In this context, the continuous improvement of products and productive processes, which determines incremental and constant changes, is necessary to maintain the competitive company. The need of the organizations to emphasize the customers satisfaction makes the ISO 9001 (International Organization for Standardization) quality system to overview its approach, considering in its requirements this subject with the continuous improvement as well as management for processes. In spite of the norm demands a systemic and structured practice, the continuous improvement activities needs initiatives development, on behalf of the organizations, which goes further than programs and techniques, considering also cultural and behavioral aspects which allows the supported continuous improvement of products and processes. In conclusion, it can be pointed out that the norm ISO 9001:2000 relates only what to do and not how to proceed in order to ensure that the company really accomplishes the continuous improvement of its processes. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to analyses the practice of the continuous improvement, identifying the aspects that promote it, related to the individual culture and behavior as well as the organization as a whole. This work describes the results of an exploratory qualitative research accomplished in supplier companies of capital goods and automotive sectors, certified by the norm ISO 9001, analyzing how they promote its continuous improvement programs, considering the cultural development. Afterwards, considerations are accomplished through the examined companies to evaluate the differences identified among the sector organizations presented, concerning the practice of the continuous improvement and the cultural development which support it.

Essai de modélisation du processus d’innovation des biens d’équipement : le cas d’un produit de haute technologie à long cycle de vie : application aux moteurs électriques dans un groupe industriel international / Modelling capital goods innovation process : the case of a high-tech, long life cycle product : practical application on the field of electric motors in an international industrial company

Velloso Rodrigues, Karina 23 March 2011 (has links)
Especially in the capital goods industries where the design and development process is very long, complex and involves many different departments working under severe constraints (limited financial and technological resources, time, standards and rules to follow, etc). Innovation in these industries is no longer casual, but it has became a pivotal activity of the company. Thus, new product development activity is organized into "innovation projects". From observations of the innovative projects driver within a large industrial group called Converteam, this thesis proposes a method for classifying and segmenting capital goods innovation projects. In order to develop this classification method, an observation methodology for data collection has been developed. The experimental procedure was performed in six innovation projects developed at Converteam. We started by analysing the evolution and dynamics of the electric motors technology. Then, we analyzed the literature in order to find the inputs and outputs needed to develop a classification of innovation projects. The study of these elements resulted in a classification method that takes into account the marketing and technological aspects and the company expectations to classify projects into three categories: differentiation, neutralization and optimization. This method was tested on six innovative projects that allowed us to identify good practices for each project category

However, current researches highlight those traditional methods for lifting these needs show deficiency, especially those latent needs. It has emerged, therefore, theories that seek to improve this situation as: product development focused on the client, principles of ethnography applied to product development process and user innovation. In the latter, the client is considered as having skills not only of knowledge about market needs, but also with technological domain by experience in product use and ability to generate ideas and new applications for new products. Based on these precedings the research proposal on the integration of customers in product development process appeared. This thesis aims at proposing a process for managing the customer‟s integration in the product development process in companies of capital goods. The subsidies for elaborating the proposal derived from a literature review and field research, which included case studies in five companies. The process for the customer integration is composed of three macrophases and six phases. Each phase involves activities, specific tasks and use of techniques and tools to support realization of activities. The macrophase of Customer Integration on Pre-Development involves the phases: Prospection of customer needs and/ or market opportunities, selection of clients for the Pre-Development and integration of customers on idea generation and/ or business opportunities. The macrophase of Customer Integration on Development involves the stages: Selection of clients for his integration in the product development and Customer Integration in the product development. The macrophase of Customer Integration on the Post-Development has as phase the evaluation of the customers integration in the product development. The results of the thesis contribute to both the theoretical knowledge on the subject and the practice of companies. From the theoretical point of view, the proposed process brings together content from various subject areas, analyzes and synthesizes, following the guiding principle of customers integration in product development process. From a practical standpoint, the proposed process assists in the organization and operationalization of customers integration activities, particularly in capital goods companies.

In this context, the Engineering to Order Capital Goods Industry, exposed to a very adverse market conditions such as high cyclical instability of demand for its products, which depends exclusively on the economy expansion moments, causing, therefore, longer cycles of fluctuation demand with long periods of stagnation followed by periods of high demand, have sought for modern production management strategies, already consolidated in more dynamic segments of the economy, such as lean production and the theory of constraints, to improve production flow and minimize the impact inherent in these production systems with high variety and low volume production, high levels of work-in-process, functional production layouts, high varied workloads, excess of materials handling, etc. This paper studies the Engineering to Order Capital Goods Industry, especially large capital goods, also known as Large Assemblies production systems, aiming to propose a method of joint implementation of lean principles and theory of constraints to simplify the material and information flow, propose the use of suitable SCO (ordering systems) and reduce production lead time in this environment.

Laabs, Peter 19 March 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Diallo, Ibrahima Amadou 22 November 2013 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how the real effective exchange rate (REER) and its associated asurements (REER volatility and REER misalignment) affect total factor productivity growth (TFPG). It also analyzes the channels through which the REER and its associated measurements act on total factor productivity (TFP). The first part studies how the REER itself, on the one hand, and the REER volatility, on the other hand, influence productivity. An analysis of the link between the level of REER and TFP in chapter 1 reveals that an exchange rate appreciation causes an increase of TFP. But this impact is also nonlinear: below the threshold, real exchange rate influences negatively productivity while above the threshold it acts positively. The results of chapter 2 illustrate that REER volatility affects negatively TFPG. We also found that REER volatility acts on TFP according to the level of financial development. For moderately financially developed countries, REER volatility reacts negatively on productivity and has no effect on productivity for very low and very high levels of financial development. The second part examines the channels through which the REER and its associated measurements influence productivity. The results of chapter 3 illustrate that the exchange rate volatility has a strong negative impact on investment. This outcome is robust in low income and middle income countries, and by using an alternative measurement of exchange rate volatility. Chapter 4 show that both real exchange rate misalignment and real exchange rate volatility affect negatively exports. It also demonstrates that real exchange rate volatility is more harmful to exports than misalignment. These outcomes are corroborated by estimations on subsamples of Low- ncome and Middle-Income countries
