Construction and Conceptualization of Identities in Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s Speeches: Turkish Membership in the European Union (EU) as a Symbol of the Alliance of CivilizationsJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: While Huntington’s (1996) theory of “The Clash of Civilizations” illuminated the concept of the gap between the Western and non-Western cultures, the framework of an opposite approach, which intensively emphasizes and strives for mutual understanding, cooperation and solidarity towards peace, has created a new and vital discursive perspective and practice through the establishment of The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). As the domain of UNAOC has not received linguistic attention yet, the goal of the current dissertation is to investigate and reveal the notions and messages conveyed in the related context of Turkey’s accession to the EU by the Turkish Prime Minister (2003-2014) and the co- founder of the Alliance of Civilizations, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It seeks answers to the following questions: How does Mr. Erdogan conceptualize Turkey, which has geopolitically bridged the Western and non-Western cultures throughout the centuries, and which borders the boiling pot of the Middle East? How does the Prime Minister construct identities in the context of the Western and non-Western countries especially in his discussion of Turkey’s accession to the EU? How does the Prime Minister further reconceptualize the urgent need for global peace and stability in the world, contributing to the UNAOC directly and indirectly? This dissertation employs a cognitive framework approach which entails speech act theory and analogical reasoning, in addition to Reisigl and Wodak’s (2001) Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) to analyze Prime Minister Erdogan’s speeches in the international context. In conclusion, the discourse of UNAOC gives rise to new discursive practices for global peace, “countering the forces that fuel polarization and extremism” (http://www.unaoc.org/about/). The discursive construction of global phenomena, events and actions as defined in Erdogan’s speeches are reconceptualized on the basis of non-Western but secular pro-Western intertextuality and perspectivization. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2016

Missbrukarna - en språklig konstruktion? : - En kritisk diskursanalys av domar avseende tvångsvård med stöd av LVM / The drug addicts - a linguistic construction? : A critical discourse analysis of verdicts concerning drug related compulsory careJohansson, Angelica, Banko, Marina January 2018 (has links)
This study aimed to analyze statements made by professional practitioners and clients in verdicts related to compulsory drug treatment. The statements were examined in order to illustrate their contribution to the social construction of drug addicts. The study also aimed to address the power professionals have over individuals with drug problems. The data consisted of twelve verdicts obtained from administrative courts located in three different geographical areas in Sweden. Based on a qualitative approach we used a critical discourse analysis as a framework for the examination of vocabulary and sentence structures. The findings were further examined through a social constructivist approach and power theories. The results showed how all parties in the verdict can contribute to the social construction of drug addicts through substantial information that is given as well as the use of additional terms and discursive words. Themes and patterns identified within the statements showed how the clients’ life situation were described in terms of homelessness, unemployment, mental illness and crime. The results also showed that the clients were described as either responsible for or victimized by the drugs, a description that has a high impact on how the clients are subsequently perceived. It was also prominent that the professional statements, compared to the client’s, enjoyed higher degrees of credibility. The professional statements were also more often perceived as true due to the choice of words and structures of the sentences. Consequently, we could illustrate how professionals by the authority granted by their job title are given the power to depict and affect the social construction of drug addicts as a group.

Psykisk sjukdom gestaltad i film utifrån ett genusperspektiv : En kritisk diskursanalysRapp Johansson, Hanna, Norling, Camilla January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to distinguish which discourses can be identified in movies that portray mental illness. We also wanted to study whether there were differences in how men and women with mental illness were portrayed in the movies. In order to fulfill our intention we choose to use Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as a tool when analyzing the result. The movies that were chosen for the study are two common motion pictures that anyone can see, nor are they specifically intended to discuss the subject of mental illness from a certain perspective. We found that in these films there were perceptions of how it is to be mentally ill and that there were both differences and similarities between their portrayal of men and women with mental illness.

Nation Branding Communication : A Case Study of the Brand SingaporeČalić, Ena January 2018 (has links)
Globalization has significantly reshaped communication trends that influence nation branding practices. Many studies examine the development of a nation and destination branding; however, little has been done to examining the planning processes and the selection of representative messages that nations choose to communicate through their individual brands. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the key concepts that are used to build Brand Singapore. Singapore is a small, diverse country that attracts attention both as a tourism destination and political and economic entity. Hence, the study examines its branding materials and messages chosen in order to stand out from the competition, as well as the rationale behind these choices. For those purposes, the process of multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) was used on text and visual based messages present in the “Singapore – Where Passion is Made Possible” nation branding video of Singapore. In order to break down and identify the core messages that Brand Singapore communicates, results were subjected to contexts of safety and diversity in Singapore along with theories of re-orientalism and competitive identity. The examination revealed that Singapore is persistently showcasing itself as a multi-ethnical country, but it is rather understanding and tolerant. The presence of the social and economic hierarchy is present, and the Chinese ethnicity is granted the highest status in the messages. Communication practitioners and marketing organizations will find this study helpful in developing branding strategy planning for the most demanding countries.

Mobilizing Victimhood: Blaming and Claiming the Victim in Conservative Discourse in CanadaGordon, Kelly 22 June 2018 (has links)
When it comes to the politics of victimhood, existing academic accounts contend that conservative politics and ideology have largely been defined by a backlash against discourses of victimization. In this respect, North American conservatism is seen as embodying an anti-victimist approach – one where progressive claims of victimhood are represented as the result of an impaired character rather than as the result of systemic cultural and legal discrimination. However, while this literature accurately captures many characteristics of conservative ideology, it risks overlooking the ways that conservative proactively engage with the politics of victimhood and victim arguments.
This dissertation offers an examination of the discursive significance of the “victim” in contemporary conservative politics and ideology through an analysis of three realms of conservative politics in Canada: (1) the men’s rights movement, (2) the anti-abortion movement, and (3) the Conservative Party of Canada. Drawing on the results of a large-scale critical discourse analysis and the participant observation of over a dozen conservative events in Canada, this dissertation contends that the debate over the politics of victimhood is not a battle between anti-victim conservative and pro-victim progressives. Rather, contemporary Canadian conservatives are increasingly makers of victim politics – rather than its critics – challenging many academic assumptions made about both conservative ideology and discourse in Canada, as well as the larger politics of victimhood in North America.

This thesis is located within the research field of intercultural communication. More specifically, within the context of a broader project entitled Teletandem: Transculturality in online interactions in foreign languages through webcam. The Teletandem project promotes institutional partnerships between language learners from different universities, via communication tools such as Skype. During regular meetings, pairs of learners of Portuguese as a foreign language who are fluent in English and learners of English who are fluent in Portuguese engage into collaborative interactions by helping the partner practice the target foreign language. The aim of this study is to analyze the process of negotiation of meaning, permeated, predominantly, by linguistic, discursive and social issues, and the emergence of misunderstandings during the interactions between students of Portuguese and students of English as foreign languages. These one-to-one student partnerships were carried out in the first half of 2012 within the contexts of a Brazilian and an American university. In this thesis, the oral session in teletandem is observed from the perspective of the shared process of meaning construction during the interaction between learners. This process includes the mobilization of each interactant’s systems, world and textual knowledge. Such mobilization allows them to position themselves in the world and engage their peers in the interaction. In this process, misunderstanding is considered an intrinsic phenomenon to communication. It can be realized by linguistic and discoursive issues, by misleading information sharing or other occurrences that may cause failure in understanding, misunderstanding, uneaseness, or even laughing situations. This complex phenomenon may neither be understood nor negotiated by the interactants. To study it, I adopted the theoretical and methodological perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis, which allowed me to explore the characteristics of intercultural communication within the context teletandem. The analysis corpus consists of transcriptions of a total of 9 oral sessions in addition to written profiles of two focal pairs of participants who interacted in the mode of integrated institutional teletandem (in the case of the foreign university) and non-integrated institutional mode (in the case of the Brazilian university), from a collaborative partnership in the first half of 2012. In addition, I analyzed narratives about misunderstandings written by 13 Brazilian practitioners of teletandem who underwent interactions with different American universities in the first half of 2014. The analysis of data brings contributions to the context of teletandem mediation through the mapping of the aspects surrounding the interactions between the learners. Among the main results, I found that: (a) misunderstandings tend to be superficially negotiated, without deep consideration of the socio-discursive aspects that constitute them; and (b) they may also be related to the concept of culture, and to adjacent concepts (non-understanding, discursive failure, disagreement, failed communication, among others). In addition to these results, as I observed the impacts of misunderstandings within the collaborative learning relationship of teletandem, I found other results: (a) the negotiations of meanings of the interactants are permeated by face protection mechanisms; and (b) whenever they are shown, at least in the present study data, misunderstandings had a secondary role in the interaction and, because of the principle of collaboration, they did not compromise the partnerships. Collaboration, a characteristic inherent to the context teletandem, is related to the principles of reciprocity, autonomy and separate use of languages and is defined by the conception of the teletandem context itself, in which learners are involved in a mutual exchange and collaborative construction of learning.

Questões discursivas e sociais na alfabetização científica : um estudo crítico das erratas na revista Superinteressante / THE ISSUES discursive and social LITERACY IN SCIENCE: a critical study of errata in the magazine Superinteressante.Santos, Paulo Sérgio da Silva 18 June 2012 (has links)
The critical study of errata offers great social contribution to the practice of consuming texts of scientific dissemination. Clearly there are, nowadays, a growing demand for information of a scientific nature, since people are being asked to show their points of view about important issues all the time: nuclear power, genetically modified foods, hormone replacement etc.. The magazines of science communication are occupying the place of "scientific literacy", and reach millions of readers every month. However, not yet identified a reflective discussion about this practice when considered, specifically, the identification and analysis of social and
discursive errors published in these journalistic texts. Thus this thesis aims to reflect on the responsibility of the media to transmute the scientific discourse to the discourse of scientific
dissemination, discussing the consequences of 'ownership' discourse in the context of reporting on science. We are concerned mainly with the frequency and importance of the
misunderstandings between scientists and journalists and the discursive forms of interaction between readers and editors and their materialization in the errata. In the methodology, we
follow the qualitative-interpretative guidance. We collect the corpus from the errata issues aired in April and October between 1988 and 2011 from SUPERINTERESSANTE magazine.
Critical reflection was based on theoretical Critical Discourse Analysis. We seek to establish a dialogue between a version of ACD developed by Fairclough (1999, 2001, 2003), dialecticalrelational approach, and other disciplines such as Science Communication, Media and Systemic Functional Grammar through Appraisal System developed by Martin & White (2004). The results show that the popular science magazine in question has a frequency of errors that are not consistent with the role of "scientific literacy" claimed for it. It was proven, through errors of all levels that the interests of the journal detours the interests of readers who,
in turn, does not have the instruments necessary to prove what they consume. Thus, we believe that this research provides an important contribution to the debate about the disclosure and use of scientific information in Brazil.

Previous issue date: 2014-01-22 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / Brazilian constitution says that all Brazilians have basic survival rights such as education, sanitation and food, but these basic rights are luxury for some. So, thinking about this, this paper aims to develop a critical analysis about the (re)production of the discourse on poverty, and consequently on the poor, given by the federal government, through the official website of the program Brazil Without Poverty (Brasil Sem Pobreza), the media, represented by Veja magazine, and by those who affirm to be representatives of the poor; like the Single Central Slums (Central ?nica das Favelas CUFA). Our aim is to present a critical reflection on the discourses about the poverty in the voices of the government, Veja magazine (media representative) and CUFA (poor representative) and their contribution to the development of the meanings of the theme in Brazilian society. In order to do so, we have identified categories based upon Bajoit (2006a) to classify which the author calls faces of poverty . We have used the Sociological and Communicational Discourse Approach (ASCD) as developed by Pedrosa (2012a, 2012b, 2012c), within the Critical Discourse Analysis as theoretical apparatus, and also the studies in which the ASCD is built upon such as Sociology for Social Change (BAJOIT, 2006), the Cultural Studies (HALL, 2005), and the Functional Systemic Linguistic, especially the Evaluating System (MARTHIN & WHITE, 2005, VIAN JR et al, 2011). Thus, the discourse on poverty or on fighting poverty, extracted from news, chronicles and other genres of the mentioned vehicles, are taken as object of study to understand identities that are created and renewed on poverty and on the Brazilian poor, as their dependence on the government and civil society, their exploitation by the economy, and even the media that sometimes features them as delinquent / A nossa Constitui??o prega que todo brasileiro possui direitos b?sicos ? sua sobreviv?ncia, como educa??o, saneamento b?sico e comida, no entanto, este direito ? um luxo para alguns.

The main purpose of this study was to analyze how Swedish media portrays social work. The collected material underlying the analysis was published during the period 2007-01-01 to 2017-10-08 in Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter. The study focused on how social services and social workers were constructed in the articles, what discourses could be identified and what power structures were made visible inthe discourses. The chosen method was based on Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis and more specifically his three-dimensional model. Furthermore, the analysis was conducted on the basis of the social constructionist and discourse theoretic perspective that formed the basis for analysis and interpretation of the material. The study's findings of the material showed that the four dominated discourses of social services in the articles were: criticizing the social services, social services bureaucracy, the work environment at social offices and progressive areas of social services. These discourses showed high interdiscursivity, which refers to are production of the current discourse regime. Furthermore, the study showed that Swedish media depreciate social work to a lesser extent in comparison with other countries. However, results showed that Swedish media often tend to portray social work with ill-founded claims, as the previous research also showed. / <p>2018-06-04</p>

Den nya tidens storstadsman : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om hur hegemonisk maskulinitet omförhandlas i podcasten “Alex och Sigges podcast” / The modern cityman : A qualitative content analysis on how hegemonic masculinity is reconstructed or challenged in the podcast "Alex and Sigges podcast".Andersson, Sofie, Skylling, Malin January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the hegemonic masculinity that can be identified in the podcast “Alex och Sigges podcast”. In this study, a rhetorical analysis and a critical discourse analysis have been conducted. The study has also used the following theories: Raewyn Connells hegemonic masculinity, Pierre Bourdieus field and symbolic capital theory, homosociality, “power and media” and “humor and discours”. The material consists three chapters from the podcast, and these three chapters are: Stympad, Pysslingen and Där alla kan ditt namn. From these chapters, some conversation extracts have been selected, and then transcribed and analyzed. The content in the analysis is thematically divided, which is intended to visualize how the different parts reproduce or challenge hegemonic masculinity. These extracts, taken out from context, will be represented for the podcast in a broader perspective. In the end of the study there is a final discussion, which conclude results of the analysis combined with parts of the theoretical chapter. This study believes that the podcast “Alex och Sigges podcast” is creating a new type of ideal man through Schulman and Eklunds construction of hegemonic masculinity. By visualizing economic, social and cultural capital and using humor and laugh as a tool in their way to communicate, the podcast shows their listeners how hegemonic masculinity is maintained. Schulman and Eklund also challenge the prevailing masculinity norms, especially in their role as a father, where they show how a man can be sensitive, communicative and open about showing feelings to others. Hence, the title of the study, where they are successively creating “a modern cityman”.
