Co o nás řekl Charlie? Analýza mediálního diskurzu po teroristickém útoku na Charlie Hebdo. / What has Charlie said about us? Media discourse analysis after the Charlie Hebbo terrorist attack.

Vacková, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the qualitative text analysis of media discourses related to the 7th January 2015 terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's staff. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the term terrorism is here understood as a social construct and mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The objects of analysis are journalistic texts published during the one-month period of 7th January - 7th February 2015. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen the daily newspaper Lidové noviny, the weekly magazine Týden, online newspaper IHNED.cz and TV programme Události, komentáře. The texts were analysed through the combination of grounded theory method and four steps of foucaultian discourses analysis described by Carla Willig. The aim of this paper is to discover and to interpret the most significant discursive constructions of Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack that appeared in the Czech media, to situate the same discursive object within wider or global discourses, to describe positions that discourses make available or attribute to the subjects and social actors, and to define the practices arising from these discourses. The media event of Charlie Hebdo attack has been closely related to the topics of freedom of speech, 9/11 terrorist...

Konstruktioner av "Kina" genom typografi : En analys av exotypsnitt och filmaffischen Charlie Chan i Kina (1935) / Constructions of ”China” through typography : An analysis on exotypes and the film poster Charlie Chan i Kina (1935)

Nagano Holm, Maya January 2018 (has links)
This essay examines a typeface used for Roman letters meant to connote ”China” as an exotic and foreign place, within Swedish visual culture history. I examine this typeface using Swedish film posters by Eric Rohman (1891-1949) from the Charlie Chan-series from the years 1934-1940, focusing on the poster Charlie Chan i Kina (1935). The purpose is to examine constructions of ”the Chinese” and ”China” in these posters, and how this specific typeface has been used in these depictions as well as been constructed in relation to these ideas. Through a semiotic model for image analysis and the appliance of postcolonial studies, critical race theory and visual culture studies, I arrive at several conclusions. By imitating Chinese calligraphic visual elements, the typeface in Charlie Chan i Kina has the ability to connote ”China” as an exotic, traditional and foreign place, for a white Swedish audience. The analysis discusses the semiotic functions of the typeface in relation to contexts of the film poster, Swedish visual culture history and discourses concerning race in Sweden.

Homegrown terorismus / Homegrown Terrorism

Chlupáčová, Kamila January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this work is explanation of the concept of homegrown terrorism based on an analysis of selected terrorist attacks; and creates a definition for this completely new phenomenon. For the processing of the topic I chose a comparative case study method, which is applied to the exploration of three terrorist attacks (terrorist attacks in London 2005, attacks in editorial office of Charlie Hebdo in 2015 and terrorist attacks in Paris 2015). Basic investigated dependent variable is homegrown terrorism and the independent variables are concepts "belonging" and "autonomy". Variables that are connected to the concept of "belonging" include the origin of the attackers and links to the Western countries, the concept of "autonomy" is linked to the independence of the attackers to terrorist groups abroad and self-training of the attackers and finally motives of the attackers include the role of religion, the social situation of the attackers and hatred of invaders towards the West. The variables above are applied to each terrorist attack separately in the form of table data. Each dependent and independent variable may be positive or negative. According to this research, I found that each particular attack was different in certain characteristics from the previous one and therefore it is difficult to...

Stardom, Spectacle, Show, and Salability: United Artists and the Founding of the Hollywood Blockbuster Model

Johnson, Jessica 15 April 2019 (has links)
United Artists was an independent film distribution company that Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, and Mary Pickford jointly formed in 1919 to maintain creative autonomy over their work. Without the benefit of block booking practices through studio-owned theater houses, each founding artist established specific economic and aesthetic practices within their respective oeuvres in order to maintain company solvency. The resulting films produced during the company’s formative years (1919-1931) saw increased emphasis and innovation in regard to stardom, spectacle, show, and salability, features which ultimately innovated the model for the contemporary Hollywood blockbuster. Attributing the formation of the blockbuster to United Artists not only complicates the notion of the Hollywood blockbuster as a post-World War II phenomenon, but also broadens our comprehension of blockbuster filmmaking by formulating a model in which one can refine blockbuster criteria. This reframes the blockbuster as the cornerstone of the Hollywood film industry for over a century and presents it as a more persistent phenomenon.

Exploring the Factory: Analyzing the Film Adaptations of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Davis, Richard B. 01 December 2009 (has links)
Film adaptations are becoming more popular and past critics and scholars have discussed films based on dramas and novels. However, few have explored the children’s literature genre. In discussing such a topic, it takes more than just debating whether the novel or book is better. A discussion on what elements have been maintained, removed, or added in such an adaptation has to be made along with its success or failure. With this in mind, Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its two film adaptations will be explored along with an analysis of film adaptation theory to show that the first version of the novel succeeds and the second one fails.

Projekt Gösta : design genom fördjupning i produktionstekniken böjning av massivt trä / Project Gösta : designing for the production technique of bent wood

Nilsson, Charlie Styrbjörn January 2012 (has links)
I am fascinated by production and how to master the techniques to create our surroundings. We implement science on materials and call it engineering. In my thesis I’ve worked with wood, which is alive and warm, and through the traditional bent wood technique shape it. I deepen my knowledge in the technique through field trips, experiments and theory. But this is also the design, I create for the user. Many of my hours are spent investigating, exploring and searching for form and function. At the same time the material wood is offering, politely but firmly, limitations that I’m tempted to stretch. The result of my thesis is both an in-depth approach to design and prototypes of stools and chairs. These components are bent in two dimensions, but because of its diamond-shaped cross section, a more complex three-dimensional surface of the bends appear. My aim has been to combine the aesthetics of industry and the aesthetics the organicly grown in nature. These pieces portray time and space through their lines and shapes in an important and legitimate means.
