Outlier Detection with Applications in Graph Data Mining

Ranga Suri, N N R January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Outlier detection is an important data mining task due to its applicability in many contemporary applications such as fraud detection and anomaly detection in networks, etc. It assumes significance due to the general perception that outliers represent evolving novel patterns in data that are critical to many discovery tasks. Extensive use of various data mining techniques in different application domains gave rise to the rapid proliferation of research work on outlier detection problem. This has lead to the development of numerous methods for detecting outliers in various problem settings. However, most of these methods deal primarily with numeric data. Therefore, the problem of outlier detection in categorical data has been considered in this work for developing some novel methods addressing various research issues. Firstly, a ranking based algorithm for detecting a likely set of outliers in a given categorical data has been developed employing two independent ranking schemes. Subsequently, the issue of data dimensionality has been addressed by proposing a novel unsupervised feature selection algorithm on categorical data. Similarly, the uncertainty associated with the outlier detection task has also been suitably dealt with by developing a novel rough sets based categorical clustering algorithm. Due to the networked nature of the data pertaining to many real life applications such as computer communication networks, social networks of friends, the citation networks of documents, hyper-linked networks of web pages, etc., outlier detection(also known as anomaly detection) in graph representation of network data turns out to be an important pattern discovery activity. Accordingly, a novel graph mining method has been envisaged in this thesis based on the concept of community detection in graphs. In addition to finding anomalous nodes and anomalous edges, this method is capable of detecting various higher level anomalies that are arbitrary sub-graphs of the input graph. Subsequently, these ideas have been further extended in this thesis to characterize the time varying behavior of outliers(anomalies) in dynamic network data by defining various categories of temporal outliers (anomalies). Characterizing the behavior of such outliers during the evolution of the network over time is critical for discovering different anomalous connectivity patterns with potential adverse effects such as intrusions into a computer network, etc. In order to deal with temporal outlier detection in single instance network/graph data, the link prediction task has been leveraged in this thesis to produce multiple instances of the input graph. Thus, various outlier detection principles have been successfully applied for mining various categories of temporal outliers(anomalies) in the graph representation of network data.

Modelos estatísticos para dados politômicos nominais em estudos longitudinais com uma aplicação à área agronômica / Statistical models for nominal polytomous data in longitudinal studies with an application to agronomy

Vinicius Menarin 14 January 2016 (has links)
Studies where the response is a categorical variable are quite common in many fields of Sciences. In many situations this response is composed by more than two unordered categories characterizing a nominal polytomous outcome and, in general, the aim of the study is to associate the probability of occurrence of each category to the effects of variables. Furthermore, there are special types of study where many measurements are taken over the time for the same sampling unit, called longitudinal studies. Such studies require special statistical models that consider some kind of structure that support the dependence that tends to arise from the repeated measurements for the same sampling unit. This work focuses on two extensions of the baseline-category logit model usually employed in cases when there is a nominal polytomous response with independent observations. The first one consists in a modification of the well-known generalized estimating equations for longitudinal data based on local odds ratios to describe the dependence between the levels of the response over the repeated measurements. This type of model is also known as a marginal model. The second approach adds random effects to the linear predictor of the baseline-category logit model, which also considers a dependence between the observations. This characterizes a baseline-category mixed model. There are substantial differences inherent to interpretations when marginal and mixed models are compared, what should be considered in the choice of the most appropriated approach for each situation. Both methodologies are applied to the data of an agronomic experiment installed under a complete randomized block design with a factorial arrangement for the treatments. It was carried out over six seasons, characterizing the longitudinal structure, and the response is the type of vegetation observed in field (tussocks, weeds or regions with bare ground). The results are satisfactory, even if the dependence found in data is not so strong, and likelihood-ratio and Wald tests point to several differences between treatments. Moreover, due to methodological differences between the two approaches, the marginal model based on generalized estimating equations seems to be more appropriate for this data.

Efeito da eletroestimulação nervosa transcutânea no alívio da dor em nulíparas, na fase ativa do trabalho de parto / Effect of transcutaneous nervous electrical Stimulation for pain relief in nulliparous women in active phase of labor

Licia Santos Santana 18 November 2011 (has links)
The transcutaneous electrical nervous stimulation (TENS) is a resource that consists of administering electrical impulses or stimuli of variable frequency, asymmetric or symmetric of two-phase chains to superficial electrodes applied on the painful region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of TENS for pain relief during the active phase of cervix dilation in labor and to assess the degree of maternal satisfaction related to the experience during the study. This is a randomized controlled trial with 46 pregnant women, divided into control group (CG) and intervention group (IG). All patients were primiparous with cervical dilation of 4 cm in spontaneous labor with regular contractions for this phase without the use of oxytocic drugs during labor, lowrisk pregnant women with intact membranes and a single fetus. The application of the TENS was made by the researcher in charge, setting two pairs of electrodes in the paravertebral regions, at the level of the nerve roots from T10 to L1 and another pair between S2 to S4. The parameters used in TENS were: frequency 100 Hz, pulse width 100 us, intensity according to the sensitivity of the patient and duration of application of 30 continuous minutes. Pain assessment was performed immediately before and after therapy with the numerical categorical scale (ECN), the visual analogue scale (VAS), the body chart for pain location and the reduced form of McGill Questionnaire. In the puerperium, in addition to these assessments, the level of patient satisfaction related to the intervention and the presence of a health professional during the active phase of labor has been searched. The results showed statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the intensity of pain following the implementation of the TENS, with only 34% of IG patients maintaining the score of pain as 7 or more, in contrast to 83% of CG patients. On the other hand, no statistical differences related to the location of the pain after the application of TENS. The mothers of the IG were more satisfied with the experience and the ongoing support received during the study period. The maternal and perinatal outcomes were similar in both groups. The results show that the application of TENS in the early active phase of labor relieves maternal pain. Moreover, the presence of ongoing support has a positive effect on patients undergoing this intervention

Hernani Dimantas 29 November 2010 (has links)
The Collaborative Zones observed in the MetaReciclagem (MetaRecycling Network) that arose out of the field of on-line communication, which was already enveloping Brazilian digital culture, in 2002, from a conversation on the internet among a group of people debating the development of blogs, reuse/recycling of computer parts, the interdependence of these tools and the constitution of collaborative projects. The purpose of this study is about the communication between the members of MetaRecycling Network (MetaReciclagem) and it\'s process as constituted in Collaborative Zones, result in actions of intervention in social situations in Brazil. This study proposes a research-action methodology, through intervention in the discussion lists of MetaRecycling, thus proposing a meta-reflection on the actions and results of the movement over the years. It involves quantitative (through the collection of data in the MetaRecycling virtual environment (http://rede.metareciclagem.org) and qualitative approaches, collecting on-line statements and conversations between members that sketch out their opinions and exchanging ideas regarding the issues of the presented research. It also involves data analysis by means of a technique entitled content analysis and, within this, working with categorical thematic technical analysis. The results have shown that Collaborative Zones are capable of leading to collective brokering and social interventions, as well as public policies involving digital inclusion through the characteristics of the network and consequent engagement with people. Such transformations can only happen because of the non-hierarchical and noninstitutionalized nature of the MetaRecycling movement, which promotes the dissemination and replication of methodology that privileges the production of subjectivity and the appropriation of social technology in different cultural contexts.

Predicting the absorption rate of chemicals through mammalian skin using machine learning algorithms

Ashrafi, Parivash January 2016 (has links)
Machine learning (ML) methods have been applied to the analysis of a range of biological systems. This thesis evaluates the application of these methods to the problem domain of skin permeability. ML methods offer great potential in both predictive ability and their ability to provide mechanistic insight to, in this case, the phenomena of skin permeation. Historically, refining mathematical models used to predict percutaneous drug absorption has been thought of as a key factor in this field. Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSARs) models are used extensively for this purpose. However, advanced ML methods successfully outperform the traditional linear QSAR models. In this thesis, the application of ML methods to percutaneous absorption are investigated and evaluated. The major approach used in this thesis is Gaussian process (GP) regression method. This research seeks to enhance the prediction performance by using local non-linear models obtained from applying clustering algorithms. In addition, to increase the model's quality, a kernel is generated based on both numerical chemical variables and categorical experimental descriptors. Monte Carlo algorithm is also employed to generate reliable models from variable data which is inevitable in biological experiments. The datasets used for this study are small and it may raise the over-fitting/under-fitting problem. In this research I attempt to find optimal values of skin permeability using GP optimisation algorithms within small datasets. Although these methods are applied here to the field of percutaneous absorption, it may be applied more broadly to any biological system.

Etude des effets des entraînements auditifs sur la perception catégorielle du délai d'établissement du voisement: implications chez l'adulte, l'enfant et dans les troubles d'acquisition du langage / Auditory training effects on categorical perception of voice onset time: data from adults, children and language learning impairment

Collet, Gregory 21 May 2012 (has links)

Blili-Hamelin, Borhane 08 1900 (has links)
Throughout Theodor Adorno’s moral thought runs a paradoxical demand : that morality should be fully rooted in both the liveliest impulses and the keenest reasonings. More than a quirk among Adorno’s many, this essay suggests that this problem plays a pivotal role in his ethics. The current research seeks to develop a strategy to conjointly articulate these two demands. To this end, I will try to expound the following hypothesis : the analysis of the problem of freedom and unfreedom set forth by the first of the ‘models’ in Negative Dialectics enables making sense of both the bond and the disparity between the impulsive and rational constituents of adornian ethics. This study will first focus on the problem of unfreedom and its embodiment in the concrete phenomena of anti-Semitism as well as the animal fear and rage that it builds upon. It will then go on to examine Adorno’s conception of freedom in its two facets : «full theoretical consciousness» and «spontaneous impulse». It will finally try to ascertain the more general relevance of this interpretation of the problem of freedom for making sense of Adorno’s ethics, by trying to make sense on that basis of his «new categorical imperative».

Des bonnes moeurs à l'autonomie personnelle : essai critique sur le rôle de la dignité humaine / From boni mores to personal autonomy : critical essay on to the role of human dignity

Fragu, Estelle 09 November 2015 (has links)
After the French revolution, in front of a holist society hitherto, the willingness of a new individual to affirm his singularity did emerge. Whilst the Christian morality referred to God, the XVIIIth century philosophers, especially Kant, wanted to substitute a morality where, according to the words of Protagoras, man would be the measure of anythings. The individual, however, still had to conform to what Kant names the categorical imperative, and to support for shared values. The morality became gradually felt as authoritative and illegitimate, the middle-class values. The 60’s let rise an individual morality, which took the name of ethics. These upheavals were not without major effects on law of persons and family law. Boni mores disappeared therefore from family law to give way to human dignity in law of persons: to the conception of a model law that of a principle law did succeed. The concept of dignity was only tardily devoted in the Civil code: that could explain the absence of consensus concerning its definition. One can consider it regrettable that such a fragility could involve the dilution of this principle, and even its transformation into a subjective right; it does not oppose whereas a low resistance to the advent of personal autonomy, awkwardly built by the European Court of the human rights on the article 8 and the individual consent. The individual gained the right to operate choices on his body, however dangerous they are, and perhaps even freedom to give up the benefit of rights stated in the Convention. It thus appears essential to redefine dignity, a rampart against the reification of human being, around the concepts of freedom and equality. Consequently, from a harmful logic of competition between dignity and autonomy, a true relation of complementarity and hierarchy between these two concepts will be able to reappear.

Codes, graphs and designs related to iterated line graphs of complete graphs

Kumwenda, Khumbo January 2011 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / In this thesis, we describe linear codes over prime fields obtained from incidence designs of iterated line graphs of complete graphs Li(Kn) where i = 1, 2. In the binary case, results are extended to codes from neighbourhood designs of the line graphs Li+1(Kn) using certain elementary relations. Codes from incidence designs of complete graphs, Kn, and neighbourhood designs of their line graphs, L1(Kn) (the so-called triangular graphs), have been considered elsewhere by others. We consider codes from incidence designs of L1(Kn) and L2(Kn), and neighbourhood designs of L2(Kn) and L3(Kn). In each case, basic parameters of the codes are determined. Further, we introduce a family of vertex-transitive graphs Γn that are embeddable into the strong product L1(Kn)⊠  K2, of triangular graphs and K2, a class which at first sight may seem unnatural but, on closer look, is a repository of graphs rich with combinatorial structures. For instance, unlike most regular graphs considered here and elsewhere that only come with incidence and neighbourhood designs, Γn also has what we have termed as 6-cycle designs. These are designs in which the point set contains vertices of the graph and every block contains vertices of a 6-cycle in the graph. Also, binary codes from incidence matrices of these graphs have other minimum words in addition to incidence vectors of the blocks. In addition, these graphs have induced subgraphs isomorphic to the family Hn of complete porcupines (see Definition 4.11). We describe codes from incidence matrices of Γn and Hn and determine their parameters. / South Africa

Exploring hybridity in the 21st century : the working lives of South Asian ethnic minorities from a British born generation in Bradford

Rifet, Saima January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the working lives of British Born South Asian Ethnic Minorities (BB SAEMs), critiquing the homogenous identities ascribed to them in previous research. Its methodology is life-story interviews analysed using Nvivo. This identified four hybrid categories emerging from two cultures. I fitted myself neatly into just one. However the reflexive analysis required in good qualitative research led me to realise that I fitted into not one, but all four categories, and into others not yet recognised. At this point, my thesis had to take a new turn. An auto-ethnographic, moment-by-moment study led to an ‘unhybrid categorisation of hybridities’ acknowledging ‘fuzziness and mélange, cut ‘n’ mix, and criss and crossover’ where identity is a complex-mix, always in flux. I conclude not only with this new theory of identity formation in the working lives of BB SAEMs, but also by arguing that by imposing the requirement to categorise, research methods lead to over-simplification and misunderstanding.
