Improvising Humor: An Ethnography of Comedy Theater

This dissertation is a qualitative sociological account of how adults involved in the play of improvisational comedy theatre use gender in their performance. I take play seriously as an important frame of social life where culture is actively maintained, created and put on display. My approach is a micro-interactional one analyzing moments of humor dealing with social categories via video recordings. As my case study I use performances of improvisational comedy theatre at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre in New York City, one of the world’s premier improv comedy theatres, to observe adults actively engaging in play with each other, a space where men find disproportionate institutional success. Building on the frame theory of Cecilia Ridgeway, I look at when gender stereotypes are invoked in creating spontaneous scenes of human interaction, and in so doing, to what extent performers are able to work through “straitjackets” of social conventions, focusing on the distinction between scenes making fun of sexism verse scenes that are merely sexist. I look at the ways that though people occupy a role, there is room for them to improvise within that role, adopting different strategies for comedic success. To this end, I conclude by comparing Shamus Khan’s range of masculine expressional opportunities theory, as presented in his work Privilege, with Robb Willer’s account of the masculine overcompensation thesis, arguing that the way in which male presenting improvisers are able to adopt the comedic strategies of minority groups under the guise of irony, thereby securing that the number of expressional opportunities available to them is greater than other groups, ensures the continuation of their dominance.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / A partir da leitura da peÃa RÃs, de 405 a.C., de AristÃfanes, depreende-se uma forte utilizaÃÃo de material mitolÃgico utilizado pelo comediÃgrafo na construÃÃo do texto. Dessa forma, uma leitura dessa comÃdia, a partir das modernas abordagens cientÃficas do mito, permite a determinaÃÃo de um nÃcleo mÃtico capaz de oferecer uma importante chave de leitura para a obra de AristÃfanes, bem como para a produÃÃo dramÃtica do final do perÃodo clÃssico grego. No agÃn entre Ãsquilo e EurÃpedes, sÃo os prÃprios trÃgicos, que, insultando-se, revelam como fonte de sua produÃÃo, respectivamente, a influÃncia dos mitos de Ares e Afrodite. Sendo os dois tragediÃgrafos integrantes da trÃade eleita pelos atenienses como os melhores representantes do gÃnero trÃgico, e, sendo a poesia uma das fontes constituintes da educaÃÃo do cidadÃo grego, a pesquisa verificarÃ, atà que ponto os mitos de Ares e Afrodite estÃo presentes na obra dos dois tragediÃgrafos, e como ambos os utilizam como contribuiÃÃo para o fundamento da formaÃÃo do espÃrito do homem grego. Tendo como base uma dialÃtica entre o amor e a guerra, a pesquisa irà verificar as ocorrÃncias dessas tradiÃÃes na obra do comediÃgrafo AristÃfanes, a partir da leitura da peÃa RÃs. AristÃfanes, ao escolher o reino dos mortos como espaÃo de discussÃo entre essas duas tradiÃÃes mitolÃgicas, estabelece um tribunal paradigmÃtico, apto para apreciar e valorar os diferentes elementos e tipos de discurso trÃgico, tratando-os, entretanto, sob a Ãtica cÃmica. Faz-se mister determinar atà que ponto o discurso cÃmico, a partir do paralelo entre estruturas do submundo e a contingÃncia da vida ateniense estariam sendo utilizados como uma tentativa de interpretar o mito. Por fim, verificaremos se comÃdia no ano de 405 a.C., com a apresentaÃÃo da peÃa RÃs, procurava apropriar-se do discurso mitolÃgico, modificando-o e plasmando-o de acordo com as novas exigÃncias da pÃlis, como antes fizeram os trÃgicos, e quais as implicaÃÃes desse novo discurso diante dos elementos do fazer teatral: texto, performance e audiÃncia / Based on a reading of the play The Frogs, 405 b.C., by Aristophanes, itâs inferred a strong use of mythological material used by the comediographist in the construction of the text. Therefore, a reading of that comedy under the modern scientific approaches to the myth allows the determination of a mythical nucleus able to offer an important key to reading the work of Aristophanes as well as the dramatic production of the late classical Greek period. In the agon between Aeschylus and Euripedes, the tragic themselves are the ones who, insulting each other, reveal the source of their production to be, respectively, the influence from the myths of Ares and Aphrodite. Both the tragedians being members of the triad elected by the Athenians as the best representatives of the tragic genre, and, the poetry being one of the constituent sources of the Greek citizenâs education, this research will verify to what extent the myths of Ares and Aphrodite are present in the work of the two tragedians, and how both use it as a contribution to the foundation for the shaping of the Greek manâs spirit. From a dialectic between love and war, the second part of the research will verify the occurrences of these traditions in the work of the comediographist Aristophanes, analyzing the play The Frogs. The author, when choosing the kingdom of the dead as a discussion space between these two mythological traditions, establishes a paradigmatic court, able to appreciate and value the diferent elements and types of tragic speech, treating them, however, under the comical perspective. It is necessary to determine to what extent the comic speech from the parallel between the underground structures and the contingency of Athenian life were being used as an attempt to interpret the myth. Finally, will verify with the presentation of the play Frogs, the comedy would be, in 405 b.C., seeking to appropriate the mythological speech, modifying it and shaping it according to the new requirements of the polis, as the tragic did before, and what are the implications of this new discourse on the elements related to theater: text, performance and audience

In this search for paradise in this life, as in the afterlife, the Florentine poet wrote one of the most studied and recited poems in the world, Commedia. Amid political quarrels within Florence, which Dante considered his paradise, the poet was exiled and through his writing roamed the Italian courts in search of a paradise in this life. In this work, we try to demonstrate how this process hapened, either by the political disputes in which Dante became involved, as well as in his defense to the Empire and oposition to the Papacy. The choices of the guides during their imaginary journey and the inspiration in the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna, were also of fundamental importance for the composition of the Commedia. Thus, we seek to follow the trail and paths traveled by the poet in his incessant search for a paradise, still in this life. / A sociedade cristã sempre imaginou uma recompensa paradisíaca na vida após a morte e com Dante Alighieri não foi diferente. Nesta busca pelo paraíso, tanto nesta vida, quanto na vida após a morte, o poeta florentino escreveu um dos poemas mais estudados e recitados no mundo, a Commedia. Em meio a disputas políticas dentro de Florença, que Dante considerava seu paraíso, o poeta foi exilado e por meio de sua escrita vagou pelas cortes italianas em busca de um paraíso nesta vida. Neste trabalho procuramos demonstrar como se deu este processo, seja pelas disputas políticas em que Dante se envolveu, bem como na sua defesa ao Império e oposição ao Papado. As escolhas dos guias durante sua viagem imaginária e a inspiração nos mosaicos bizantinos de Ravena, também foram de fundamental importância para a composição da Commedia. Assim, procuramos seguir as trilhas e os caminhos percorridos pelo poeta em sua busca incessante por um paraíso, ainda nesta vida.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Our thesis aims to analyze the relationship between the divine and the human, political and sexual, as well as the relationships established between these plans and the dramatic text from the comedy skit Lysistrata, written by the Greek poet Aristophanes. It is due to show how textual and discursive elements are crucial for the development of the female characters who are opposed to the male characters, either by speech or symbolic images, since the ideal hero to the public administration of the city. It dialogues to some aspects of comic irony, such as the exaggeration and pun, to demonstrate how these elements work together as a discourse, which is an important characteristic for the composition of the part and which by women take the power of the city. We try to analyze the images related to the weave- spin that exemplifies the relationship between creating / narration, in order to demonstrate the feminine imagery that makes up the work. We used, as a guide for our research, the concepts of hero, arete, identity and imagination to confirm our thinking about the social and political aspects of women in ancient Greece. Among the theoretical underpinning our research are the classic reference works such as Homer and Hesiod , the studies of Vernant (1977, 2001) , Silva (1983, 2007), BrandÃo ( 1985, 1987 ) and POMPEU (1997, 2004). / A presente dissertaÃÃo tem como objetivo analisar as relaÃÃes entre os planos divino e humano, polÃtico e sexual, como tambÃm as relaÃÃes que se estabelecem entre esses planos e o texto dramÃtico, a partir da peÃa cÃmica LisÃstrata, do poeta grego AristÃfanes. Buscaremos mostrar como os elementos textuais e discursivos sÃo preponderantes para a elaboraÃÃo das personagens femininas que se contrapÃem Ãs personagens masculinas, seja atravÃs do discurso ou das imagens simbÃlicas, desde o ideal de herÃi atà a administraÃÃo pÃblica da cidade. Abordaremos dentre alguns aspectos do cÃmico a ironia, o exagero, o trocadilho, buscando demonstrar como esses elementos colaboram como discurso, que constitui importante particularidade para a composiÃÃo da peÃa e com o qual as mulheres tomam o poder da cidade. Analisaremos as imagens relacionadas ao tecer/ fiar que exemplificam a relaÃÃo entre criar/narrar, para procurar comprovar o imaginÃrio feminino que compÃe a obra. Este estudo objetiva estabelecer uma discussão acerca das referencias metateatrais e suas implicações na Andria, a primeira comédia de Terêncio, da qual também oferecemos uma tradução integral para a nossa língua. Quanto ao tratamento terenciano da fabula palliata, longe do que se pensava sobre seu suposto afastamento das técnicas empregadas pelos melhores comediógrafos do gênero, Terêncio se mostra autoconsciente de sua posição em uma tradição literária estabilizada e aceitou o desafio de se colocar na mesma posição renomada que Névio, Plauto e Ênio. Ao fazer isso, ele buscou criar uma comédia que não só não careceria de referencias metateatrais, mas que, ao contrário, daria continuidade ao metateatro plautino. Na Andria de Terêncio o vocabulário do engano, espécie de aceno para uma cena metateatral, alerta-nos para as peças dentro da comédia presentes ou vindouras e para o conhecimento que um personagem tem sobre as convenções cômicas. Plauto amiúde nos apresenta um personagem que reconhece sua existência como figura teatral em cena, mas, quando o velho Simão exibe seu conhecimento do personagem-tipo na peça Andria, podemos ver que ele falha ao enxergar enganos onde não há, interpretando a verdade como uma ficção elaborada por seus escravos, e falha na tarefa de reconhecer que ele pertence ao acervo de personagens da tradição da palliata / This study strives for a discussion about metatheatrical references and their implication in Terence\'s first comedy Andria, of which we also aim to furnish the complete translation to Portuguese. About the Terentian treatment of the fabula palliata, far away of what was thought about his supposed departing from techniques employed by the best playwrights of the genre, Terence is self-consciously aware of his place in an established literary tradition and faced the challenge of placing himself in the same renowned position of Naevius, Plautus and Ennius. In doing so, he tried to create a comedy that was not only not devoid of metatheatrical references, but, on the contrary, fond of the Plautine metatheatre. In Terences Andria the language of deception, a kind of an eye blink to a metatheatrical scene, alerts us to ongoing or further playswithin- a-play and to character\'s knowledge of comic conventions. Plautus usually presents a character who acknowledges his existence as a theatrical figure on stage, but when the old man Simo displays the knowledge of the character type in Andria, we are able to see that he fails to see deceptions where there are none, interpreting the truth as a fiction contrived by their slaves, and he also fails to recognize that he also belongs to the same stock types of palliata tradition.

Considering the idea that there is a game between the sensory substances, from an act in concert among different expressed plans, we intend to describe, in the expressed plans and in the purport of the drama enunciation, how the music is organized and how it contributes to the construction of the scenic narrative and speech. The corpus of this research is a video recording of a scene chosen among various performances of a theater group from São Paulo, Circo Grafitti. Their work is characterized by musical comedy plays, that have not been performed yet, and they are produced based on a collaborative research, composition or adaptation of scripts and songs. The theoretical framework of the analysis of this dissertation is the French Semiotics by Greimas, because it considers the purport plan of the texts in several planes of expression as well as the syncretization in terms of expression, also it understands the script as an organization which carries the effects of meaning. / A presente dissertação aborda questões referentes à sincretização da linguagem musical à cena teatral. A partir da ideia de jogo entre as substâncias sensoriais, do contracenar entre diversos planos da expressão, visamos a descrever, nos planos da expressão e do conteúdo da enunciação teatral, de que modo a música se organiza e contribui para a construção da narrativa e do discurso cênicos. O corpus desta pesquisa constitui-se da gravação em vídeo de uma cena escolhida dentre vários espetáculos do grupo teatral paulistano Circo Grafitti. O trabalho da companhia se caracteriza por montagens que cultivam o gênero da comédia musical, sempre inéditas, em processo colaborativo no trabalho de pesquisa, composição ou adaptação de textos e canções. O quadro teórico utilizado para proceder à análise é o da Semiótica de linha francesa, greimasiana, por esta trabalhar com o plano de conteúdo dos textos em diversos planos de expressão e com a sincretização no plano da expressão, bem como por entender o texto como uma organização que produz efeitos de sentido.

In this thesis I dealt with commonly accepted theory, that Czech author Emil Arthur Longen wrote his plays in style similar to film slapstick comedy. The work starts with biography of Emil Arthur Longen. He was born in 1885 and died in 1936, his life was filled with many rises and falls because of his short temper, alcoholism and turbulent relation with his first wife, Polyxena (commonly called Xena), also an actress. Longen started as a student of Arts in Prague, but never ended his studies and left to pursue his interest, first in painting, later in another fields like filmmaking and acting, but he is most known as a playwright. He wrote more than seventy dramatic pieces and adapted another hundred more for his own theatre and also for other houses he worked with. His first efforts were cabaret shorts, he also wrote more serious things, but his most succesfull plays are farces one to four acts long. He was a principal playwright who wrote plays for the theater of Vlasta Burian, nicknamed The King of Comedians in interwar Czechoslovakia, who excelled in many of them. Critics during his lifetime but also later ones noted that his plays are inspired by American film slapstick comedy. A presente dissertação consiste em um estudo e na tradução do Eunuchus de P. Terêncio Afer. A obra é a quarta comédia de Terêncio, representada em Roma no ano de 161 a.C., durante os Ludi Megalenses. O estudo divide-se em três partes: o contexto da obra, a sua estrutura e o ethos das personagens. Em relação ao contexto, são considerados o gênero da obra, os espetáculos cênicos, as origens do teatro latino e a biografia literária do autor. Para a análise da estrutura da obra, são examinadas separadamente as duas partes que a constituem: o prólogo e o enredo. O prólogo terenciano tem como peculiaridade o seu uso para a polêmica literária. O enredo organiza-se em duas bases: a suspensão do argumento e a dupla intriga. O ethos das personagens é o alvo principal deste estudo. Foram escolhidas seis personagens para a análise: Taís, Pítias, Pânfila, Fédria, Quérea e Parmenão. Nessa análise, procurou-se operar com dois tratamentos dados ao conceito de ethos: o primeiro, dentro do pensamento aristotélico, nos desdobramentos que o termo ganha na Retórica e na Poética; o segundo, situado no âmbito da Análise do Discurso Francesa, em um desenvolvimento feito por Dominique Maingueneau, ao recuperar, por via da pragmática, a noção de ethos da retórica. / The present dissertation includes both a translation of Terence\'s play The Eunuch and a study on it. The play is Terence\'s fourth comedy and was staged in 161 BC, in Rome, during the Ludi Megalenses. The study has been divided into three parts: the context of the play, its structure and the ethos of the characters. Regarding the context, we considered the genre question, staging and stagecraft, latin theatre origins and the author\'s literary biography. The analysis of the structure has two parts, according to the division of the play itself into a prologue and the plot. Terence\'s prologues are peculiar in their aptness for literary polemics. The plot is organized on two main axes: line suspension and double intrigue. The characters\' ethe are the main target of this study. Six characters have been chosen for the analysis: Thais, Pythias, Pamphila, Phaedria, Chaerea, Parmeno. We approached the concept of ethos in two ways for this analysis: first, within aristotelian thought, and the way it unfolds in both the Rhetoric and the Poetics; second, within the French Discourse Analysis, following a development by Dominique Maingueneau, as he recovered, via his pragmatics, the rhetorical concept of ethos.

Unintentional Community

The contents of this thesis will detail the entire process I took in making the first episode of Unintentional Community. I have broken up my process into six parts. Part One will discuss the inspirations for the show as well as how it came about. Part Two will cover all of the pre-production work that my team and I went through. Part Three discusses the entire process of my shooting experience as a director and actor. Part Four details the long post-production process. Part Five talks about the show’s bible. Finally, Part Six lays out our entire plan for how we intend to shop Unintentional Community.
