Development of ABAQUS-MATLAB Interface for Design Optimization using Hybrid Cellular Automata and Comparison with Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization

Alen Antony (11353053) 03 January 2022 (has links)
<div>Topology Optimization is an optimization technique used to synthesize models without any preconceived shape. These structures are synthesized keeping in mind the minimum compliance problems. With the rapid improvement in advanced manufacturing technology and increased need for lightweight high strength designs topology optimization is being used more than ever.</div><div>There exist a number of commercially available software's that can be used for optimizing a product. These software have a robust Finite Element Solver and can produce good results. However, these software offers little to no choice to the user when it comes to selecting the type of optimization method used.</div><div>It is possible to use a programming language like MATLAB to develop algorithms that use a specific type of optimization method but the user himself will be responsible for writing the FEA algorithms too. This leads to a situation where the flexibility over the optimization method is achieved but the robust FEA of the commercial FEA tool is lost.</div><div>There have been works done in the past that links ABAQUS with MATLAB but they are primarily used as a tool for finite element post-processing. Through this thesis, the aim is to develop an interface that can be used for solving optimization problems using different methods like hard-kill as well as the material penalization (SIMP) method. By doing so it's possible to harness the potential of a commercial FEA software and gives the user the requires flexibility to write or modify the codes to have an optimization method of his or her choice. Also, by implementing this interface, it can also be potentially used to unlock the capabilities of other Dassault Systèmes software's as the firm is implementing a tighter integration between all its products using the 3DExperience platform.</div><div>This thesis as described uses this interface to implement BESO and HCA based topology optimization. Since hybrid cellular atomata is the only other method other than equivalent static load method that can be used for crashworthiness optimization this work suits well for the role when extended into a non-linear region.</div>

Design, Characterization And Analysis Of Electrostatic Discharge (esd) Protection Solutions In Emerging And Modern Technologies

Liu, Wen 01 January 2012 (has links)
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a significant hazard to electronic components and systems. Based on a specific processing technology, a given circuit application requires a customized ESD consideration that includes the devices’ operating voltage, leakage current, breakdown constraints, and footprint. As new technology nodes mature every 3-5 years, design of effective ESD protection solutions has become more and more challenging due to the narrowed design window, elevated electric field and current density, as well as new failure mechanisms that are not well understood. The endeavor of this research is to develop novel, effective and robust ESD protection solutions for both emerging technologies and modern complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. The Si nanowire field-effect transistors are projected by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors as promising next-generation CMOS devices due to their superior DC and RF performances, as well as ease of fabrication in existing Silicon processing. Aiming at proposing ESD protection solutions for nanowire based circuits, the dimension parameters, fabrication process, and layout dependency of such devices under Human Body Mode (HBM) ESD stresses are studied experimentally in company with failure analysis revealing the failure mechanism induced by ESD. The findings, including design methodologies, failure mechanism, and technology comparisons should provide practical knowhow of the development of ESD protection schemes for the nanowire based integrated circuits. Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are the basic elements for the emerging flexible, printable, large-area, and low-cost organic electronic circuits. Although there are plentiful studies focusing on the DC stress induced reliability degradation, the operation mechanism of OTFTs iv subject to ESD is not yet available in the literature and are urgently needed before the organic technology can be pushed into consumer market. In this work, the ESD operation mechanism of OTFT depending on gate biasing condition and dimension parameters are investigated by extensive characterization and thorough evaluation. The device degradation evolution and failure mechanism under ESD are also investigated by specially designed experiments. In addition to the exploration of ESD protection solutions in emerging technologies, efforts have also been placed in the design and analysis of a major ESD protection device, diodetriggered-silicon-controlled-rectifier (DTSCR), in modern CMOS technology (90nm bulk). On the one hand, a new type DTSCR having bi-directional conduction capability, optimized design window, high HBM robustness and low parasitic capacitance are developed utilizing the combination of a bi-directional silicon-controlled-rectifier and bi-directional diode strings. On the other hand, the HBM and Charged Device Mode (CDM) ESD robustness of DTSCRs using four typical layout topologies are compared and analyzed in terms of trigger voltage, holding voltage, failure current density, turn-on time, and overshoot voltage. The advantages and drawbacks of each layout are summarized and those offering the best overall performance are suggested at the end

Ultracapacitor/Battery Hybrid Energy Storage Systems for Electric Vehicles

Moshirvaziri, Mazhar 22 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with the design of Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) for Light Electric Vehicles (LEV) and EVs. More specifically, a tri-mode high-efficiency non-isolated half-bridge converter is developed for the LEV based HESS applications. A 2 kW, 100 V interleaved two-phase converter prototype was implemented. The peak efficiency of 97.5% and a minimum efficiency of 88% over the full load range are achieved. Furthermore, a power-mix optimizer utilizing the real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) data for the EV based HESS is proposed. For a specific design, it is shown that at the cost of less than 1.5% of the overall energy savings, the proposed scheme reduces the peak battery charge and discharge rates by 76% and 47%, respectively. A 30 kW bi-directional dc-dc converter is also designed and implemented for future deployment of the designed HESS into a prototype EV, known as A2B.

FELIPE POGGI DE ARAGAO FRAGA 10 November 2022 (has links)
[en] Recently, the topic of Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) has seen a surge in popularity. This is illustrated by the accelerated growth of apps such as Notion, Obsidian, and Roam Research, and the appearance of books like How to Take Smart Notes and Building a Second Brain. However, the area of PKM has not seen much integration with the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This opens up an interesting opportunity to apply NLP techniques to knowledge operations tasks. Our objective is the development of a Software System that uses NLP and note-taking apps to transform a siloed text collection into an interconnected and inter-navigable text collection. The system uses navigation mechanisms based on shared concepts and semantic relatedness between texts. In this study, we present a methodology to build this system, the research context, demonstrations using examples, and an evaluation to determine if the system functions properly and if the proposed connections are coherent.

Brunnars påverkan på cyklisters körbeteende : En kvantitativ undersökning kring cyklisters körbeteende vid passage av brunnslock på dubbelriktade cykelbanor / Manholes impact on cyclists’ behaviour : A quantitative survey about cyclists’ behaviour when passing by manhole covers on bi-directional cycle paths

Jändel, Simon, Kvarnefalk, Albin January 2021 (has links)
The transport system must transform to achieve a sustainable society. Region Stockholm's goal is forthe proportion of bicycle trips to more than double by 2030 and account for 20% of all trips in thecounty. Lack of maintenance and poor cycle paths account for about 60% of serious single accidentson bicycles. This increase consequently places high demands on the design and maintenance of thebicycle infrastructure. For the cycle path's comfort to be good, it is required that the cycle pathremains even, which can come into conflict with manhole covers, as subsidence often occur at andaround the manholes. The manhole covers can be experienced as unpleasant to cycle over and havelower friction than the surrounding surface. This can cause skidding, especially if the road surface iswet. Manhole covers are common on cycle paths, in this study 1 200 manhole covers were found onthe central parts of eleven regional cycle paths. These were of varying size, position in the cycle pathand height compared to the surrounding pavement. Manhole covers can be a potential obstacle oncycle paths, which reduces the available width of the cycle path. The available width of the cyclepath is the surface that is functionally possible to cycle on. Constructed width, on the other hand, isthe width the cycle path was built with without regard to any obstacles. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether manhole covers are considered an obstacle forcyclists on cycle paths and how the manhole covers affect the available width of the four study sites. The available width of the study sites is compared with recommended cycle path widths inguidelines. The study was delimited to strive for the equivalence of the study sites and that only theproperties of the manhole covers separated the study sites. Two types of manhole covers werestudied and these two types were also studied with and without edges. The results of the study show that there is a difference between situations with and without anoncoming cyclist. A majority of cyclists stay to the right of the manhole covers regardless ofoncoming cyclist or not, which may be due to their natural lateral position. When there is nooncoming cyclist, many choose to cycle to the left of the manhole covers. However, in situations ofencounter, almost no one chooses to cycle to the left of the manhole covers. The decrease in thenumber of cyclists to the left of the manhole covers at an encounter roughly corresponds to theincrease in the number of cyclists to the right of the manhole covers in the same situation. Thenumber who cycle over manhole covers differs marginally between situations with and withoutoncoming cyclists. This can be interpreted as cyclists changing sides of the manhole covers andavoiding cycling over them. At the four study sites, few people cycle over the manhole covers, whichmeans that these manhole covers should probably be seen as an obstacle that reduces the availablewidth. It can be stated that the manhole covers with edges are a greater obstacle than manhole coverswithout edges. More manholes need to be studied before it is possible to draw more generalconclusions about manhole covers on cycle paths. This applies to both the investigated manholesand other types of manholes. The available width of the study places was compared with the recommended cycle path widths inthese guidelines: “VGU”, “GCM-handboken”, “Stockholm County's regional cycle plan”, “Stockholm'scycle plan”, “Cykeln i staden” and “Solna's cycle plan”. The widths recommended in the guidelinesare not met in terms of the available width of the study places.

In this thesis, a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) was studied and simulated. All parts of the WECS are presented and discussed in detail. Furthermore, control strategies for the generator-side converter and the voltage source inverter are developed. The WECS is simulated both in grid connected and stand-alone mode. In the stand-alone mode, the WECS is supplied with an energy storage system for which a bi-directional buck/boost converter and control strategy was designed. Finally, simulation results are presented and performance of the system in various modes of operation is evaluated. Simulink/Matlab is used for modeling and simulating the WECS. At the beginning of Chapter 1, a discussion of energy crisis and renewable energy sources is held. Furthermore, information about wind energy has been reviewed and its benefits and drawbacks are examined. In addition, the structure of a wind turbine and the principles of converting wind energy into electricity are presented. In Chapter 2 all parts of the wind turbine are studied and its characteristics are specified. Even more, the model of every part in Simulink is presented. Theoretical background, structure and operation principles of PMSG are presented in detail. In Chapter 3, firstly a general presentation of converters components takes place. Then the major existing categories of converter are presented and some basic types of converters, which are generally used in WECS, are mentioned. Moreover, the chapter focuses on the converters that are used in this thesis, explaining the way they operate. After all, their models in Simulink are shown. Emphasis was given to the dc/dc boost converter whose parameters are calculated and its operation is simulated. Finally, there is a presentation of the filter which was placed at the output of the inverter. In Chapter 4, Pulse-width Modulation (PWM) and Sinusoidal Pulse-width Modulation (SPWM) techniques that are used in this thesis are described. Moreover, the control strategy for the generator-side converter with maximum power extraction is presented. The control strategy of the voltage sourced inverter is shown as well. In Chapter 5 simulation results of the grid connected WECS are presented and evaluated. On the first part of the presentation, the WECS is simulated for constant wind speed (12m/s), and in the second part for step-changed wind speed. In Chapter 6 the stand-alone operation of the WECS is studied and supplied with an energy storage system. Initially, there is an analysis of the energy storage system, which was used, and in particular the battery bank, whose characteristics are given. Moreover, a Bi-directional dc/dc Buck-Boost converter which is used to interconnect the battery bank to the dc-link is presented and modeled. Afterwards, there is a detailed description of the control strategy used in order to control charging / discharging of the battery bank. At the end of this chapter, simulation results of two different stand-alone operation modes are presented, one with constant wind speed and variable load and the other one with step-changing wind speed and constant load.
