Nature of science i skolans tidigare år - Intervjuer med lärare som integrerat Linnés 300-årsjubileum

För att alla elever ska kunna uppnå scientific literacy bör man utgå från barnens erfarenheter där naturorienterade ämnen, NO, knyts till ett sammanhang – en kontext. I kontexten synliggörs naturvetenskapens mänskliga sida, och därmed visa att NO är mer än fakta. Elever behöver lära om naturvetenskapen, vilket kallas nature of science, NOS. Vårt syfte är att ta reda på hur lärare aktualiserar nature of science genom ett Linné-tema. I vår kvalitativa studie har vi intervjuat åtta lärare som undervisar i grundskolans tidigare år om deras tankar kring undervisning om naturvetenskapen. De visar ingen didaktisk medvetenhet om NOS men tillämpar det i stor utsträckning i ett temaarbete kring Linné-året 2007. I en analys (efter Lederman 2004) visar vi att de konkretiserar de mänskliga aspekterna av naturvetenskapen så att eleverna får uppleva hur en forskare arbetar. / Enabling all pupils to acquire scientific literacy it is suggested to start from their experiences, where science content will make sense within the context. In this context it is of importance that the human aspect of Science is shown, making it is possible to show that science isn’t merely facts. Pupils are in need of learning about Science, called nature of science, NOS. Our task is to find out how teachers pursue nature of science in inquiry based education on Carl Linnaeus. In the qualitative study we interviewed eight teachers in early primary school on their thoughts on teaching about Science. They do not show any didactic awareness of NOS though they use it in large extent in working with Linnaeus. In analysis (from Lederman 2004), we can show that teachers engage in the humanistic aspect of science, in which pupils experiences the work of a scientist.

In the 1700’s, natural history played an essential part in constructing the western view of the east and its inhabitants. Based on this assumtion, the primary aim of this study has been to examine how two of Carl Linaeus’ apostles (Petrus Forsskål and Fredric Hasselquist) wrote about their specific cultural encounters while travelling.   In its essence, the results of the study has been that Mary Louise Pratts  previous writings are applicable also on the travel writings of Forsskål och Hasselquist. Altough with a few significant deviations. For example it seems that the apostles considered the native history more relevant than what Pratts theory would give them credit for.

Arkadien under uppbyggnad : Bilder av Sápmi och deras användning inom Sveriges koloniseringsprojekt under första halvan av 1700-talet

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the images of Sápmi and the Saami people that existed among natural historians during the eighteenth century through the lens of Carl Linnaeus' Lapland journey 1732. It examines how these images were tied to the societal discourses of the time and if and how these images were used during the Swedish colonisation of Sápmi. This was done by doing a close reading of Flora Lapponica, Iter Lapponicum and Diaeta naturalis, noting emerging themes and trying to identify the societal discourses shaping these themes. The thesis finds that Linnaeus' descriptions of Sápmi and the Saami often are heavily mythologising and that Linnaeus, inspired by gothicism and primitivism, liked to use the Saami as didactic examples. However, these idealised descriptions are contradicted by Linnaeus himself. In the same texts he describes the Saami as both the pinnacles of health and as drunken and sickly. Linnaeus was also influenced by mercantilist thought and suggested many plans on how to best use Sápmis natural resources and thereby increase the Swedish states profits. The Saami, viewed as primitive but now without primitivism’s positive connotations, were seen as incapable of correctly exploiting their resources themselves. If Linnaeus' plans had been implemented they would have destroyed the Saami lifestyle Linnaeus claimed to idealise. The thesis concludes that while Linnaeus painted an idealised picture of Sápmi and the Saami in his text he did so knowing that it was at least partially false. He used these theoretical Saami to criticise his own society and as didactic examples for his fellow Swedes, but in practice had no problems with the colonial exploitation of Sápmi.

The aim of this essay is to study the historical process of the academic gardens in Uppsala. Which works in different ways in relation to the university, Uppsala university. The history of the academic garden in Uppsala is varied, with the exemplified gardens individually expressing different garden contextual ideals. From the 17th century academy gardens and Sweden's first botanical garden created by Olof Rudbeck d.ä (1630-1702), through the world-renowned botanist Carl von Linné (1707-1778) to today's version of the academic garden at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. By studying general change processes of the university, a basis is provided for understanding its built environment and gardens in the long run. The essay also aims to shed light on important components of the academic garden and how they have changed over time. The essay shows that although the academic garden varies in terms of plant material, scale and purpose, it possesses similar elements throughout history. All gardens covered in the essay possess qualities important to the general Swedish garden history and indicate a number of foreign influences.

Denna uppsats undersöker diskursen kring Linnémonumentet i Humlegården, Stockholm och Louis De Geer-statyn på Gamla Torget, Norrköping, samt diskuterar vilken betydelse skulpturerna fick under Black Lives Matter-demonstrationerna år 2020 i relation till antirasism och historiska företeelser av 'damnatio memoriae'. Med ett postkolonialt och kritiskt rasteoretiskt perspektiv syftar denna uppsats till att framhäva och analysera de resonemang som tog mest plats under debatten, centrerat kring antirasistiska och icke-vitas röster. Genomgående används därav den kritiska diskursanalysen och semiotiken som metoder för att skapa en förståelse kring auktoritet, samt att belysa det svenska samhällets syn på sin koloniala historia och lyfta diskussionen kring bland annat ras, klass, kön och makt i förhållande till den offentliga konsten. Uppsatsen resonerar sålunda hur offentliga och publika platser i samhället kan avkolonialiseras med avsikt att skapa ett hem för oss alla. / This thesis examines the discourse regarding the Linnaeus Monument in Humlegården, Stockholm, and the Louis De Geer statue at The Old Square, Norrköping. It further analyzes the significance that sculptures gained during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020, in relation to anti-racism and historical phenomena of 'damnatio memoriae'. With a theoretical framework of postcolonialism and critical race theory, this thesis aims to highlight and analyze the reasonings that were central during the debate, focusing on anti-racist and people of color's voices. Thus, critical discourse analysis and semiotics are used as methods to create an understanding of authority and to shed light on Sweden's own view of its colonial history and elevate the discussion concerning race, class, gender, and power, etcetera, in relation to public art. The thesis, hence, argues how public places in society can be decolonized with the intention of creating a home for all of us.
