And There Were Jazz Clubs...: Navigating Community Change with Consumption Lifelines

DuFault, Beth Leavenworth January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation combines an assemblage theory ontology of urban sociology with the concept of Bauman's 'liquid modernity' (2000, 2012). It subsequently incorporates the nascent "liquid" constructs of liquid retail, liquid legitimacy, and liquid community to analyze consumers, community, and retailscapes in a violent and impoverished inner city area that has experienced constant and dramatic change. Through this lens, ethnographic fieldwork reveals a construct called consumption lifelines, which explains how consumers and communities use market-facing resources to find and create relative stability in the midst of turbulence, whether they choose to enter, stay in or leave a highly territorialized community with contested boundaries. The study adds complexity to Bauman's concept of liquidity and the construct of urban assemblages, and it has implications for other inner city communities that are similarly affected by changing times and challenging circumstances.

Liquid identity in music composition

Spyrou, Alexandros 01 August 2019 (has links)
The question of identity in music composition is interrelated with the condition of musical material and form and the qualities which make musical ideas traceable. The mechanisms for creating musical identity during much of the modern period were based on the elements of pitch, rhythm, harmony and form. Until the twentieth century musical identities were regulated according to traditional systems. The advent of modernism in music was marked by the new solid identities, timbre and texture to the foreground as significant identity-bearing musical elements, and at the same time saw blurring of the traditional concepts of identity. The avant-garde movements of the post-World-War-II period in particular challenged the established identity concepts by liquefying the very essence of the musical work. The modern conceptual tools need to be replaced with new ones in order to address the current state of precariousness of musical material and form. In my original composition for sinfonietta entitled rh, I propose liquid identity as a new concept of musical identity. Liquid identity is based on a new image of musical sound which embodies the internal difference of sound in a self-existing conceptual model. In a state of liquidity all hierarchies flatten and the concept of development is rendered obsolete. The composer then writes constantly “in the middle” and compositional decisions are taken here and now. Consequently, the process of composition becomes a creative anarchic praxis without an end goal.

Liquid Modernity and the Fall of Public Sphere

Chao, Man-Tzu 02 September 2005 (has links)
This thesis concerns about the hidden problems of public sphere in contemporary society. Through social thinker, Zygmunt Bauman¡¦s liquid modernity theory, we can make sense for this topics, and uses Zygmunt Bauman¡¦s liquid modernity theory as the basis for analyzing. My basic proposition is that the public sphere is now in the predicament as the transition of modernity, and faces new challenges. Briefly speaking, the act of translating private troubles into public issues is in danger of falling into disuse and being forgotten. I primarily sum up three major causes to this situation: the forces of individualization, globalization, and consumption behavior of capitalism. I hope this research can help we think about public sphere issues and strengthen the awareness of the obligations of citizens and importance of their participating.

Cultivating Self-Reliance: Participation in Urban Agriculture as Civil Leisure

Dunlap, Rudy, Harmon, Justin, Camp, Bradley H. 07 August 2020 (has links)
Using ethnographic methods, the present study explored volunteer participation in an urban farm in Austin, Texas, USA. Researchers spent three years documenting the activities of participants via participant observation and interviewing. Guided by the concept of civil leisure, researchers analyzed voluntary participation in the farm as a form of leisure practice that was oriented towards civic issues. Analysis indicated that participation was understood as a means of (1) fostering self-reliance through peer education, (2) establishing and strengthening place-based social networks, and (3) addressing civic concerns related to infrastructure and food security. These findings are interpreted within the context of Bauman's concepts of liquid modernity (2000. Liquid Modernity. Malden, MA: Polity Press) and liquid fear (2006. Liquid Fear. Malden, MA: Polity Press). On the basis of the findings and interpretations, recommendations are made to suggest ways in which municipalities might cultivate residents’ civic impulses, especially as relates to urban agriculture.

Direito do trabalho na modernidade líquida sob a perspectiva dos Direitos Humanos / Labor law in liquid modernity from the perspective of human right

Bersani, Humberto 26 October 2012 (has links)
This work is related to the Labor Law study in the context of called liquid modernity. This concept was proposed by the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, from the perspective of Human Rights. Thus, the purpose of this work is to investigate the influence of liquid modernity on Labor Law as a whole, from labor relations to the Judicial Power approaches. The study also includes the problem of rights full effectiveness guaranteed to workers by Brazilian law as a result of this context. Regarding the perspective of Human Rights, the starting point is solidarity as the basis of such axiological harvest rights, since the principle has influenced the emergence of social rights and labor law as part of the genre, this perspective will be of great value. Moreover, the issue of human rights will also be focused on the sociological theory of Bauman, investigating its point of view at this kind of rights with subsequent review of the position adopted. Finally, we analyze the consequences of liquid modernity embodied in Labor Law, in the jurisprudence scope and facing the conciliatory politic, so giving rise to the finding of a deregulation of worker protection with their own State agreement.

This study investigates the construction of contemporary childhood in view of the centrality ascribed by consumption in the organization of social life. Therefore, the narratives of a group of children in the early years of a public school in the city of Rio Grande/RS, Brazil, are analyzed. The understanding of childhood as constructions, which are linked to culturally established systems of meaning and to the forms of sociability engendered within a historical context, enabled to establish connections with the sociological studies of Zygmunt Bauman (1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008), focused on the transition from solid to liquid modernity and the advent of consumer society. The conceptual tools provided by Bauman also enabled a reflection on the challenges faced by environmental education nowadays. Bauman’s propositions are related to the studies of Reigota (2002), Wortmann (2001, 2004) and Sampaio (2005), which examine the environmental education as a nuanced and contested field, within which multiple practices and theories are defined in the search of meanings about nature and life in society. This understanding allowed considering the symbolic functions and identification meanings built by children in their interactions with goods. Thus, this study assumes that the children’s speech itself is not evidence, since it is connected to narrative links operating in the identity constitution of subjects. Such an understanding is based on the methodological approach guiding the narrative research, according to the assumptions of Connelly and Clandinin (1995) and Larrosa (1998, 2006, 2008). In order to enable the strategy of telling, listening and countering stories, the meetings proposed research activities that caused the children to reflect and engage in dialogue about their consumer experiences, such as the production of self-portraits, written productions, and conversations conducted from the reading of storybooks and comics. The analysis strategy was to identify sense relations between children’s productions, thus tracking historical conditions, sociocultural codes, mechanisms and practices that enabled its composition. This analytical deepening showed that contemporary forms of consumption provide material and symbolic references widely shared by children, thus enabling the relationship between interests and activities of individuals with different cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic conditions. Therefore, three focuses of analysis were built: children’s makings to want, buy and desire; the interpellations of media and the production of children’s bodies; and the repercussions of consumption in everyday school life. The propositions linking analyzes highlight the correlation between consumption practices and the reinvention of childhood, since the modes of being of consumer children call into question the senses of dependence, innocence, awkwardness and obedience, which still guide ways to treat and educate children in this beginning of century.

O DIREITO SÓLIDO NA MODERNIDADE LÍQUIDA: a crise de efetividade do direito criminal na contemporaneidade / THE SOLID RIGHT IN LIQUID MODERNITY: the crisis of effectiveness of criminal law in contemporary times

In this context, the Law and especially Criminal Law, do not pass unharmed. Thus, the present work starts from the understanding of the phenomena characteristic of liquid modernity, such as the divorce between power and politics, the struggle between the individual and the citizen, as well as the change of ethics in postmodernity, in order to understand what function has actually been occupied by Criminal Law in society and that has led to a state of crisis of effectiveness. Therefore it will be examined the current crisis context of Criminal Law as a whole, including not only Criminal Law and its epistemology, but Criminal Policy itself and Criminology, which is represented by the phenomenon called Criminal Law expansionism and which would have culminated in the discursive legitimization of different criminal treatment of certain individuals, the Criminal Law of the Enemy outlined by Günther Jakobs. It is only from the understanding of the problem from different points of view that a sketch of an effective criminal science can be drawn and that captures in its rationality the different nuances of the social phenomenon that it seeks to regulate, exercising a function of Solid Law that can serve as safe harbor and shield for the citizen facing the difficult context of uncertainties of liquid modernity.
