A Study on the Implementation and Effects of Educational Training Among Cram Schools.-The Comparison Between Trained and Private Cram Schools

Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the different types of tutorial education and training implementation profiles and impact. And to understand tutorial teachers through the regularization of education and training, whether it can be operational concept to convey to the teachers and thereby affecting their professional growth and educational philosophy and attitude, and finally implement the business service concept. The main purposes of this research are as follows¡G 1. To understand and compare the overview of different types of tutorial education and training of the implementation. 2. The effectiveness of cram educational training, and to identify the factors of limiting different tutorial training. 3. Optimal principle and mode of tutorial education and training, to put forward a set of tutorial education and training principles and models for further reference. The information collection methods are expert interviews and questionnaires. The research interviews the manager of training for cram, and has the employees fill out a questionnaire survey. According to the interviews and survey,the main findings of this research are as follows: A¡BDifferent types of cram education and training of implementation has variations, but all of them would make plans on educational training based on different types of motivations and purpose ,training implementation patterns and training implementation plans ,such as part to plan education and train. B¡BThe staff and training manager both agree that education and training have effective outcome , it should be combined with the primary consideration: "payroll system" and "reward system". Different types of cram schools could vary the measures and methods of training programs based on their scale of organizations. Moreover, the cram school dean believes that training programs are merely utilized to help teachers upgrade their professional ability and they could not connected to any system inside the crams. C¡BThe tutorial class staff generally believes that for the most effective and favorite training way are ¡ugroup discussion¡v,and ¡uteaching demonstration and observation ¡v¡C D¡BThe rank by the staff toward training programs in terms of the satisfactions of needs assessment,implementation and effectiveness are between satisfied and very satisfied. E¡BAccording to the research on the tutorial staff, it can be found that the biggest difficulty in planning conducting training programs are ¡§raining incentives¡¨ ¡§and¡¨ teacher¡¦s lack of interest. Received Signal Strength-Based Localization of Non-Collaborative Emitters in the Presence of Correlated Shadowing

RSS-based localization is a promising solution for estimating the position of a non-collaborative emitter using a network of collaborative sensors. This paper examines RSS-based localization and differential RSS (DRSS) localization in the presence of correlated shadowing with no knowledge of the emitter's reference power.  A new non-linear least squares (NLS) DRSS location estimator that uses correlated shadowing information to improve performance is introduced. The existing maximum likelihood (ML) estimator and Cram\' er Rao lower bound (CRLB) for RSS-based localization given do not account for correlated shadowing. This paper presents a new ML estimator and CRLB for RSS-based localization that account for spatially correlated shadowing and imperfect knowledge of the emitter's reference power. The performance of the ML estimator is compared to the CRLB under different simulation conditions. The ML estimator is shown to be biased when the number of sensors is small or the shadowing variance is large. The effects of correlated shadowing on an RSS-based location estimator are thoroughly examined. It is proven that an increase in correlated shadowing will improve the accuracy of an RSS-based location estimator. It is also demonstrated that the ideal sensor geometry which minimizes the average error becomes more compact as correlation is increased. A geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) formulation is derived that provides a metric for the effect of the position of the sensors and emitter on the location estimator performance. A measurement campaign is conducted that characterizes the path loss at 3.4 GHz. The measurements are compared to the log-distance model. The errors between the model and the measurements, which should theoretically be Gaussian, have a Kurtosis value of 1.31. The errors were determined to be spatially correlated with an average correlation coefficient of 0.5 at a distance of 160 meters. The performance of the location estimators in simulation is compared to the performance using measurements from the measurement campaign. The performance is very similar, with the largest difference between the simulated and actual results in the ML estimator. In both cases, the new NLS DRSS estimator outperformed the other estimators and achieved the CRLB. / Master of Science

台灣補習教育經驗之研究 / A Study of Cram School Experience in Taiwan

一國如在教育上過度強調以學業為導向,就會出現具有雙刃劍角色的補習現象通常會,一方面幫助學生在學術能力測驗中取得高成就,另一方面限制了學生的創造性發展。部分學生因為在普通學校中無法取得足夠的知識和技能,故而轉向補習班為測驗做準備。尤其在英語科目成為主要考核科目之後,補習班的項目也因此更加多元。本研究旨在關注台灣補習教育何以在1990年代教改之後,依然擴張的現況,補習班如何從日常學習的補充角色,轉向台灣中學生教育中的必要部分。研究者針對補習班英語教學方法進行探討,透過對補習班經營者、教師和補習學生進行深度訪談,來瞭解他們的相關經驗。研究結果發現,補習班經營者意透多元與另類等途徑,聘請英語教師,來提升教學的創意。至於教師的訪談發現,英語教師通過嘗試新的教學方法來幫助學生在學業方面取得更好的成績,但是這種方式存在一定的局限性。本研究印一步發現補習班教師包括來自英語國家的和非英語國家,即使某些補習班老師並未取得教師資格證書,但在學生看來比一般學校的英語任課老師更加優秀。值得注意的是,大多數學生認為補習班的教學方法與一般學校相差無幾,但是學生滿意度明顯高於主流學校英語教師。本研究進一步確認補習班因商業利益等考量,許多訊息備受保密,使得研究者難以獲得一套完整的教學方法和學生經驗。 / In an academically oriented nation, there is a realization that attending a cram school can be double-edged, as they often offer great outcomes in students’ academic achievements especially with their test scores but they can also limit students’ creative development. Unable to obtain sufficient knowledge and skills for tests in mainstream schools, students have commonly turned to cram schools for examination preparation. Educational reforms enforcing English as a main examination subject greatly diversified the possibilities for tutoring and in fact helped cram schools’ diversification. The study focuses on the phenomenon of the influx of cram schools, and how it’s no longer a supplement, but instead a necessity of a secondary student’s education in Taiwan. This study starts with investigating the cram school phenomenon, as well as to discuss the teaching methods used in English classes. Finally, data has been collected through in-depth interviews among cram school owners, teachers and former attendees to look at their experience in cram school . The results of the study shows that the cram school owners approved the necessity to enhance creative teaching through alternative methods so as hiring teachers with supplementary talents. The teacher interviews revealed that trying new approaches to teaching have helped students achieve better outcomes academically, but sometimes only to a certain extent that is why cram schools can be double-edged. The paradox of this study is the cram school teachers’ qualifications for both native and English speakers. In fact, even though they may not have any teaching qualifications, cram school teachers are described by students as being better teachers compared to the ones in regular school. Significantly, the study discovered that a majority of students find cram school teaching methods in general so as the overall experience to be more satisfactory than with mainstream school The study finally showed that gaining information about cram schooling can be difficult as there is some secrecy surrounding it. This prevented the researcher from gaining a complete picture of cram school teaching methods and students’ experience.

Synthèse stéréosélective de motifs polypropionates via la chimie des radicaux : application à l'élaboration de l'hémisphère ouest de la narasine

Cet ouvrage traite principalement de la synthèse de motifs polypropionates de type stéréopentade ainsi qu’une application à la synthèse d’une molécule naturelle possèdant des propriétés biologiques. La stratégie envisagée pour l’élaboration de ces motifs récurrents dans plusieurs structures d’origine naturelle fait appel à la chimie des radicaux. Cette thèse se divise en différents chapitres dans lesquels la versatilité de la méthodologie développée sera démontrée. En premier lieu, il sera question de présenter l’importance de la synthèse de motifs polypropionates. Le domaine couvert par la chimie de ces molécules complexes hautement fonctionnalisées a contribué énormément à l’avancement de nos connaissances en synthèse organique, particulièrement dans le contexte des réactions impliquant des molécules acyliques. Une brève description des méthodes connues est présentée afin de saisir l’étendue des défis restants pour construire efficacement tous les isomères possibles des polypropionates de type stéréopentade. La stratégie proposée est basée sur une approche contrôlée entièrement par le substrat. Ce contrôle s’appuie sur le choix judicieux de l’acide de Lewis activant les deux réactions impliquées, soit la réaction de Mukaiyama et le transfert d’hydrogène. La seconde section de cette thèse concerne principalement le développement d’une réaction de Mukaiyama impliquant un éther d’énol silylé portant un lien pouvant être homolytiquement brisé dans la réaction suivante et un aldéhyde de type propionate. Le contrôle de l’aldolisation provient de la nature de l’acide de Lewis. Une espèce monodentate (BF3·OEt2) génère une relation 3,4-syn selon le modèle dit Felkin-Anh tandis que les acides de Lewis bidentates mènent à la relation 3,4-anti via un état de transition définit comme Cram-chélate. Une optimisation des conditions réactionnelles en variant l’acidité et la stoechiométrie de l’acide de Lewis de titane a permis de construire diastéréosélectivement le produit de Mukaiyama ayant une relation 3,4-anti. En outre, la nature des complexes impliqués dans ces réactions a été élucidée par des études RMN 13C à basse température. Une fois les précurseurs radicalaires synthétisés, notre méthodologie de réduction par transfert d’hydrogène contrôlée également par les acides de Lewis s’avère très efficace. Les acides de Lewis dérivés d’aluminium mènent sélectivement à la relation 2,3-syn selon un contrôle endocyclique tandis que les acides de Lewis de bore permettent la création des relations 2,3-anti en se basant sur une stabilisation par les divers facteurs de contrôle de molécules acycliques. Cette stratégie novatrice nous a ainsi permis de construire efficacement les 16 diastéréoisomères possibles. Le chapitre suivant concerne l’application de cette méthodologie à la synthèse de l’hémisphère ouest de la salinomycine et de la narasine. Plusieurs défis synthétiques ont été relevés à cette occasion par la présence de nombreux centres stéréogènes contigus. Nous avons réalisé que la relation stéréochimique 2,3-anti de la salinomycine n’est pas accessible sélectivement par la chimie des radicaux via l’effet exocyclique. Des études ont été entreprises afin de comprendre cette perte de sélectivité. Les conclusions suggèrent que les substituants sur le cycle imposent un biais conformationnel conduisant à des faibles sélectivités. Une alternative utilisant un réactif de crotylsilane chiral a été développée pour arriver à la molécule cible. Cette situation est différente dans le cas de la narasine où la présence du méthyle sur le carbone en position β du radical bloque efficacement l’approche d’une des faces d’attaque par l’hydrure. Des sélectivités impressionnantes nous ont permis de construire le fragment C1-C9 de la narasine de manière expéditive et efficace. Finalement, l’élongation sélective utilisant à nouveau la séquence d’aldolisation de Mukaiyama/réduction radicalaire suivie d’un couplage de type aldol stéréosélectif conduit au fragment C1-C17 de la narasine (hémisphère ouest)en 19 étapes avec un rendement global de l’ordre de 7 %. En dernier lieu, nous nous sommes penchés sur la réactivité des α-bromo-β- alkoxycétones lors de transfert d’hydrogène. Nous avons découvert que la chimie de ces derniers pourrait s’avérer utile dans le contexte de la synthèse de motifs complexes polypropionates. La présence d’un centre stéréogène de l’autre coté de la cétone semble avoir un impact sur la sélectivité. / This thesis focuses on a new methodology for the synthesis of polypropionate stereopentads with an application to the synthesis of a natural molecule that possess interesting biological properties. The key steps of our strategy to elaborate those motifs will use radical chemistry previously developped in our group. First, the importance of synthesizing polypropionate motifs is presented. In recent years, polypropionate systems have stimulated extensive interest due to their association with a broad spectrum of biologically active targets with proven or potential use in medicine, including those with antibiotic and anticancer properties. Many of the approaches reported used chiral reagents and took advantage of double asymmetric induction. Not surprisingly, mismatched scenarios were at times noticed and yet, no single strategy has been reported leading directly to all 16 stereopentad diastereoisomers. Thus, the rapid and facile assembly of the polypropionate framework would be very beneficial and is still an active area of research. The second section of this work describes our contribution to this area with the development of a fully substrate-controlled sequence of Mukaiyama aldol reaction followed by a hydrogen transfer reaction on aldehydes having the stereotriad array. The aldol reaction can be performed under Felkin-Anh or Cram-chelate pathway to give either the 3,4-syn or 3,4-anti relationship, respectively. This reaction was optimized using different Lewis acids to give excellent yield and diastereoselectivity. We found that an excess of TiCl3(OiPr) in our Mukaiyama reactions increased the chelating ability of the Lewis acid, thus leading to improved diastereoselectivity. Low temperature 13C NMR was performed to obtain more information on the complexes present in solution. Once the radical precursors were obtained, the hydrogen transfer step was performed. Aluminum-containing Lewis acids led to the exclusive formation of the 2,3- syn isomer under the endocyclic effect while controlling factors described for acyclic molecules were sufficient enough to give the 2,3-anti as a sole diastereoisomer, such as cases in which a boron-containing Lewis acid was added prior to the tin hydride. One limitation was observed with this scenario and resolved using the exocyclic effect to access all 16 polypropionate stereopentad motifs. To further demonstrate the synthethic potential of our methodology, we engaged on the synthesis of the western hemisphere of both salinomycin and narasin. The synthetic challenges related with these molecules are numerous due to the large number of adjacent stereogenic centers. We realized that the 2,3-anti stereochemical relation of salinomycin was not selectively accessible via radical chemistry under the exocyclic effect. Different substrates were tested to understand this limitation and we concluded that the substituents on the ring impose a conformationnal bias unfavorable to good selectivty. Still, we found an alternative employing a chiral crotylsilane to access this 2,3-anti relationship α to the six-membered ring. This situation is different in the case of narasin where the β-methyl substituent blocks efficiently the hydride attack from the upper face. Impressive selectivities were observed and the synthesis of the C1-C9 fragment of narasin was accomplished in an expeditive manner. Finally, the elongation using a second sequence of stereoselective Mukaiyama aldol reaction/radical reduction followed by an aldol coupling led to the construction of the western hemisphere of narasin in 19 synthethic steps with an overall yield of 7 %. Finally, we decided to focus our attention to the chemistry of α-bromo-β- alkoxyketones in hydrogen transfer reactions. We found that their ability to give selective transformations could be beneficial in the context of synthesizing complex polypropionate motifs. The presence of a stereogenic center on the other side of the ketone seemed to have a great impact on the selectivity.

Firstly, it describes the three different types of State and their origin in Ancient costumary law. Furthermore, it elicits cumulative dimensions of fundamental rights that characterize each one of them. Moreover, it stresses the importance of Legal Hermeneutics to best interpret and bind that institute, especially in order to enforce legal certainty, private property and the social function of property. It emphasizes that neither classic methods of legal norm interpretation nor the latest hermeneutics models and schools will be enough to best comprehend legal phenomena if the legal system?s coherence and integrity are not complied with. It also draws attention to the evolution of bankruptcy law, especially in order to demonstrate the mitigation of its repressive character and the adoption of institutes that allow the debtor?s recovery. In addition, it makes a study of comparative law on the bankruptcy law of a number of countries by means of ascertain if they adopt the Cram Down. Its conclusion denotes the Cram Down as a duty of the judge, and not mere convenience, as long as its legal requirements are met.

台南市國小高年級學童英語補習經驗與英語學習態度之研究 / A Study of Cram School Learning Experience and English Learning Attitude of Tainan City Fifth and Sixth Graders

本研究旨在瞭解台南市國小高年級學童英語補習現況與英語補習經驗及其英語學習態度。以台南市公立國小高年級學童為研究對象,進行叢集抽樣,抽取15所學校,30個班級為樣本,以研究者自行編製的「台南市國小高年級學童英語學習態度問卷」為研究工具,採問卷調查法取得443份有效問卷,將所得資料以描述統計、t檢定、單因子變異數分析等統計方法進行分析。獲致本研究結果如下: 一、 台南市國小高年級有七成學童參加英語補習,補習年數以3-4年者最多; 每週補習英語的時數,以4小時以下者最多;學童參加英語補習最主要的動機,以升學與課業需求者最多。 二、 台南市國小高年級學童在一般英語學習態度、學校英語課程學習態度、英語補習課程學習態度為普通偏中上。 三、不同性別之學童在英語學習態度上部分有顯著差異,女學童優於男學童。 四、不同主要照顧者之家長教育程度之學童在英語學習態度的三層面均未有顯著差異。 五、不同英語補習年數之學童,僅在對學校英語課程的看法有顯著差異,補習年數1-2 年者優於3-4年及7年以上者。 六、每週英語補習時數不同之學童在一般英語學習態度有顯著差異;學校英語課程的學 習態度則未有顯著差異;英語補習課程學習態度部分有顯著差異,每週英語補習時 數5小時以上者優於於4小時以下者。 七、不同英語補習動機之學童在一般英語學習態度、英語補習課程的學習態度有 顯著差異,學校英語課程的學習態度部分有顯著差異,英語補習動機為自己 興趣者優於於其他英語補習動機。 / This study aims to understand English cram status quo. cram school learning experience and English learning attitude of the fifth and sixth graders in Tainan City. Totally 443 participants are selected from the fifth and sixth graders in Tainan City. The data are analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test and one way ANOVA. The major research findings are as follows: 1.Seventy percent of elementary high graders in Tainan City go to English cram schools, and most of them go there at least three to four years. Besides, most of them take English lessons everyweek under four hours. The main motivation is to enter a higher school and have better academic performance. 2. High graders students’ English learning attitude are above the average. 3. Different high graders genders have partly different attitude. Female students are better than male ones. 4. High graders with different primary caregivers of education have no significant difference on three levels. 5. High graders with different attending cram school years have significant difference partly. One to two English learning years are better than those with three to four years and more than seven years. 6. High graders with different English learning hours every week on general English learning attitude have significant differences.Students who learn English in cram school for more than five hours are better than students who learn English in cram school for less than four hours. 7. Significant difference of different motivations were found among general English learning attitude and English courses of going to cram schools. High graders with different motivation on the English courses have significant differences partly. A preparação de candidatos chineses para o Exame Celpe-Bras : aprendendo o que significa "uso da linguagem"

O presente trabalho visa a analisar a preparação de alunos chineses para o exame Celpe-Bras, com o intuito de investigar se há efeito retroativo do exame nesse processo. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa qualitativa da qual participaram três alunas chinesas e dois professores de um curso preparatório para o Celpe-Bras, no qual elas participaram. O estudo focaliza as atividades desenvolvidas no curso e as atividades extraclasse realizadas pelas alunas para preparar-se para o exame. Os dados para a pesquisa foram gerados pela observação de oito aulas do curso preparatório e pelo acompanhamento das alunas em atividades extraclasse. Além disso, foram feitas oito entrevistas com as alunas e duas com os professores, e os textos produzidos nas aulas foram analisados em relação ao feedback dos professores e à compreensão das alunas quanto às orientação recebidas. A análise dos resultados permite afirmar que as orientações do curso preparatório são coerentes com os pressupostos teóricos que subjazem ao exame e que focalizam principalmente o critério de correção adequação contextual, que operacionaliza a noção de proficiência do exame: uso da linguagem para agir no mundo. Essa orientação contribuiu especialmente para aprimorar a compreensão oral e a organização das produções escritas das alunas. A pesquisa também sugere que a percepção das alunas sobre a maneira de aprender uma língua modificou-se durante a preparação para o exame: sua compreensão da perspectiva de proficiência como uso da linguagem e sua busca por lidar com textos autênticos também na vida cotidiana, como preparação para o exame, sugerem um efeito retroativo positivo do Celpe-Bras na trajetória de aprendizagem de língua portuguesa dessas alunas. Os resultados desta pesquisa contribuem para o debate sobre o efeito retroativo de exames de desempenho, para a elaboração de cursos preparatórios para o exame Celpe-Bras e para a organização de currículos de ensino que tenham como objetivo o uso da linguagem. / The aim of this study is to analyze the preparation of Chinese students for the Celpe-Bras proficiency exam and discuss the washback effects of the exam on this process. A qualitative research was carried out with three Chinese students and two teachers of a cram course taken by these students. The study focuses on the activities developed by the prep course and the extra class activities carried out by the students to prepare for the exam. The data include the observation of eight classes of the cram course and of the students’ extra class activities, eight interviews with the students and two with the teachers, and the texts produced by the students, which were analyzed with respect to the teachers’ feedback and to the students’ understanding of the guidance they received during the prep course. The results suggest that the guidelines of the prep course are consistent with the construct of the exam and focus mainly on the correction criterion ‘adequacy to context’, which operationalizes the underlying concept of language proficiency of the exam: the adequate use of the language to perform actions in the world. The course guidelines contributed especially to improve the students’ listening and writing skills. In addition, the students’ perceptions of their language learning process changed during the preparation for the exam: their understanding of the language proficiency concept ‘use of language’ and their search for reading and listening to authentic texts, also in their daily lives, to prepare for the exam suggest a positive washback effect of the Celpe-Bras on these students’ Portuguese learning process. The results of this research contribute to the debate on the washback effects of performance tests, to the elaboration of cram courses for the Celpe-Bras exam, and to the organization of educational curricula that aim at developing the use of language.

本質化敘事研究旨在探討英語教師如何於正規及非正規專業發展領域中發展個人職能概念。研究對象為一位擁有多年補教與國高中教學經驗的英語教師。研究方法主要包含研究對象的口說敘述及半結構式訪談,目的在於完整記載研究對象之動態專業發展歷程。資料分析方式採用¬「整體─內容」分析法 (Lieblich, Tuveal-Mashiasch, & Zilber, 1998)與「關鍵事件」方法 (Webster & Mertova, 2007)。研究結果顯示,研究對象之教師發展出自於其主動作為並連結至其認為之與教學相關之要務。其中引領研究對象教師發展之關鍵為其個人與其所在之補教或學校場域的互動關係。也就是說,她如何看待及解讀場域中有關於教學與教師之價值,並以此價值為基礎發展個人職能概念。此外,研究對象之教師職能概念為一螺旋型過程,其過程強調一學習過程之結束引領另一新的學習發展;於專業發展領域之互動中動態發展。另一方面,藉由研究對象於正規與非正規學校場域中發展職能概念之經驗對照,本質化個案研究對於宏觀之正規及非正規教育系統在協助教師發展的設計,目前所面臨的兩難獲得更深入的了解。本研究期許針對教師教育、甚至於教育政策持續改善,提供可能之方向,使其更能符合教師於個人職能發展的實際需要。在本研究最後,針對於研究結果提出教學與研究上之建議做為參考。 / This study explores the development of an English teacher’s professional identity across formal and informal educational contexts. The informant invited in the study is an English teacher who has cross-contextual professional development experience. Data collection methods primarily included an oral narrative and semi-structured interviews in order to document the dynamic professional development trajectory of the teacher informant. The data collected were analyzed with a holistic-content method (Lieblich, Tuveal-Mashiasch, & Zilber, 1998) and a critical events approach (Webster & Mertova, 2007). The findings of the study indicate that teacher development is undertaken by the teacher herself and her concerns. What is really critical in guiding teacher development is the interaction between the teacher and her contexts; namely, how the teacher perceives and interprets the value of teaching and the meaning of being a teacher from the contexts, which is the basis to develop her professional identities. Furthermore, teacher professional identity is constructed dynamically as a spiral process in interaction with contexts. A better understanding of the tensions existing in the macro-level formal educational system is also obtained in the comparison with formal and informal professional development experience of the English teacher in the study. The study provides a possible direction for further improvement of teacher education program and for educational policy reforms to better take care of the actual professional development needs of teachers. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications as well as suggestions for future research are also provided at the end of the thesis.

Online Calibration Of Sensor Arrays Using Higher Order Statistics

Higher Order Statistics (HOS) and Second Order Statistics (SOS) approaches have certain advantages and disadvantages in signal processing applications. HOS approach provides more statistical information for non-Gaussian signals. On the other hand, SOS approach is more robust to the estimation errors than the HOS approach, especially when the number of observations is small. In this thesis, HOS and SOS approaches are jointly used in order to take advantage of both methods. In this respect, the joint use of HOS and SOS approaches are introduced for online calibration of sensor arrays with arbitrary geometries. Three different problems in online array calibration are considered and new algorithms for each of these problems are proposed. In the first problem, the positions of the randomly deployed sensors are completely unknown except the two reference sensors and HOS and SOS approaches are used iteratively for the joint Direction of Arrival (DOA) and sensor position estimation. Iterative HOS-SOS algorithm (IHOSS) solves the ambiguity problem in sensor position estimation by observing the source signals at least in two different frequencies and hence it is applicable for wideband signals. The conditions on these frequencies are presented. IHOSS is the first algorithm in the literature which finds the DOA and sensor position estimations in case of randomly deployed sensors with unknown coordinates. In the second problem, narrowband signals are considered and it is assumed that the nominal sensor positions are known. Modified IHOSS (MIHOSS) algorithm uses the nominal sensor positions to solve the ambiguity problem in sensor position estimation. This algorithm can handle both small and large errors in sensor positions. The upper bound of perturbations for unambiguous sensor position estimation is presented. In the last problem, an online array calibration method is proposed for sensor arrays where the sensors have unknown gain/phase mismatches and mutual coupling coefficients. In this case, sensor positions are assumed to be known. The mutual coupling matrix is unstructured. The two reference sensors are assumed to be perfectly calibrated. IHOSS algorithm is adapted for online calibration and parameter estimation, and hence CIHOSS algorithm is obtained. While CIHOSS originates from IHOSS, it is fundamentally different in many aspects. CIHOSS uses multiple virtual ESPRIT structures and employs an alignment technique to order the elements of rows of the actual array steering matrix. In this thesis, a new cumulant matrix estimation technique is proposed for the HOS approach by converting the multi-source problem into a single source one. The proposed algorithms perform well even in the case of correlated source signals due to the effectiveness of the proposed cumulant matrix estimate. The iterative procedure in all the proposed algorithms is guaranteed to converge. Closed form expressions are derived for the deterministic Cram&acute / er-Rao bound (CRB) for DOA and unknown calibration parameters for non-circular complex Gaussian noise with unknown covariance matrix. Simulation results show that the performances of the proposed methods approach to the CRB for both DOA and unknown calibration parameter estimations for high SNR.
