoretical propositions of sociology of knowledge, as well the comprehensive sociology and the relational method of Simmel and Beck, which the aim point is the pursuit understanding two distinct modernity moments who keeps a close nexus. Understanding the individualism and the individualization process means, in Simmel’s and Beck’s perspectives, understand a social form – the double self-determined entity condition concurrently with their inclusion in social dependency chains – which becomes a focus of conflict by the social form of the individual ends up in addiction and at the intersection of social circles ever wider. In this perspective, the individual, immersed in the coercion of objective culture that expands into a self-referential logic, becomes a historically weak social form. Ulrick Beck = a teoria da sociedade de risco mundial / Ulrich Beck : the theory of world risk society

Bosco, Estevão, 1983- 18 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Leila da Costa Ferreira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-18T09:50:37Z (GMT). The first aim is to comprehend and interpret the theory of the world risk society, formulated by Ulrich Beck, in order to unravel the key aspects that allow its characterization as a theory. The definition of this main purpose as a research question is justified by the usage of the essay by the author as an analytical/discursive strategy. To achieve this goal, the theoretical mediation is established through an immanent perspective, in which the regulatory concepts of the theory, reflexivity and risk, are defined as the analytical conductors. The main theses of the theory are thus delineated according to their specific dilemmas, innovations and practical and theoretical possibilities. From this, the immanent critique becomes possible, allowing new conceptual formulations by means of specific propositions, which are related to the following issues: procedural aspects of the concept of reflexivity; continuity and discontinuity in the design of socio-historical process; and the relation between reflexivity, modernity and uncertainty, from the perspective of the meanings of social developments (devir social). Beyond these specific contributions, this research is justified by discussing a theory on which there is no critical review, despite its spread in the academic circuit of a global sociology, their significant contributions to the sociological comprehension of contemporary issues and also despite the controversies that the theory raises in the realm of the justification of the argument / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia
