The Relationship between Campus Involvement and Civic Engagement

The purpose of this study is to investigate if campus involvement, either in high school or college, has a relationship with civic engagement after college. Current UCF students, who have at least finished their first year, will be surveyed about their high school involvement to determine if it is related to their college engagement; and, recent UCF Alumni, graduated between 2014-2018, will be surveyed to determine if there is a relationship between campus engagement and civic life after graduation. As well, the data will review other key aspects like campus location, race, gender, international status, motivations, religious affiliations, etc. The surveys were collected virtually over a few months through various social media platforms and then coded into a spreadsheet for analysis. This study is important because it will evaluate the connection between campus involvement and long-term civic engagement. With more students being invested in UCF's diverse and inclusive community, over time, their civic engagement will also increase. This will hopefully result in a better future for UCF's student leaders as they graduate and move on through their life. The results of this study indicated that there was a relationship between high school involvement and college campus involvement. However, there were no other statistically significant relationships or differences in the other research questions.

The Compatibility of Citizenship Re-conceptualization and Civic Integration Mechanisms with John Rawls’ Political Liberalism in a Scandinavian Context

The thesis revolves around the transformation of liberal citizenship to a higher degree of conditionality in the face of pluralist challenges revolving around achieving a shared common good. John Rawls’ Political Liberalism serves as the theoretical foundation for the argumentative analysis conducted, utilizing specific civic integration policies of Sweden and Denmark. The normative policy analysis reveals that the “civic integrationist turn” in itself is largely compatible with Rawls’ liberal principles of justice and equality. However, the problematic component lies in the de facto implementation of those measures which can have exclusionary and discriminatory effects i.e. the formulation of citizenship test questions and the portrayal of particular comprehensive doctrines of minority groups as incompatible with national liberal values. The most substantial challenge for a liberal pluralist society remains achieving “overlapping consensus” in the political sphere and guaranteeing safeguards for citizen’s personal comprehensive doctrines in the private sphere.

Today's media society allows young people to come into contact with news through their everyday use of social media. News is interspersed between the friends' photos on the Instagram platform. But can everything be trusted? How do young people know what is true news and what is fake? The phenomenon of fake news refers to disinformation that is published with the aim of imitating true news articles. Thus the purpose of the study is to investigate how the use of social media has affected young Swedes' civic reasoning of news and what the consequences of fake news on Instagram may be. To investigate this, the demonstrations in Iran that started in September 2022, and which were ongoing during the study, were used as a starting point to understand how young people examine Instagram posts.The study has been carried out by compiling qualitative data, mainly from surveys, but also with quantitative data from five semi-structured interviews. The results provided an overall picture of young people's perception of fake news and an insight into what young Swedes' civic reasoning process looks like. The conclusion shows that fake news in connection with the demonstrations in Iran did not affect all young people equally. Some felt that the knowledge of fake news negatively affected their perception of the credibility of any news from the demonstrations. While others, due to the strong emotions the event evoked, saw past the problem of fake news, which affected their civic reasoning abilities. The conclusion also shows that young Swedes have a good idea of what fake news is and the motives behind the spread of fake news on Instagram. However, they feel that the credibility of true news generally decreases, as it is easy to spread fake news on Instagram. This, in turn, can lead to young people avoiding news and news accounts on Instagram to avoid questioning and reviewing news posts they see.In conclusion, young people possess civic reasoning abilities and review posts that they consider skeptical. However, these abilities vary and it is therefore important that they develop their source-critical process, above all as this is essential to be able to navigate among information online.

Cultivating Self-Reliance: Participation in Urban Agriculture as Civil Leisure

Using ethnographic methods, the present study explored volunteer participation in an urban farm in Austin, Texas, USA. Researchers spent three years documenting the activities of participants via participant observation and interviewing. Guided by the concept of civil leisure, researchers analyzed voluntary participation in the farm as a form of leisure practice that was oriented towards civic issues. Analysis indicated that participation was understood as a means of (1) fostering self-reliance through peer education, (2) establishing and strengthening place-based social networks, and (3) addressing civic concerns related to infrastructure and food security. These findings are interpreted within the context of Bauman's concepts of liquid modernity (2000. Liquid Modernity. Malden, MA: Polity Press) and liquid fear (2006. Liquid Fear. Malden, MA: Polity Press). On the basis of the findings and interpretations, recommendations are made to suggest ways in which municipalities might cultivate residents’ civic impulses, especially as relates to urban agriculture.

Collecting Characters

Coherence is not unity alone, but rather expressing the same cause. How can I form a common expression between a diverse selection of fragments? I have treated the characters as fragments - something that is ripped out of its context and doesn’t belong to a system. They are individuals. The act of collecting characters relates to what the swedish author Torgny Lindgren says about his figures of projection. They are people and places he have encountered in real life, that made a strong impression on him. They have followed him through the years, reoccurring in his authorship in slightly different shapes. This is perhaps what I have been looking for, my own figures of projection within the field of architecture. Along the work with the characters, I have been reading A scientific autobiography by Aldo Rossi. Searching for my own figures of projection, Rossis description of his architectural practice has been to useful help. There is a clear connection between his sources of inspiration and his works, not only in physical resemblance, but also in strong ideas connecting different fragments with each other. The architectural method of this semester could be described as that of still life painting, were seemingly disparate fragments have been carefully joined together. The ambition was to make this diverse selection of characters come together in one building, forming a common voice. / Samstämighet handlar om mer än enighet, det är att uttrycka en gemensam sak. Hur kan en rad, till synes olika fragment, forma ett gemensamt uttryck? Jag har behandlat mina karaktärer som fragment - något som är ryckt ur sitt sammanhang och inte tillhör ett system. De är individer. Samlandet av karaktärer anknyter till vad Torgny Lindgren berättar om sina projektionsgestalter. Det är människor och platser som han har mött i verkliga livet,som har gjort så starkt intryck på honom att de har rotat sig i hans författarskap. Där återkommer de, i olika skepnader och olika berättelser.I mitt examensarbete har jag letat efter mina egna projektionsgestalter, i arkitekturen. Samtidigt som arbetet med karaktärerna har framskridit, har jag läst A Scientific Autobiography av Aldo Rossi.I sökandet efter mina egna projektionsgestalter, har Rossis beskrivning av hans praktik varit användbar. Det finns ett tydligt samband mellan de inspirationskällor han nämner, och hans egna verk. Inte bara i fysisk tappning, utan även i tydliga idéer, som kopplar samman fragment med varandra. Den arkitektoniska metoden denna termin kan enklast liknas vid stilleben-målning, där till synes helt olika fragment omsorgsfullt fogas samman till en väl avvägd helhet. Ambitionen var att låta karaktärerna samsas i en byggnad och förena sig i samma språk.

The Effect Of Civics-based Video Games On Middle School Students' Civic Engagement

Democratic theorists argue that democratic institutions thrive when the citizens of the society robustly participate in governance (Galston, 2004; Barber, 2001). A traditional indicator of democratic participation is voting in elections or referendums. However, democratic apologetics posit that humans need to be trained in democratic processes in order to be democratic citizens (Dewey, 1916; Gutmann, 1990; Sehr, 1997; Goodlad, 2001). Citizens need to know not only the protocol of participation, they also need to be trained in the processes of mind (Dewey, 1916; 1927). Educational systems in this country have been the traditional place where democratic training has been vested (Spring, 2001). It seems, though, that the methods that educators are using to train young people fail to meet this challenge as voting rates among the youngest citizens (under 30) have never been higher than slightly more than half of eligible voters in the age group. To remedy this situation, Congress and several private civic-education organizations have called for changing curricular approaches to engage more youth. One such method that may hold promise is the use of video game technology. The current generation of youth has grown up in a digital world where they have been labeled "Digital Natives" (Prensky, 2001a). They are "tech savvy" and comfortable with their lives being integrated with various forms of digital technology. Significantly, industry research suggests that over 90% of "Digital Natives" have played a video game in the last 30 days, and business is booming to the level that video games pulled in more money than the movie industry did in 2008 (ESA, 2009). As early as the 1970s, educational researchers have looked at the use of video game technology to engage student learning; however, this research has been limited at best. More recently, educational scholars such as James Gee (2003; 2007) and Kurt Squire (2002; iii 2003; 2006) have sought to make the academic conversation more mature with regard to using video games as a classroom supplement. This study continues that conversation by using quantitative methods to investigate whether or not different groups of middle school students self-report a greater propensity to be civically engaged as a result of civic-themed video gameplay. The investigator collected data from middle school students who were given access to civic-themed video games to see if there were statistically significant differences in self-reported civic-engagement scores as a result of gameplay. This investigation was conducted at a large, urban middle school in the Southeast region of the United States.
