Toward an Understanding of the Built Environment Influences on the Carpool Formation and Use Process: A Case Study of Employer-based Users within the Service Sector of Smart Commute’s Carpool Zone

Bui, Randy 05 December 2011 (has links)
The recent availability of geo-enabled web-based tools creates new possibilities for facilitating carpool formation. Carpool Zone is a web-based carpool formation service offered by Metrolinx, the transportation planning authority for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), Canada. The carpooling literature has yet to uncover how different built environments may facilitate or act as barriers to carpool propensity. This research explores the relationship between the built environment and carpool formation. With respect to the built environment, industrial and business parks (homogeneous land-use mix) are associated with high odds of forming carpools. The results suggest that employer transport policies are also among the more salient factors influencing carpool formation and use. Importantly, the findings indicate that firms interested in promoting carpooling will require contingencies to reduce the uncertainty of ride provision that may hamper long-term carpool adoption by employees.

”Why don’t you have your own car?” : A master thesis investingating how Access-based consumption creates consumer-brand relationships for car brands.

Garcin, Alexander, Falkenäng, Olle January 2014 (has links)
Ownership-based consumption mode has been perceived as the normative ideal in how consumer-brand relationships are created. Today, Access-based consumption mode allows consumers to access brands among other consumers without needing to sole- or joint own them. Even though its popularity, there is a limited and quite unclear understanding of how Access-based consumption affects the consumer-brand relationship. The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent an Access-based consumption mode creates a consumer-brand relationship, compared to an Ownership- based consumption mode in the context of car brands. In order to fulfill our purpose, both a quantitative and qualitative research method was conducted on members of carpools representing Access-based consumption mode, and car owners representing Ownership-based consumption. A theoretical framework Brand Relationship Quality, composed of six dimensions was used to understand the consumer-brand relationship. Our research shows consistently that Access-based consumption creates a weaker relationship between consumers and car brands in all dimensions of BRQ-model compared to Ownership-based consumption. One group of dimensions identified to relate to emotional attachment; Intimacy, Brand-Self Connection and Love/Passion, have relatively higher difference between the two consumption modes. Another group of dimensions related to values of functionality and practicality; Commitment, Brand Partner Quality and Interdependence, have less difference.

The Traveling Salesman with Passengers and High Occupancy Problem is a version of the classic TSP where the salesman is the driver of a vehicle who shares travels? expenses with passengers. Besides shared expenses, the driver also benefits from discounts of the highoccupancy vehicle lanes, i.e. traffic lanes in which high occupancy vehicles are exempted from tolls. The addition of passengers to the TSP, a routing-only problem, creates a sharing view which is intensified by the consideration of special lanes. This scenario grants to the problem an ecological feature, since its study have direct consequences for the efficient use of urban space and the greenhouse gas emissions reduction, greatly contributing for quality of life improvement. This work addresses the study of this novel combinatorial optimization problem, going from the relationship it draws with other ones in the literature until the conception of a six hundred set of artificial test cases and the creation of many solution methods. To find optimal solutions, a mathematical model is proposed. This model supported the search for exact solutions by Mathematical and Constraint Programming. Additionally, is presented a branchand- bound algorithm specifically developed for the problem. Aiming the search for good quality solutions in short time period, five experimental algorithms based on the heuristics approaches Simulated Annealing, Variable Neighborhood Search, Bees Colony and Genetic Algorithms are introduced. Several auxiliary procedures for solutions generations and local search execution are revealed as well. A computational experiment is fulfilled to comparison between the solution methods. A sample of a hundred test cases is used for the heuristics algorithms? parameter tuning statistical process, while the rest of them are extensively addressed by the methods. The optimal solution for a hundred and fifty five test cases with sizes of 10 and 20 cities are determined. Among the experimental methods, one has to highlight the advantage of the heuristic algorithm that unites the metaheuristics Simulated Annealing and Variable Neighborhood Search.

KomUt : Utveckling av en samåkningsplattform för företagsanställda / KomUt : Development of a carpooling platform for employees

Bjurenfalk, Jonatan, Cedighi, Saam, Fröberg, Simon, Holmström, Oskar, Hubertsson, Oscar, Leth, Axel, Olsson, Linda, Ågren, Sara January 2018 (has links)
In our society there is an increased awareness of environmental impact and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An influencing factor is transport in passenger cars to and from work. In order to increase the utilization rate of passenger cars and thereby reduce environmental impact, a possible solution is to carpool. The purpose of the project was to create a web application to help those who want to carpool. To be effective and interesting to users such a web application needs to be useful and easy to navigate, as supported in previous surveys. The report’s issue is therefore how a carpooling web application, for companies and their employees, is designed and implemented to make it useful with regard to navigability. The attempt to answer the issue was initiated by finding relevant theory of navigabil- ity and usability. After that a market survey was conducted, to better understand the needs of the target group, and a prototype was developed based on the found theory. User stories were developed to define the application’s functionality and the development of the web application took place in parallel with iterative user tests, where feedback from the tests was implemented. At the end of the project, the final result and each user test were analyzed to compare users’ response to current theory and by answering the issue of the report. Based on the results of the tests, given the theoretical framework, it was shown that two out of four test subjects got lost in the web application. The test subjects were struggling to get through the buying process. They had insufficient understanding of what happens when placing a trip in the cart, that the trips are booked inside the shopping cart and that the payment of completed trips are found on the profile page. Reasons for the result may be due to both the weaknesses of the web application navigability or the characteristics of the test subjects. Despite this the web application was considered useful in accordance with the System Usability Test performed. In its entirety, the web application can be assessed as useful, though it can not be considered to meet the theoretical requirements for navigability. The conclusion is that a navigable web application can be developed by allowing users to effectively find the most important features of the web application. This can be imple- mented with a distinct navigation bar, visual indications for links, information boxes, a natural flow for the user through the page structure, and that the user can get through it with few steps. This should be specifically applied to the buying process, which is central to a consumer web application, to reduce perceived complexity and to be useful and navigable to the user. In order for the web application to be perceived as useful, it should contain the basic functionality requirements expected of a carpooling service. These are being able to register oneself, find a trip, create a trip, find information about pricing and to be able to remove a trip.

Utveckling i parkeringsplaneringen vid bostadsområden i städer kontra mindre orter / Development in planning of parking spaces in residential areas in cities versus smaller towns

Petersson, Jennifer January 2021 (has links)
Parking planning for new residential constructions is intensively discussed between develops, architects, and municipalities. In a big city, the land value is higher and it is more profitable to build apartments instead of parking places, but parking space can increase the value of the apartment. The purpose of this work was to analyse how the planning of a parking space in a big city compared to a smaller town differs today versus 10 years ago. Results of interviews were that the parameters such as municipal parking regulations and access to public transport govern the parking planning. All the municipalities, contractors and architects agreed that in the future more municipalities will work with flexible parking standards. The conclusion is that it is the municipality’s parking norm and access to public transport that affects parking planning. The largest change and development in the last 10 years is an increased investment into mobility solutions in form of charging stations and carpools.

Understanding Immigrants' Travel Behavior in Florida: Neighborhood Effects and Behavioral Assimilation

Zaman, Nishat 14 November 2014 (has links)
The goal of this study was to develop Multinomial Logit models for the mode choice behavior of immigrants, with key focuses on neighborhood effects and behavioral assimilation. The first aspect shows the relationship between social network ties and immigrants’ chosen mode of transportation, while the second aspect explores the gradual changes toward alternative mode usage with regard to immigrants’ migrating period in the United States (US). Mode choice models were developed for work, shopping, social, recreational, and other trip purposes to evaluate the impacts of various land use patterns, neighborhood typology, socioeconomic-demographic and immigrant related attributes on individuals’ travel behavior. Estimated coefficients of mode choice determinants were compared between each alternative mode (i.e., high-occupancy vehicle, public transit, and non-motorized transport) with single-occupant vehicles. The model results revealed the significant influence of neighborhood and land use variables on the usage of alternative modes among immigrants. Incorporating these indicators into the demand forecasting process will provide a better understanding of the diverse travel patterns for the unique composition of population groups in Florida.

Etablering av medborgardialog kring smart mobilitet : En explorativ studie om medborgardialogens inverkan på människans inställning till digitala innovationer / Establishing a citizen dialogue about smart mobility

Rask, Kajsa, Mattsson, Madeleine January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of our thesis was to examine citizens' attitude in a smaller city to new digital innovations, specifically autonomous vehicles and carpools, as well as opinions about citizens' participation. Through a web-based questionnaire, which was distributed on social media, as well as a discussion group on Facebook, an understanding was formed about the human acceptance, motivation factors, views and mobility habits. This was then analyzed to create an understanding of how a citizen dialogue should be conducted in social media. In line with this, we examined whether connections regarding human acceptance of new digital innovations can be affected, depending on how the dialogue is conducted and how much information the citizens are provided with. The result showed a clear relationship between knowledge and attitude, where a little knowledge created a more negative opinion. Other interesting discoveries that were identified, were that people see both problem areas and opportunities with a more digitized society. We also found how the respondents wanted increased participation, and that citizens' views are taken into account and have a clear impact on urban development. Finally, we conclude that the degree of citizens' participation and how the dialogue is conducted, shape their acceptance and understanding of changes in society and mobility solutions. The research area on human acceptance, participation and dialogue on autonomous vehicles and carpools is an emerging area of research. This means that the essay is exploratory which can enable further and more in-depth research.

Parkeringsyta och bullerskydd på begränsad yta / Parking space and noise mitigation with limited space

Melander, Filip, Osman, Ziad January 2023 (has links)
The placement of parking lots, for projects with limited available space, is a well-known problem in the modern building industry (Duvanova et al. 2016). Additionally, noise management is a problem for buildings that often requires alternative solutions, often in the form of noise canceling elements. This is even more prevalent when building residential areas with limited exploitation area, since noise sensitive areas such as courtyards are forced to be placed in close proximity to noise emitting areas, such as roads. An inquiry was conducted regarding a new residential area in Ljungby Municipality, Sweden year 2023. The study encountered multiple problems regarding parking lot allocation, as well as noise management on the building facade, which sparked the intent behind this study. This thesis work analyzed the effectiveness of various parking solutions, and building designs regarding the factors cost, aesthetics and environmental effects. The different types of parking solutions were hydraulic parking, plain parking, carpool, multistory carpark and parking garage. Plain parking was deduced as the most effective parking solution for the study while a U-shaped building, where a parking space was placed on the first floor, was considered to be most effective regarding managing street noise.  The utilization of carpools was considered to be a major factor in the effectiveness of this solution, since the utilization of carpools could lead to savings of up to 5 million Swedish crowns, in theory. Further investigations in the practical application of carpools in residential areas with limited space is therefore highly encouraged.
