On what grounds are children´s books selected? : A studie of the dilemmas faced by preschool teachers in active book selection and it´s consequences

Hilmersson, Ann-Louise January 2016 (has links)
This study investigates the principles and consecuences of the grounds of preschool teachers book selections for the group of children. The purpose is to show if preschool teachers take into consideration both educational and entertaining aspects, if their own feelings towards the books affects their book selections and if so in what way. The methodology for the survey was two qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey. The study was made in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The results shows that when preschool teachers choose books it is done above all to contribute to children's language development, however the fantasy creative purpose will end up in the second. On the other hand preschool teachers try to create meaningfulness for the group of children by including emotinal connection through the book selection which ultimately can create motivation for reading in children.

Μαντζουράτου, Βασιλική 24 February 2011 (has links)
In this dissertation we explore the organization and the function of the “library corner” as a space for the application of literacy practices which contribute to the transition of the students from the natural sequence of their language development to the official discourse of the educational system. Regarding the language development, children enter the pre-school environment with different levels of physical literacy, depending on the family literacy practices in which they have been participating. The transition to the official educational environment contributes to school success – and later to the consequent social development of the student. The nursery school is the first structured educational environment where official educational discourse is used. Our study used a special developed research tool to record the organization of the “library corner” and the various activities that are implemented in a series of Greek nursery schools. Our aim is to inquiry whether the activities within the function of the corner are contributing to the aforementioned transition and whether the process is supporting and empowering students towards their further developmental involvement with books. Our findings are statistically analyzed and presented descriptively. The analysis tries to identify and correlate factors that may have a positive or a negative effect in the transitional functionality of the “library corner”.

Vilken känsla? : Flickors fasination för skräcklitteratur / Which feeling? : Girls fascination for horror books

Bäckström, Tove January 2020 (has links)
Hur uppfattar flickor genus i skräcklitteratur? / When learning the subject Swedish in school, students will meet different types of texts from different times. For some students, their free book choices will be in the horror genre. This study aims to increase the knowledge of how girls choose books in the horror literature genre, what they want to experience from reading, based on the questions: Based on what factors do girls choose horror literature? How do girls perceive gender in horror literature? What feelings do girls experience when reading horror literature? The study has a phenomenographic approach since it investigates which factors influence girls' free book choices, their perceptions of gender in the horror genre and how girls perceive the emotions created in themselves when reading horror literature. A qualitative method is used and data was collected using surveys and interviews. The results of the study show that girls choose their horror book based on the factors: Genre, the layout of the book and the back text. The girls did not base their book selection on the characters' gender and could find an identification with characters regardless of gender. Excitement, fear, joy and to some extent powerlessness were feelings that the girls described when they were reading horror literature.

The fiction problem in public libraries : a study with special reference to Cape Town City Library Service

Schirmer, Gillian Russell January 1988 (has links) (PDF)
Includes bibliography. / The focal point of this study emanates from both personal observations formed in public library branch work and questions raised in the subject literature to the effect that tension appears to exist between the wants of the majority of users and the perception of the dominant goals of the public library by their staff, resulting in differing views as to the book selection policy of this institution. Book selection policies have been taken to reflect the attitudes of library staff towards users' wants in terms of their adherence to the tenets of Anglo-American public library objectives.
