Vers une meilleure compatibilité ciment/mâchefer (MIDND) dans la formulation de matériaux cimentaires intégrant un ciment sulfo-alumineux / Towards a better / MSWI bottom ash compatibility in the formulation of cimentitious materials integrating a sulfo-aluminate cement

Antoun, Marc 07 March 2019 (has links)
In a world where circular economy and the valorization of raw materials is taking a greater importance, municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash is identified as potentially renewable resource in the construction field and more specifically in cementitious materials like mortar and concrete. Given the origin of the bottom ash and in order to have a better cement/MSWI bottom ash compatibility, the fraction used was as refined as possible by removing ferrous, non-ferrous and unwanted materials. The choice of the cement used is a critical factor as well because it affects the quality of the end product since MSWI bottom ash has particular physicochemical properties. The work in this PhD studies the advantages of using a sulfo-aluminate cement to valorize an improved 0/2 mm fraction of bottom ash that has been developed to be used in cementitious matrices. The first part presents the results of the mortar sample mixes containing bottom ash in a substitution by volume of the standard sand. To better highlight the effect of using a sulfo-aluminate (CSA), CSA mortars containing bottom ash were compared to a Portland cement (OPC) mortars, with substitution rates of 25 %, 50 %, 75 % and 100 % were used. A study of the porosity was then conducted at 90 days ; it shows that the pores larger to 50 nm are remarkably less present for CSA mortars. This thesis brings forward a major and innovative result : the level of alkalinity of the mortar plays an important role in the release of hydrogen gas after mixing and before setting. The presence of these gases creates large porosity in the hardened mortar samples. The second part studies the physical and microstructural aspects of the mortars after being immersed in aggressive environments : pure water and sulfate solution. The substitution rates used in this experiment were 50 % and 100 % by volume as well as the reference mortars with no bottom ash. These samples were then studied in the SEM which showed that CSA/bottom ash mortars were clearly less affected than the OPC/bottom ash mortars. This was highlighted by the porosity, the cracking and the depth of degraded zone.

The dissolution of limestone, coal fly ash and bottom ash in wet flue gas desulphurization

Koech, Lawrence 03 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology): Vaal University of Technology / Strict environmental regulation on flue gas emission has led to the implementation of FGD technologies in power stations. Wet FGD technology is commonly used because it has high SO2 removal efficiency, high sorbent utilization and due to availability of the sorbent (limestone) used. SO2 is removed by passing flue gas through the absorber where it reacts with the slurry containing calcium ions which is obtained by dissolution. This study presents the findings of the dissolution of a calcium-based material (limestone) for wet FGD process. This was done using a pH stat apparatus and adipic acid as acid titrant. Adipic acid was used because of its buffering effect in wet FGD process. The conditions used for this study are similar to what is encountered in a wet FGD process. The extent of dissolution was determined by analyzing the amount of calcium ions in solution at different dissolution periods. The dissolution kinetics were correlated to the shrinking core model and it was found out that chemical reaction at the surface of the particle is the rate controlling step. This study also investigated the dissolution of coal fly ash and bottom ash. Their dissolution kinetics showed that the diffusion through the product layer was the rate controlling step due to an ash layer formed around the particle. The formation of ash layer was attributed to pozzolanic reaction products which is calcium-alumino-silicate (anorthite) compounds were formed after dissolution. The effect of fly ash on the dissolution of rate of limestone was also studied using response surface methodology. Limestone reactivity was found to increase with increase in the amount of fly ash added and the pH was found to be strong function of the rate constant compared to other dissolution variables. The presence of silica and alumina in fly ash led to a significant increase in the specific surface area due to hydration products formed after dissolution. / Eskom

[en] BEHAVIOR OF CLAYEY SOIL STABILIZED WITH MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE ASHES UNDER STATIC LOAD / [pt] COMPORTAMENTO DE UM SOLO ARGILOSO ESTABILIZADO COM CINZAS DE RESÍDUO SÓLIDO URBANO SOB CARREGAMENTO ESTÁTICO

CRISTIAN CHACÓN QUISPE 04 October 2013 (has links)
[en] Management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and its subsequent reuse or not is an existing problem in Brazil and the world. In Brazil, the production of energy through incineration of MSW is still in its initial stage, for example, with the implementation of Usina Verde on campus at UFRJ, with the consequent production of byproducts, such as fly and bottom ashes. This study presents the behavior of a colluvial clayey soil stabilized with ashes from MSW under static load, with the main objective to evaluate the influence of these ashes mixed with the soil for possible applications in geotechnical works. For this characterization were performed physical, chemical and mechanical tests, as Proctor compaction tests Normal isotropically consolidated and drained triaxial (CID) for the pure and soil-ash mixtures. Were evaluated the influence of the ash content (20 per cent, 30 per cent and 40 per cent fly ash and botton ash) and of curing time (30 and 60 days). The results show that all mixtures soil-ash have better shear strength compared to the pure soil, where the soil- fly ash mixtures showed better results compared to mixtures of soil- bottom ash. The variation of the ash content added to the soil, without curing, shows that higher levels of ash the cohesion decrease and the opposite occurs with the bottom ash. Respect to the curing time, in most cases there was as improvement of the behavior of mixtures soil-ash compared to that obtained without curing. The ash content (fly or bottom), curing time and confinement stress influence the volumetric deformation to soil-ash mixtures, showed lower volumetric deformations to higher concentrations of ash and longer curing times. The mixtures with 40 per cent fly ash and 30 per cent bottom ash, showed the best characteristics of strength and could be used as stabilizer in the studied soil, compliance requirements geotechnical and environmental, in addition to lower labor costs and give a nobler destiny for the ashes of MSW.

[en] This study presents the behavior of a sandy soil stabilized with municipal solid waste ash, and lime. In order to evaluate the applicability of mixtures soil-ash and soil-fly ash-lime for using in geotechnical projects as layers of landfills, embankment on soft soils and slope stability, an experimental campaign is presented. Thus, physical, chemical and mechanical (isotropically consolidated-drained triaxial test) characterization tests were performed for each material and mixtures. It was used 3 percent of lime in the mixtures soil- fly ash-lime, being added in replacement to the dry weight of fly ash. Were evaluated the influence of ash content (30 and 40 percent), type of ash (fly ash and bottom ash) and curing time (0, 60 and 90 days) for mixtures containing fly ash and lime. The results have shown that mixtures with both kinds of ashes present a satisfactory behavior, increasing or maintaining the shear strength parameters similar to the pure material. For both kinds of ashes the variation of the content has not provided significant changes in the strength parameters, therefore, 40 percent can be considered as best content, once it provides a bigger destination of the residue. Comparing fly and bottom ash, the last has presented better results than fly ash. For mixtures with lime and cure, it has been observed better results for 60 days of cure, with greater gain of strength. Two molding methods have been used for preparing the mixture specimen, being obtained a better result with pre modeled specimen. Therefore, the use of municipal solid waste ash for stabilizing this kind of soil for using in the cited works, could minimize the current problems of waste disposal, contribute with the reduction of consumption of natural resources and give a noble use for this material.

Φωτοπούλου, Μαρία 11 January 2010 (has links)
Τα στοιχεία, που προσδιορίστηκαν είναι τα Αg, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hf, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, U, V και Zn. / One of the most important lignite deposits of Western Turkey is located in the basin of Mugla. The Mugla basin consists of two NW-SE direction grabens, which are separated by a wide rise of the basement that creates the sub-basins of Yatağan and Milas. Southern, the basement is consisted of the Lyccian nappes, which contain a cluster of ocean and continental origin rocks, while northern is consisted of metamorphic rocks, such as schists, gneiss, amphibolites and marbles of the Menderes Mass. The present study focuses on the lignite of Milas region and its combustion solid by-products (fly ash and bottom ash) from Yeniköy, Yatağan and Kemerköy areas in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to estimate the mobility of elements and trace elements in the exploitation of the lignite deposits for generating power in the region of Mugla in Turkey. The object of the present study lies in the geochemical study of lignite and its combustion products and in the determination of the mobility of trace elements during the combustion of lignite and the leaching of lignite and its by-products, under pH 5 and 8.5 conditions. In addition, several laboratory analyses are performed, including the proximate and the elemental analysis, the coal-petrographical examination and the mineralogical analysis of all samples. During these laboratory analyses are determined the moisture, the ash, the content of volatile components and the content of C, H, N and S of lignite and lignite combustion products the permanent carbon, the calorific value and the reflectivity of lignite. The contents of trace elements in lignite, in fly ash and in bottom ash are determined using an ELAN 6100 Perkin Elmer ® instrument. The elements, which were identified, are Ag, As, B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hf, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, U, V and Zn. According to the trace elements contents of lignite and its combustion products, the mobility during combustion was determined using the Enrichment Factor (RE). Very low rate of enrichment and thus, strong volatility, have the elements As, Cd, Mo, Pb and Sr. Medium volatility is being observed in the elements Ag, B, Cr, Ni, U, V, Zn, while all the rest have low volatility due to their existence in the part of the lignite co-products that remain in the ash of the Thermal Power Plants. Furthermore, leaching experiments under pH 5 and 8.5 conditions took place to estimate the mobility of trace elements from lignite and its by-products using the Relative Mass Leached (RML) and Leaching Intensity (Ιl). The above results, under pH 5 and 8.5 conditions, indicate as more mobile trace elements in the lignite the elements As, B, Mn, Sr, in the fly ash the elements Cr, Li, Mo and Sr, and in the bottom ash the elements Li, Mo, Sr. In order to determine the geochemical affinity and the mode of occurrence of trace elements in the samples of lignite and its combustion by-products and to describe their behavior during the leaching at different pH conditions, a statistical process of the elemental analysis results is performed. In particular, the methodology of factor analysis R-type is used in the elemental analysis results, in the leaching values of trace elements of all samples, separately for pH 5 and pH 8,5 and in the fly ash and the bottom ash minerals.

Contribution à la modélisation du comportement mécanique d'un matériau hétérophasé rematérialisé issu d'un mâchefer d'incinération d'ordures ménagères : valorisation en Génie Civil / Contributions to the modeling of the mechanical behavior of the heterophase rematerialize material from a municipal solid waste incineration : Recycling in civil engineering

LE, Ngoc Hung 15 December 2011 (has links)
Bottom ash is the solid residua coming from domestic waste combustion in the furnace of incineration factory. The utilization of bottom ash in the field of Civil Engineering is necessary because the municipal wastes are increasing causes many environmental problems while the materials of Civil Engineering dwindle. The bottom ash was used for a decade in the field of civil engineering; however the mechanical characteristics of material “bottom ash” are not very well known. This work of thesis contributes to improving knowledge of the mechanical characteristics of bottom ash. After the determination of the geotechnical characteristics (parameters of nature, mechanical parameters, parameters of state), chemical and environmental characteristics, the potential of use of these bottom ash is evaluated according to the « Circulaire de 9 Mai, 1994 » and according to the technical guide SETRA-LCPC 2000 « Réalisation des remblais et des couches de forme ».In the experimental part, the oedometric and triaxial tests are carried out. For oedometric tests, the effect of compaction energy and immersion of specimens as well as the effect of the loading rate of the test were evaluated. The effect of loading rate is also evaluated by some sets of triaxial tests. From the triaxial tests, the mechanical parameters such as the Young’s modulus, the Poisson‘s ratio, the characteristic angle, the dilatancy angle, the cohesion and the friction angle were determined. These mechanical properties are specific to the material and can be integrated in a diagram of dimensioning specific to the structures of roadways based on bottom ash. The studied principal parameters allow us to evaluate the influence of the effective confining pressure. The evolution of the deformation modulus versus to the axial deformation and finally, the variation of the deviator stress versus to the mean effective pressure were also analyzed. A set of points of the yielding state was determined from triaxial tests and it specifies significantly the shape of yielding surface of our bottom ash. Finally, the triaxial tests were simulated numerically. This part is a contribution to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of bottom ash. The model of Mohr-Coulomb and Nova were chosen to characterize the evolution of the material “bottom ash” under the influence of external mechanical actions. These are typical examples of model soil completely identifiable only through traditional triaxial tests. The simulation of triaxial tests is carried out using the CESAR-LCPC software. The results are found to be promising.

Bertils, Elsa, Elvingson, Herman January 2019 (has links)
Immense amounts of waste are generated daily by our society, and the management of these streams is a critical societal function. Part of this work is reusing and recycling materials with attractive properties, which is also an imperative step towards circular material flows. Although, the reuse of waste-based resources entails a conflict between efficient use of resources and minimal environmental toxicity, which hampers the reuse. The labeling of a resource as waste also makes using or trading the resource problematic, both regarding regulations, but also concerns from the society regarding toxicity or quality. A way of increasing the reuse of waste streams is initiating and organizing a functioning trade with the material. This study aims at clarifying how new markets for waste base products can emerge and evolve. This aim is formulated as identifying the functions that needs to be fulfilled for a new market for waste-based products to function, and what can be done to fulfill these functions. The study is designed as a case study including four cases where waste in some way is put back to use through trade. This reuse is studied as a market, with buyers, seller and brokers encased in institutions. To expose the role of policy instruments in organizing waste-based markets, there is one specific policy instrument per case for which the effect is analyzed deeper. The main empirics has been collected through interviews with actors on the four case markets, aiming to identify typical events in the evolution of the markets, and what is perceived as important as of today. The case markets are residual sludge from biogas production and from waste water treatment being used as fertilizer, and the residual gravel from waste incineration in Sweden and Denmark being used as a construction material. On these markets, the degree of actual trade varies, as well as the maturity of the markets. By studying and comparing four markets for waste-based resources, and considering the perspectives from actors at different ends of the respective resources value chain, twelve market functions have been identified within three market components. The component institutions and networks contain functions not directly related to the supply- or demand-side of the markets but rather the legitimacy and authorization process, ability of the actors to identify with their roles in the value chain, and how certifications and actor-initiatives can form common grounds for actors in the value chain. In the component supply the waste producer’s responsibility and means of influence over the quality and quantity of the resource is identified as functions. Brokers might play a critical role and policy instruments is needed to increase the producers means of influencing the waste streams, and to regulate the use of the resource. In the component of demand marketing, systems for quality assertion, and niche management are identified as methods to fulfill critical functions. Waste based resources by nature appears as a secondary material flow in a process, and therefore it is not naturally integrated in the business model of any actor. The waste-label forces the resource to comply to rules and regulations perceived problematic, while buyer demands are perceived as unfairly promoting virgin resources and getting societal acceptance of the resource is an uphill battle. By studying the behaviors and needs of market actors, and the role of policy instruments during the course of market evolution, opportunities has been identified as to how policy instruments can fulfill the varying key market functions. For each of the identified functions, it is suggested how policy instruments can contribute, or help the market actors, to fulfill the function.

Novel approaches in determining baseline information on annual disposal rates and trace element content of U.S. coal combustion residues : a response to EPA’s June 2010 proposed disposal rule

Chwialkowski, Natalia Ewa 14 February 2011 (has links)
Although products of coal combustion (PCCs) such as coal ash are currently exempted from classification as a hazardous waste in the United States under the 1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now revising a proposed rule to modify disposal practices for these materials in order to prevent contamination of ground- and surface water sources by leached trace elements. This paper analyzes several aspects of EPA’s scientific reasoning for instating the rule, with the intent of answering the following questions: 1) Are EPA’s cited values for PCC production and disposal accurate estimates of annual totals?; 2) In what ways can EPA’s leaching risk modeling assessment be improved?; 3) What is the total quantity of trace elements contained within all PCCs disposed annually?; and 4) What would be the potential costs and feasibility of reclassifying PCCs not under RCRA, but under existing NRC regulations as low-level radioactive waste (LLRW)? Among the results of my calculations, I found that although EPA estimates for annual PCC disposal are 20% larger than industry statistics, these latter values appear to be closer to reality. Second, EPA appears to have significantly underestimated historical PCC disposal: my projections indicate that EPA’s maximum estimate for the quantity of fly ash landfilled within the past 90 years was likely met by production in the last 30 years alone, if not less. Finally, my analysis indicates that while PCCs may potentially meet the criteria for reclassification as low-level radioactive waste by NRC, the cost of such regulation would be many times that of the EPA June proposed disposal rule ($220-302 billion for PCCs disposed in 2008 alone, versus $1.47 billion per year for the Subtitle C option and $236-587 million for Subtitle D regulatory options). / text

Gestion et valorisation des Mâchefers d’Incinération de Déchets non Dangereux (MIDND) : Etude du comportement des polluants inorganiques traces au cours de la maturation et en fonction de la granulométrie / Management et valorization of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash : Studying the behavior of inorganic trace pollutants during weathering and as a function of particle size

Gonzales Ramirez, Maria-Lorena 04 December 2014 (has links)
Current challenge of Municipal Solid waste Incineration (MSWI) bottom ash management lays in its valorization, mainly to be used in road construction projects. The process must take into account environmental regulations and conduct rigorous monitoring from production to utilization. One constraint in the assessment of MSWI bottom ash is related to quality criteria which is becoming more restrictive. Among potential pollutants that can cause environmental use restrictions are metal trace elements (MTE), whose behavior based on weathering and grain size is not yet well known and represent one of greatest concern. In this thesis, the developed research approach defined the favorable conditions for Cu, Cr, Pb, Sb, Ni and Zn release. The aforementioned approach is based on three pillars: The first pillar focuses on the development of a pertinent characterization method for bottom ash (including the polluting organic and mineral fraction) aiming at a better assessment of its properties. The initial study matrix, taken from an industrial site, was carefully analyzed from both, physico-chemical and environmental performances. Geochemical modeling based on physico-chemical and leaching data, allowed to identify the main mineral phases and to simulate material behavior with the purpose of predicting the evolution of MSWI bottom ash in specific storage or valorization conditions. The second pillar describes the impact of weathering conditions and size partitioning on MSWI bottom ash quality evolution. Three different weathering conditions (natural on industrial scale heap; accelerated on small heap; and forced) were studied. The results showed that changes in the chemical and mineralogical composition of MSWI bottom ash as well as in its size fractions are more significant when the weathering proceed. The natural accelerated weathering and the forced carbonation limited the leaching of Cu, Pb and Zn, whereas, the leaching of Cr, Sb, Cl and the SO42- increased as pH decreased. The third pillar focuses on the study of MSWI bottom ash alternative utilization as secondary raw material for the typically practiced road sub-layers construction. It consisted of incorporating MSWI bottom ash in a self-compacting material used for pavement sub-layer or coated road shoulders structures. A formulated material was obtained by mixing MSWI bottom ash, water and cement as a hydraulic binder. The results of the mechanical, geotechnical and environmental assessment are promising for MISWI bottom ash potential use in road construction.
