Study of wave-induced seabed response around twin pipelines in sandy seabed through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations

Zhai, Y., Zhang, J., Guo, Yakun, Tang, Z., Zhang, T. 22 March 2022 (has links)
Yes / Wave-seabed-pipelines interaction is of critical importance in the design of submarine pipelines. Previous studies mainly focus on investigating the characteristics of flow fields and hydrodynamics around a single pipeline. In this study, laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have been performed to examine the effect of burial depth and space between the centers of twin pipelines on the wave-seabed-twin pipelines interaction subject to waves. In the mathematical model, the Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (VARANS) equations are used to describe the wave motion in the fluid domain, while the seabed domain is described by using the Biot's poro-elastic theory. Numerical models are validated using these experimental measurements and available relevant experimental data. Experimental and numerical results indicate that the burial depth and relative position of twin pipelines can significantly affect the wave-averaged flow velocity field and the pore-water pressure distribution as well as effective stress.

A History of Education for Black Students in Fairfax County Prior to 1954

Russell-Porte, Evelyn Darnell 19 December 2000 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to give a historical account of the educational developments for black students in Fairfax County, Virginia. The research will first address a brief history of education in Virginia. The second and third chapters will respectively address education for black students in the state and pre-Civil War education in Fairfax County. Chapters four and five will focus on the formation of post-Civil War public education in Fairfax County and the education of black students within the county. The author will fit the education of Fairfax County's black students into the context of education within the state of Virginia. Comparisons and contrasts can then be made regarding the quality of education offered to black students in Fairfax County. As with many southern communities, the growth of public education was affected by complacent attitudes, agrarian life styles, poor quality roads and lack of transportation. Fairfax County was no exception. Although numerous private and free schools existed prior to the Civil War, few received black students. The education of the black child, then, was left to the mercy and interest of those around him who chose to teach him basic reading and writing. Alexandria, for example, boasted of a large free black population--many of whom were educated in Alexandria when it was a part of Fairfax County. Both philanthropic and missionary agencies supported education for black students. After the Civil War other schools existed such as the Freedmen's Bureau schools. These schools functioned until 1871. By this time free public education was a reality in Virginia and the issue of placing both black and white children in the same school became the major topic of educational discussion. In an effort to avoid integration black students were sent outside of Fairfax County to Manassas and Washington. After years of struggle, Luther Jackson School was built within the county to educate Fairfax County's black students. Other schools were gradually built to accommodate the educational needs of the county's black students. Even though schools were built to educate black students, there were many disparities in terms of the quality of facilities within the buildings. Following the 1954 Brown Decision outlawing de jure segregation school assignment was not based on race for black or white children. As a result, parents could have a voice in school selection. In reality, the Brown Decision offered black parents more voice as these parents often sent their children to the formerly white schools. The general belief by whites was that black schools were inferior. Many of the formerly all-black schools eventually became administrative offices for Fairfax County Public Schools and black students began attending schools in their home districts. / Ed. D.

Architectural Regionalism in Indianapolis

Turrin, Jessica Catherine 16 September 2011 (has links)
Regional architecture defines a type of architecture that adapts to the everyday needs of a people and is constructed by the building methods and materials of the region. Regions do not have clear boundaries, but are largely defined by the conditions of nature: climate, soil, topography, vegetation, water. Through this thesis project I have tried to create a regional architecture in Indianapolis, Indiana that embraces the surrounding context, but does not imitate the architecture of the past, through a mixed-use building for everyday life. / Master of Architecture

Inhabitants Within Threshold (Threshold as Antidote for Urban Density)

Saito, Ryohei 08 February 2009 (has links)
The objective of my thesis is to explore and re-define the relationship between threshold and urban density. Threshold is an architectural medium, which divides and bridges spaces with certain meanings. Density is the defining character of the urban condition expressed consistently at different scales: from a city to a block, to a building and to the human habitation. My design project is about an application of threshold in architectural design within the context of urban density. The efficacy of threshold is tested in both external and internal conditions: the existing condition of the site and the internal workings of the program. To test the thesis, a design of a youth hostel in Washington D.C. was undertaken. The experiment was carried out with the following hypotheses: 1) that threshold is an architectural instrument that mitigates the urban density and 2) that threshold negotiates the territories among the inhabitants. The design experiment demonstrated the hypotheses and therefore, confirmed the relationship between threshold and urban density. / Master of Architecture

Seeing Through a Wall

Kredell, Stephen John 13 February 1998 (has links)
Architecture possesses the ability to evoke wonder in the everyday. This thesis and project mark the beginning of the study of an architecture that reveals this poetic dimension of the everyday. In an increasingly standardized world, how can architecture maintain, heighten or instill sense of place? How can the architect make the program architectural? How can architecture truly re-present rather than degrade everyday life? / Master of Architecture

Investigation of the Effects of Spacing between Bolts in a Row in a Single-Shear Timber Connection Subjected to Reverse Cyclic Loading

Billings, Mary Anna 03 December 2004 (has links)
This thesis presents the results of testing to determine if spacing between bolts in a multiple-bolt, single-shear connection subjected to natural hazard loading affects seven strength and serviceability parameters: maximum load, failure load, E.E.P. yield load, 5% offset load, elastic stiffness, E.E.P. energy, and ductility ratio. This research also determines if a statistical difference exists between previously published research for 4D spacing as compared to results produced by this research for five alternate spacings: 8D, 7D, 6D, 5D, and 3D. Finally, this research determines which of the spacings examined: 8D, 7D, 6D, 5D, 3D; produced the most optimal results for each examined strength and serviceability parameter where optimization is based on economy and performance. Three connection configurations with five different spacings between bolts were subjected to reverse cyclic loading for a total of one hundred and fifty tests. The reverse cyclic protocol was based on recommendations by the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE) for testing woodframe structures. The same connection configurations were also subjected to monotonic loading for an additional forty-five tests. Results of this research can be used to evaluate the current design recommendation presented in the National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction (AF&PA, 2001) of spacing bolts at four times the bolt diameter (4D) to determine if a different spacing should be recommended for natural hazard loading conditions. / Master of Science

The Value of Inclusion of the Peri-Urban Interface on Quality of Life for the Urban Population

Palacios, Leslie Jane 14 December 2012 (has links)
This paper examines peri-urban space existing separate from the urban fabric and often in between urban and rural landscapes. This is a largely neglected area and often considered by each side as belonging to the other. Contemporary studies identify two sides associated with the rural-urban fringe: the expanding built settlements and ebbing countryside, ignoring significance and the circumstance of the spaces. The peri-urban fringe is a planning opportunity, which provides services beyond simple human habitat or wasteland of undesirable function. Through this study I intend to present the peri-urban interface as an intricate element of the urban infrastructure. This paper examines a series of case studies, which display peri-urban land-use planning and design through established areas, boundaries, and buffers spanning North America, Western Europe and Australia. Each area is examined to determine scope, program, and ecological and social impacts. The data informs positive and negative impacts within the peri-urban area. The peri-urban fringe spaces take on many forms and functions. Successful sites enrich the associated urban communities, whereas unsuccessful sites, which often exist in conflict with abutting environments, reduce quality of life and essential ecological processes. The peri-urban interface varies with many scales and circumstances, which affect quality of life for the urban population. Planning in the PUI is essential in promoting healthy populations and ecologies. Scale, program and accessibility determine how effectiveness of a peri-urban interface. Through this study, I want to identify significant value of the peri-urban interface as an opportunity and asset for the urban landscape. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Les donations entre époux : doctrine, coutumes et législation (XIIe-XVIe siècle) / Donations between spouses : doctrine, customs and legislation (XIIth-XVIth century)

Laurent-Bonne, Nicolas 15 November 2012 (has links)
Immediately following the juridical renaissance of the 12th century and the rediscovery of the Justinian codification of Roman law, medieval jurists were committed to creating a general principle prohibiting donations between spouses. As early as the first half of the 13th century, however, civil law experts and canonists modulated the restrictions, thereby moving from strict prohibition to a simple system of revocability. French practitioners, responding to requests from married people concerned to protect their surviving spouse, contributed to weakening the constraints of Roman and canon law; promissory oaths, renunciation clauses and donations through an intermediary comprised such contrivances, which were sometimes even improvised and fraudulent. Despite this long doctrinal slide and the palliatives drawn up by notaries, such interdictions persisted over a long period of time in most territorial legislations, redrafted and repeatedly reformed according to the standards of Roman law from the high Middle Ages to the beginning of the modern times.

Família, sujeito composto: conjugalidade dos pais e sua relação com o bem-estar subjetivo e a satisfação nos relacionamentos amorosos dos filhos / Family, compound subject: marital relationships of the parents and its relation with a subjective well-being and satisfaction of romantic relationships of their children

Scorsolini Comin, Fabio 27 April 2012 (has links)
This descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship between the measure of parental conjugality as perceived and experienced by children, the levels of subjective well-being and the satisfaction in romantic relationships displayed by these children, as well the variation of this relationship as a function of marital status of children (married, single and dating and singles who do not date). It was selected a convenient sample comprised by three independent groups: (1) two-year-old married people (Group A, N = 118, mean age 41.55, SD = 10.01); (2) single people who have dated over at least one year (Group B, N = 140, mean age 21.99, SD = 3.16); and (3) single people who had not been in a relationship since one year earlier (Group C, N = 116, mean age 21.52 , SD = 4.25). The total sample was non-probabilistic, summing 374 subjects. The following instruments were applied: Questionnaire for the Identification of Participant including a general question of satisfaction in current relationship (SR); Abipeme Criterion; Scale of Subjective Well-being (EBES) to assess positive affect (AP), negative affect (AN), satisfaction with life (SV) and well-being (BES); Satisfaction with Couple Relationships Factorial Scale (EFS-RC), which evaluates satisfaction in relation to physical attraction and sexuality (SAFS) and satisfaction with common interests and behaviors (SAIC) and the Parental Questionnaire Conjugality (QCP). The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 17.0 for Windows. After applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, it was run a statistical non-parametric correlation analysis (Spearman). The data were normalized for comparison between groups (ANOVA and ANCOVA) and multiple regression analyzes (stepwise method), considering the variables of satisfaction in the relationship (SR, SAFS, SAIC), along with subjective well-being (AP, AN, SV and BES) as dependent variables. The significance level was p < 0.05. In the total sample, the perception of parents\' marital (PCP) was significantly correlated with the SAFS (rho = .20; p < .001) and among married, with SAIC (rho = .22; p = .017), although associations are considered weak. For the group singles who date, no significant correlations with the PCP were found. The PCP was one of the predictors 22 Fabio Scorsolini-Comin of SAFS, SAIC, AP, AN, SV and BES, not rejecting hypotheses 1 and 3 of the study, according to which the PCP was correlated to the satisfaction of the children in their love relationships (H1) and their well-being (H3). The variables of satisfaction in the relationship are factors associated with the BES, not rejecting the hypothesis 2. The average levels of PCP were significantly different between single and married, not rejecting the hypothesis 4. Considering the age differences between groups and to control the possible effects of this variable, it was performed an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), considering age as a covariate. This analysis allowed to better understanding the role of the age variable in the PCP and the results support the interpretation that age would be a powerful developmental variable, which redeem accumulated experiences throughout life. It is suggested that additional studies should be conducted to support this initial conclusion. Married participants have considered parents\' marriage more negatively compared to single participants, possibly by evaluating in a less idealized way besides a more mature judgment of the parental relationship. It was concluded that perception of parental conjugality, as one of the variables that explain the subjective well-being as well as satisfaction in romantic relationships of their children, is a phenomenon that should be associated with marital quality and the establishment of positive interpersonal relationship, which could be a landmark for future research and intervention practices with couples.

A relação entre o comportamento verbal e o não verbal de crianças na escolha do lanche / The relation between the verbal and non verbal behavior of children in the choice of the snack

Melo, Maria Elisa Midlej Pereira de 16 May 2007 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria E M P Melo.pdf: 480720 bytes, checksum: a48a5886e07f819a87667330616281ac (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-05-16 / Many studies have been analyzing treatments that intervene with the occurrence of correspondence between verbal and non verbal behavior. Nevertheless, the role of verbalization for the emission of the correspondent non verbal behavior, in the studies about correspondence between saying and doing, is not clear yet. The present work had the purpose to combine some treatments already used by some of the studies, with the intention to verify which would be the role of verbalization in the control of non verbal behavior, using a different target behavior than those that have been used in the most part of the studies, and introducing some modifications in the procedure and in the experimental design. The target behavior was the choice of food, considered healthful for the snack. 23 children between 5 and 6 years, with normal development, that studied in the same classroom of a Council School for children, participated of the study. The experimental conditions were: baseline, reinforcement of verbalization, reinforcement of compliance (experimenter s verbalization), reinforcement of correspondence, reinforcement of doing and reinforcement of verbalization 2. The children were divided in 3 groups, with 8, 5 and 7 participants. The sequence of presentation of the treatments varied between the groups. A of multiple baseline design between participants of the same group was used. The results pointed that during of baseline the frequency of choice of more healthful snacks is low, but the frequency of correspondence between verbal and non verbal behavior is high. During the phase of reinforcement of verbalization, the frequency of choice of more healthful snacks is low, and so is the frequency of correspondence between verbal and non verbal behavior. In the phase of reinforcement of doing, the frequency of choice of more healthful snacks is low only when this phase precedes the reinforcement of correspondence and the reinforcement of compliance. In the phases of reinforcement of compliance and reinforcement of correspondence, the frequency of choice of more healthful food increases for the three groups. In the phase of reinforcement of verbalization 2, the frequency of choice of more healthful food was higher than in the phase of reinforcement of verbalization, being, therefore, higher the correspondence frequency. The present study suggests that verbalization has an important role to provide the target response; however it can proceed from the participant as well from the experimenter / Diversos estudos vêm analisando tratamentos que interferem na ocorrência de correspondência entre o comportamento verbal e o não verbal.
