Harmoni - more than just a lamp

In this thesis, I wanted to design a lamp in collaboration with the lighting company Örsjö Belysning AB, that would contribute to stress-reduction and calmness both through visual and functional aspects. My focus in the study and the design process was on the lamps shape and light, where my primary inspiration was taken from the qualities of water. My lamp also had to fit into Örsjö Belysnings current assortment. My research showed that rounded shapes and adjustable light are two important factors for producing calmness and well-being for the user. The result of my work was a lamp with the name Harmoni. A LED floor lamp made of brass metal and acrylic plastic, with focus on rounded shapes, lightness, flexibility and symmetry. The lamp has a unique and adjustable light emission, that gives two different kinds of light from the same source. It functions both as a floor and a wall lamp in one.

The exponent of Hölder calmness for polynomial systems

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit Untersuchung der Hölder Calmness, eines Stabilitätskonzeptes das man als Verallgemeinerung des Begriffs der Calmness erhält. Ausgehend von Charakterisierungen dieser Eigenschaft für Niveaumengen von Funktionen, werden, unter der Voraussetzung der Hölder Calmness, Prozeduren zur Bestimmung von Elementen dieser Mengen analysiert. Ebenso werden hinreichende Bedingungen für Hölder Calmness studiert. Da Hölder Calmness (nichtleerer) Lösungsmengen endlicher Ungleichungssysteme mittels (lokaler) Fehlerabschätzungen beschrieben werden kann, werden auch Erweiterungen der lokalen zu globalen Ergebnissen diskutiert. Als Anwendung betrachten wir speziell den Fall von Niveaumengen von Polynomen bzw. allgemeine Lösungsmengen polynomialer Gleichungen und Ungleichungen. Eine konkrete Frage, die wir beantworten wollen, ist die nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen dem größten Grad der beteiligten Polynome sowie dem Typ, d.h. dem auftretenden Exponenten, der Hölder Calmness des entsprechenden Systems. / This thesis is concerned with an analysis of Hölder calmness, a stability property derived from the concept of calmness. On the basis of its characterization for (sub)level sets, we will cogitate about procedures to determine points in such sets under a Hölder calmness assumption. Also sufficient conditions for Hölder calmness of (sub)level sets and of inequality systems will be given and examined. Further, since Hölder calmness of (nonempty) solution sets of finite inequality systems may be described in terms of (local) error bounds, we will as well amplify the local propositions to global ones. As an application we investigate the case of (sub)level sets of polynomials and of general solution sets of polynomial equations and inequalities. A concrete question we want to answer here is, in which way the maximal degree of the involved polynomials is connected to the exponent of Hölder calmness or of the error bound for the system in question.

OASIS OF CALM : A STUDY ON CREATING AN URBAN OASIS OF CALM INSPIRED BY NATURE

We live in daily cycles of brightness and darkness throughout our lives. Light is a device, both through natural and artificial sources, that supports the working of our brains in the processing, reconstruction, and classification of information (Galetta, 2014). According to the models of mental processing provided by various individuals in literature, light as a stimulus can induce specific emotions and behaviors in people (Tomassoni et al., 2015). The objective of this thesis project is to study the possibility of using light patterns and motions to support stress reduction and provide people with a feeling of calm in an indoor setting, where access to nature is limited. The participants (n=30) of the study are students and working adults who live in different cities. They have been asked to evaluate the natural elements and what they perceive as calmness and relaxation through the projection of five different sets of skies. The study considers light as a Biophilic design element, which provides people with calm and a sense of well-being in their work environment (i.e., home office, working space). Through the results of this first survey and insight from the study, the author conducted a lighting experiment using a small model and surveyed the participants’ responses on mood and preference to the different lighting conditions in the model. Consequently, it turned out that most of the participants, from both the online survey and through direct physical interaction with the model, mentioned that they would prefer spending their breaks during their workday in a space that has both patterned light and moving light (not static), rather than the absence of light patterns and motion.  By shaping human experience, the study investigates the possibility of using artificial light as a Biophilic design element to provide people with a feeling of calm and, therefore, to support stress reduction in their work environment.

Absorbing Darkness

Beams of light can create volumes of darkness that help define an experience. That is an experience of darkness. Light and darkness in the enclosed space make me respond to myself. It is a canyon empty of everything, yet filled with the total absence of light. And the quality of this darkness is uniquely bewildering, what's more, a thick and viscous mass of black air that seems to brush against your face, limitless and seething. It is darkness visible. Darkness forces me to be isolated from the world. Without any external input, I start to talk to and hear from myself. As well as, I start to feel my body from top to toe with all senses except for the sense of sight. It goes slowly, and the interaction with myself, which is experiencing darkness, puts my mind in calm. In that level of calm, the experience of darkness wanes as we adjust to the environment, gradually becoming aware of people and walls and even faint shadows. This project is an attempt at designing spaces that allows a person to be absorbed in darkness. / Master of Architecture

Prospective First-Generation College Racial Minority Students: Mediating Factors that Facilitate Positive Educational Characteristics for College Admission

First-generation college (FGC) students represent a small portion of the population of students on college campuses across the nation. Racial minority students are also highly underrepresented at four-year institutions. When one combines FGC students who are also racial minorities, they comprise an even smaller subgroup of students attending four-year college campuses. Research conducted to evaluate how FGC students perform their first year in college is prevalent. Additionally, research has been completed on factors that help predict a high school student's admission into and performance in college. However, very little research exists about factors identified in high school that may help strengthen a prospective FGC, racial minority, and high school student's admission into college. This study will utilize the RELATE questionnaire to evaluate individual characteristics or circumstances identified in prospective first-generation college racial minority students that may be potentially mediated for by high school counselors or college administrators to help strengthen college or university admission. Counselors or advisors could have an impact on improving the likelihood of college or university admission for this population by facilitating the process of coming to terms with family stressors and/or strengthening their flexibility or adaptability to new or different environments, learning, and people. Since the RELATE database does not include direct data regarding college admission, positive student educational characteristics such as sociability, calmness, organization, maturity, and happiness will be utilized to represent potential stronger preparation for admission into college. RELATE is a questionnaire designed for individuals in a committed relationship and provides important information regarding the individual, the partner, and the relationship. Research with the RELATE questionnaire data is generally utilized in family and social science domains. This study is unique since it accesses the individual instead of couple data for positive educational characteristics and research. This comparative study between prospective first-generation college White students and prospective first-generation college racial minority students is designed to assist educators in secondary and higher educational levels to better prepare prospective FGC students, particularly prospective FGC racial minority students, for college admission. Also, this study will distinguish between various characteristics that may assist college recruiters identify prospective FGC students who may be a strong fit for their institutions.

Executional Greenwashing: The Unseen Attraction to Nature : A qualitative study on Consumers Perception of Advertisement within Fast-Moving Consumer Goods that is ‘Executionally Greenwashed’

With society's growing concern of the environmental impact that consumerism has today, consumers are more aware than ever of how their consumption habits affect their surroundings. This study is based on the consumer's journey of choosing products based on their environmental impact and the complications of it. The study will examine a subsection of Greenwashing, called Executional Greenwashing, that is used to subconsciously communicate messages about greenery towards the consumer, inferring their decision making. The goal of the research is to provide an understanding of how consumers react to Fast-Moving Consumer Goods advertisements containing Executional Greenwashing elements and what factors influence their reaction. The study uses primary and secondary data together with conducted interviews to examine how the use of Executional Greenwashing affects consumers' emotions towards advertisements containing these elements. The findings reveal how knowledge and expertise are the main factors to influence how consumers react to Executionally Greenwashed advertisement. The study also provides a conceptual model based on the findings to explain what emotions are affected in consumers. Consumers and researchers can use these findings to gain a further understanding of the effects of Executional Greenwashing and continue upon this research to achieve a complete understanding.

A family is the first educational institution where a child acquires his basic social standards. A family is also the most important institution for human socialization having a great influence on the development of a child‘s personality. Parents form the biggest part of a child‘s environment the development of a child‘s personality greatly depends on them. The aim of this work is to analyse the typical psychological relation between junior schoolchildren and their mothers on the bases of sex and family status. 400 people (200 children aged 9-11 and their 200 mothers) took part in a survey. 5 questionnaires were used for assessing children‘s psychological feelings, inside calmness, self - assessment, worries about school and motivation for learning. For assessing their mothers‘ psychological feelings, inside calmness and self – assessment 3 questionnaires were used. While carrying out a survey there were given 3 hypotheses which turned to be partly approved. A significant relation was defined between girls‘ inside calmness and their mothers‘ psychological feelings as well as between their self – assessment, whereas the same kind of relation between boys and their mothers was not confirmed. There was also defined a significant relation between boys‘ worries about school and their mothers‘ psychological feelings. Directional constraint qualifications and optimality conditions with application to bilevel programs

The main purpose of this dissertation is to investigate directional constraint qualifications and necessary optimality conditions for nonsmooth set-constrained mathematical programs. First, we study sufficient conditions for metric subregularity of the set-constrained system. We introduce the directional version of the quasi-/pseudo-normality as a sufficient condition for metric subregularity, which is weaker than the classical quasi-/pseudo-normality, respectively. Then we apply our results to complementarity and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems. Secondly, we study directional optimality conditions of bilevel programs. It is well-known that the value function reformulation of bilevel programs provides equivalent single-level optimization problems, which are nonsmooth and never satisfy the usual constraint qualifications such as the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ). We show that even the first-order sufficient condition for metric subregularity (which is generally weaker than MFCQ) fails at each feasible point of bilevel programs. We introduce the directional Clarke calmness condition and show that under the directional Clarke calmness condition, the directional necessary optimality condition holds. We perform directional sensitivity analysis of the value function and propose the directional quasi-normality as a sufficient condition for the directional Clarke calmness. / Graduate / 2021-07-07

David Bartoň Abstract: The proposed diploma thesis focuses on the presence of the Epicurean tradition in the biographical narration of selected contemporaries. The main emphasis is laid on substantiating relatedness between the thoughts that were formulated by the Greek thinker Epicurus at the turn of 3rd and 4th century BC and the values and lifestyle of the given individuals. The theoretical basis of the thesis is Epicurus's Letter to Menoeceus, which contains the explication of human life and ethics in particular. Based on the analysis of the letter, four general topics were defined (sobriety, moderation, internal and external lifestyle). These topics served as starting points for the interviews that also enabled their analysis and interpretation. The interviews were recorded using the oral history method, which facilitates individual approach to the scrutiny of biographical narration of selected contemporaries.
