Adaption of the booklet category test for application in a Chinese culture

The Booklet Category Test (BCT) is a modified, highly portable version of the Halstead Category Test that has been shown to be very sensitive to brain damage. The BCT is commonly used in neuropsychological assessment in Western countries, however, no information on psychometric properties of the BCT had been report in the Chinese population thus far. This is a single-center, hospital-based, prospective, case-controlled cognitive instrument validation study. The study objective is to examine the criterion, convergent and divergent validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and ease of administration of the BCT in Chinese. Ten healthy controls, 12 patients with focal frontal contusions and ten patients with non-frontal contusions were recruited. The Chinese BCT did not differentiate between patients with cerebral contusions from controls, or between patients with focal frontal contusions from those with non-frontal contusions using receiver operating curve analyses. However, it showed good convergent validity with tests of spatial reasoning and had acceptable divergent validity, excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s ss= .928) and test-retest reliability (ICC = .982, p < .982) and was generally well accepted by local participants. Evaluation of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Booklet Written in Chinese for Chinese-American Patients

Class of 2009 Abstract / OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an educational booklet written in Chinese designed for Chinese-Americans with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Healthcare professionals who work with Chinese-American patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and proficiency in writing Chinese developed an educational booklet on Type 2 diabetes. An expert panel of Chinese American pharmacists and dietitians evaluated the booklet by rating language appropriateness, ease of reading, ease of locating information, overall presentation of the booklet, and usefulness of the booklet in a practice setting. Topics of the booklet were assessed for accuracy, relevance, and irrelevance. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 8 healthcare professionals. In the expert panel, there were five pharmacists and three dietitians. Of the three dietitians, two were certified diabetes educator. The panel rated the booklet very highly; the mean overall rating was 22.4(±1.2) with 25 being the highest possible score. Overall, 100% of the evaluators would recommend this booklet for patients in their setting. CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals found the booklet to be accurate, culturally relevant, and useful for their Chinese- American patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

A Revised Instruction Set for the Booklet Category Test

Eighty-eight (N = 88) non-brain-injured adults were tested with one of two versions of the Booklet Category Test (BCT). Forty-four (N = 44) individuals were tested with the standard version of the BCT, and forty-four (N = 44) were tested with a revised BCT in which between-subtest cueing was removed, called the Noncued Category Test (NCT). The results of this study indicate that removal of cueing instructions changes the Category test significantly. Subjects administered the NCT scored significantly more errors than those who were administered the standard Category test. While BCT scores correlated significantly with nonverbal intelligence scores, NCT scores did not. However, the difference in these correlations was not significant, indicating that the intelligence aspect measured in the two versions is not different. Neither the BCT nor the NCT correlated significantly with the Wisconsin Card Sort, Word Fluency, Stroop, or Trail Making Test. It is recommended that the NCT be administered to circumscribed clinical populations in order to best utilize present findings.

VIDEOGAMES, THEIR TEXTUAL OBJECTS, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF A MULTI-MODAL NARRATIVE

This paper was developed from my reflections on an interdisciplinary critical making experiment in which I, visual artists, and computer programmers wrote, designed, and made a videogame, entitled Anathema, and a "Complete Companion" for the game that served as its booklet. I argue for the importance and continuing relevance of booklets and other textual objects accompanying videogames as there is no established scholarship on the topic and no ongoing debate or dialogue on the issue within the field of game studies. I demonstrate the ways that multiple modes of media, i.e. the game and its external objects, allow the narrative to break free of the individual media's constraints and overcome the perceived binary between mechanics-oriented and narrative-oriented videogames. I examine the evolution of booklets' roles in videogames by looking at key examples from early, millennial, and contemporary examples, including F-Zero, Diablo II, and the Mass Effect series. I also compare examples across genres, markets, and distribution methods, including independently produced and digitally distributed games. Finally, I draw on my own work on Anathema, the relationship between form and content within that project, and the role of the booklet therein to demonstrate the narrative and mechanical advantages of a multi-modal videogame. I conclude that while innovative mechanics can contribute to a multi-modal narrative in-game, the incorporation of both analogue and digital textual objects facilitates a more complete interaction with the art form.

Infant wellbeing and monitoring: An observation of the Road to Health Booklet in Masiphumelele

The South African government monitors and tracks the health of newborns and the growth of children. The Department of Health (DoH) does this monitoring using the Road to Health Booklet (RtHB). In this dissertation I analyse the use of the booklet in the township of Masiphumelele in Cape Town. The state produced booklet is intended for the child and mother as a patient-held medical health record. Liaw (1993) defines a patient-held record as notes or space provided on a document for the recording of follow up appointments for further investigation by medical doctors. The RtHB is used to record the child’s development, immunisations and HIV related information from birth to the age of twelve years. The dissertation results from ethnographic research with eight black Xhosa1 mothers and caregivers with children under the age of five years old. Mosley, and Chen, (1984), argue that in developing countries where standard child healthcare has been made available, children should survive the first five years of life. In my research, during the period of six weeks between July, August and September 2017, I followed the booklet in to Masiphumelele. From my observation and semi-structured interviews, looking at the state’s role of ‘pastoral’ care, child wellbeing and living in a township, and recording, under the theme of child wellbeing, certain concepts emerged. These concepts were state power, mothering, caring for children, responsibilisation, gender, kinship, fatherhood, child wellbeing knowledge production, social networking. In this dissertation I use ethnographic findings, accompanied by my own personal narratives. I argue that tracking child wellbeing through this booklet, the state exercises what Foucault (1982) referred to as ‘pastoral power’ in ensuring the wellbeing of the populations.

Research in the last decade has focused on the impact of the caregiver role (Cantor, 1983), the nature of caregivers (Brody, 1981, 1983), and the stress and burden associated with caregiver (Zarit, Todd and Zarit, 1986). Health professionals working with caregivers have attempted to focus on interventions to reduce feelings of burden and to increase effective coping. Evaluation of educational interventions to reduce caregiver stress and burden has been a recent research focus. Unfortunately, research has shown that it is altruistic to believe that caregiver stress and burden can be alleviated by educational interventions. Family caregivers are faced with the task of learning about the nature and complexity of dementia and the unusual behaviours which accompany Alzheimer's disease. A resource booklet, written to assist caregivers to learn about the disease, about management strategies and about their own feelings may be more effective than interventions to reduce stress. The evaluation focused on whether the resource booklet would provide information which family caregivers would perceive to be relevant and useful. The evaluation was conducted using a convenience sample of ten caregivers. Two time intervals were used to collect information on caregivers' reactions to the resource booklet; one week following the initial reading of the booklet and 4-6 weeks post-reading. A written questionnaire at time one, and follow-up telephone interviews at time two, were used to measure caregivers' reactions to the booklet. Results indicated that the information in the booklet was useful in assisting caregivers to manage care, and that the caregivers found the booklet easy to read and the format acceptable. / Thesis / Master of Science (Teaching)

Detection of Malingering on Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices and the Booklet Category Test

The capacity of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) and the Booklet Category Test (BCT) to discriminate between groups of brain-injured, simulated malingering, and normal participants was investigated in this study. Exploratory analyses were also conducted to examine the differences between groups categorized as sophisticated and naive fakers. Clinical decision rules and discriminant function analyses were utilized to identify malingerers. Clinical decision rules ranged in hit rates from 41% to 78%, in sensitivity from 2% to 100%, and in specificity from 86% to 100%. Discriminant functions ranged in hit rates from 81% to 86%, in sensitivity from 68% to 73% and in specificity from 82% to 87%. Overall, the least helpful detection method examined was below chance responding on either measure, while the most efficient was gross errors for SPM.

Mesmo atingindo mais de 70% dos cães e gatos adultos, a doença periodontal tem seus efeitos locais e sistêmicos desconhecidos ou desconsiderados por muitos médicos veterinários. Isto ocorre devido à falta de informação sobre odontologia veterinária na grade curricular. Desta forma, estes profissionais instauram tratamentos incompletos ou incorretos para esta afecção, podendo gerar lesões iatrogênicas aos pacientes e tornando-se candidatos a processos éticos e civis. Na área da saúde, além do domínio técnico e ensino da ética, sugere-se a construção e distribuição de materiais educativos para orientação ao correto diagnóstico e tratamento de afecções, como forma de prevenir o erro médico. Sendo assim, no intuito de oferecer educação complementar, este estudo tem como objetivo a elaboração e validação de uma cartilha educativa em formato digital e livre distribuição, para despertar o interesse dos médicos veterinários a respeito da doença periodontal em cães e gatos. Esta cartilha destina-se aos médicos veterinários não especializados, porém atuantes em odontologia veterinária, a fim de reduzir, nesta afecção, a ocorrência de diagnósticos e tratamentos incompletos ou incorretos. / Affecting more than 70% of adult cats and dogs, periodontal disease frequently has its local and systemic effects unknown or disregarded by veterinarians. This occurs due to lack of information about veterinary dentistry in college curriculum. Thus, these professionals choose incomplete or incorrect treatments to this condition, causing iatrogenic lesions to patients and becoming targets of ethical and civil lawsuits. In the healthcare sector, besides technical skills and teaching medical ethics, the construction and distribution of educational materials are suggested as an option to prevent medical errors from occurring. Therefore, in order to offer complementary education, this study aims to formulate and validate a digital educational booklet, with free distribution, as an attempt to make veterinarians interested about periodontal disease in dogs and cats. The intention of this material is to achieve veterinarians that work with veterinary dentistry even without being specialized, as an attempt to reduce the occurrence of incomplete or incorrect diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Ältere und auch pflegebedürftige Menschen werden den Alltag in den Zahnarztpraxen in den kommenden Jahren immer stärker prägen. Mit zunehmender Gebrechlichkeit der Betagten und Hochbetagten sollte sich die zahnmedizinische Behandlung in eine zahnmedizinische Betreuung wandeln. Auch bei einer, im Vergleich zu früher, später eintretenden Pflegebedürftigkeit sind in der Zukunft bei vielen Pflegebedürftigen die zweiten und dritten Zähne zu versorgen. Leider ist festzustellen, dass die zahnmedizinische Versorgung in Pflegeeinrichtungen noch nicht ausreichend standardisiert ist. Von den Pflegebedürftigen in Sachsen, Berlin und Nordrhein Westfalen besaßen nur 18,6 % stationär Pflegebedürftige und 41,2 % ambulant Pflegebedürftige ein zahnmedizinisches Bonusheft. Die Verteilung war regional sehr unterschiedlich. Anteilig besaßen die Pflegebedürftigen in Sachsen am häufigsten ein Bonusheft. Das Vorhandensein des Bonusheftes war weder von Alter oder Geschlecht abhängig. Der Verlust einer besseren Bonusregelung bei Zahnersatzleistungen wird dabei von den Pflegedienstleitungen und dem medizinischen Dienst völlig außer Acht gelassen, teilweise sind die Bonusregelungen auch nicht ausreichend bekannt. Die Organisation eines kontinuierlichen Konsildienstes könnte mit der Anforderung an das Führen eines zahnmedizinischen Bonusheftes verbessert werden. Hierzu müssen aber die Informationen zum Bonusheft gezielt an die Heimleitungen, die Heimaufsichten, die Heimräte, die Angehörigen und an den medizinischen Dienst herangetragen werden.
