Naudé, Catharina Johanna January 2006 (has links)
This article reports on the results of the identification of potential business opportunities for Non Governmental Organizations as an extra income to face the present funding challenge. Few research studies have been done on business opportunities as sources of income for NGO's. The aim of this study was to explore potential business opportunities as sources of income and it focused on the research of different possibilities. In this exploratory research study a qualitative approach was followed through interviews with business people and a focusgoup discussion to investigate potential business opportunities. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling techniques, eleven business men and a focusgroup consisting of five business men and six personnel of The Dutch Reformed Ministry or Caring. The eleven business men were recruited from the congregations of the Highveld Sinod. Data were collected through interviews with the business men and the focusgroup interview. Data were analysed according to themes. The following eight potential business opportunities were identified: government contracts, donations, improved marketing, fundraising strategies, buying of a business or shareholding in a business, partnerships, selling of therapeutic services and additional information and proposals. This offers business opportunities for NGO's to use as sources of income to sustain them and ensure that they can continue with their service delivery. The recommendation from the focus group was for more donations, an improved marketing strategy, the requirement or government contracts and selling of therapeutic services as potential opportunities. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

The determinants of success for entrepreneurs in the Western Cape : the WECBOF case

Fagan, Perry John 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Entrepreneurship is important to the growth of economies across the world. The businesses surveyed in this report are affiliated to the Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum and were winners and finalists in the Businessperson of the Year Competition. The Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum (WECBOF) was created to facilitate business opportunities and exposure for black and coloured people in the Western Cape. The Cape Flats have played an important role in the economy of the Western Cape in part as a result of an abnormal internal migration over the last 50 years. This population movement was the result of coloured people being affected by specific policies passed by the government of the time, in particular the Group Areas Act (Republic of south Africa, 1950). Through an analysis of empirical data this research project endeavours to facilitate a better understanding of the way in which entrepreneurs operating in small and medium business enterprises affiliated to the Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum (WECBOF) achieved success or ended in failure. This analysis hopes to contribute to the body of knowledge relating to entrepreneurship development in South Africa and in particular within the Western Cape. This research project adopts a statistical analysis approach by means of a questionnaire to examine the issues that relate to the success factors of entrepreneurs affiliated to the Western Cape Business Opportunities Forum. The results are presented in tabular format.

The present study aims to analyze and point out the Hybrid TV as a business opportunity for regional broadcasters in Brazil. The advent of Digital TV and SmartTVs, among others, which allow the access of broadband content (using a signal enabled by IP - internet protocol), together with the traditional broadcast transmission (signal enabled by air) present a trend of technological and behavioral convergence that unites the broadcast and the broadband, which can be called "Hybrid TV". This said Hybrid TV arises not only as a possible natural convergence of the culture in today's society, but also as an opportunity for a new way of making and watching television. This study, using a methodology that combines exploratory research and the opportunity recognition model, has identified hybrid TV as a business opportunity for regional open television broadcasters in Brazil, and found in the use of the second screen business opportunities for Audience measurement, strategic advertising, extra content, distance learning (EaD) and edutainment, but also to enhance audience relationship and loyalty.

Johansson, Hampus, Löfberg Elg, Jonathan, Axelsson, Jesper January 2022 (has links)

Developing decision support systems for last mile transportation problems

Paidi, Vijay January 2019 (has links)
Last mile transportation is the most problematic phase of transportation needing additional research and effort. Longer waits or search times, lack of navigational directions and real-time information are some of the common problems associated with last mile transportation. Inefficient last mile transportation has an impact on the environment, fuel consumption, user satisfaction and business opportunities. Last mile problems exist in several transportation domains, such as: the landing of airplanes, docking of ships, parking of vehicles, attended home deliveries, etc. While there are dedicated inter-connected decision support systems available for ships and aircraft, similar systems are not widely utilized in parking or attended handover domains. Therefore, the scope of this thesis covers last mile transportation problems in parking and attended handover domains. One problem area for parking and attended handovers is due to lack of real-time information to the driver or consumer. The second problem area is dynamic scheduling where the handover vehicle must traverse additional distance to multiple handover locations due to lack of optimized routes. Similarly, during parking, lack of navigational directions to an empty parking space can lead to increased fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Therefore, aim of this thesis is to design and develop decision support systems for last mile transportation problems by holistically addressing real time customer communication and dynamic scheduling problem areas. The problem areas discussed in this thesis consists of persistent issues even though they were widely discussed in the literature. In order to investigate the problem areas, microdata analysis approach was implemented in the thesis. The phases involved in Microdata analysis are: data collection, data processing, data storage, data analysis and decision-making. Other similar research domains, such as: computer science or statistics also involve phases such as data collection, processing, storage and analysis. These research domains also work in the fields of decision support systems or knowledge creation. However, knowledge creation or decision support systems is not a mandatory phase in these research domains, unlike Microdata analysis. Three papers are presented in this thesis, with two papers focusing on parking domains, while the third paper focuses on attended handover domains. The first paper identifies available smart parking tools, applications and discusses their uses and drawbacks in relation to open parking lots. The usage of cameras in identifying parking occupancy was recognized as one of the suitable tools in this paper. The second paper uses a thermal camera to collect the parking lot data, while deep learning methodologies were used to identify parking occupancy detection. Multiple deep learning networks were evaluated for identifying parking spaces and one method was considered suitable for acquiring real time parking occupancy. The acquired parking occupancy information can be communicated to the user to address real-time customer communication problems. However, the decision support system (DSS) to communicate parking occupancy information still needs to be developed. The third paper focuses on the attended handovers domain where a decision support system was reported which addresses real-time customer communication and dynamic scheduling problems holistically. Based on a survey, customers accepted the use of mobile devices for enabling a real-time information flow for improving customer satisfaction. A pilot test on vehicle routing was performed where the decision support system reduced the vehicle routing distance compared to the route taken by the driver. The three papers work in developing decision support systems for addressing major last mile transportation problems in parking and attended handover domains, thus improving customer satisfaction, and business opportunities, and reducing fuel costs, and pollution.

The Adoption of Distributed Ledger Technology within Central Securities Depositories : An Exploratory Study from a Business Perspective / Införandet av Distribuerad Databasteknik inom Centrala Värdepappersförvarare

Dang, Robin January 2022 (has links)
Organizations in the financial services industry are coming under increasing pressure. Regulatory compliance, operational inefficiencies, and the higher cost of capital are all forcing incumbents to adapt. As such, there are strong incentives for technological innovations that either reduce costs or generate new revenue. Distributed ledger technology (DLT), the foundation of bitcoin, is one of the latest innovations that appear to be the source of an imminent solution. An identified area with great potential for DLT is the post-trade market where market players, such as central securities depositories (CSDs), are heavily investing in pilot studies of how DLT may affect their business activities. In fact, the practical potential of adoption has been demonstrated by experiments and proof of concepts. However, while technological and regulatory aspects have been more frequently discussed in academia, the business dimension of the adoption of DLT within CSDs has received less attention. In this thesis, the business opportunities and challenges of the adoption of DLT within CSDs were explored, coupled with an analysis of the contextual factors affecting the rate of adoption. Further, this thesis compares the throughput performance between a centralized system and a private permissioned network. By performing a multiple-case study with a mixed-methodology approach, the researcher analyzed the literature, conducted a performance evaluation, and interviewed several industry experts. The conclusions suggest that the main business opportunities are the incorporation of digital assets and CSDs potential role as the gatekeeper of private networks. The main identified challenges related to adoption were interoperability, standardization, collaboration, scalability, defining applicable use cases, and governance and regulatory frameworks. Further, the performance evaluation suggests that the throughput performance of the centralized system outperforms the private permissioned network by an average of 6.5 times. The findings have both practical and academic implications. In academics, this thesis lays the foundation for further studies and provides new insights into the business dimensions of the adoption of DLT within CSDs. For practitioners, this thesis provides a basis for discussion and assessment of the entailed challenges related to the adoption of DLT within the post-trade market.
