Venter, Hester Elzebet January 2009 (has links)
The novel Agaat by Marlene van Niekerk is a highly complex text. One of the most compelling aspects of the novel is the way in which the author constructs an underlying metaphorical grid which determines the composition of the novel. The motives in the novel cannot be regarded merely as motives because specific prominent and powerful metaphors are continually exploited by variation and extension. The complicated relationship between narrative and metaphor on different levels is of great importance in the interpretation of the novel. Due to the complexity of the text, the dominant metaphors cannot be analyzed in the traditional manner. In this study I want to demonstrate that conceptual blending theory, which can be regarded as a branch of conceptual metaphor theory, offers a theoretical framework that can be used to understand the underlying cognitive functioning of the interaction between author, text and reader. This dissertation will examine the processes of blending shaped from the mottos posted at the beginning of the novel. The three mottos, the music motto, the embroidery motto and the farming motto, act throughout the novel as a backdrop against which events in the novel can be interpreted. The blending formed from these mottos merge with other metaphors in the novel in order to generate meaning. The three mottos were taken from the introductions of the FAKVolksangbundel, the embroidery book Borduur so and the Hulpboek vir boere in Suid-Afrika. The three books are used by Milla to educate and teach Agaat. She uses the books to "create" Agaat and to mould her into the person that Milla wants her to be. The mottos stress the uplifting of the people and the creation of a true Afrikaner identity. Agaat accomplishes everything that the books require of her, she becomes an expert in the areas that determine the Afrikaner identity. However, as a brown woman, she is still not considered a member of community or as a fully acceptable civilized woman. The meanings of the other important metaphor in the novel, the mirror metaphor, are also investigated extensively. The mirror plays an important role in the relationship between Milla and Agaat. The mirror is also important in Milla's confrontation with herself, especially in her experience of her illness and her acceptance of her imminent death. The mirror is also used in the depiction of the relationship between characters and the experience of each other as the "Other". The blending of the mirror metaphor and the link that can be established with the theories of Lacan are part of one of the main blendings formed from the mirror metaphor. This metaphor also interacts with the embroidery metaphor. The mirror reflects images to the characters and via the characters to the readers which enforce moral judgments about perceptions and practices. The final part of the dissertation analyses how the dominant metaphors, namely music, embroidery, farming and the mirror, blend in multiple ways in the text to create new domains of meaning. The four main metaphors also blend with secondary metaphors in the novel in order to generate meaning. One of the important secondary metaphors is the "waterhondjies". The "waterhondjies" blend with Guido Gezelle's poem "Het Schrijverke". There is also emphasis on the relationship between writing and the "waterhondjies". The blending of the caeser butterfly plays an important role in the novel as well. In the final chapter the statement is made that the metaphors and symbols in Agaat cannot merely be regarded and interpreted as traditional motives, but rather as examples of cognitive blending. The types of blending in the novel require the cooperation of the reader in all cases. The reader must, in some cases, as with the mirror metaphor and the metaphor of the "waterhondjies", identify and activate the second domain of the blend. In the case of the mottos the different domains of the blend are activated by the author and the reader only needs to provide an interpretation. At the end of the dissertation the conclusion is made that the blending theory offers a suitable method and terminology to analyze the complex processes of generating meaning in the novel. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010

Možnosti kognitivnělingvistického pojetí metafory v literární výchově na 2. stupni ZŠ / Possibilities of Cognitive Lingvistic Concept Metaphor

Růžičková, Šárka January 2015 (has links)
Résumé This diploma thesis under the title Posibilities of Cognitive Lingvistic Concept Methaphor has two goals. The first is describe teachers attitudes towards methaphor in literary education. The second is show a posibilities of new concept of methaphor. There are two parts of thesis: theoretical and practical. The first part defines methapor as linguistic, literary and cognitive phenomenon. I also deal with a way how cognitive lingvistic concept of methaphor improves a process of education and how it interconnects the lessons of literature and Czech language. The second part of thesis is based on a research of results. I describe a general approaches of teachers toward methaphor during an interpretation of poetic text. I compared these approaches with an inovative education model. Finally I made a few suggestions of new approach to educational process in literary education

Člověk v hádankách. Příspěvek k českému jazykovému obrazu světa / The Human Being in Riddles. Contribution to the linguistic Picture of the World in Czech

Boháčková, Linda January 2013 (has links)
Riddles can refer to all spheres of human being. The thesis is based on contemporary theories and methods of cognitive linguistics and etnolinguistics: riddles can be seen as a specific semiotic system, which contains references to the certain way of understanding the world. The aim of this thesis is to define the linguistic picture of human being and human body in Czech folk riddles. The article of etnolinguist H. Kazancewa provides the methodical basis. Riddles can be classified: riddles about human ontogenesis are in the first group, rhyming riddles describing human body and its parts using neologisms are in the second group, riddles about organs and parts of the body are in the third group. Part of human body can be encoded on the basis of its appearance, or on the basis of its function, or both. Sets of organs in the second and in the third group differ. Head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, hands (and arms) and legs appear in both groups - they have the central position in the linguistic picture of the human body in Czech. The second group of riddles encodes forhead, stomach, knees, feet and heels in addition. The third group of riddles encodes teeth, tongue, beard, fingers and ears in addition. Some parts of human body - back, buttocks, genitals - appear exceptionally or are missing. Riddles about...

Variação e mudança no uso dos pronomes reflexivos no português popular da capital: uma abordagem funcionalista e cognitivista / Variation and change in the use of reflexive pronouns in Popular Portuguese spoken in the city of São Paulo: A functionalist and cognitivist approach.

Pereira, Deize Crespim 01 October 2007 (has links)
This research presents an analysis of reflexive pronouns in Popular Portuguese spoken in the city of São Paulo. Our main hypothesis is that these pronouns, which show variable use in Popular Portuguese, are in a process of change towards its extinction. Our goal is to observe the ways in which this probable change takes place, and identify the linguistic, cognitive, and social factors that favor or disfavor its development, using the theoretic and methodological tools of Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistics, Functional Linguistics, and Cognitive Linguistics.

Organized in ten chapters, the study begins with a brief introduction where a revision of the Jungian and the psychoanalytic literatures that make reference to concepts from Cognitive Linguistics is made, followed by a chapter that contains a concise historical introduction to Cognitive Linguistics where some of the assumptions of this field of research are exposed and compared to other theoretical approaches to linguistics. The third chapter introduces the concepts of Embodied Realism, embodied mind and Cognitive Unconscious, which support Cognitive Semantics ontology and epistemology and, in the fourth chapter, the Image Schemas Theory is exposed with an emphasis on its Kantian inspiration. The fifth chapter succinctly presents the Conceptual Metaphor Theory, including its integrated primary metaphor version, and some introductory aspects of the Conceptual Metonymy Theory. The following chapter introduces the Mental Spaces and the Conceptual Blending Theory. In the seventh chapter, a comparison between the Cognitive Semantics ontology and epistemology and its Jungian counterparts is made. In the eigth chapter, the equiparation made by Jean Knox (2005) between the Jungian concept of archetype and the Cognitive Linguistics concept of image schemas is analyzed. In the ninth chapter, the following Jungian concepts sign, allegory, symbol, thought, reason and phantasy are analyzed based on the theories presented in the previous chapters. Some of the conclusions of this analysis, presented in the last chapter of this thesis, are: (1) the opposition between consciousness and unconscious advocated by Jung in most of his works is not so radical: there is always an unconscious and subliminal dimension in all concepts; (2) the division between directed thinking and undirected thinking as stipulated by Jung in 1911, when his Psychology of the Unconscious was published, cannot be sustained in the face of the researches and formulations of Cognitive Linguistics; (3) Cognitive Linguistics can offer to Jungian Psychology a theoretical basis for the formulation of an embodied theory of the symbol / Este estudo tem como objetivo fazer uma releitura de alguns dos principais conceitos da Psicologia Junguiana à luz da Linguística Cognitiva, em especial, da teoria dos esquemas imagéticos, da metáfora conceitual, da metonímia conceitual e da mesclagem conceitual e apresentar a Linguística Cognitiva como um campo de estudo que pode fornecer importantes contribuições teóricas e práticas à Psicologia Junguiana.

A polissemia da preposição alemã über: um estudo com base na Semântica Cognitiva / The polysemy of the German preposition über: a study based on Cognitive Semantics

Bernardino, Camila Costa José 18 October 2012 (has links)
The aim of the present research is to find a polysemous network for the German preposition über. This work pertains in the studies of Cognitive Semantics, more precisely in the research of polysemy. For the cognitive semantics, polysemy is when the same lexical item has different meanings which are necessarily related and form a continuum. The model used for the analysis of the semantic network is the method of Principled Polysemy that researchers Andrea Tyler and Vyvyan Evans (2003) developed for the study of prepositions in English. In this study the authors define criteria for finding the primary sense of a preposition from which the other senses are generated. By means of these criteria, the model of Tyler and Evans could be adapted to establish the polysemous network of the German preposition über. In order to determine which senses are part of the semantic network of über, a survey was made of its meanings in grammars and dictionaries of the German language. After this survey, we used the criteria proposed by Tyler and Evans to build the semantic network of über. Finally, it was constituted a corpus composed of texts from German newspapers, to attest that these meanings are really current and observe whether there are new uses of the preposition über not yet incorporated into the dictionaries.

As professionals in education, we acknowledge about the importance of a good teaching methodology for language teaching in general, and perhaps especially for the teaching-learning of English prepositions, the element of language that tends to be regarded by traditional approaches as idiosyncratic, arbitrary, of difficult semantic characterization, whose multiple meanings do not have any relationship with one another. Thus, we believe that the theoretical foundations that guide the teaching practice and the methodology used to the teaching of this element of the language can significantly influence the results achieved with a group of students. In this context, this work aimed at exploring the potential of Cognitive Linguistics (CL) to the teaching-learning process of preposition in, in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes, seeking (i) to make the semantic description of preposition in, in the light of the theoretical perspective adopted, the CL and (ii) to propose teaching-learning activities of this lexical item for adult learners from the given description. This study methodology was based on reflections that turn to two complementary areas: (i) Language and (ii) Language-Teaching. In the language domain, we made the description and analysis of the semantics of prepositions in the light of CL, theory chosen to guide this research, since it appears to be the most appropriate theoretical framework to achieve the objective of this thesis. The LC offers a different way of thinking and explaining the prepositions, seeking to show that the multiple meanings that a preposition like in has are actually interrelated and can be explained in a motivated and systematic way within the theoretical paradigm. From the CL perspective, it becomes possible to describe the polysemy of complex structures like prepositions through network structures and, accordingly, the synchronic polysemy network (BLANK, 2003; GEERAERTS, 2006), because it has freer characteristics, it is more flexible and multidimensional, proved ideal as a way of representing a complex category like in. In the language-teaching domain of this study, we elaborated proposals of activities for the teaching-learning of the semantics of the preposition in, in English as a foreign language classes for adults of an intermediate level of proficiency, taking into account the assumptions of the CL, both regarding to how the theory explains the prepositions and the essencial notions and principles that it offers for thinking language teaching, besides the description and analysis of the preposition in performed in the language domais of this work. From our knowledge of how prepositions are seen and 8 explained by the CL and the benefits that we believe that this theoretical framework can bring to the teaching of numerous phenomena in a foreign language, we realized that the learners can be given opportunities to develop strategies and mechanisms to facilitate their learning of prepositions, providing them with knowledge of the meanings of prepositions that is more logical and related, which approximates to their experiences with this lexical item of the language, besides providing more enjoyable and enriching experiences with the English language.

This research aims at investigating the metaphorical conceptualization of emotional categories and is based on cognitive linguistics. The work discusses how primary and complex conceptual metaphors (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; GRADY, 1997) and metaphorical idealized cognitive models (LAKOFF, 1987) structure emotion concepts. It also presents the ideas of emotion prototype and aspects of emotion concepts (KÖVECSES, 2000; 2002b), as well as debates the universality and cultural variation among metaphors from emotional domain (KÖVECSES, 2005). Considering these notions, a corpus study from Twitter was carried out, concerning metaphorical occurrences for SADNESS and HAPPINESS in Portuguese language from Brazil, in order to search for evidences about the conceptualization of these emotions in such language. The investigation indicated metaphorical cognitive models that can underlie the conceptualization of the analyzed categories, several metaphorical expressions that result from these models and primary and complex conceptual metaphors that structure them. In addition, the applied study showed the relation of the cognitive models identified in corpus with the emotion prototype, similarities and differences between the analyzed categories, possibilities to elaborate different aspects of emotion concepts and also the correspondence or not of the models found for Portuguese with those pointed out for English.
