The main purpose of this text is to study the practices, the issues and the modalities of the animal diplomatic gift in the 13th century, especially during the reign of Frederick II, Henry III and Louis IX. The analysis is based on the presentation of the sociological and anthropological conceptualizations of the gift, particularly those of Marcel Mauss. They are used to understand the peculiarities of the animal diplomatic gift in the 13th century. Then, a research on animal descriptions of medieval bestiaries and encyclopedias is conducted to show the symbolic power and the physical and behavioral characteristics of the offered wildlife. Finally, several modalities of the donation are developed, such as the selection criteria and the wildlife preferences of the kings, the context and rules of the elaboration of a present and the movement of given animals. In addition, it is shown how the beasts and birds had a real use for the kings. Indeed, they staged their animals in order to appropriate their symbolism and show off their prestige and their greatness, at events or in the menageries.

This M.A. Thesis combines both research and creative writing. It starts with a narrative story entitled Les dents de sagesse du bestiaire inquiétant which contains ten tales. These tales take place in a fantasy world of bestiary adventures. This text about hybrid beasts is also an experimental text of the automatic writing process used by surrealists. It merges genres, such as letter, essay, poem and song. Thus, the hybrid nature of creatures in these tales justifies the formal aesthetic of this literary work.
The second part entitled Le détournement du mythe « femme-enfant » dans les contes fantastiques de Gisele Prassinos proposes a critical reading of the fantasy tales of surrealist author Gisèle Prassinos, who was chosen by surrealists as a symbol of the "femme-enfant" myth, when she was only 14 years old. However, the author firmly rejects this myth in her own writings (Les mots endormis and Trouver sans chercher), even though she engages in the surrealistic automatic writing process and ludic texts. Through a detailed reading, this essay analyses the deconstruction of the "femme-enfant" myth in Prassinos’ tales.

Os bestiários de Guimarães Rosa em Ave, PalavraPereira, Ivani Maria 07 March 2014 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / This dissertation aims to reflect upon the presence of animals in Literature, seeking to
elucidate compositional elements of selected texts from the work of the writer João
Guimarães Rosa in which the bestiary theme, mainly, inserted in new literary writing, can
be discussed. In order to do that, firstly we will travel, in a concise way, through Rosa´s
biography and also we will privilege a perspective that aims at thinking the presence of
animals in the literary journey of Guimarães Rosa. Following that we will present his last
work, Ave, Palavra, whose texts portray the animal theme intensely. More than that, we
magnified our view to the existing relationship between Man and animal in a modern
perspective since Rosa´s texts allow us to reflect those biases because of its contents whose
aesthetic procedures dialogue directly with the characteristics of modern literary
construction or, at least, renewed textual configurations. After, we reflected upon literary
genres, contemplating, specially, the poetic prose in Rosa´s works, enabling better
understanding about the issues that round Rosa´s zoopoetic. It was imperatively necessary,
before investigating Rosa´s bestiary specifically, a conceptual view and a historical
resumption about the bestiary´s genre, focusing on the medieval times, subsequently to a
contextualization of zooliterature, revisited and updated; lastly, upon the analysis of the
texts Aquário (Berlim) and Aquário (Nápoles) , from Ave, Palavra, we sought to
highlight Rosa´s style of bestiary and also the light of the investigative project of
ecocriticism. Therefore, we worked with the complexity of Guimaraes´Rosa writings
regarding the bestiaries, having as ballast, issues raised on texts from his literary career
and, above all, from his posthumous work, Ave, Palavra, reflecting about the boundaries
between human and non human, which enables an interpretative eye upon the picture of
the modern man.
Trabalhamos, deste modo, a complexidade
olhares interpretativos sob a figura do homem moderno. / Mestre em Teoria Literária

"Quels beste ce pooit estre" : Merlin et le bestiaire dans trois Suites du Merlin en prose : d'une poétique du personnage à une poétique du roman / "Quels beste ce pooit estre" : Merlin and the bestiary in three sequels to Prose Merlin : from the poetics of the character to the poetics of the romanceFuertes-Regnault, Lise 11 June 2016 (has links)
One of the most eminent figures of Arthurian literature, renowned in the Middle Ages as in later periods, Merlin remains however a polymorphous and contradictory character. A study focusing on two aspects will allow us to perceive his ambiguities and to form the poetics of the character. Firstly, from a relational perspective, the bestiary, that is to say the literary fauna, constitutes an element of this definition. In Prose Merlin’s retrospective prose sequels (the “Vulgate” Suite, the “Post-Vulgate” Suite and the Livre d’Artus), romances which constitute the apex of thirteenth century Arthurian texts in prose, this relation axis encounters an intertextual perspective. By its extent and its nature the Merlin bestiary reveals itself to be extremely variable and difficult to categorize, as is the nature of the character. The paradigms of incarnation and voice, together with the intus/foris dialectics, that govern the relations between the character and the bestiary, show that Merlin becomes increasingly complex, because he combines a role of vates responsible for the fiction and the prophetic bestiary with a distinctly romantic dimension by the end of the Prose Merlin. Finally, in the Prose Merlin sequels, the bestiary also explains both the (re)development and the end of these two aspects of the character, as well as the poetics of the texts. Through the metonymical, metaphorical and analogical relations with Merlin, the bestiary thus builds up three different synchronically contrasting conceptions of the character, matching the tone and the various poetical purposes in the Suites. It contributes thus to the moral message and the poetical thoughts that each of these romances, aware of their portent, consciously carry.

Jacob van Maerlant se Der naturen bloeme as ensiklopediese narratiefTheron, Elizabeth Rabie 08 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / During the past decade various studies have been conducted on the medieval
bestiary and simultaneously much has been written on the life and work of the
medieval scholar and writer, Jacob van Maerlant. Van Maerlant's famous
encyclopaedic work, Der Naturen B/oeme (Book of Nature) has been
thoroughly investigated in recent literary studies, though little has been done
to identify this work as encyclopaedic narrative.
The term, encyclopaedic narrative, is relatively unknown in Western
literature and therefore demands the research which is conducted in this
thesis. In the course of this study, the genre of encyclopedic narrative is
investigated and the Naturen 8/oeme is identified as a member of this
exclusive genre.
Edward Mendelson's article "From Dante to Pynchon" (1976) serves as the
starting point for this study, from where it continues its investigation into the
works of Jacob Van Maerlant. Van Maerlant's Der Naturen 8/oeme is
compared to a unique set of qualities for the encyclopaedic narrative in
which corresponding points are identified. From this investigation it is shown
that Der Naturen B/oeme qualifies as a member of the genre, encyclopaedic
narrative.
Naturen Bloeme as ensiklopediese narratief te identifiseer.
"From Dante to Pynchon" (1976) waarin Mendelson die term omskryf en
Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / M.A. (Afrikaans)
