The Residential Patterns of Chicago in 1940: A Study of the Burgess Zonal Hypothesis

Kucsma, Lillian 04 1900 (has links)

The Burgess concentric zone model was assessed using census data for Chicago community areas in 1940. Burgess' model implies that the lower-income residents live in the center of the city while upper-income residents live on the periphery of the city. Using occupation as a determinant of socio-economic status, location quotients were calculated to determine patterns of residential differientiation. It was found that upper-income residents did indeed reside in the peripheral areas of the city, but they also lived near the central business district. The lakefront amenities were the primary reason for this residential pattern. Many low income residents lived near the center of the city, but many were also found to live in the suburbs due to industrial decentralization. Thus, the lakefront amenities and the suburban industries are the primary causes of the distortion of the Burgess model. However, this distortion does not suggest the Burgess zonal hypothesis is inaccurate. The discrepancies may be attributable to the uneven growth of cities through the "filtering" process.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE: THE SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPLICATIONS OF MUSIC IN BURGESS'S NOVEL AND ITS PRESENTATION IN KUBRICK'S FILM ADAPTATION

VYHLIDALOVÁ, Nikola January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis seeks to provide a thorough analysis of the significance and implications of music in the novel A Clockwork Orange and compare it to the role of music in the film adaptation based on this novel. Anthony Burgess, the author of the novel was an English writer and composer, whose work inspired an American film director Stanley Kubrick to make a film adaptation of the novel. The first part of this thesis deals with the life of the author of the novel, focusing mainly on the influence of music on his life. The thesis further explores the relation between music and man, music and literature, and examines the concept of music in general. The crucial part of the thesis analyses the use and function of music in the novel, provides the interpretation of the novel in terms of music and lastly, it compares the concept of music in the novel with the film adaptation.

Moneyers of England, 973-1086

Piercy, Jeremy Lee January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines one labourer group within developing urban society in England during the tenth and eleventh centuries in order to address both its status and whether the internal workplace organisation of this group might reflect on the complexity of an Anglo-Saxon 'state'. In reviewing the minting operation of late Anglo-Saxon England, and the men in charge of those mints, a better picture of the social history of pre-Conquest England is realised. These men, the moneyers responsible for producing the king's coinage, were likely part of the thegnly or burgess class and how they organised themselves might reflect broader trends in how those outside of the artistocracy acted in response to royal directives. In order to address this, a database combining information from multiple catalogues, coin cabinets, and online repositories was developed in Part I and is presented in Part II. The Moneyers of England Database, 973-1086 consists of 3,646 periods of moneyer activity, derived from 28,576 individual coins produced at ninety-nine geographic locations. Parts III and IV provide potential uses for the database through two different types of study. Part III argues that the mints were primarily controlled and operated by families. Pointing to the repetition of the protothemes amongst the moneyers on a large scale across nearly all the mint locations known from the 970s to 1086, I argue that the mints were dominated by a few select families that maintained authority through wars and conquests. Part IV presents two new theories on late Anglo-Saxon mint organisation. The first theory is that groups of moneyers would begin and end activity within the mints together, most often within family units, but regularly in conjunction with other minting families in the same location. The second theory is that these groups would operate in rotation. The moneyers would operate for a set period of time, then withdraw in favour of another member of their dynasty before returning to activity at a later date. I conclude that this was potentially, if not likely, in response to royal imposition on the mints restricting the number of coinages that a moneyer could be responsible for, and take profit on, consecutively. The thesis is structured with a brief introduction and literature review, inclusive of discussion on the status of the moneyers and the concept of an Anglo-Saxon 'state', followed by a methodological section that outlines the creation of the Moneyers of England Database, 973-1086, as well as limitations in the source material. This is followed by the database, two analysis sections, and the conclusion. There are two appendices. The first appendix is an insert diagram of all 425 moneyers in operation in London between 973 and 1086. The second is the coinage record from which this work is derived.

The first study of the micro-fauna of middle Cambrian olistoliths in the Argentine Precordillera

Fahlgren, Elise, Tranvik, Maria January 2015 (has links)
This study implies a survey of a somewhat unexplored Cambrian carbonate formation in the Argentine Precordillera (AP) located in western Argentina, close to the city of San José de Jáchal. The carbonate platform of the AP is a unique piece of the South American geology and is in this study partly surveyed and compared with the Stephen Formation of northern Canada, a middle Cambrian unit renowned for its contents of exceptionally well preserved soft bodied fossils named the Burgess Shale biota. The investigated formation consists of an olistolith among the several Los Túneles Olistoliths at the Western Precordillera. The olistolith originates from the Cambrian Period and lies embedded in younger material with an age and history up for debate by several paleontologists and biostratigraphers. Shallow investigations have shown that these rocks may have similar properties to rocks of the Stephen Formation. There are only a few known rock assemblages on Earth showing Burgess Shale-type (BST) preservation and if the Los Túneles Olistolith proves to possess BST preservation it would be of great substance for the geological researchers of Argentina. The olistolith has in this study been explored by gathering samples in field and dissolving them in acid to investigate possible fossil content. The aim is thus to ascertain whether or not the Los Túneles Olistolith may contain especially well preserved fossils. This is the first study ever made of the microfauna in a middle Cambrian unit in the whole of South America, and hence it will tell if further investigations would be of interest. This survey determines that the Los Túneles Olistolith actually consists of three olistoliths encased in matrix, do not contain BST preservation and that further studies are not probable to show otherwise. The fossil findings, such as Chancelloriidae Chancelloria, Hexactinellida Recticulosa and Mollusca Hyolitha establish that the three Los Túneles Olistoliths originate from middle Cambrian while the matrix surrounding the olistolith is determined to be of Devonian age.

TAXONOMY, TAPHONOMY AND PALEOECOLOGY OF A NEW BURGESS SHALE-TYPE LAGERSTÄTTE FROM THE MACKENZIE MOUNTAINS, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, CANADA

2014 September 1900 (has links)
The middle Cambrian (Drumian) Rockslide Formation is a deeper-water succession of mixed carbonates and siliciclastics. At the Ravens Throat River location it hosts a Burgess Shale-type (BST) deposit. The BST units are found in two separate 1m thick horizons of green-coloured calcareous mudstone and contain a biota similar to that of the Wheeler and Marjum formations of Utah, and to some extent the Burgess Shale itself. The biota is low in diversity and preserves mainly robust soft-tissue parts. The lithologically heterogeneous composition of the formation (shale, dolomite, lime mudstone, sandstone, mudstone) and absence of metamorphism offer an opportunity to analyze the depositional environment and taphonomy of this deeper water unit. Geochemical analysis including, trace elements, organic carbon, biomarker, and synchrotron were attempted and yielded varying results. Trace element ratios, particularly V/Sc, indicate low oxygenation of the bottom waters during the deposition of the fossil-bearing interval. These results differ from most other BST deposits, which suggest that oxygenated bottom waters were maintained throughout sedimentation. In addition, organic matter in the sediments and δ13Corg values suggest the presence of benthic microbial mats. Silver is concentrated mostly in nm to μm-sized particles in the fossilifereous calcareous mudstone, suggesting elevated levels in the depositional environment. Organic films and the evidence for hyoliths feeding on them suggest an in situ preservation of the biota, perhaps from sudden and short anoxic events and quick burial under either microbial mats or the muddy sediment. This is also supported by the presence of only very rare trace fossils.

Through the political reading, this research tries to show that, far beyond a novel about a degenerated future by overpopulation, this book presents, in its formal contradictions, much from the social, political and economic global movement of which it is part.

Fiction autobiographique et biographies imaginaires dans l'oeuvre d'Anthony Burgess / Autobiographical Fiction and Fictional Biographies in the Work of Anthony Burgess

Haffen, Aude 26 November 2010 (has links)
In his autobiography, where his fictionalizing his « real life » borders on the unbelievable, as well as in his fictional biographies, where authorial personae freely create the figures of their biographees, Anthony Burgess juggles his way between authorial truth commitments and blatant invention. The epistemological void revealed by postmodernist metabiographies is not thoroughly absent, but Burgess’s erudite « biofictions » eschew such melancholy brooding on the impossibility to resurrect the biographee, and, instead, celebrate virtual possibilities of existence, myths, fantasies and simulacra – and, doing so, deflate the naïve seriousness of academic or popular versions of the genre. At the core of Burgess’s literary experiments in the [auto]biographical mode lies a contradictory tension between his desire to fully convey the bodily, individual, de-mythified reality of these lives, and the novelist’s mytho-poetical tendency to filter them through the lens of his Catholic and Manichean worldview. Are his Marlowe, Shakespeare, Mozart, Napoleon and Keats but spectral fictional figures, whose historic real selves have been cannibalized by the idiosyncrasy of the novelist-biographer ? Burgess’s « biofictions » are a confluence of several artistic selves, but also of several ways to comprehend the relationship between life and writing [critical essay, biographical chronotope, modernist flow of consciousness, intertextual quotation], thus reasserting the organic connection between life, creation, and the work of art. His romantic-humanist quest for the singular existential selves of his artist predecessors challenges, from within the text, modern thanatographic textuality.
