An investigation into the Saudi Arabian cultural knowledge among non-Muslim nurses working in the obstetric units

The study was conducted with the aim of assessing the Saudi Arabian cultural knowledge among the non-Muslim nurses. These nurses work in the obstetric units at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Jeddah and come from different cultural groups and are caring for the Saudi Arabian Muslim women. In order for care to be congruent, comprehensive and of a high quality, the patients' needs should be met at the best attainable level. Nurses in all health care settings are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the culture that they serve in order to eliminate barriers. Data analysis was facilitated with the use of the SPSS 11.5 computer program. The study findings may suggest the development of educational guidelines, which will direct the activities of an educational intervention. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies))

The purpose of the study was to determine professional nurses’ knowledge of culture- competent care at selected medical and oncology wards and outpatient departments in Mopani District, Limpopo Province. A quantitative descriptive design was used and data collected from one hundred and five professional nurses by means of a structured questionnaire. The study found that cultural knowledge needs to be nurtured through continuing education and mentoring and that culture-competent care should be included in the curriculum. Les conditions du développement des compétences interculturelles des adolescents immigrants à Sherbrooke / Conditions for the development of cross cultural competencies of immigrant youth in Sherbrooke

Le thème de la présente recherche est l'étude des conditions dans lesquelles se développent les compétences interculturelles des jeunes immigrants en milieu scolaire à Sherbrooke. La problématique met en évidence divers questionnements en lien non seulement avec l’évolution de la société québécoise, mais aussi avec les besoins propres aux systèmes éducatifs et aux contextes dans lesquels évoluent les personnes concernées. Au niveau national et particulièrement au plan institutionnel, ces contextes sont de plus en plus marqués par l’émergence d’expériences interculturelles complexes. Celles-ci constituent des phénomènes dynamiques et en transformation; elles provoquent des sentiments multiples, des comportements spécifiques, des troubles émotionnels, des chocs culturels, etc. Ces phénomènes s’accentuent proportionnellement à l’augmentation du nombre de nouveaux arrivants dans certaines régions. Ainsi, le nombre des jeunes immigrants à Sherbrooke s’accroît sans cesse. Les professionnels du milieu scolaire ne savent plus comment agir de façon adéquate dans une telle situation ; ils déplorent leur propre manque de connaissances et de ressources dans ce domaine, étant donné que l'augmentation de l'immigration vers les petites villes constitue un phénomène relativement nouveau au Canada. Ce phénomène demeure largement sous-représenté dans la documentation scientifique. Il est traité de manière parcellaire et peu adaptée aux réalités spécifiques des adolescents évoluant dans une telle région. Il s’agit donc d’un champ conceptuel à redéfinir; son cadre de référence est à rebâtir. Dès lors, il s’avère impératif de mener une analyse fine pour mieux comprendre le processus de développement des compétences interculturelles chez les immigrants, afin de mettre en place des outils efficaces pour une meilleure appropriation des connaissances et des actions pertinentes dans plusieurs sphères culturelles et institutionnelles. Pour cela, nous avons adopté un modèle de référence structurant permettant d’analyser les conditions du développement des compétences vues sous l’angle des facteurs favorables et défavorables, en allant du microsystème au macrosystème. Quatre types de répondants ont été interrogés : les jeunes québécois, les adolescents immigrants et leurs parents, ainsi que les enseignants œuvrant au sein des classes multiethniques, pour obtenir un regard global sur les témoignages des différents acteurs concernés par les expériences d'intégration. A l’issue des analyses, les résultats montrent que les conditions étudiées relèvent de plusieurs facteurs essentiels, qui sont classés selon l’écosystème. On y retrouve principalement les degrés de motivation et d’estime de soi, l’image perçue de l’école (microsystème), les stratégies parentales (mesosystème), la formation et les approches des enseignants (exosystème) ainsi que les lois touchant à l’accueil scolaire (macrosystème). De plus, il faut noter que les jeunes immigrants tendent à s’acculturer plus rapidement et au mieux dans la nouvelle société aussi bien que dans le nouveau collectif scolaire.Dans le présent travail, les concepts traités en rapport avec la notion des compétences interculturelles se trouvent enrichis par des apports multidisciplinaires (psychologie, sciences de l’éducation, sociologie, ainsi qu’anthropologie). / The subject matter of the present research is the analysis of conditions in which immigrant youth develop their cross cultural competences in school milieu in Sherbrooke.Several questions pertaining to changes taking place in Quebec society and the particular needs of Quebec’s educational system, in which the target population evolves, are outlined. Nationally, and particularly on the institutional level, the emergence of complex intercultural trajectories is increasingly taking center-stage. Such experiences represent dynamic evolving phenomena that provoke various feelings, specific behavior patterns, emotional disorders and cultural shocks. They are more clearly identifiable in certain regions where the number of newly arrived immigrants continuously grows. And the immigration in Sherbrooke is in constant evolution. Academic professionals are not sufficiently skilled to adequately perform in this kind of situations. They deplore their lack of knowledge and resources in this area, given that immigration to small towns on this scale is a relatively new phenomenon in Canada.Furthermore, this new phenomenon remains largely unexplored in the scientific domain. This subject is only partially paid attention to and is poorly adapted to the specific realities of immigrant youth being brought up in such regions.The conceptual field and frame of reference appear to have to be entirely reconstructed. To do so, it is necessary to analyze the conditions in which immigrant youth develop their cross-cultural competencies as it would allow us to understand the process of how they are acquired.Such subtle analysis will provide for carrying out tools and techniques to better equip academic professionals with knowledge and skills to help them face their new school realities and act in an appropriate and efficient manner.To address this need, we deployed an analysis pattern, which allowed us to study the evolution of cross-cultural competences by considering positive and negative factors for their development. These factors have been classified in an ecosystem, going from micro-system to macro-system.In the present study four types of respondents were interrogated: Quebecois youth, immigrant youth and their parents and teachers working in multicultural classes. These four respondents’ types were necessary to obtain a comprehensive view of the immigrant situation and their integration. We used focus groups, projective imagination test and face to face interviews.The results of the global analysis have shown that there are several crucial factors which were classified into the ecosystem. The main identified factors are: the degree of self-motivation, self esteem and how the school image is perceived (microsystem), parental strategies (mesosystem), teachers’ academic background and their tutorial approach, as well as policies around “welcome classes” structure (macrosystem). Moreover, we noticed that immigrant youth tend to faster adopt and integrate the culture of the Quebec society as well as merge with the new school community.The present research aimed to study the concepts of cross-cultural competencies has been enriched by the multidisciplinary approach we have applied throughout our analysis (psychology, pedagogy, sociology and anthropology).

Socialsekreterares och HVB-personalens erfarenheter av arbete med ensamkommande barn / Municipal social workers and HVB-staffś experience of the work with unaccompanied children

Syften med studien var att undersöka och få en fördjupad förståelse kring socialsekreterares kompetens i arbetet med ensamkommande barn, detta utifrån socialsekreterare och HVB- personalens perspektiv. Studien undersökte även vikten av kulturkompetens och hur samarbetet fungerade mellan aktörerna. I denna kvalitativa studie har nio intervjuer genomförts, med fyra HVB-personal och med fem socialsekreterare. En semistrukturerad intervju valdes eftersom en semistrukturerad intervju har fler öppna frågor och bredare tema, vilket ledde till att respondenterna hade möjlighet att påverka intervjuns innehåll. Vi strävade efter ett resultat och en analys där respondenternas egna ord och upplevelser stod i centrum. Studiens teoretiska utgångspunkter postkolonialism och intersektionalitet gav studien de perspektiv som möjliggjorde en analys av den insamlade empirin. Slutsatsen utifrån studiens syfte och frågeställningar tydde på att socialsekreterare behöver mer erfarenhet i arbetet med just ensamkommande då utbildningen inte sträcker sig över ämnet ensamkommande och migration. Kulturkompetens visade sig vara av stor vikt i arbetet med ensamkommande för att kunna förstå deras kultur och bakgrund samt vad individen bär med sig. Samarbetet mellan aktörerna fungerade bra men kunde förbättras, aktörerna var dock oense om vem som oftast tog initiativet till kontakt. Det som försvårade för aktörerna var att rollerna kunde uppfattas som otydliga och brist på resurser. / The purpose of the study was to investigate and gain an in-depth understanding of the municipal social workers competence in the work with unaccompanied children, this from the perspective of the municipal social workers and the HVB-staff. But also the importance of cultural competence and how the cooperation between the authorities worked. In this qualitative study, nine interviews were conducted, with four HVB-staff and five municipal social workers. A semi- structured interview was chosen to be conducted because it has more indefinite questions and a broader theme, which led to the respondents having the opportunity to influence the content of the interview. We strived for a result and an analysis where the respondents’ own words and experiences were in focus. The study’s theoretical starting points postcolonialism and intersectionality gave the study the perspectives that enabled an analysis of the collected empirical data. The conclusion based on the purpose of the study and issues indicated that municipal social workers need more experience in working with unaccompanied children as the education does not extend to the subject of unaccompanied children and migration. Cultural competence proved great importance in the work with unaccompanied minors in order to clearly understand their culture and background, what the individual carries with them. The cooperation between the authorities worked well but could be improved, however, the respondents disagreed on who most often took the initiative to contact. What made it difficult for the respondents was that the roles could be perceived as unclear and lack of resources.

Assessing Sense of Place and Geo-literacy Indicators as Learning Outcomes of an International Teacher Professional Development Program

This research explores the multifaceted benefits that accrue from learning within an international, experiential context. It uses a qualitative, case study approach employing pre and post surveys, in-situ observations, and semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews to analyze the Center for Geography Education in Oregon’s (C-GEO) 2013 Overseas Teacher Institute--a professional development program that took 11 teachers to Russia, Mongolia, and China for a total of 17 days (plus two additional travel days) to learn about the cultural and physical geography of each place. The focus of the research is two-fold and examines processes involved in gaining, synthesizing and applying 1) a sense of place (the emotional ties between people and place), and 2) geo-literacy. The results of this study provide evidence that intensive professional development programs can increase teachers personal and professional knowledge, change their instructional practices, and may lead to improved student learning outcomes.

A Phenomenology of Transgenderism as a Valued Life Experience Among Transgender Adults in the Midwestern United States

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study is a hermeneutic phenomenology of transgenderism as it is valued and appreciated by adults who self-identify along the transgender spectrum. As a population-at-risk due to a social environment reliant on a dualistic notion of gender, transgender people are of particular concern to social workers, who are charged with identifying and building on client strengths. Yet the preponderance of the academic literature has reinforced a negative, problematic, or even pathological view of transgenderism. The literature also has tended to focus narrowly on transsexualism, leaving a gap in our knowledge of other forms of transgenderism. The present study—grounded primarily in the philosophy and methodology of Heideggerian phenomenology, but also drawing on Gadamerian hermeneutics—sought to understand the lived experience of transgenderism as it is appreciated by a range of transgender adults. A purposive sample of fifteen self-identified transgender adults who reported appreciating being transgender was recruited using snowball sampling across three Midwestern states. Each participated in an individual, open-ended interview designed to tap their lived experience with transgenderism as a valued aspect of life. Transcribed interview data were analyzed using Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological processes as suggested by various researchers in nursing, social work, and other disciplines. The results of this study suggest that intimate connections (with one’s self, with others, and with a larger purpose) constitute the essence of the lived experience of appreciating one’s transgenderism. These findings help prepare social workers to recognize the strengths of the transgender population and to engage in culturally competent practice. In addition, this research offers new knowledge for improving social work curricular content on transgenderism and for justifying trans-inclusive social policies. The study also contributes to the overall research literature on transgenderism and qualitative methods.

The dissertation deals with modern approaches to the study of the student’s teams movement, proposes a model of competitive graduate, presents the results of studies to determine the level of formation of competences among representatives of the student’ self-management. The author shows that the level of competitiveness of fighters of the students’ teams movement is higher than that of other students’ organizations. He identified current problems of the students’ teams movement, proposed a new structure of UrFU Staff students’ teams, presented the results of an experiment on creation profiled students’ teams and made a map of formation of general cultural competence in activities of the students’ teams movement. / В диссертации рассмотрены современные подходы к изучению движения студенческих отрядов, предложена модель конкурентоспособного выпускника, представлены результаты исследований по определению уровня сформированности компетенций у представителей органов студенческого самоуправления. Автором показано, что уровень конкурентоспособности бойцов движения студенческих отрядов выше, чем у представителей других студенческих организаций. Выявлены актуальные проблемы движения студенческих отрядов, предложена новая структура Штаба студенческих отрядов УрФУ, представлены результаты эксперимента по созданию профильных студенческих отрядов, разработана карта формирования общекультурных компетенций в деятельности движения студенческих отрядов.

Exploring the cultural experiences of family case managers : an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study explored the lived experiences of family case managers who routinely work with families who are culturally different from themselves. The purpose was to understand and interpret the meaning of culture and cultural difference as it relates to the engagement process with families. The research also sought to understand whether cultural insensitivity or bias may contribute to the overrepresentation of children of color in the child welfare system. The author conducted 10 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with graduates of a large, research-intensive Midwestern university’s Title-IV-E Social Work Program, who also were employed as family case managers in public child welfare. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and the analytic process of the hermeneutic circle. Results suggest the concept of culture is a complex term that encompasses many characteristics and a number of dimensions. In addition, four themes were identified as underlying the engagement process with culturally different families. These themes routinely overlapped, and family case managers often had to attend to each of the thematic areas simultaneously. At nearly every step in the engagement process, family case managers modulated their interactions in order to find balance and stability in their relationship with the family. Finally, poverty was revealed to be the most salient cultural difference in working with families involved in the child welfare system. These results have important implications for social work education, child welfare practice, and research on the overrepresentation of children of color in the child welfare system.

RACIAL DISPARITIES IN SELF REPORTED HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION. DOES PRIMARY CARE MATTER?

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / A significant body of literature has accumulated in the last decade that provides evidence of the growing health care disparities among racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The literature suggests that Black adults share a disproportionate burden in death, disability, and disease. In 2002, the Institute of Medicine report, Unequal Treatment, showed that racial-ethnic disparities in health cannot be entirely attributed to problems of health care access, clinical performance, or patients’ personal characteristics. Many studies have shown that institutional and individual level discrimination that Blacks face in the health care system impacts their health status. This study used secondary data analysis to examine how primary care experience impacts self-reported health status and health care utilization among Black adults. Data were from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) implemented by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Specifically, MEPS Panel 10 (2005-2006) and Panel 11 (2006-2007) data were used in the analyses. The final sample comprised of N=15,295 respondents ages 18 and over. Logistic regression analyses were carried out using Stata Statistical Software, version 11. The study results reflect the disparities among Blacks and Whites on self-reported health and health care utilization. Blacks were 15% less likely to report good health status compared to Whites and had 0.11 less expected office-based doctor visits. Respondents who had better primary care experience had 0.05 times higher expected office-based doctor visits than respondents who did not have good primary care experience. Health care Social Workers should advocate for structural changes in health policy that will take into account the historical marginalization and contemporary inequities that continue to encompass the lives of many Black Americans.
